Well, according to the Smithsonian magazine, quote, Hindenburg reluctantly appointed Hitler as chancellor on the advice of Franz von Poppen, a disgruntled former chancellor who believed the conservative bourgeois parties should ally with the Nazis to keep the communists out of party.
