Elisa Lam

Elisa Lam and Marty DeRosa resurrect the Freezing Point podcast to dissect Alyssa Lamb's 2013 death at the Hotel Cecil, where police ruled an accident despite theories linking her bipolar medication history to foul play or a tuberculosis outbreak named after her. They analyze the infamous elevator video, dismissing Korean internet rituals as folklore while noting thematic parallels to the film Dark Water and the Black Dahlia case. Ultimately, the hosts express skepticism toward holographic reality glitches and invisibility tech conspiracies, concluding that while the tragedy remains unsolved, most sensational theories lack verifiable evidence beyond the hotel's dark history near Skid Row. Welcome to Freezing Point 00:05:38
unidentified
All I do is smash heads, bro.
dan friesen
Hey everybody.
Hello.
Welcome back to Freezing Point.
Happy Wednesday to y'alls.
Hump Day is, uh, in full effect.
Yeah, Hump Day.
It's for humping.
It's for getting over the hump.
Uh, boy.
I'm not proud of myself that I said Hump Day to begin with, and then I kept going with it.
I'm ashamed of my instincts.
marty derosa
At least you didn't say it's a whip-em-out Wednesday.
dan friesen
That would be just direct theft.
Uh, ladies and gentlemen, my guest today, very excited to have him back in the studio.
Very excited for the reason that he's here.
Ladies and gentlemen, Marty DeRosa.
marty derosa
Uh, we're not taking a trip up north.
dan friesen
No, we are not.
marty derosa
We're not reporting on spice.
dan friesen
We're heading west, baby.
marty derosa
We're heading west.
dan friesen
Although the subject matter we're talking about is from the land of Degrassi.
unidentified
It is.
marty derosa
Oh, this, this has international implications.
As they say in wrestling a lot of times.
dan friesen
It's an international incident.
marty derosa
This is an international incident.
This, uh, conspiracy theory crosses borders.
unidentified
Mm-hmm.
dan friesen
So ladies and gentlemen, you just tipped your hat there, Marty.
unidentified
I did.
dan friesen
It's, we're back.
marty derosa
My, my, as I'm in a trench coat.
unidentified
A fedora.
marty derosa
And a fedora.
Tipped real low.
dan friesen
Just hanging out in the shadows.
Uh, due to public demand.
marty derosa
Nick Rowley.
dan friesen
Just Nick.
unidentified
Just Nick.
dan friesen
I got some other tweets from people too.
Yeah, it wasn't just Nick.
Although Nick Rowley, uh, of the Jam Sandwich podcast is a big enthusiast of, of our now, was deceased?
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
Now resurrected podcast.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
That's what they want you to think.
unidentified
Hit it.
dan friesen
We're back.
unidentified
Hit it.
dan friesen
Oh boy.
marty derosa
I've been working on this for days.
That's what they want you to think.
They want you to think this stuff It just happened because it happened, but you know and I know that there's a mysterious Illuminati out there and dark world forces causing people to die.
I don't want to say how because that will give up this episode, but it's one of the creepiest and it'll make you think twice to stay in a hotel that a serial killer once lived in.
unidentified
That's what they want you to think.
dan friesen
That's what they want me to think theme song.
That's what they want you to think theme.
I gotta be honest.
Your, uh, Wayne Brady skills were a little better before we started recording.
marty derosa
You know what I really got most excited about is- You might.
dan friesen
For everyone listening, Marty freestyled about three minutes.
marty derosa
They want you to think.
unidentified
Yeaah.
marty derosa
That's what- They want you to think.
That's kind of my rage against the machine.
That's what- They want you to think.
dan friesen
When you started playing- That's Power Man 5000-ish.
unidentified
That is.
dan friesen
Worlds Collide.
marty derosa
My old, uh, backyard wrestling theme song.
dan friesen
Worlds Collide?
marty derosa
Yeaah, yeaah, yeaah, yeaah.
dan friesen
Hell yeaah, man.
unidentified
Uh.
marty derosa
Oh, you're ready to- One of my many.
unidentified
I would change it.
marty derosa
I would change it almost every week.
And my friends would always give me shit about that.
dan friesen
You kind of need to, they gotta keep it fresh.
unidentified
Yeaah.
marty derosa
Uh, but- When you started playing the Freezing Point theme song, which you are kindly enough to let Sami Zayn borrow.
unidentified
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
dan friesen
You stole it from us.
marty derosa
When that, when, like, he was on the shelf, no one was using that song for months, uh, and you made it your own.
dan friesen
I feel super guilty about it now, which we've discussed a little bit.
marty derosa
You know what, you know what, I was thinking last night when, or two nights ago when I was watching Monday Night Raw, uh, on his gear, uh, his, his long tights, I thought, you know what, you can throw a Freezing Point logo on there.
dan friesen
Oh, like a race car?
marty derosa
Because he's got the stripes.
I mean, they're the Sky-inspired checkers, but it's, it does kind of remind me of a checkered flag.
dan friesen
First of all, we need a better logo then, because it can't just be my face, or like that body picture of me.
marty derosa
Right, right, right, right.
You gotta get, I, I, you know what, that's something I'd like to see you get in the next few months, a nice logo.
dan friesen
You know what I would like to see?
unidentified
What?
dan friesen
Uh, instead of that, Sami Zayn, right across his ass, it just says, uh, TWTWYTT.
That's what they want you to think.
marty derosa
That's what they want you to think.
dan friesen
Everybody's confused and then they Google it and can't find it.
marty derosa
I'm like, what am I, what does that mean?
Like, that may be a hashtag, and then, and then there'll be some, uh.
dan friesen
Because this podcast is largely un-Googleable.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
Uh, but Marty, we, uh, decided we were gonna resurrect this somewhat.
marty derosa
We did.
dan friesen
And, uh, I asked you, what is a topic in the conspiracy realm that is hot on your mind?
marty derosa
Well, it's not just hot on my mind.
I feel like this is the hot new theory.
dan friesen
You think so?
unidentified
I think so.
marty derosa
I think, I think as far as the, the new ones, I mean, your new class, you've got, you've got your, uh.
dan friesen
Your veterans are like JFK.
marty derosa
Of course.
You've got your JFK, you've got all your, all your Nazi stuff, which we, which we cracked open.
We dissected like a frog in junior high and we solved it.
They're, they're.
dan friesen
For those keeping score, CIA did the JFK assassination and there are Nazis on the moon.
unidentified
Yeah.
Duh.
marty derosa
What are we talking about here?
Just sometimes I look up at the moon and I can see them.
I'm like, you guys are not even hiding.
dan friesen
Yeah.
marty derosa
Um, And I like to think they're wearing white uniforms on the moon.
But anyway, uhm, your new ones are your, your school shootings.
dan friesen
Uh, crisis actors.
marty derosa
Crisis actors.
dan friesen
Which is baloney.
marty derosa
Which, really?
unidentified
Yeaah.
marty derosa
Come on, I've seen them on Facebook.
They have Facebook pages.
unidentified
Ugh.
marty derosa
Anyway, crisis actors, uhm, blah blah blah.
dan friesen
I wanna make it clear that we're never gonna talk about that.
Cause I hate that stuff.
Like I, I, I legitimately think that crisis actors stuff is offensive.
marty derosa
Okay, answer me one and then we're moving on.
unidentified
Okay.
marty derosa
The guy who's like warming up before they go on CNN and he's like laughing and stuff.
dan friesen
But, but, I, I don't, I don't pretend to know how anybody would respond to any situation.
You and I are used to performing.
unidentified
That's true.
dan friesen
So we probably wouldn't, like, we would act naturally until a camera came on us.
unidentified
Okay, okay.
dan friesen
Whereas some people might be freaking out just about the idea of like, hey, TV news is here.
marty derosa
Yeah, right.
dan friesen
There's plausible deniability all over the place.
marty derosa
Yeah, that's probably what they want you to think.
Anyway.
Take a shot when we say that.
unidentified
No.
The Art of Performance 00:07:40
marty derosa
Um, but, but, uh, let's see, what are some other kind of current the newer ones?
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
Um, chemtrails are kind of newer.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
Well, maybe not newer, but they've gained steam more popularity there.
marty derosa
Yeaah, uhm, and, uh.
dan friesen
Lizards are always hot.
marty derosa
Yeaah, lizard people in the government.
Uhm, I really think this is Illuminati's time to shine.
unidentified
Sure.
marty derosa
You know, I really feel like they're the, they're the in vogue conspiracy theory.
dan friesen
The economy and our politics system are seeming to collapse at the same time.
marty derosa
It's a political year, absolutely.
And, uh, and then we've got our little, uh, elevator darling.
dan friesen
Uh, what we're talking about today is the suspicious and mysterious death of Alyssa Lamb.
marty derosa
And also, uh, the hotel itself.
dan friesen
The Hotel Cecil.
marty derosa
Which is sort of, uh, a character in the most recent American Horror Story.
dan friesen
Yeah, that, uh, that was heavily inspired by the events that we're going to be talking about today.
unidentified
Because this hotel.
dan friesen
It's like an entire season, right?
marty derosa
Yeah, this hotel has a long history before, before our young friend from up north took a road trip down south.
dan friesen
A little information about the hotel itself.
marty derosa
Please go.
dan friesen
It's found, uh, very close to Skid Row.
Uh, the notorious homeless and drug addict community in Los Angeles.
marty derosa
And I don't know, and I, I don't know, you say that and people are like, oh, okay, Skid Row.
Skid Row is like nothing else you've ever seen.
If you've never seen Skid Row.
dan friesen
I've only seen pictures myself.
marty derosa
It is crazy frightening.
It's, it's not, it's, you, you see it and you're like, how is this possible in a major metropolitan city?
dan friesen
It's sort of like Hamsterdam from The Wire.
marty derosa
Yeah, it's crazy.
There's these ten, it's, it's, it is crazy, uh, and it's, it's wild that it exists, let alone exists in, in one of our It almost feels like the, um, I don't know.
dan friesen
I don't remember if this is the point of that book, The Whipping Boy, but it's like, you can have a good society, but you have to, there's one kid gets the shit kicked out of him all the time, and that's what allows that society to, it's like a thought experiment kind of thing.
I feel like that Skid Row is like, well, that's what allows LA to, you know, be posh and, you know.
marty derosa
And, and, uh, one of the greatest lines ever, uh, from the band Skid Row in the, uh, the amazing song Youth Gone Wild, there's an amazing line where it says, Park Avenue leads to Skid Row.
And then Youth gone, wow, god damn, that's such a great song.
dan friesen
Did he ever do a song about how he's gonna look like a complete weirdo in 20 years?
Sebastian Buck?
marty derosa
Yeah, you know what?
I tried to watch one of those, uh, uh, trailer boys, trailer park boys movies, Swearnet.
Oh my god, it was so terrible.
dan friesen
I'm sure it is.
marty derosa
Holy shit.
But he was in it.
And, uh, yeah, he looks like a crazy old lady.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
That's the end result of hair metal.
marty derosa
But anyway, more about the hotel.
dan friesen
Um, it has, it has 600 rooms in it.
14 floors, uh, of occupied, uh, area.
Actually, it's debatable.
I can't, I was getting information that it's 14 and 15.
I'm not entirely sure.
The sense that I got is maybe the 15th floor doesn't have like residential stuff on it or something like that.
Uh, it is, uh, both a hotel and a long-term residence place.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
So it's not the same as like an apartment building, but a lot of people live there for months at a time.
Uh, so it's super weird in the sense that you could be there for a night if you're passing through and then there's someone who essentially lives there.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
On a month-to-month lease.
So driftery stuff.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
It's real driftery.
marty derosa
You're gonna, you're gonna assume some of these people live in there.
Aren't, uh, aren't in the best positions in life.
dan friesen
And, uh, that is historically backed up as, uh, both the Night Stalker, Richard Ramirez.
marty derosa
One of my faves.
dan friesen
And, uh, Jack Unterweger.
I don't know if I'm pronouncing his last name correctly.
Both of them were serial killers.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
Who, while they were active, lived at the Hotel Cecil.
marty derosa
And, uh, what, uh, uh, you have to forgive me.
What is the Black Dahlia tie-in?
dan friesen
That tie-in is that, uh, Elizabeth Short was the name of the actress.
She was last seen alive at the Hotel Cecil before she was murdered.
The Black Dahlia murder is one of those really grisly murders from history that's never been solved.
marty derosa
Oh, man.
dan friesen
And, uh, she was also known to hang out at the hotel a bit.
marty derosa
Yeah, they had a bar and everything there.
Uh, and, and that's another, uh, uh, man oh man.
If you're ever in the Los Angeles area.
dan friesen
Go stop in for, uh, fucking R.B. Walter.
marty derosa
No, no, no, no.
But I, but that would, I mean, that would be interesting too.
But more so than that, the Museum of Death.
unidentified
Oh.
marty derosa
Is like a, I don't even know.
I don't want to say hidden treasure or whatever.
People know about it.
But it's in Los Angeles.
If any of this stuff kind of, uh, tickles your fancy a little bit, there are some crime scene photos from the Black Dahlia murder.
Holy shit.
dan friesen
I don't know if I want to see those.
marty derosa
You can't not see it once you see it.
It's in my brain.
unidentified
Uhm.
dan friesen
I have like, I have some of that about thoughts that I've had about this topic that we're discussing, about this whole situation.
There's some little ideas that creep into your head and then they're very tough to shake.
So that's a warning for later.
unidentified
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
marty derosa
Also, this is one of the, this is one of these conspiracy theories that I'll, I'll Get in a YouTube wormhole about, where when I'm, I'm, I got the laptop on my tummy and I'm in bed.
dan friesen
Maybe a little high.
marty derosa
Maybe a little high.
Maybe waiting for this on my door.
unidentified
Oh yeaah.
marty derosa
I often think that's gonna happen, but, uh, this one spooks me out.
dan friesen
It's, it's, it's real spooky for, for a number of reasons.
Uh, just to give a little bit, just to finish the characterization of the hotel, cause I think it's important.
Uh, there's at least one murder that happened on the premises of the hotel, and three documented suicides of people defenestrating themselves, just throwing themselves out the window.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
And there have probably been more suicides that have been chalked up as, uh, like drug overdoses or things like that, accidental deaths.
So there's a rich history of death and fucked up stuff happening there.
unidentified
Mm-hmm.
dan friesen
So there you, that's, that's sort of the world we're living in.
marty derosa
That's the picture that Dan has painted.
dan friesen
Now into this world comes 21 year old Canadian lady, Alyssa Lamb.
marty derosa
Canadian Asian.
dan friesen
Uh, Canadian?
marty derosa
Canadian.
dan friesen
Canadian.
Uh, she is a student.
And she is sort of traveling and trying to get in a West Coast trip.
Trying to see the, the west coast of America, planning to go to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, uh, Santa Clara, I don't know.
unidentified
Maybe.
marty derosa
Sure, of course.
dan friesen
San Rafael, where my grandma used to live.
marty derosa
San Jose to see Dave Meltzer, the wrestling observer.
dan friesen
Sure, and taking a Sharks game, perhaps.
unidentified
You bet.
dan friesen
So she's taking this trip, and, spoiler alert, she doesn't make it past Los Angeles.
marty derosa
She does not.
dan friesen
Uh, on, she had been, like, talking with her parents, Her mom, very consistently.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
And sending postcards to her friends and very good contact with everybody.
And, uh, that immediately stops on January 31st, 2013.
marty derosa
No signs of, I gotta get out of here to clean my head or anything like that.
This was a responsible young woman.
dan friesen
No indications of any of that stuff.
Uh, also, uh, that was the day that she was supposed to check out of the hotel.
That was when her stay was going to be over.
Uh, she goes missing at that point.
marty derosa
Much like the Hotel California.
dan friesen
You check in.
unidentified
You can't check in.
dan friesen
Can't check out.
marty derosa
Can't check out.
dan friesen
Uh, she goes missing, and then I think it's around a week, week and a half later, uh, it gets, it starts to get more serious.
It's like, oh, she's gone.
marty derosa
Her family at some point comes down.
Missing from the Hotel 00:02:51
marty derosa
They put it on the news.
dan friesen
Her cell phone is entirely missing, and even despite all of the stuff that we're gonna get into has still not been found.
unidentified
Yeah.
marty derosa
Uh, no signs of struggle in the room.
dan friesen
Nope, not necessarily.
And on February 19th, They find her body in the water tower on top of the roof of the hotel.
marty derosa
Now let's backtrack a little bit.
unidentified
Yes.
marty derosa
Uh, there were searches all over the building.
dan friesen
They could not go into every room though.
marty derosa
They couldn't go into every room, but some of the people staying at the hotel started complaining.
unidentified
Yes.
marty derosa
About the water.
When they would turn on the water, uh, for a couple seconds at least, the water would be black.
dan friesen
There was discoloration.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
And a weird taste in the water.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
Which is, that, that, those reports are kind of apocryphal.
In the sense that, like, I couldn't find anything that seemed concrete.
unidentified
Oh, really?
Okay.
dan friesen
I think it's probably true.
marty derosa
I saw a video of a woman talking about it, but she seemed way too calm.
dan friesen
Yeah.
marty derosa
And I was kinda like crisis actor?
You are a crisis actor, or actress, uh, you're way too chill about this, you, you, I mean, I don't wanna spoil, well, you know, go ahead, Lo Dan.
dan friesen
Well, yeah, there, there was low water pressure too, was what, uh, that was, that's the most, like, definite thing that, uh, that led them to search the water tank.
unidentified
Right.
dan friesen
Up on, up on the roof.
And, uh, the, actually I have a quote from the, uh, the guy who found her.
marty derosa
You really, you really did some investigating on it.
dan friesen
I did some research.
marty derosa
I really appreciate that.
dan friesen
I listened to the old episodes that we did of this and I found them to be lacking in details.
marty derosa
I always, I always remember, uh, and I think I talked about this before, uh, maybe when we were talking about the, the previous, that's what they want you to think, but I remember I, I had a term paper when I was in, uh, high school and I just really was like, whatever.
And, uh, we had to pick like an author and I think I picked like E.E. Cummings and the, uh, the, the thing that, that my teacher wrote.
On my paper was, you're trying to get blood out of a turnip.
Meaning I had like three facts about him and I just kept going with it.
dan friesen
It's the right color, but it ain't the right thing.
unidentified
Yup.
dan friesen
Uh, so the guy's name is Santiago Lopez is the name of the maintenance man at the Hotel Cecil.
marty derosa
Which is what I want, why I like love that that's his name.
dan friesen
Sure, it's a great name.
marty derosa
Such a great name for a maintenance man at a hotel.
dan friesen
Uh, he found her in the tank because all of the complaints were coming in of the water pressure and he found her face up about a foot from the opening.
And now if you think about that, a foot is not very far to be away from the top of the tank.
But also, it had been three weeks, almost a month, so there's gotta be some fluctuation in the water level.
So who knows where it was when she went in.
unidentified
Right.
dan friesen
Beyond that, uh, she was naked, and all of her clothes and personal effects were in the tank with her.
Logistics of the Tank 00:06:39
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
Which doesn't seem that suspicious when you actually look at it, because if you're drowning and you have to keep treading water, clothes are heavy.
marty derosa
You gotta get the clothes off.
dan friesen
So that kind of makes sense.
That part doesn't bother me that much.
unidentified
Right.
dan friesen
And the clothes would sink more than a human body would, and so that would clog the drain more in terms of like the water release.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
So all that kind of matches up into A coherent thing.
unidentified
Sure.
marty derosa
And, and I mean, it's easy to just go, ah, this girl got fucked up or something, and she was being a weirdo on the roof of the building.
But then you gotta think about the logistics of her getting up to that water tower.
Which, from my research shows, it is, you gotta know Santiago to get up there.
dan friesen
You would have to know an employee generally.
marty derosa
Yeah.
dan friesen
You'd assume.
marty derosa
They were, they, the, from, from what I recall in my research, aka being stoned watching videos on YouTube, uh, there's no way she had access to that building.
I mean, to that, to those levels.
dan friesen
If everything was going as it should, that is correct.
marty derosa
Okay.
dan friesen
But this is where also we get into some difficulty.
There are four, according to Santiago Lopez.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
There are four ways to get up to the roof.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
Three are fire escapes that would automatically trigger an alarm.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
The fourth is a staircase that's located on the 14th floor.
Now, you could get into that staircase easily, but once you exit to the roof, that would trigger an alarm.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
So, all of those alarms can be deactivated.
In fact, he did deactivate them when he went up to search the roof.
marty derosa
Okay.
dan friesen
So, There's no way for anyone to know if the alarms were deactivated that night.
unidentified
Right.
dan friesen
Or anything like that.
So we don't have that information.
But if they were, you could get up to the roof.
marty derosa
You could.
dan friesen
Yeah.
marty derosa
Now, the reason why this conspiracy theory is as popular or salacious as it is, is because of the video.
unidentified
Yes.
marty derosa
This is, this is the bread and butter of this.
And this, I mean, if there were no video, this would still be one of those weird things where you'd be like, oh, okay, sure, maybe.
unidentified
That's weird.
marty derosa
I don't know.
dan friesen
That's a humdinger.
marty derosa
But, Oh man, oh man.
Does the conspiracy theory gods give us a treat on this one?
dan friesen
There's a whole lot to unpack there.
Uh, about a week before she was found, they released a video of her in the elevator, uh, of the hotel.
marty derosa
Some of you might at home might be going, oh shit, I did see this.
dan friesen
Yeah, yeah, a lot of people have seen it and probably forgotten.
But it's a chilling kind of thing because you know she's gonna die.
marty derosa
I famously did this in the elevator today coming up to Dan's apartment.
unidentified
You did.
dan friesen
You, uh, you mockingly pretended you were a dead woman.
marty derosa
I did it out of love.
And of respect.
And of respect, and we're gonna crack this case open today, so it's all for her.
dan friesen
Uh, she is seen in the elevator, and she gets in and presses a couple buttons, and it's kind of unclear which buttons she's pressing.
marty derosa
Yes.
dan friesen
Uh, then the door doesn't close.
marty derosa
Not at all, not for a while.
dan friesen
She jumps out of the elevator, and is sort of looking around, and it appears that she's talking to someone, or at least gesticulating at somebody, then comes back into the elevator and hides against the wall, like right in the corner.
marty derosa
It would look to the uninitiated that She's playing a little adorable game of hide and seek or something like that.
dan friesen
Because she does not appear that scared.
unidentified
No.
No.
marty derosa
And, and then, I mean, obviously we'll get into all the different theories about it, but it's one of those things, yeah, it's very chilling when you watch it and realize, you know, she dies.
dan friesen
She ends up, uh, mysteriously in a water tank hours later.
marty derosa
Yeah.
So there's a lot of, I mean, we're gonna get into all the different things or whatever about this.
dan friesen
I wanna, I wanna deal with the video, a couple things about it real quick.
marty derosa
Take the lead.
dan friesen
Take the lead.
So then she, she hits all the buttons then after she comes back in and is scared.
And then exits the elevator and leaves.
She ends up leaving and then the elevator door closes and you can see it go to other floors.
Some amateur detectives have gone in and tried to figure out what they can about the elevator itself, and they found that if you hit the buttons that she hits, the delay in the elevator door closing is what's demonstrated in the video.
unidentified
Oh, okay, okay.
dan friesen
So that part is not, like, the most suspicious thing.
It does seem weird, and if I were in the elevator, I'd be freaked out as hell.
marty derosa
Because it's taking this long?
dan friesen
Yea, it takes for fucking ever.
The other thing that they found, uhm, was that some people have tried to match up the timestamp That timestamp's very hard to read.
It's very blurry, but they tried to match it up with real time time passing.
And there's a pretty reasonable theory that it's been slowed down and that at least a minute is missing.
unidentified
Ooh.
A minute is missing.
marty derosa
I did see that where it jumps.
unidentified
Yeah.
marty derosa
Did you see the one where that guy's by his computer?
Did you watch the one video where the guy's by his computer?
dan friesen
I don't know if I did.
marty derosa
Okay.
I watched that one and he definitely talks about, he's like, it goes like three to five.
And the timestamp And, you know, I always, I always do appreciate when somebody's like, here's what probably might have happened here.
And they were saying, you know, with the tape and a lot of these tapes are used over and over again.
dan friesen
They can get degraded a little bit.
marty derosa
They can.
And, uh, so the timestamp is a little bit compromised.
dan friesen
And there's also another reasonable theory that I don't think is the truth necessarily, but I could see.
Now let's imagine a scenario where a completely innocent person walks past the elevator while all this is happening.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
I don't think it's unreasonable to cut that out of the thing that you release to the public.
If the police thoroughly checked that person.
marty derosa
Okay, okay.
Or something like that, and they just don't want to reveal at all, like, let's say a Dan Dries is coming back to his room, uh, and he, and maybe, maybe, like, looks in the elevator and is like, I'll take the stairs.
unidentified
Yeah.
marty derosa
I don't know what's going on here, and just keeps walking.
dan friesen
There is a plausible argument.
marty derosa
Cause all of a sudden you've created a new thin man or something like this, like, who, who is this guy?
dan friesen
Who's this smiley guy?
marty derosa
Who's this smiley young boy, the baby, babyface assassin?
unidentified
Mm-hmm.
dan friesen
Exactly.
So I, I could see that.
There's a hundred different possibilities that were like, That makes sense to me, but then there's a bunch of other ones that are nefarious.
marty derosa
Yes, and that's what we're gonna, we're gonna delve into.
dan friesen
So, she's in that elevator, she freaks out and all that, gets off, and then later is found in the tank.
Now what's interesting about the elevator too, and these amateur detectives, is they've determined that she had to have been on the 14th floor when she got off the elevator.
All of that you see in the elevator happened on the 14th floor by virtue of the exterior, how it looks in the hallway, and by the fact that she pressed the 14th floor button And it lights up and then goes off immediately because it's already on that floor.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
So they've, they've found that.
And as we know, there is a staircase that goes up to the roof from the 14th floor.
Elevator Rituals and Games 00:08:21
dan friesen
And, uh, ba ba ba ba.
I lost my thought.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
So we, we, the stage is set there.
marty derosa
Okay.
So she was definitely on the 14th floor.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
And her room was on the 4th floor.
That was the room I was gonna get to.
unidentified
Yeah.
marty derosa
So.
dan friesen
What is she doing up there to begin with?
marty derosa
What is she doing up there?
dan friesen
Very strange.
unidentified
Okay.
marty derosa
Uh, We'll just get this out of the way real quick.
It's one of my, it's one of my favorite little, uh, also there was a really bad movie made about this.
unidentified
No?
dan friesen
Not about it.
Before it.
unidentified
What?
dan friesen
Are you talking about the Jennifer Connolly movie, Dark Water?
marty derosa
No, no, no, no.
unidentified
Oh, okay.
marty derosa
No, no, no, no.
There's a really bad, like, movie about this.
dan friesen
I don't, I don't know about this movie.
marty derosa
It's got like a little girl, like the shining type of twins in the hallway and talking to her and stuff like that.
dan friesen
Is it a Japanese movie?
unidentified
No.
dan friesen
I think you're thinking of Dark Water.
marty derosa
No, no, no.
There's an Asian girl who's the star of the movie and she's very friendly with her cab driver and it's, it's Bad.
It's real bad.
dan friesen
Okay, so it's maybe a made for TV movie, even?
marty derosa
Yeah, it looks, or just a really low-budge horror movie.
dan friesen
Okay, okay.
I know that, like, uh, they were going to make, at least, at least someone was going to make a movie based on this, so that's probably what you're referring to.
marty derosa
Yeah, I'm sure it'll be in the works if it, if it hasn't already, but.
dan friesen
I did not see that.
marty derosa
The okay, one of the things that I saw one time, which really spooked me out, was this idea that there's some numbers game you can play in an elevator that will take you to another universe.
dan friesen
It takes you to the other world.
marty derosa
To the other world.
And it's like you press two buttons at the same time, then you wait a minute.
dan friesen
Not quite.
marty derosa
30 seconds.
dan friesen
You're close.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
You're close.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
Uh, from what I've been able to gather, This is a internet meme kind of thing from, I would assume from Reddit or some version of 4chan or something like that.
Some place on the internet creates these spooky things.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
And then they become, like Slender Man.
unidentified
Sure.
dan friesen
You know, it just becomes these things.
marty derosa
Yeah.
Oh, I said Thin Man.
I meant Slender Man.
dan friesen
That's a synonym.
marty derosa
What is Thin Man from?
dan friesen
Thin Man is another, like, really spooky thing, I think.
Okay.
I know that it is something.
It's not nothing.
But, so the game, as it is, goes like this.
The Thin Man was a movie starring.
Margaret O'Sullivan.
marty derosa
Of course.
dan friesen
That's probably what you were thinking of.
marty derosa
Yeah, of course.
I celebrate her catalog.
dan friesen
It's from 1934.
marty derosa
I love it.
I love old cinema.
dan friesen
Uh, so the game is essentially played, uh, with, uh, now, I want to be clear when I start this out.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
That this is the least credible theory in my mind.
marty derosa
Oh, sure.
This is just one, that's why I want to get it out of the way.
unidentified
Okay.
marty derosa
I like it.
If you guys have an elevator, uh, call us, talk us through it.
dan friesen
You need an elevator that goes up to the tenth, at least ten floors.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
And you get on alone on the first floor.
And I don't remember the sequence of floors, but it's something like four, then two, then eight.
marty derosa
You're going up and down a lot.
dan friesen
Yeah.
And you have to do them in order.
You can't press all the buttons at once.
unidentified
Yes, yes.
dan friesen
And then it's like four floors in, uh, you hit five.
unidentified
Uh huh.
dan friesen
And you go to the fifth floor, and a girl enters the elevator.
unidentified
Uh huh.
dan friesen
If you've done it right.
And you're alone.
And if the girl enters the elevator, you're not allowed to look at her or talk to her, or else she will claim you.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
Uh, so, uh, she gets in.
Don't look at her.
Hit floor one at that point when she gets in.
If the elevator goes up, you're, you're in.
If it goes down, you've done it wrong and you better get the fuck out of the elevator when it gets to the first floor.
It goes to the tenth floor.
She will ask you, where are you going?
You do not respond because if you respond, she got you.
marty derosa
She's yours.
dan friesen
But as soon as you don't respond, you look around and she's gone.
You're alone in the elevator.
You exit and now you're in a whole different world.
unidentified
Fuck yes.
marty derosa
Warp zone.
dan friesen
Yeah, but there's- Yeah.
You can find a bunch of comments of people online who like, I did this and it has haunted me.
marty derosa
Oh, that's what I love.
dan friesen
But it's all this stuff that's completely unverifiable and it's very hard to give any credence to an internet commenter.
marty derosa
It seems very, very much like a new thing that kind of caught on.
Not in like a dirty Sanchez type of thing where people just started- They pretend they've done these sexual things.
Of course, this is great.
Everyone does it.
Yeah.
I know a guy in college who did all those.
unidentified
Mmhm.
Yeah, yeah.
marty derosa
He made it his sexual bucket list.
dan friesen
Yeah, that guy- Is an asshole and didn't do those things.
unidentified
Nah, not at all.
dan friesen
But is still an asshole.
unidentified
But okay, so.
dan friesen
So the thing is, like, eh, I don't believe that is true.
That thing, that sort of thing is true.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
It's out of like a horror movie or some fun internet writing.
But, if I were in an elevator and I was trying to do that, I'd be scared as shit.
marty derosa
If you, it would be.
dan friesen
I would be so scared.
marty derosa
You have to be alone.
dan friesen
Yeah.
But I was- And I don't know if you can have anyone on the phone either.
marty derosa
That's what I was gonna say, like, or just like, if you don't, if you didn't have to be alone and we were on like an elevator going somewhere and like, I remember, like, if you and I were on the elevator, I'd still be scared.
Could you imagine, like, Don's old elevator, our old therapist downtown, downtown, if we were on his?
That elevator in that building would have been perfect.
dan friesen
It's a spooky little elevator.
unidentified
Fuck yeah.
dan friesen
Alright, so that's out of the way.
Some people say that they think she was trying to do that ritual.
marty derosa
Is it an Asian thing or something?
dan friesen
I believe its roots are in Korea.
marty derosa
Okay.
dan friesen
But she's Chinese.
marty derosa
Okay, she's Chinese.
dan friesen
Yeah.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
She's Chinese by way of Canada.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
And so, that doesn't mean that she couldn't know a Korean thing.
unidentified
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
dan friesen
But it just seems stupid.
unidentified
Okay.
marty derosa
Perfect.
dan friesen
She's college educated.
marty derosa
I mean did she go to the Harvard of the North?
dan friesen
She did not go to Banting.
So, I don't know, that, that one's, that one's a little, a little out there.
unidentified
Okay.
marty derosa
And I just wanted to throw that out there.
It's, let's get it out of here.
dan friesen
Would, would you do that?
unidentified
Well.
dan friesen
Could you get yourself to do that?
marty derosa
When I started watching it, and, and thinking about it, first of all, I, directions are not my thing.
So, instantly, like, smoke's coming out of my ears, and I'm like, I don't even remember how to do this.
I wouldn't, like, I'm not a candy man in the mirror three times kind of guy back when that was hot.
dan friesen
Sure, sure.
marty derosa
I am not.
I don't, I don't like to, uh, I don't like to mess with dark spirits.
I don't go to, I don't go to, uh, cemeteries at night.
Even though that's where my type of girls hang out, uh, back in the day.
dan friesen
I would assume.
marty derosa
I would have loved to have been there with you guys.
But, I just, I don't, I don't fuck with the dark spirits.
dan friesen
The dark arts are a dangerous game.
marty derosa
I really, they are.
And I don't, I don't fuck with them that much.
Uh, if there's videos that I'm getting a little too scared from, I will, I will go right to some wacky wrestling.
I'm going right to, you know, Shockmaster falling through a, through a door, or through the wall, sorry.
dan friesen
The, the thing that sticks out to me about something like this is like, the payoff seems like zero.
It's like, what's the good, The only information I could get about what this other world is supposed to be, it's like, you're still on the tenth floor of this building.
But now things aren't how you remember them.
Everything is dark, all the lights are off, and there's a bright red cross out the window.
If you look out the window, you see a bright red cross.
Which is like, okay, so now you see this.
The only benefit of that is realizing that the world is not what we thought it was.
That's the only thing.
marty derosa
I mean, I would like to think maybe it's one of those things like you, you come out of the elevator and it's like, you know, the thirties and you're in a tuxedo and a, at a wild gala event or something and you're just like, oh shit.
dan friesen
It turns into, uh, shining.
unidentified
Exactly.
dan friesen
That, that, uh, doesn't seem like a great payoff either though.
marty derosa
Well, I mean, I know that's my, I sometimes I think about that too.
Like if I could go back in time knowing what I know now, like how could I really cash in on that?
I don't know.
Buy AOL Time Warner stock and then sell it before they go out of business.
I don't know.
dan friesen
You could do that or, I mean, it depends on when you jumped to like, If you know a bit about sports history and stuff like that, you can use that, but then you got the butterfly effect to think of.
Yeah, there's some of that.
But also, like, it would be great if you studied up on sports history and you're like, oh, I'm ready for this.
You time jump back, but you go to like the 20s.
And it's like, fuck, I don't know anything about the 20s.
marty derosa
I know, I don't know, the Black Sox did something weird.
I don't know, shit.
dan friesen
I'm gonna bet on the Negro League.
marty derosa
Yeah, I know, it's like, my dates might be off for a little bit, but.
I'll just tell my child, like, don't bet on the Buffalo Bills and then I die, that's all.
dan friesen
That'd be, I mean, yeah.
unidentified
Yeah.
marty derosa
Anyway.
dan friesen
But then you'd have a kid, there's a time ripple there.
marty derosa
That's what I'm saying.
dan friesen
Uhm, but.
Alright, so that's out of- So anyway, my point is all outcomes seem bad.
Sports History and Weirdness 00:15:50
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
From this.
So I would never mess with this.
marty derosa
We're, we're, we're taking this off the table.
We don't want you, we don't even want you guys to try it.
unidentified
Yeah.
marty derosa
If you got an elevator.
dan friesen
Freezing pointer sisters out there, don't do it.
marty derosa
Don't fuck with them dark arts.
dan friesen
Uh, so, taking aside for a second the idea that alarms would go off or the doors would be locked or those sorts of things for her to get onto the roof.
unidentified
Mm-hmm.
dan friesen
Let's assume she can get onto the roof.
This introduces a whole new series of dilemmas.
marty derosa
How are you getting into that water tower?
With a little Asian girl body.
dan friesen
Right, and that's not to say that she's a weakling or anything like that.
unidentified
No, not at all.
dan friesen
But the, the tanks are situated on an elevated platform.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
So you would have to climb up that platform.
And then you would have to squeeze in between the tanks and in between a lot of like plumbing equipment to find the ladder that leads to the top of them.
It's not like the ladder is just there.
marty derosa
Yeah.
dan friesen
You have to, you'd have to go find it.
You'd have to get up on top of it and then lift the lid.
marty derosa
Which is how I, I read that was quite heavy.
dan friesen
It's, I've, This is another thing that there's conflicting reports on.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
A lot of people say like, that thing's fucking heavy.
marty derosa
I heard like hundreds of pounds.
dan friesen
I don't think so.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
I think that's pretty high.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
I think one of those lids, you could probably clock it in at like 50 pounds or something like that.
Which is still not nothing.
unidentified
Sure.
dan friesen
Uh, I think that she would reasonably be able to lift the lid, but closing it behind her would be another issue.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
Because no lid like that would have a handle on the inside.
marty derosa
Or it not closing on you when you're trying to slip in to this water tank.
dan friesen
But if that were the case, she would have had abrasions and things like that.
unidentified
Right, right.
dan friesen
Her body didn't show any kind of trauma like that, that would come from like getting, falling in in some like violent way.
So all of that kind of, it's very, it doesn't really make sense.
There is a way it could have happened, but it's like all these really weird circumstances would have to line up.
marty derosa
The stars would have to align.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
So, one way or another it did.
marty derosa
I mean they did, she was in there.
unidentified
Yeah.
marty derosa
Uhm, okay.
So you, you.
dan friesen
Oh, oh, just a couple more medical facts before we get into some more, uh, uh, the, She was, uh, bipolar in theory.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
There's no, there's no like set diagnosis of her.
There's no document that says, Alyssa Lamb, bipolar.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
But she was on medications that are generally, uh, for, uh, bipolar disorders.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
She was on like a Fexer, Seroquil, Welbutrin, and those sorts of things.
Many of them were not in her bloodstream or in her body to a, uh, recognizable amount when they took her out of the tank.
marty derosa
So some may say she was off her meds.
dan friesen
It's possible, but who's to say, I'm not entirely sure if those things would be, uh, detectable after being it submerged in water for three weeks.
marty derosa
Yeah, for sure.
dan friesen
So I have no idea what the case is with that.
Uh, they, she was not positive for drugs, uh, like heroin or any of those sorts of drugs.
Uh, they did a rape kit apparently, but didn't process it.
unidentified
Interesting.
dan friesen
Which is, it sounds fishy, but it isn't the most uncommon thing, because everyone who saw her said that she was alone.
Like anybody who, there was a lady at the gift shop that she went to the day before she disappeared, and everyone at the hotel, like the front desk people said she was alone.
marty derosa
There was never a, a Dandries type.
dan friesen
There's no thin man.
marty derosa
I love how Dan's our, our guy on this.
dan friesen
Uh, so there's no, there, there wasn't a reason for them to suspect anything.
marty derosa
Oh, I believe, I believe she went to a taping of Conan.
unidentified
Did she?
marty derosa
I did, yeah, I believe so.
dan friesen
I didn't, I didn't get that from my research.
marty derosa
I believe she did.
dan friesen
So it was Richter, right?
Andy Richter did.
marty derosa
I'm not saying.
dan friesen
Uh, they did find a pool of, like, Blood pooled up in her anus.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
And her anus was prolapsed.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
But that doesn't mean necessarily that there is a sexual assault.
It could be, the coroner said that it could be a result of being in the water.
marty derosa
And then, and also when you die, sometimes your body does stuff.
You evacuate.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
Uh, yeah, so that, that stuff is like, it, it's, it could be an indication of something, but it could also not be.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
So again, it's like this, this murky area.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
So where's your head at?
unidentified
Okay.
marty derosa
Uh, a couple different things.
unidentified
Mmhm.
marty derosa
There's my first, you know, I mean, when these, when these sort of like, you know, I don't know if this is the right word, but more of these like sexy conspiracy theories or, or, or situations start to happen, uh, people who are into these things kind of let their minds wander.
And there are those instances of like, well, how did this happen?
And it's like, well, here's how it happened.
And you're like, oh, okay, yeah, that makes sense.
Um, so I start looking at this and I started with the Korean elevator game.
I mean, that just took me into a whole nother realm.
No pun intended, but just like, You know, that, that was one of those where I was like, that got me, uh, maybe took my eyes off what was happening.
unidentified
Okay.
marty derosa
But when I really started delving into this, uh, of course there's, um, just, you know, this girl was off her meds, uh, and I, listen, I, I, I don't know if you've ever done this.
Have you ever been just drunk and been like, I'm just going to climb that fence and see what's going on over there.
dan friesen
A hundred percent.
marty derosa
I, uh, there's a treehouse in my neighborhood and I one time almost was like, I'm going in that treehouse.
dan friesen
Yeah, we, we drove past that house when we were in Indiana and you pointed it out to me.
marty derosa
Yeah, I was like, oh no, no, that was another, that was, that was another one that I always wanted to get in.
dan friesen
Oh, that's right, that's right.
marty derosa
But no, there, and there's just things like that where there's, there are, there are just kind of like, we used to call them physical challenges as kids, uh, just being like, let's get on the roof of that place.
dan friesen
Yeah.
marty derosa
Whatever.
dan friesen
Between childhood-ness and intoxication, either of those things can lead you to do things that make no sense.
marty derosa
Absolutely.
And that's where, had I not seen the elevator video, I would have thought it's probably what she did.
But, seeing the elevator video just, Kind of makes you throw a lot of logic out the window.
unidentified
Yes.
marty derosa
Cause I, I, I'm weirded out by what I saw and I'm also very, very much inquisitive and questioning what the fuck was going on.
unidentified
Yeah.
marty derosa
Now, then you bring in our old buddies, the secret society.
You know what I mean?
And then you start reading about maybe this was some type of ritual or maybe there was some real creepy stuff going on there.
unidentified
Sure.
marty derosa
Mind control possibly.
Uh, you know, so then you start hearing that stuff and again, Uh, once you see this elevator video, you start to go, mmm.
dan friesen
Which you can easily Google.
And you can just go ahead and watch it if you haven't watched it, so any of this will make sense.
marty derosa
Go into YouTube and just write elevator, and it'll be like, we know what you wanna see.
We know what the fuck you wanna see.
Um, so then you start seeing that, and you start to go, what the fuck is going on?
And, uh.
dan friesen
When you watch the video, it does appear, like we said, that she's interacting with something.
marty derosa
Something or someone.
dan friesen
That leads me to one of two conclusions.
One of them is hallucinations.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
Which could be caused by drugs.
Or it could be caused by a bipolar break, a psychotic episode from going off medication.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
That's one option.
The other option is there's actually somebody there who knows where the camera is and is like holding the button or something like that on the elevator and fucking around.
It's entirely possible that that is the case.
unidentified
Sure.
dan friesen
Also, if it was someone who lived there longer term, they would know those sort of things.
marty derosa
The ins and outs of the building.
dan friesen
Especially the kind of creeps who gravitate towards that hotel.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
Uh, and, If you live there a long time, you might know sneaky ways to get around.
unidentified
You might.
dan friesen
I know that almost every place I've ever lived, uh, up until the point I was like maybe 28 or so, cause I just kinda got bored with it, I'd always try and find ways to get around, like on the roof, try and find ways to get, just, I love to find like secret passageways and things like that.
I can only assume that someone who lived at that fucking creep ass hotel for any period of time would be like, I wanna know the ins and outs.
marty derosa
Right, and that's where you start thinking if there are some evil people there, and there's a girl, From Canada by herself, 21, that's a target.
unidentified
Yeah.
marty derosa
She's got a big target on her back.
dan friesen
Uh huh.
If you're a creep living there, and conceivably naive.
marty derosa
Sure.
dan friesen
Uh, but clearly has some issues with mental health.
marty derosa
Sure.
dan friesen
May, may have, uh, some erratic behaviors that can make you a target very easily.
marty derosa
But also too, even if everything is going a-okay and you just see this girl by herself, maybe you can strike up a conversation.
Oh, where are you from?
I'm from Canada.
Oh, okay, okay.
dan friesen
Yeah.
Well, she did have a blog.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
And, uh, she had posted something about, uh, a couple dudes who were kind of creeping her out a little bit at the hotel.
marty derosa
No more real specific information about them is known, but that was something that So what, what sort of are the, the big sort of the, you know, JFK, you know, like Oswald acted alone, well actually it was the CIA, I mean what are sort of the, the big like, here's what might have happened with this?
dan friesen
Well, here is the odds on rational explanation.
This is what people who are big into logic and Occam's razor would say.
marty derosa
Okay.
dan friesen
She was on very heavy.
marty derosa
What, explain Occam's razor again?
dan friesen
The easiest explanation is always the correct, or is most likely the correct one.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
Uh, she was on these heavy medications, and she conceivably was not taking the ones that would have stopped a manic episode.
And so she has a manic episode, she freaks out, is acting pretty crazy, doesn't know what floor she's on, hits all the buttons, is kind of freaking out, ends up on the roof.
Now there's other variations on how like this could have gone.
There's one theory that she got up on top of the thing and then saw like an employee having a cigarette break or something like that.
Got scared, jumped in the tank, and then realized, ah shit, I can't get out of here.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
That's one theory.
Any variation of accidentally falling in after a manic episode is sort of the reasonable explanation.
unidentified
Alright.
dan friesen
Beyond that, if you want to factor in foul play, there is an idea that she could have been, uh, lured to the roof.
It's much more difficult to assume that someone might have killed her and then brought her to the roof.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
Cause then you'd have to drag a body Up to the roof and up on top of the, you have to bring her up the ladder.
marty derosa
It seems, uh, like, uh.
dan friesen
It's a thousand gallon tank.
Like, it's huge.
Sure.
marty derosa
And, and it also, I mean, the way that they found her, there really wasn't anything going on.
I mean, that's one of those where you can just be like, maybe just toss her off the roof and look like a suicide.
dan friesen
Yeah.
Yeah.
And if she was trying to commit suicide, there's a deep history there of people throwing themselves out windows.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
It seems like that would be one of the worst ways to commit suicide is.
I'm gonna drown myself in this tank.
marty derosa
That doesn't seem like a way people commit suicide.
dan friesen
It's gonna take forever for me to run out of arm strength and then choke.
marty derosa
I don't see that as a way someone would commit suicide.
dan friesen
I agree.
That to me is inconceivable.
The accident and murder are the two, like, sort of most likely.
Paranormal and, uh, uh, like, sort of ritual stuff is hard to wrap my head around.
marty derosa
Okay.
dan friesen
But there's weird coincidences that we can't get around.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
What did you just write down?
marty derosa
What do her parents think?
dan friesen
I don't know.
I do know.
I don't think they've made any real statements.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
But they did try and sue the hotel for wrongful death.
marty derosa
Okay.
dan friesen
And the case got thrown out.
marty derosa
Alright.
And what if the police ruled it?
Just an accidental death?
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
Accidental death.
Not suicide.
They're unclear on the details.
marty derosa
Okay.
dan friesen
But they ruled it an accident and not foul play.
marty derosa
Poor parents, man.
dan friesen
Yeah.
marty derosa
That's a fucking bomber.
dan friesen
It'd be a fucking nightmare.
marty derosa
Did the Canadian government say anything?
Like, hey, America.
Come on, man.
unidentified
I don't know.
marty derosa
What's going on here?
dan friesen
I don't know how much Canada gets involved in this story.
I think they might want to just how do you feel?
marty derosa
Where does this rank as far as some of the top conspiracy theories or?
dan friesen
Well, so far we haven't gotten into stuff that makes it a conspiracy.
marty derosa
Okay.
dan friesen
Now here's where the conspiracy stuff comes in for me.
marty derosa
Oh yeah, lay it on me.
dan friesen
So.
marty derosa
This is why you get paid the big bucks.
dan friesen
In Los Angeles, right around that exact same time, within a couple weeks, maybe a week and a half or so of when her body was found, there was an outbreak of tuberculosis in Skid Row.
And it was a particularly virulent strain of, uh, tuberculosis.
marty derosa
I, I, I know where this is going and I love it.
dan friesen
Uh, the commercial testing kit for, uh, tuberculosis is called Lamb Alyssa.
unidentified
Oh boy.
dan friesen
Her name is Alyssa Lamb, which is very, very cool.
marty derosa
I'm getting chills.
I'm getting chills right now.
dan friesen
I looked into it a little bit and the Lamb stands for lipo, uh, arabinomanon.
It's like one long word.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
Uh, and I don't know what that means, but I think it's a fun word and I think it has something to do with fats.
Cause lipo seems to be like lipid.
I'm not entirely sure.
marty derosa
Liposuction?
dan friesen
Yeah, yeah.
So, um, That to me is an all, all, like a coincidence that is almost impossible.
marty derosa
And also, when you're talking about like a tuberculosis outbreak and things like that and medication, it's kind of like, well where would you want to test this out on?
We need some rats.
unidentified
Yeaah.
marty derosa
We need some test subjects.
dan friesen
Now if we want to get like, you know, super rational, you could say these are some of the most unhealthy people in the world.
marty derosa
Absolutely.
dan friesen
Uh, so they would also be at higher risk of just getting tuberculosis natural.
unidentified
And just that's true.
marty derosa
Drug use.
dan friesen
Hobo sex.
It's gonna be the next, uh, video series.
Uh, like bum fights.
marty derosa
Yeah, hobo sex.
dan friesen
Uh, the people who did assessments of the water that was at the hotel, uh, didn't find that it was contaminated with anything.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
So the idea that maybe she was, had this TB and it was used to like disperse it, that isn't as compelling.
marty derosa
Oh, like her body was an agent for it.
Yeah, put her in the thing and then they'll all get it.
dan friesen
Like she was responsible for the outbreak.
marty derosa
Patient zero.
dan friesen
Yeah, and as a, like the name is a joke.
marty derosa
It's crazy though that the name.
dan friesen
The name is very, very difficult to get around.
marty derosa
This is where I want to know, like, her family's like, wait, what?
Like, that's, I mean, bullshit.
dan friesen
It's to the point where it sounds fake.
marty derosa
Yeah.
dan friesen
And I would not really care about this that much if there weren't articles, like, in reputable sources of, hey, there's an outbreak of tuberculosis at the, like, days off of when she was discovered in 2013.
marty derosa
Yeah.
dan friesen
And if you can't, if I couldn't have found online proof That Lamb Alyssa is an actual TB test.
unidentified
God.
dan friesen
It's fucking weird.
marty derosa
That is very weird.
dan friesen
Now add that to this.
That movie Dark Water.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
Okay.
It is a movie from 2005 starring Jennifer Conley.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
Have you ever seen it?
unidentified
No.
Okay.
dan friesen
To give you a brief version of the plot, uh, Jennifer Conley stars as a woman named Dahlia.
Which is already not a common name.
marty derosa
Not at all.
dan friesen
For a person.
unidentified
Not.
dan friesen
In 2005.
unidentified
At all.
marty derosa
It's one of those, uh, Hitler names.
There's a lot of, not a lot of Hitlers around anymore.
dan friesen
It's a trigger name.
unidentified
You know?
dan friesen
It means something.
Whenever you put that as a name in a script, it's a signifier for the Black Dahlia.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
And Jennifer Connolly has beautiful, dark hair.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
It's very, okay.
Hitler Names and Scripts 00:11:33
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
So she plays this woman, she's got a daughter, and they live in this building, and there's a bunch of dark water coming out of the walls, and, and, and dripping, and stuff like this.
And, uh, so they, like, they get all freaked out, and all this, and, uh, eventually, They find, uh, that there is a girl in the water tank on the roof.
marty derosa
Get the fuck out of here.
dan friesen
Yeah, they find that there is a girl who had been like abandoned who ended up in the water tank on the roof.
That's causing all these problems.
unidentified
Oh my god.
dan friesen
And the lady, or the girl who's in the tank, shows up as a ghost and wants basically Jennifer Conley to be her mom.
So she's like, save my, like, don't kill my daughter and I'll be your mom forever.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
So they become ghost family together.
And there's a scene at the end where they're in an elevator and the ghost mom, Jennifer Conley, is doing her daughter's hair.
And the elevator is like glitching.
So it's like the elevator, dark water, the name Dahlia, and get this.
What is Jennifer Conley's daughter's name in the movie?
Cecilia.
Cecil.
unidentified
Oh shit.
dan friesen
It's, what the fuck?
Those correlations are too, the thematic resonance of the movie, the names, Dahlia, Cecil, it's, it's, it's crazy.
marty derosa
Would you, would you spend the night at that hotel?
unidentified
No!
dan friesen
I probably wouldn't have even before this, but no.
I think it looked like, it looks like a shit hotel.
unidentified
Yeah.
marty derosa
It has nothing to do with spookiness, it's just I think they tried to, I think most, I think recently they really tried to upgrade it or something like that.
dan friesen
Uh, they renamed it like Stay on Main, I think is the name of it.
marty derosa
Yeah, yeah.
dan friesen
And then it's also, Last I heard, it was like slated for demolition.
marty derosa
Okay.
dan friesen
So they may be taking it down.
marty derosa
Maybe.
dan friesen
But that, the TB test, the Dark Water stuff, like, cause that was eight years prior.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
And that movie, Dark Water, was based on a Japanese movie from 2002.
unidentified
So.
marty derosa
This was back in the craze when we were remaking Japanese movies, like they were going out of style, horror movies.
dan friesen
And they did, they got out of style.
marty derosa
And they did go out of style.
unidentified
Ringu?
dan friesen
Yeah, so that, like, eight, ten years prior, there is this thematic thing that gets replayed in real life.
Which is fucking nuts.
marty derosa
Yeah.
dan friesen
So I don't know what to make of it.
marty derosa
What got you the most when we, when in your research or just have, have looking at this in the past?
What kind of made you be a little like, oobley?
dan friesen
The dark water stuff, the names is, is weird.
The test was what made me think like this can't be, something's up here.
But then another thing happened that when you told me you wanted to do this episode, I thought this happened a lot longer ago than three years ago.
unidentified
Yeah.
marty derosa
No, this is, this is like fresh off the press.
dan friesen
I legitimately thought this happened like eight years ago.
unidentified
No.
dan friesen
And I don't think it's because of that movie, the Darkwater movie.
I don't, I didn't see that when it was in theaters.
I didn't care about it at all.
marty derosa
Yeah, I remember, uh, not a Dateline NBC, but maybe a 2020 about this.
And I was like, what the fuck?
And then I went online and I was like, whoa.
dan friesen
When you suggested it, I was like, that's old news.
No, it's not.
marty derosa
It's really not.
dan friesen
To me, there was some sort of weird temporal time shift in my brain.
It's sort of a little bit like that Mandela effect thing, where a lot of people thought Nelson Mandela died at a different time than he did.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
Or that he's still alive or these sorts of things.
There's, there was some part of me that was like, I could've swore that happened a lot longer ago.
marty derosa
Very interesting.
dan friesen
Yeah, so that was weird.
marty derosa
What, what is just, okay, so.
dan friesen
I don't know if that means anything.
marty derosa
No, no, I mean, it might mean everything.
unidentified
Who knows?
dan friesen
Could be the key.
marty derosa
It could be.
You could be the key.
unidentified
I hope not.
marty derosa
Uh, so you wouldn't stay at this hotel?
unidentified
No.
Would you?
Oh, fuck.
marty derosa
I think I would be so in my head about it.
I mean, if it was you and I, maybe?
Oh, fear fucking A.
dan friesen
We end up going up to the roof and stuff.
unidentified
Oh, fuck.
marty derosa
That, now see, that, now we're getting into like.
dan friesen
With those like cameras.
Green, green.
marty derosa
Those reverse GoPros.
Yeah, yeah.
dan friesen
Both of us start crying.
marty derosa
I'm not into this.
dan friesen
Marty, you've got to go sit on top of the water tank for five minutes.
marty derosa
Oh, see, that's, I'm not into just touch the water tank.
dan friesen
I would never, yeah.
marty derosa
No, there's stuff like that that I'm not, I don't find, uh, not a pleasure, but I don't, I don't, I'm not that guy.
dan friesen
I'm glad that neither of us find like that to be like a fun way to spend time.
No, And that we don't think each other are cowards.
marty derosa
I feel like, no.
I, would like to think it's more respect for the dead.
dan friesen
That's the diplomatic way to do it.
marty derosa
That is the diplomatic way to do it, but also I ain't fucking with them spirits.
unidentified
No.
dan friesen
I will own the Ouija boards.
marty derosa
So, that said, yeah, no, I'm not into that, not doing that.
What's one thing you read that was just like, come on, guys, that's not possible?
dan friesen
I have two things that are interesting theories.
marty derosa
Let's go down that road.
Let's put our jackets back on and our fedoras.
This is what I love.
I don't know if this is like a trope as far as going undercover in movies.
I just saw the Captain America Civil War.
dan friesen
Yeah, yeah.
marty derosa
And both Captain America And his young black friend, I don't know his name, I'm so sorry.
But, uh, he's the winged, I don't know.
unidentified
I don't know.
marty derosa
Black, black winged.
dan friesen
I don't know comic books.
marty derosa
Anyway, the Falcon, Black Falcon, or just the Falcon, I'm sorry, I put black in front of it.
Black Panther.
But anyway, they were both in a foreign country and they were supposed to be hiding because they were kind of wanted men now.
And they both had, this is so funny, it was like the central casting, hey, I'm trying to lay low in a foreign country.
The leather jacket, aviator glasses, and a baseball hat pulled out, it's like, Guys, you could not look more like fucking people who don't want to be seen.
dan friesen
If I saw that in public, I would like, I'd have to tell someone.
marty derosa
And they're talking into their wrists, the inside of their wrists, like where their veins are, and they're like, pshh, nah, yeah, so we're over here.
dan friesen
I would call the cops if I wasn't afraid that that was a cop.
marty derosa
Right, exactly.
dan friesen
Like, that's probably that's po-po.
That's a snitch.
marty derosa
Alright, so let's go, let's go, I wanna go to a real salacious place.
dan friesen
One theory that people have is that they're trying to make sense of why the fuck she was at that hotel to begin with.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
Because she is a young lady from Canada who could have Conceivably stayed anywhere else.
Uh, it's not like the Hotel Cecil.
It's not expensive.
It's a pretty cheap, uh, place, but it's not as cheap as like a Motel 6 or something like that.
unidentified
Right.
dan friesen
There's a lot of places she could have stayed.
The idea that she stayed there leads a lot of people to believe that she was rendezvousing with somebody.
marty derosa
Okay, there was a reason why she was going there.
dan friesen
That there was a man that she may have met on the internet that she was meeting there.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
And some people have made the connection that there was a guy who was Like a gothie musician, uh, slash performance artist who was staying at the Hotel Seasaw at some point.
marty derosa
That I get.
You know what I mean?
You're an aspiring goth musician slash performer.
Where are you going to stay in LA?
dan friesen
He had taken a bunch of pictures of himself with like guns at the hotel and stuff like that.
marty derosa
That's probably so cool.
I bet he has abs.
dan friesen
You'll get there soon.
marty derosa
I bet he looks like that guy we walked by the other day.
Remember we walked by that guy and I go, look at this guy?
And he had like a little belly shirt.
Yeah, and you're like, he can definitely, he's definitely pulling that look off.
That's who I bet it was, Dan.
He's following us.
Okay.
dan friesen
Could be.
unidentified
Shit.
dan friesen
Uhm, so the, the, there are people who believe that he may know more than, uh, cause he had also posted like, uh, hey, on my next album there will be clues about this, this murder.
Piece of shit.
But it also comes off as like someone who just wants attention.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
So it's hard to say, there's some people who believe he knows or was involved.
I have no idea.
marty derosa
I, I just watched Turbulence 3.
Which is an all-time bad movie.
Uh, Turbulence was like not a bad, I don't think.
dan friesen
Which one was Turbulence?
marty derosa
It was like an airplane movie.
dan friesen
I got that much.
marty derosa
I don't know why, I don't know.
dan friesen
Who was in it?
marty derosa
I don't even remember, but Turbulence 3, 2 or 3, was, uh, there was like a Marilyn Manson type character.
unidentified
Okay.
marty derosa
And they were gonna film a concert in the air.
dan friesen
Was it a made-for-TV movie?
marty derosa
No, I think it was, it might have been a made-for-Showtime movie.
dan friesen
Okay, okay.
It's not TV, it's Showtime.
marty derosa
It's Showtime.
But anyway, alright, sorry.
dan friesen
Uh, so that's one, uh, theory that I think, uh, is interesting.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
And it would explain why she's there.
Because that to me also still doesn't make sense.
marty derosa
Absolutely.
It's like, okay, why, yeaah, I mean I get a girl from Canada is like, I'm gonna go to Los Angeles.
I get that.
I get that, I get that.
But of all the places to go.
dan friesen
It doesn't seem like that would be the first thing on Google.
marty derosa
And there was nothing, nothing that I could tell about her background where it was like, I'm into serial killers.
Like, I'm gonna stay at the Black Dahlia Hotel.
I'm gonna stay at the Night Stalker Hotel.
There didn't seem to be anything like that.
She wasn't a, you know, a dark.
dan friesen
Nothing I found indicated that either.
marty derosa
A suicide girl, if you will.
unidentified
No.
marty derosa
There wasn't anything like that.
dan friesen
She did have mental illness, but apparently all of her blogs were mostly dedicated to like fashion and stuff like that.
So those are the sort of the world that she's interested in, and not so much this, bleh, let's celebrate.
marty derosa
Yeah.
dan friesen
Death.
marty derosa
I get it.
dan friesen
Death cults.
marty derosa
I get it.
dan friesen
So that's one.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
Now the other one, you're gonna dig this one.
unidentified
Ah, fuck yeah.
dan friesen
You're gonna love this one.
marty derosa
Give it to me.
dan friesen
So, sometime, shortly before she died, uh, not like immediately before, but she had, she had tweeted out an article about cloaking technology.
marty derosa
Oh fuck, I heard, oh yes, please, I read about this as well.
unidentified
Uh huh.
dan friesen
And that's also very out of, Sink with a lot of the stuff that she was interested in in terms of her internet persona.
marty derosa
It's off brand as we would say.
unidentified
Yeah, yeah.
dan friesen
I don't think we were saying that in 2013, but now we are.
marty derosa
But now we are.
Cloaking technology.
dan friesen
So there are some people who believe that she may have accidentally learned more than she should have known about cloaking technology.
And one of the reasons people think this is for a while, I don't believe this is still the case, but for a while, if you googled the address of the Hotel Cecil, there would come up in Google Maps A business that was located inside the same building called Invisible Light Agency.
unidentified
Oh my god.
dan friesen
Which is theoretically on, uh, uh, you know, on the surface was a, um, uh, like movie special effects type of interest.
unidentified
ILA.
dan friesen
Which I don't know why they're involved, like located at this creepy hotel.
But a lot of people have speculated that they were actually some sort of dark ops situation and they're working on cloaking technology, which is not as science fiction as people think.
marty derosa
No, and that's one of those things that Starts in a movie that is becoming reality.
unidentified
And?
marty derosa
I think our government?
Shit, I bet the Nazis were fucking working on that.
dan friesen
Undoubtedly.
You would be so unstoppable with cloaking technology.
marty derosa
Essentially it's saying you put an out, you put something over you and you're invisible.
unidentified
Yep.
Yep.
dan friesen
Cause it like reflects light and has some sort of readers on the back and stuff like that.
Like I don't, from what everything you can find publicly, it's not perfect technology yet, but it's that same thing that we always run into that technology's usually a little more ahead than we think.
unidentified
Of course.
dan friesen
So maybe it is better than we think, maybe she accidentally stumbled into something, and now this introduces the scariest thought of all.
The time that's cut out of that video could have indicated that there was someone in a cloaking device fucking with her in that elevator.
So maybe she was lured or scared to the roof by someone in an invisibility cloak or something like that, and that's why, you know, it's not really picked up, nobody saw anything.
The most likely thing, it's certainly a little sci-fi.
unidentified
Of course.
dan friesen
But man, it's right where, it's right where we live in terms of our interests.
Cloaking Devices on Roof 00:14:35
marty derosa
That thing of stumbling upon something.
unidentified
Mm-hmm.
marty derosa
And then, uh, you know, an evil secret society sending out somebody to take care of business.
unidentified
Mm-hmm.
marty derosa
I mean, but then you go to this, well if that's the case, why the fuck didn't they get that tape?
dan friesen
Well they didn't need to get all of the tape.
marty derosa
Yeah, I guess.
To make her look like just a, Yeah, okay, I get it.
dan friesen
The parts, the parts that, uh, listen, and I'm just saying this if that's the case.
marty derosa
Of course, of course, of course.
Because I was thinking, like, just get rid of it, but then you're like, well, then you got word, then it's the word the tape go and all this stuff.
So it's easier for them to use their invisibility cloak, make her look like a crazy person who somehow makes her way to the top floor of this hotel, somehow gets past this door who she's not supposed to get past without setting off alarms or just get past and then somehow ends up in a water tank.
unidentified
Yep.
dan friesen
Yeah, I know, it's kind of weird.
I still think after we've analyzed all of this that, and I'm sure there's other thoughts and if we missed anything please feel free to let us know and all that, but like, I still think the most reasonable explanation is some sort of mental breakdown.
marty derosa
I think that's where I'm leaning towards.
dan friesen
All this stuff is really fun to think about and explore.
And if it is true, that's really scary shit.
marty derosa
I mean, it's one of those things where.
dan friesen
There's no demon possession argument that makes sense to me or anything like that.
marty derosa
But there's those things where you're just like, is this just a coincidence?
Really, that tuberculosis stuff's a coincidence?
That's like.
I mean, that could be just fuel to the fire, and we're just like, okay, this really doesn't happen, but you guys are adding all this extra stuff in there.
Uhm, but then there's those things of like, the police being like, well, we don't know, but we know it's not, but whatever.
Like, we're not saying anyone murdered, but we're not else, we're also saying we don't know what the fuck happened.
dan friesen
Yeah, yeah.
marty derosa
I'd love to think there's still some cop who's like, I'm gonna get to the bottom of this.
dan friesen
I'm still looking, this, I'm still, I mean, that's- Some LA confidential type.
marty derosa
That's what I'm hoping, like, you know, I mean, but, you know, there's still the black dolly thing they haven't solved.
dan friesen
Like, there's just- Unsolved murders are very, very common.
marty derosa
I know, I know, I know.
The first 48, you know, they don't solve it right away.
It's probably never going to get solved.
dan friesen
And, and we're not even necessarily saying that this is a murder.
unidentified
No.
dan friesen
This could just be a tragedy.
The one thing that I found the most fun in my research was a very long post on Reddit, uh, from a guy who was talking about how all of this is a distraction from realizing that there is a massive synchronicity at play here.
And all of this is just basically the universe glitching in a really serious way.
And then when we talk about the murder or the idea of demon possession or some sort of black ops cloaking shit, it's all our minds trying to make rational sense of the reality that we live within this holographic universe.
marty derosa
The Matrix.
dan friesen
Yeah, where the reason that her name is a TB test flipped is because of some glitch in the coding.
marty derosa
Oh man, I love that.
dan friesen
And that's what happened.
And that idea sets us into a place where reality doesn't exist anymore.
unidentified
Oh no.
dan friesen
And even the scariest shit about CIA skunk works Well, I mean, someone could say that going back to JFK, like, we don't want to think that some guy could just get up on a, get up in a building and shoot our president.
marty derosa
It's too, maybe it makes us feel a little too vulnerable.
dan friesen
It is very humbling and insecure.
marty derosa
So we have to think, or I mean the same thing for 9-11.
dan friesen
Could, could a ragtag group of dudes just I feel like ragtag has almost too much of a positive content, right?
Could this group of evil scrappy youngsters.
marty derosa
Evil doers.
Could this little, our gang of bad people but I mean, that's the thing too.
It's like, could these guys have pulled that off?
And then there might be a thing where people like you and I maybe, just think, can't be that easy.
There's gotta be more to it.
And we, as a community of conspiracy enthusiasts yeah.
Uh, we like getting scared by this.
This is not unlike some people who like to watch horror movies.
dan friesen
Yeah.
marty derosa
This is our horror movie.
dan friesen
We like to go on YouTube.
marty derosa
Yeah, we like to go on YouTube and we like to, you know, watch these things where bad people and maybe it makes us feel more safe.
I'm sure there's.
dan friesen
Because our lives are so distant.
unidentified
Right.
dan friesen
And the only thing that makes me uncomfortable about that is kind of like it takes away from the fact that the one fact that we do know is that an innocent woman died.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
And that is sad.
unidentified
Right.
dan friesen
To get titillation and entertainment out of it is a little bit dicey, but at the same time, It's not really, as long as we still recognize the tragedy of it.
marty derosa
Right, and that's where, that's the real, like, creepy part of this goes.
Cause when you are just doing these weird, like, slender man, like, why is this guy in the background of these pictures, or this and that?
Or even, you know, the Black Dahlia thing where it's so long ago, it's easy to disassociate.
unidentified
Sure.
marty derosa
But when you watch this, and this is a young woman who died very recently, and it's also, you kind of want to think, like, man, how is this still happening?
You know, and you, and, and, and this is an instance of, You know, when security cameras and all that stuff kind of fail us and we're just like, why is like, and I, I just.
dan friesen
Why don't we have more information?
marty derosa
Why don't we have more information?
I get sometimes very frustrated, uh, where I just still can't believe that, you know, when, when people are dying, they're not just like on their deathbed going, by the way, you should know, you should know that I did this or, you know what I mean?
dan friesen
Well, here's a thought about that.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
Maybe with all this classified information that people, you know, like when you're in the inner circles, maybe you realize maybe there's occult or spiritual information that you learn too.
That you don't really die, or something like that.
So people don't make deathbed confessions because they know there's something on the other side.
marty derosa
Well, that's something you said to me a long time ago.
dan friesen
Man, I hope I didn't.
marty derosa
No, no, no, not that, not that.
unidentified
Okay.
marty derosa
But one of the things that you said, and I always do think about this, is when talking about groups like the Illuminati or whatever, you were like, maybe they do know something.
dan friesen
It's possible.
marty derosa
Do you remember saying this to me?
dan friesen
Well, I mean, I don't remember exactly what I said, but I do resonate with that thought a lot.
marty derosa
Of just this idea of You know, and there's always that whole, like, we only use 10% of our brain.
unidentified
Sure.
marty derosa
But there is this, this, maybe there is this idea of maybe they do know something.
dan friesen
Well, think about it like this.
This is the way I would put it, in like a really simplistic version.
Like, you didn't know exactly how good working out would make you feel until you started doing it.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
And now you know something that you had no idea about the other before.
unidentified
Right.
marty derosa
And I, and I had heard about it, but I never really did believe it.
dan friesen
You didn't believe it.
marty derosa
I didn't give it any credence.
dan friesen
You didn't know all the feelings.
You just thought like, oh, my body will look better.
I'll feel better about myself.
But there's, There's experiential things you can only really learn by doing it.
unidentified
Yes.
dan friesen
In the same way that I didn't understand how meditation would make me feel before I did it.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
The weird brain states you can trick yourself into be- Trick isn't the right word, but like, you can kick yourself into within 15 minutes of sitting down and focusing.
Like those sorts of things.
It makes sense to me that maybe, maybe, there are other things like that that are a little spookier.
unidentified
Yeah.
Maybe.
dan friesen
And that's, that's kind of where that thought comes from.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
If you want to put it rationally.
marty derosa
I, I feel like with this situation, I am, I am leaning towards, uh, something to do with mental illness.
I, I have a feeling.
dan friesen
Well, that's, that's on brand for you too.
unidentified
Yeah.
marty derosa
I mean, look, I've moved across country.
I've made trips, you know, and I look back now and I go, whoa, what was I even thinking?
I met girls and I've traveled.
Like, I mean, you know, I've met girls in bars who lived in San Francisco and I went and visited them.
unidentified
Sure.
marty derosa
Months later.
dan friesen
It's bizarre.
marty derosa
It's very bizarre.
dan friesen
But you could have ended up dead in a hotel or something when you went on a trip to visit them.
marty derosa
Sure.
dan friesen
And we would all be as confused.
unidentified
Sure.
dan friesen
People would be like, why the fuck did Marty go across the country?
marty derosa
But I mean, I think about this too sometimes.
unidentified
Indeed.
marty derosa
I know, bully, bully.
But I, I mean, I think about this too, where like, look, I have a, my, my brain sometimes wanders and all this stuff.
And there are times where I meet a woman in a bar, and I'll bring her home, and I'll be like, no one knows you're here.
unidentified
Uh huh.
marty derosa
That's, I mean, I'm, I'm not, that sounds creepy.
No, But there is that.
dan friesen
I know what you, I know what you mean.
unidentified
Right.
dan friesen
Or, or, I'll be it's like that, uh, it's like Joe Fernandez has a joke about picking up two women from the street.
And I hate to ruin one of his jokes, but the point is very salient.
Uh, he, he and a friend, two dudes, just pick up two girls Walking on the street and they get in his car.
And his joke is, wow, we should kill you on principle.
marty derosa
Absolutely.
dan friesen
And it's that idea of like, oh, what we're doing is innocent.
Like, we're just meeting up and you guys want to hang out with us, but.
marty derosa
In the wrong hands.
unidentified
Right.
dan friesen
It's very scary.
marty derosa
Yes.
dan friesen
Anytime anyone's alone with someone else, it could be scary.
marty derosa
And, and you, you especially live in this area where there's lots of people walking around very drunk late at night.
unidentified
It's true.
marty derosa
Uh, you can very, if, if you're in the room, Yeah, sometimes you falling or whatever, hurting yourself.
But, I mean, there are those times where I will see a woman walking home and just think like, if I was a bad dude, oh man, for sure, that's a target.
dan friesen
I sometimes see people like that and I'm like, I want to help, but I know that I can't help.
marty derosa
I walk a little bit behind them.
dan friesen
I have done that before as well.
marty derosa
I don't try to, I don't approach them.
I just kind of, that's me being like.
dan friesen
Keep a pace, kind of.
unidentified
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
marty derosa
And it's me just kind of being like.
dan friesen
So you can discern the situation.
unidentified
Yes.
marty derosa
Cause I know women who are like, I kind of walk by guys at times if I'm feeling, you know what I mean?
dan friesen
I've heard that.
marty derosa
So there's that, there's this idea of it's like, hey, you know what sucks about modern life?
Yeah.
dan friesen
The idea of asking someone if they need help is what a predator would do.
marty derosa
Exactly.
dan friesen
That's fucking crazy.
marty derosa
One time a woman was changing her tire at a flat and me and my buddies pulled over and she's like, uh, thank you guys so much, but please, please, please just get in your car and go.
dan friesen
Like, leave me alone.
marty derosa
I've got a tow truck coming, just please, like, I'm, no offense to you guys, just leave me alone.
dan friesen
And we were like, that's the safest thing to do.
unidentified
Absolutely.
marty derosa
So, and there, there is just this idea of, and then when you brought up this, I mean, it just all is just like, Like, fuck yeah, like this goth guy who's like, she maybe came to see him.
Because I mean, at the end of the day, do we not, we don't know why she was there.
unidentified
No.
marty derosa
Or how, if it was just dumb fucking luck, she picked this fucking place.
unidentified
But.
dan friesen
It's like we know why she's in Los Angeles, but we don't know why she's at the specific hotel.
marty derosa
Right, but there are times where, you know, whenever anyone moves to Chicago, they just move to Wrigleyville and they're like, I don't know, just, that's where I moved.
dan friesen
That's what happened to me, basically, with my neighborhood.
Complete accident.
marty derosa
Sometimes it's just these things and there are these happy, Well, that's a mild coincidence.
dan friesen
I mean, compared to the major ones we're dealing with.
marty derosa
That's what I'm talking about.
unidentified
Yeah.
marty derosa
When you start getting into those things.
dan friesen
Probably means the world is a hologram.
marty derosa
I'm starting to think that might be the case.
Just a little glitch in the matrix.
dan friesen
There are those who say that.
Well, Marty, reality is she was a young lady who had been suffering with mental illness and she had a A little bit of a psychotic break when she went off her medication and somehow found her way onto the top and circumstances we'll never really know.
Just got herself into the tank and closed the door herself.
unidentified
Man.
marty derosa
If this was a video.
Damn it, you missed your cue!
unidentified
What?
marty derosa
Oh, that's what they want you to think.
dan friesen
Well, I was gonna say, I was gonna say to be fair, we didn't talk about remembering our old cues.
marty derosa
But also, I was kind of thinking if this was a show, we were on TV, I would do like the red stamp of like the Solved.
Like, I, I do think that's, I think that's what it is.
dan friesen
But I don't think we can ever say it's solved.
marty derosa
You can never say it's solved.
But we can say that- There's only one person who truly knows what happened.
dan friesen
And that's the Lord Jesus Christ.
marty derosa
No, Daniel.
It's this young lady.
dan friesen
Maybe she doesn't even know though, you know?
I mean, if she was drugged or drunk or something like that, even if you could talk to her from behind the wall of sleep, so to speak, you wouldn't be, I don't know if she would even be able to tell you what happened.
marty derosa
Or maybe she doesn't want us to know what happened.
dan friesen
That's what you want to think.
No, I don't know.
I, yeah, I mean, who knows?
unidentified
Who knows?
dan friesen
I think with the preponderance of evidence though, you can say that it's like, that's the most likely explanation, but boy, are there some weird fucking things.
marty derosa
There really are, and it's one of those things where if you wanted to just let your mind run wild, I am so excited if, if, excited, I don't know if that's the right word, but if, if you're listening to this, and you haven't seen this video yet.
dan friesen
And you haven't turned off the podcast yet.
marty derosa
And you haven't turned this podcast off.
Just really make a night of it.
You know what I mean?
unidentified
Maybe.
dan friesen
There's a lot of resources.
marty derosa
Maybe have a little wine.
Maybe have a little, a little smoke.
dan friesen
Trying to turn it into like a romantic evening on YouTube.
marty derosa
I want you to sit in front of that computer.
I want you to watch it.
I want you to tweet it, Dan and I.
And I want, I want you to let us know what you thought.
dan friesen
Got any theories?
Let us know.
marty derosa
Hashtag TTTYTTYTYTYTY.
dan friesen
TWTWYTT.
marty derosa
That's it.
And I want you guys to let us know what you think.
Uh, because man, oh man, this, there's times where I'm just like, clearly, Dan, you're right.
It's a woman off her medication.
Sorry to say she got in a place she shouldn't have been in.
I love that idea of a guy having a cigarette up top and she's like, oh shit, I gotta hide.
dan friesen
I saw you like almost touching your chest whenever I was talking about the invisibility cloak.
Oh, it was like, I could almost see tingles on your head.
marty derosa
I mean, there are certain things and that's when I'm reading it and I'm thinking, is there someone in my room?
unidentified
Oh, man.
dan friesen
That's the scariest thought in the world.
I mean, because there's so many just natural noises in apartments and stuff like that.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
Could be the walls, or could be an invisible man.
Well, could be H.G. Wells.
unidentified
Jesus.
dan friesen
Anyway, people can tweet their theories to you at Marty DeRosa.
marty derosa
And they can tweet them to you at Freezing Point.
dan friesen
That is how you can get at us.
Also, if you have any suggestions for future episodes that you want us to take on, we've kind of decided we're going to do this maybe once a month, sporadically.
marty derosa
When it, when the time feels right.
dan friesen
It may be about once a month, but we're not putting any solid lines on it.
Creepy Ideas and Space Nazis 00:05:19
marty derosa
Not at all.
And let, let people know what we've done so far.
We've done JFK.
unidentified
Yep.
marty derosa
We've done Nazis on the Moon.
dan friesen
Yep.
And we did MK Ultra.
marty derosa
MK Ultra.
dan friesen
That's a lost episode.
I don't even have the audio of that one.
marty derosa
Fucking A.
That makes me, oh my god, I'm so scared right now.
dan friesen
It's not, it's not on my hard drive, like my external hard drive.
I just have the JFK and the Nazis in space one.
marty derosa
I'd like to think when you're like, oh here it is, and you play it, and it's just somewhere over a rainbow.
unidentified
I don't know.
marty derosa
I mean, maybe we should tackle that one more time.
dan friesen
Eh, we could.
Possibly.
marty derosa
I just hope there's not another glitch in the Matrix.
dan friesen
You don't get another car to explode.
marty derosa
Jesus Christ.
dan friesen
City bus just explodes while you're on it.
unidentified
Oh fuck.
dan friesen
I, uh, also we did Atlantis with Dries.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
So, uh, those are the topics we've covered already.
marty derosa
So if there's another one that you guys want us to crack open.
dan friesen
Oh, and werewolves.
unidentified
I think.
marty derosa
Who did werewolves?
dan friesen
Me and Dries did werewolves.
marty derosa
Okay.
Magnets.
Let's do those.
unidentified
Oh, I think.
marty derosa
How do they work?
Uh, but I do, I do, I enjoy this.
I think, I think, I think we handle it with respect.
dan friesen
And a plum.
marty derosa
Pardon?
dan friesen
The word, a plum.
marty derosa
What does that mean?
dan friesen
Uh, dignity.
marty derosa
Yeah, I think we do.
I think we handle it with respect and a plum.
And I'm gonna use that word a lot now.
dan friesen
It's good to learn some of my Dan Friesen vocabulary.
marty derosa
Uh, as you famously have taught me numerous words.
dan friesen
You've said that three times on this episode, I haven't said it once.
marty derosa
Titular, uh.
unidentified
WANT.
WANT.
marty derosa
No, this has been a fun one.
dan friesen
Yeah, it's been great.
Also, if you are gonna suggest topics to us, like I said, I have no interest in talking about crisis actors.
I don't wanna talk about Sandy Hook.
I don't want to talk about 9-11.
Like these topics aren't fun.
unidentified
Okay.
dan friesen
And granted, the death of a young woman isn't necessarily fun either.
I know, but it's- But those topics to me are like 9-11's too big.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
Sandy Hook, uh, truthers I think are fucking wackos.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
Well, cause you know what, and this is, this shows, I don't, I don't want this show to ever be like me being like, fuck all of you.
marty derosa
Right, right.
You don't have an Alex Jones moment.
dan friesen
No, no.
marty derosa
What, what I was.
dan friesen
But the reverse.
marty derosa
When, when, uh, there's a little bit with Bernie and Hillary where they're mentioning like Sandy Hook and stuff, and I'm just kinda like, what, is no one on MSMEC gonna talk about crisis actors and how this might not have even happened?
I'm like, oh my god, I'm so- Look at their earlobes.
Oh my god, I'm so far down the wormhole.
Like, Jesus Christ, they're, they've met Obama.
These little girls have met Obama.
unidentified
What am I doing?
marty derosa
You know what I mean?
It's like, what am I doing?
dan friesen
What you need to do if you ever get too deep on that rabbit hole is just look for Uh, videos that make the contrary argument.
And you'll find, like, the ones that debunk those arguments, you'll find that those are always more sensible.
marty derosa
I know.
They always- I know.
It's- All your sexy ideas just get like, here's what's- here's why that's not a thing, and here's why that's not a thing, and here's why that's not a thing.
dan friesen
And here's where those videos that are proposing these conspiracy theories are literally just liars.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
It's not even misunderstanding a piece of information, they're just lying.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
So.
marty derosa
They're a certain form of internet troll.
unidentified
Yeah.
dan friesen
And I don't want any part of that.
But anything else we'll talk about?
marty derosa
I mean, there's gotta be some fun ones out there.
unidentified
Sure.
marty derosa
Uhm, and, and I, I am more than happy to.
dan friesen
We'll talk about the Eye of Horus.
Egyptian mythology.
And a springing into pop culture.
marty derosa
Uh, we, I mean, with this whole, uh, X-Men apocalypse coming up, there's definitely gonna be some, uh, some illusions.
dan friesen
Sure.
marty derosa
Allusions.
dan friesen
Alluding.
marty derosa
Alluding to some, uh, some, some things like that.
dan friesen
Yeah, I would assume so.
Anyway, this has been fun.
I'm glad we're doing this again, man.
marty derosa
Hey, man.
I'm, I'm glad, uh, I'm glad we're doing this during the day.
I don't feel weird walking home from this.
dan friesen
I, uh.
marty derosa
I'm taking an elevator tonight at the House of Blues, a very spooky place.
dan friesen
Uh oh.
marty derosa
So, luckily there's only four floors.
dan friesen
You should make it.
unidentified
Oh shit.
dan friesen
Uh, if, uh, what the fuck?
marty derosa
Could, oh man.
dan friesen
I had a thought.
This would have been so.
marty derosa
I just had the creepiest idea.
dan friesen
What was that?
marty derosa
Uh, like if, if we had the technology to- To podcast in an elevator?
unidentified
No.
marty derosa
Oh man, I can't even believe I thought of this.
This is so creepy.
unidentified
Oh no.
marty derosa
Uhm, to do like green screen technology, uh, and then make it black and white and put me and you in the elevator with her.
unidentified
No.
dan friesen
Oh, that's so bad.
unidentified
Why would I even think of that?
dan friesen
Yeah.
marty derosa
And then Dries under a cloak.
unidentified
Oh my god.
marty derosa
What am I doing?
dan friesen
I think it's a fun mental image, but I want to put no effort into it.
marty derosa
Cause here's what I do.
When I, when I'm feeling uncomfortable, I go to the silly.
And that was a silly thought in my brain.
unidentified
Yeah.
marty derosa
So I kind of thank my brain for that, but I also don't like that I thought of that.
unidentified
I too think of that.
marty derosa
And I feel like, and I feel like a dick now for jumping in and out of the elevator when I came here.
dan friesen
Oh, you're fine.
marty derosa
I don't know.
dan friesen
It probably won't have any consequences.
marty derosa
That's what they want you to think.
dan friesen
There you go.
All right, guys.
Uh, thank you all so much for listening.
Uh, thanks for joining us in the brain battle.
marty derosa
I love that too, that's great.
dan friesen
Marty, it's been great, thanks for coming.
unidentified
My pleasure.
dan friesen
Uh, we will catch you next time right here in Boomtown, but until then, I have been Boglejub, the White Mystery.
Now please go out there and do your job, which of course is loving somebody.
unidentified
That's one thing.
marty derosa
That is what they want you to think.
They want to take your eyes off the real things.
They want you to think, no, that can't be because that's what they want you to think.
Mind control, Nazis in space, who killed JFK, I don't know.
It's a lot of things that our human brains probably can't handle, but that's what they want you to think.
