The Canadian Supreme Court ruled that Monsanto had a valid patent for the gene but found Schmeiser did not have to pay damages because there was no evidence of additional profit.
So they decided that Monsanto had a valid patent for the gene that made their canola herbicide resistant, but they also found that Schmeiser didn't have to pay them anything because there was no evidence that he made additional profit by using the seeds that contained the patented gene. So in the end, the court kind of ruled against him on all the issues, but he was personally fine.
