The American military leadership in World War II was primarily composed of individuals who rose through meritocracy rather than aristocratic lineage.

I go back and I look at World War II. And almost all of our generals got there through meritocracy and grew up on little farms or in poor areas of cities. And there was almost nobody whose dad or granddad was an admiral who was there. In fact, it was almost discrimination against the aristocracy.
