The United States is not energy independent and still imports significant amounts of oil from countries like Saudi Arabia.
But the reality here is that we're not energy independent per se. Alex is confusing that with our trend towards becoming a net exporter of oil, which isn't the same thing. According to foreign policy, we still imported approximately a million barrels of oil per day from Saudi Arabia in 2018. The generally agreed upon definition of energy independence is that we would be producing more energy than we consume. And during a couple months of last year, that was something that we achieved.
