Holiness Movement Begun
00:04:29
|
|
| And you know, the reason that the church is still alive today in the world is because God's people have opened up to the Holy Spirit. | |
| How vital is the Holy Spirit for revival? | |
| You cannot make it without it. | |
| That's right. | |
| You cannot make it without it. | |
| You know, there's a scripture in Romans. | |
| Let me read this. | |
| You need to know this scripture as much as you know John 3, 16. | |
| None of us can live without John 3.16. | |
| But you need this scripture just as much. | |
| I'll read into it. | |
| This is Romans 8, verse 12. | |
| Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. | |
| For if you live according to the flesh, you will die. | |
| But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. | |
| And here's what everybody should memorize, just like you memorized John 3, 16. | |
| For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. | |
| So good. | |
| Dear ones, you didn't get saved without the Holy Spirit working in your life. | |
| That's right. | |
| You didn't get saved without that. | |
| Our dear holiness people throughout the 1800s taught sanctification because they said you need a deeper work of the Holy Spirit. | |
| Their misunderstanding was that that was the baptism in the Holy Spirit. | |
| But it was not. | |
| That was a sanctifying experience by the Holy Spirit. | |
| But thankfully, at the turn of the 20th century, a Methodist preacher by the name of Charles Fox Parham of the little Bible school in Topeka, Kansas, asked his students to study the Bible and said, is there more? | |
| Because he was of the holiness movement, saved and sanctified. | |
| And they found there were manifestations when you allow the Holy Spirit to control you. | |
| And one of the manifestations was speaking in tongues. | |
| And there was healings, of course, and others. | |
| So they began to preach that if you will allow yourself to have the Holy Spirit lead you, control you, guide you, there will be manifestations. | |
| And one of those will be the speaking in tongues. | |
| And that's what began to move. | |
| And it was there that revival was born. | |
| Of course, they didn't understand it. | |
| And they discouraged Charles Parham. | |
| He gave up his vision, but then he moved to Houston, Texas, and God renewed his vision. | |
| Does that sound familiar? | |
| When you've lost, and then you start over again? | |
| Does that sound familiar? | |
| But in Houston, Texas, he started again. | |
| And there in that Bible school was a dear black brother, William Seymour. | |
| And he received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. | |
| He was a holiness preacher. | |
| And later on, he was invited to Los Angeles to preach at a holiness church. | |
| On Sunday morning, he preached the whole load, all of it, because he was excited about the Pentecostal experience. | |
| Well, that night when he came back for the service, they locked the door and said, we don't want to hear you. | |
| You're not welcome. | |
| But one of the sisters says, come to my house. | |
| We want to hear more. | |
| And a group of people gathered in their home there, and they had church. | |
| And it went on weeks. | |
| They had so many people coming. | |
| They get to praising God and shouting and dancing. | |
| And the floor fell through. | |
| But they said, we've got to get a different place. | |
| And so they looked and found an old abandoned warehouse on Azusa Street. | |
| And there on Azusa Street, they began to have church. | |
| For three and a half years, the Spirit of the Lord moved, and the Pentecostal movement was born. | |
| And out of that came the Church of God and the Assemblies of God and the Forest Square and all of the Pentecostal women. | |
| And the greatest, largest holiness movement was the Church of God in Christ. | |
| They were holiness at that time. | |
| And they embraced the baptism of the Holy Spirit. | |
| And now today, the Church of God in Christ is the largest denomination in the United States. | |
| And the Assemblies of God embraced it, and they were birthed out of that. | |
| And around the world, they're the largest Pentecostal denomination. | |
| And no matter where you go, South America, Central America, Africa, India, it doesn't matter. | |
| The greatest move of God is with people that will allow the power of the Holy Spirit to move through their life. | |

Mighty Outpouring of the Holy Spirit
00:00:35
|
|
| It's exploding and it's getting ready to explode again. | |
| It's going to come among these young people and among these seeker-friendly churches that are so hungry for God. | |
| They're there by the tens of thousands. | |
| And suddenly there's going to be a sound from heaven and it's going to fill all the house where they're sitting. | |
| And there's going to appear cloven tongues like as a fire. | |
| And you're going to see a mighty outpouring of the Holy Spirit like never before because we're living in that glorious day. | |
| Hear me, ladies and gentlemen. | |
