Well, let me ask you, if that's true, if you believe that, and if you would never register your guns or support any move to register our weapons, do you belong to the NRA? And if you do, why? Because let me tell you something right now, folks. If you belong to the NRA, you have already registered your guns.

Bill Cooper argues that gun ownership is being linked to hunting by the NRA to facilitate future gun confiscation through animal protection laws.

The literature says, join the NRA and protect your right to hunt. You know, it's going to be easy to get rid of the guns, folks. If they can convince the legislatures to pass laws protecting animals, then gun ownership is connected with the killing of those animals.

The NRA was formed by Union veterans to promote rifle shooting on a scientific basis due to poor marksmanship.

The NRA's website says, quote, Dismayed by the lack of marksmanship shown by their troops, Union veterans Colonel William C. Church and General George Wingate formed the National Rifle Association in 1871. The primary goal of the association would be to, quote, promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis.
