Bukele's state of emergency in El Salvador suspended constitutional rights and led to the imprisonment of roughly 75,000 people.

Bukele launched a push against organized crime after 92 people were killed between March 24th and March 27th, 2022. He put in a state of emergency that was supposed to last 30 days, but is actually still in place now over two years later. According to Human Rights Watch, this emergency involved, quote, suspending a range of constitutional rights, including the rights of freedom of association and assembly, to privacy in communications, and to be informed of the reason for arrest. According to the New York Times, quote, Since March 2022, when Mr. Bukele declared a state of emergency that suspended basic civil liberties, security forces have locked up roughly 75,000 people. A staggering 1 in 45 adults is now in prison.
