The Christians Who Want to Rule the World -with André Gagné
Dominionists are shaping your life: from your kid's sex-ed program, to local gun laws, and national elections. They see themselves as called to rule the world as proxies for God. Dominionists strategize as to how to infiltrate and control every aspect of human life--government, economics, culture, media, education, and so on. They are not fringe. They are operating in local, state, and national governments.

Axis Mundy Today's show is brought to you by the Myths of Love YouTube channel.
What is the Myths of Love YouTube channel?
Well, it's a new channel by me, Bradley Onishi, and it explores the wondrous, the tragic, the inspirational, and the grotesque when it comes to the history of love.
And so I have a video on the religious origins of the soulmate myth.
I have one on the polyamorous relationship between the existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir.
Probably of special interest to listeners of this show, I have one on the history of Jesus' vagina.
You might be wondering, uh, excuse me?
And you'll just have to go over to YouTube, type in Bradley Onishi, Myths of Love, to check out what is in store for you there.
Hello, welcome to Straight White American Jesus.
My name is Brad Onishi, and I am Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Skidmore College, and we're really thrilled that you will join us today.
We have a guest who's actually a repeat guest.
You are actually our only second person who's been on more than once, and that is Professor Andre Gagné.
Professor Gagné is a tenured professor in the Department of Theological Studies at Concordia University in Montreal.
And for those of us, I said this last time he was on, but I want to say it again just before I turn it over to him and welcome him, is for those of us who study the religious right and evangelicals and ex-evangelicals and all of these kinds of related movements, you know, there's so many folks who are just so brilliant and so knowledgeable.
And some of those folks are very generalist in their knowledge.
So we had Robert Jones on our show from PRRI.
And, you know, Robert really just knows a lot about a lot of things, and he's trying to keep his pulse on stuff that's happening all over the world.
You know, I can think of many others like him who do that.
Professor Gagné knows a lot about a lot of stuff, but André, you know, the thing I, when I think about you, I think of somebody who every day when I turn to your Twitter feed and every day when I turn to Your content on YouTube and other places, you are just in the trenches every day on what's happening with evangelicals, and more specifically, what's happening with certain sort of strands of evangelicalism, and we want to talk about one of those today, Dominionism.
So that's just a long-winded way of saying thanks for being here, Andre, and thanks for joining us one more time on Straight White American.
Listen, Brad, it's really an honor, especially an honor to be the second time, first time, second guest.
Thank you so much.
I really enjoy your podcast.
You guys are doing fantastic work and I just appreciate being able to discuss with you about our common interests.
Well, the thing I want to talk about today is something that I think we hear a lot about in the news or, you know, folks who might be following podcasts like ours and maybe some other places.
You hear this word Christian Dominionism coming up, and sometimes it's referred to as Christian Reconstructionism, sometimes it's referred to under other names, sometimes people lump together Christian Nationalism and Christian Dominionism.
What I want to do today was just provide our audience with a kind of primer on what is Dominionism, because it pops up a lot.
A lot of folks might have watched Jeff Charlotte's The Family or read the books, but Jeff Charlotte's The Family on Netflix just aired, so there's a book and a Netflix series where he really shows what one might call a kind of Dominionist or Reconstructionist approach to Christianity, where You have people in Washington, D.C.
essentially trying to affect all of the policies and workings of the American government.
We see this pop up in other places.
So, all that to say, Andre, can you just give us a couple minutes here on, you know, what is Christian Dominionism?
I mean, can you give us a succinct definition of what that is?
Yes, yes.
Great question.
We do hear about this a lot on Twitter and everywhere, you know, and it's applied to everything and nothing.
So it can get very confusing.
But I think that, like, the best definition I came across concerning Dominionism is the one provided by Fred Clarkson, who is a research associate at the Research Political Associates.
He actually has been studying The Christian Right for over 20-30 years.
He's been prolific on this.
And essentially, Dominionism, how it should be understood is it's the theocratic idea that regardless of the theological view, means, or timetable, Christians are called by God to exercise dominion over every aspect of society by taking control of political and cultural institutions.
