The West Texas fertilizer plant was a frequent target for chemical theft due to the use of anhydrous ammonia in meth production.

So something that leads me to suspect human involvement was an article in Reuters where they discussed police records involving the plant that they'd looked over from the past 12 years. Apparently, the plant was a very frequent target for the theft of chemicals, since anhydrous ammonia that is in their fertilizer is also something people use to cook meth. Right. From Reuters, quote, according to a 2002 crime report, a plant manager told the police that intruders were stealing four to five gallons of anhydrous ammonia every three days.
