TECH LIBERATION 101: HOW TO SET UP THE LATEST (and greatest) BITCOIN PODCAST TECHNOLOGY!
| Copy link to current segment

Time Text
We are online. All right.
Hey, everybody. This is Stefan Molyneux.
I'm here with our good friend, Jared.
And Jared and I, and by Jared and I, I mean mostly Jared, have been working on this really, really cool stuff.
We're not affiliated. We don't get any affiliate links, no business relationship, nothing like that.
But these guys are just doing some amazing, amazing stuff.
And I really wanted to share it with you.
So this is a tech demo now for those of you who know some of my backstory.
I did these for years and years and years.
It was with great pain and a sense of masculine humiliation that I turned the tech reins over to Jared because he's good at it and I'm not.
So Jared, thanks a lot for taking the time today.
You may, of course, remember Jared from Tezos and our...
Live streams for investment and crypto stuff.
Jared, thanks, Emil. My absolute pleasure, Steph.
Thank you so much for having me. All right.
So, the basic idea behind this is a community, a chat system, and a podcast listening environment wherein you can friction-free stream Satoshis to We're good to go.
But if you like a podcaster, obviously, choose me if you can.
But if you like a podcaster, they'll probably either be on the system already or be on it closely.
You can just throw a couple of Satoshis into the system.
And then as you listen, Satoshis are streamed to the podcaster.
And you can, of course, have a chat room.
I've set one up already. We'll talk about that.
A chat room which is troll-resistant.
It's always kind of important. I mean, it's a shame that I had to turn the comments off on BitChute.
So we want some troll-resistant stuff.
So there's a small fee to enter and then a tiny, tiny, like fractions of a penny fee to post.
And you, I think, get some of that back if your post stays up.
So it's really cool stuff.
The technology is fantastic.
The people behind it, I think, are just absolutely brilliant.
And so we're going to go through.
And I would suggest, you know, grab a phone.
We're going to go through...
This is Android, right?
We're going to go through Android, which is an APK, and they already have it in the store on iOS, in the App Store.
So my suggestion is, you know, grab a phone.
If you're watching this live, grab a phone.
If you're watching this later, appreciate the two.
Grab a phone. Walk through this.
We're going to tell you how to do it.
And also, we're going to include a document that Jared put together.
We've got a link in the show notes below, which can step you through it if you want to do this offline.
So, Jared, that's my very brief intro.
I'm sure you have more to say if you wanted to chime in.
Everybody, thank you so much for being here.
What we're going to be setting up today is Sphinx Chat and the Breeze.
Breeze is an app that will allow you to send and receive to Satoshis, so you can actually receive Bitcoin and it'll still get on the Lightning Network.
And it's pretty convenient.
Now, I know I've been kind of a critic of Lightning and stuff like that.
This is really neat stuff.
It is beta. It works pretty good.
But there is...
You might have some hang-ups here and there.
But in my experience, if you keep trying with things, it works out.
And, of course, these guys are constantly updating everything and keeping up with it.
So that's just been wonderful.
I'm not often jealous of tech gods, but I'm afraid this one has to be by the short and curlies.
Okay, so there's sort of two major apps that we need to look at.
Oh, not major apps. It sounds a bit more dramatic than it is.
Do you want to just mention a little bit about what we're installing and any of the hiccups that you encountered?
Because we've been doing this the last couple of days.
Yeah, so let's see.
The biggest hiccup I've had is when using Breeze, sometimes the pays and the sends don't go through.
And with one particular device that I have, whenever I set up Breeze on that device, it just doesn't seem to work.
Well for me, like I'll go in and I'll try to do the streaming, and it's the wrong amounts that are getting sent.
Like I'll try to do a boost for like a thousand Satoshis, but only like 150 get sent.
And that seems like a pretty oddball scenario.
Works fine on my other device.
And like I said, it's new stuff and they're still working kinks out.
But it just seemed to be like it's that device, because I can uninstall it, reinstall it, and it still gives me a hard time.
We'll put it down to device slash user error.
All right. Okay, so what do people do to get started on this?
Okay, all right. So you want me to go ahead and get started?
Let's do it. Let's roll it in, baby.
Let's get the Satoshis rolling.
Let's stack our sets.
So, oh, also just a note, if you do, like, you can set up with Linux, but there are some limited features, and as far as the Sphinx chat, we're going to do that first.
There's some limited features there.
If you do set up with Linux, like, you can't join Tribes right now, at least I wasn't able to.
It's kind of, it's something they're looking into.
But, you know, general, let's do Android, and hopefully it's the same on iOS.
I don't have much experience. iOS is a little easier because you don't have the APK hiccup, but yeah, that's it.
So go ahead, go for it. Yes.
Alright, so I'm going to get started here.
We're going to go to sphinx.chat.
Okay. That's the website, right?
Yes, correct. Yeah, so sphinx, S-P-H-I-N-X, sphinx.chat.
And there you go.
Excellent, excellent. And if you're...
I'm sorry, this is going to be kind of limited for anyone trying to follow along on audio only.
No, no, it's not an audio thing, man.
Don't worry about that. Okay.
So we're going to scroll down to download the app.
And now, what I found here is, like, if you just try to download it, your phone's going to complain, like, this can harm your device.
You have to right-click and hold it down.
Okay, so this is what you see.
I'll let you take it over from here.
This is what you see when you install?
Sure. Alright, so after you've installed, what you have to do is you have to set a node up.
And what Sphinx Chat does is they're going to run this node for you via the Lightning Network.
Right now, it's about 3,000 sats for 5,000 messages, 100,000 sats capacity.
Okay, so what they're doing is on their end, they're setting up the Lightning Network stuff.
Okay, do you want to give just two sats on the Lightning Network and nodes?
Sure. So, okay, so Bitcoin is this peer-to-peer ledger.
It's running its own nodes.
It's running its own decentralized ledger.
And the Lightning Network is what is called a Layer 2 solution, so that instead of having to transact directly onto the Bitcoin network, you can create this other network on top of that.
And the reason you might want to do that is to charge, be able to send smaller amounts at lower fees.
Because to transact on the Bitcoin network right now is very slow and very expensive.
But if you transact on the Lightning network, then it's far cheaper and it's far faster.
And now it is still being worked on.
There are still some bugs.
So it is not like primetime ready, but it is usable.
And hey, why not get in on the ground floor?
This is the way the world is going to work in the future.
You want to know how to do it first.
Well, and the other thing too, of course, you have a wallet.
So the sats that you get, you can just hoover them out and put them into some secure Bitcoin wallet or anything like that.
So it's not like you're going to lose stuff if you're regularly shuffling stuff out for the most part.
Does that make sense? Yep, yep, yep.
And I would say, you know, don't, of course, don't transact very large amounts.
You know, like Steph said, hoover them off to a safe place.
I'm sorry, don't transact very large amounts with one exception.
Jared, do you know what that exception might be?
Do you have any idea what that exception might be?
I have an inkling. I have an inkling.
Alright, so Santana says, I'm on Android, installed fine on my end.
Sorry, there was no need for the smoke voice, I just wanted to throw that in there, but sorry, go ahead.
Okay, so what I'm going to do is, because I don't want to take the time to do a credit card transaction, which you can do, it was fast and easy for me, I'm going to send some Satoshis to get a new node running.
So now when you do this step, they're going to be reserving a node for you.
A lot of times it will say they couldn't find one, and just keep trying until it goes through.
Just a sec, I'm just going to read this out in binary for those who are listening.
Sorry, go ahead. Oh, ooh.
Okay, so boom, boom, boom.
Where did I put...
I think it's over here.
All right, cool. Now, what do you do with the QR thing here?
So what I'm doing is I'm opening up my Breeze wallet on a different phone, and then from there, I'm going to send Satoshis to pay for this invoice.
So I'm scanning it with another device.
And we'll get to the Breeze wallet in a sec, right?
But this is... Assuming you have the Breeze wallet with a couple of Satoshis in, you can do this, right?
Correct. Okay. All right, so this payment was successful on one end.
Looks good here. And how fast was that?
Sorry, that was about 10 seconds, 15 seconds maybe?
If that. Oh, yeah. If that, right.
So somebody says, I'm tempted to scan that.
Oh, listen, we'll throw up some QR codes later, baby.
You can scan those all. I'm just kidding.
I'm just kidding. Go ahead. They are welcome to pay any and all of my invoices.
Just let me know. That's right.
Alright, so because I'm on this device, I can't use this device to scan this QR code.
I'm going to copy the...
This is a Sphinx code, so it's unique to Sphinx from my understanding.
So I'm going to copy the text here.
I'm sorry, somebody says, what were the fees to send to this wallet?
Oh, let's see.
Okay, so it was, I sent 3,000 sats, and the fee was one Satoshi.
One Satoshi. Yes.
Wow. Now, yeah, yeah, that's, hey, I'll take it.
And 0-0-0-1 percent?
Anyway, go on. This is an assumption on my part, but I'm assuming it's because Breeze and Sphinx have a lot of transactions going between each other.
There's plenty of channels already created.
Sometimes when you are creating a new channel, you may have to pay the exorbitant amount of like seven cents.
So just be ready.
Boy, Ether gas fees ain't cheap.
I just wanted to point that out the other day.
I always had to do something there.
I'm like, ooh, that's grabby shoelaces time.
But anyway, go ahead. Somebody says it has to be sent from a Lightning-capable BTC wallet.
Is that right? That is correct, yes.
A Lightning-capable BTC wallet.
All right, so now I've copied that paste, or that code that I got from there after reserving my node and paying for it.
And I want to paste that here.
Nick, that's a lovely name.
Where did it come from?
I don't know, just something my father thought of while he was shaving.
Our nickname is going to be Capital.
Capital. I like how you've got an uppercase at the beginning of Capital.
It seems very appropriate. Dad joke, number five.
All right. We're not going to pick an image.
No, no, that would mean going into your video history.
All right. You are ready to use fix.
We are live, baby live.
Okay, alright, so, you've gotten your app set up, you're just in here, and, alright, so what do we want to do?
We want to join the free domain chat.
This is quite true.
So, Steph, let's see, how are we going to get...
Oh, I should add you as a friend, right?
Or no, is there a way to search for tribes?
So let's see. Okay, so this account I'm probably going to nuke.
So if it gets like a million friend requests because I've shown the node, the public node ID, it doesn't hurt my feelings.
Jared is afraid of love.
If anybody shows him affection, he will delete the node.
All right. Okay, so in here, how do you find...
I assume we can share this, right?
So in here, how do you find MyTribe?
Just a quick run through, folks.
Up here you can see the balance of the Sphinx chat.
There we go. Alright, so down here, let's say you want to receive payment.
Okay, so Bitcoin is a push network, which means I know, let's say I know Steph's address, I can scan that and then it's a push payment.
Alright, so I send it from my end towards him, and there's nothing, it doesn't take any involvement from him whatsoever.
With Lightning, it looks like it's more of a pull payment, so what I do is, if I want, let's say I want to receive funds from someone, I create an invoice, I say how much I want, alright, then that creates an invoice, and they scan it, I'm going to wait until it shows up on the screen.
Wait, I can scan this now, right?
I can send you 500 Satoshis.
You absolutely can. All right.
Where do I do that?
Oh, here we go. Scan. Right. So if I scan your QR code and request 500 Satoshis, confirm.
So you just got 500 Satoshis back from me.
Because, you know, I like to pay people who are devoting out if there's time to help me out from a technical standpoint.
Apparently 500 Satoshis is about it.
That's awesome. Look at how fast.
It's already paid. It's already paid?
Beautiful. Yep. And it was also deducted from mine!
That seems very good. All right, now do we want to talk to people about the wallet?
Or is there something else we wanted to do here?
Okay, so, yeah, we can flow into setting up Breeze.
I guess folks have it as far as like joining the tribe.
Let's see, what would I do? Okay, so if I would say I wanted to join Steph's tribe and I had that QR code up, I would click this button.
And then that's going to allow me to scan the QR code, or I could paste the text here.
So that text that Steph put into the chat field, I could copy that and paste it down there into the Sphinx code, and thereby join that wonderful tribe.
Right, right. Now, has anyone had any luck getting into the...
Into the tribe that's there.
It's called Free Domain, of course. There's a picture of me against a cupboard.
It's glorious. Just let me know when you guys get in.
But maybe while we're just waiting for that to go, we can talk about the wallet.
This is the Breeze wallet, correct?
Yeah, the wallet that's underlying all of this, right?
Okay, so, well, I mean, it seems like the Sphinx Chat is its own wallet as well, and Breeze is a separate thing.
But they work together in order to accomplish what we're trying to do here is we want to be able to watch Steph's content and hit boost and stream Satoshis per minute and be able to boost him in Satoshis.
And in order to do that, we need the Breeze wallet as well.
So... All right.
I'm going to get started. So they said, sorry, they're saying here QR code doesn't recognize.
So I'm going to try just, I'll try a different one, which is sort of the main one that I had.
Let's try that. Okay.
So obviously you need some, some sets behind all of this stuff.
And we're going to, well, Jared's going to throw you going to throw you through how to do the wallet stuff.
So take it away, brother.
Yes. We're going to set that wallet up quick, I'm going to fund it, and then we're going to go throw Steph some sats.
And then I will take my shirt off, because I believe this is how it works on the internet.
You get income, you take off your shirt.
I will, in fact, if necessary.
So yeah, as you guys can see, I was able to join the tribe.
Just click on that. Awesome, awesome, awesome.
All right, cool. And we're going to go start the Breeze process.
All right, so what you're going to want to do is go to B-R-E-E-Z, so Breeze without the E at the end, dot technology.
Breeze dot technology. I think that's it.
Yep. Okay, so we're there, and then I'm going to go down to get it on Google Play.
Thank you, Barry. Cool. All right, what do we got there?
All right, so because I'm logged into my Google account, it says that I'm already part of the tester program, and now with the Breeze wallet, There's the early access version and then there's the regular version.
We want the early access version because that's what allows us to integrate with the whole podcast network system and throw those sats at Steph.
Another way of saying it is that we want the early access program because we have no sense of self-preservation, technologically speaking.
That's another way to get the cool stuff.
Okay, so I've clicked download it on Google Play.
Alright, another thing we want to see is early access down here.
It did cause me a bit of confusion earlier in the week when I was trying to set this up, and I was actually setting up the non-early access version, so we definitely want to make sure we got that.
Alright. Okay.
So I'm going to open the app.
It has installed. See, it's got a skateboarder.
It's totally safe. Okay.
Alright, so, if you had backed this up, you could restore from backup.
They have a function where you can back this up into your Google Drive situation, and you can encrypt that.
I personally prefer, like, a written seed phrase, but that is, you know, that is a convenient backup feature they do have at the moment.
Then we go to Let's Breeze.
Since Breeze is still in beta, there is a chance your money will be lost.
Use this app only if you are willing to take the risk.
I understand. Yeah, and the best way to make sure your money is not lost is to send it to me.
No question. Like, that's ironclad vault security right there.
154,000-bit encryption.
Anyway, sorry, go ahead. Okay, so where did...
Let's see. Wait, we've still got a swirly going.
The snake is chasing its own tail in the top right.
Also, Jared mentioned to me at the beginning.
Sorry, Jared. You mentioned to me at the beginning that the top right thing, it looks like a battery icon.
It is, in fact, the timer for our presentation.
So when that gets low enough, we basically have to stop no matter what.
Okay, go ahead. Quite true.
All right, so we've got this part right here.
I am going to go a little bit expedited.
I want to receive...
Yeah, just do you want to ask me for some sats and I'll...
Alright, let's go 10,000, because I want to give them to my favorite philosopher.
I've got to scan this, right?
Yep. Now, do I scan this in Breeze or in the other one?
Either should work.
Alright, let's try. Let's try a...
Sats, alright. You can also add sats through Cash App, right, in Sphinx.
Okay, so hang on a sec. That is true, yep.
Now, also, what I did notice that if you set it up on at least Linux, you can send Bitcoin to Sphinx, but you can't do that in the Android app that I noticed.
And perhaps you could, if you set it up in Windows, you can send Bitcoin to it.
At the moment, if you're on the mobile, you can only use Cash App, from my understanding.
Right, okay, so let me just see here.
Oh yeah, so under balance, send, receive, I can get this.
You are requested to pay 10,000 sats.
So I think you, it says insufficient local balance for me and Breeze.
Okay, so we'll do 5,000 instead.
No, just do 10.
I don't have much here. Can I do 10 sets?
Yes, do 10 sets. Let's do that.
Although, make it 9.
Just in case, because guys, the map is overhead, right?
I think you just said 100.
Send. All right, hang tight.
We'll see what we get here. No, hang on a sec here.
No, just ask me for 9, and let's do it that way.
I don't have much in here. Okay.
Alright, so... That's a shame.
That's a crime. We ought to make sure you have...
Yeah, yeah. Early days, man.
Early days. Alright, here we go.
So, I've just scanned.
You're supposed to pay nine sets.
And they keep it open while it's doing that.
And payment was successfully sent.
Payment approved. And again, we're talking like...
It's already here. One to two seconds, right?
One to two seconds.
You try that on Bitcoin and you will get off.
Yeah. Yeah, it's telling me to back up, and I will take care of that later.
I'm going to go ahead and send a little bit more because I want to show off some of these features.
And let's see, how long does it take me to do it with my other one?
Hit Approve just now, and...
Fade. Bam. Yeah, yeah.
Alright, so. Now, if you have installed the proper early access version, you need to come up here in the top left.
Yeah, this is the cool stuff.
This is the stuff that is really, really great.
So ahead. Oh, yes.
Yes. It's automatically going to come over and highlight this podcast feature.
We're going to click that. And then we're going to come down here, click Discover.
Alright. We're going to come up here to search for podcasts.
Oh, it's right there, right there on the screen already.
But yeah, you can do a search. Is it already on the screen?
Yeah, yeah. I boosted it.
Oh, yeah. Just scroll down a bit.
Let's see. You've got to get rid of this.
Oh, excellent!
Beautiful! There I am.
It's my experience. You have to type out free domain.
Free and freedom didn't work for me.
All right. Come over here.
First off, I've got to follow the man.
And we're going to come over and play one of our podcasts.
And it's going to highlight these features.
This is like a one-time boost situation.
Alright, over here.
This is streaming. So this will send so many Satoshis to staff per minute of content.
And you don't have to, right?
You can listen for free, but if you want to stream, that certainly helps.
And text just doesn't feel chaotic enough.
Did you get that feeling? Text just does not feel chaotic enough.
So I thought, let's see if we can get ourselves some voice chat.
So we're going to send them in a boost.
I thought we'd be doing this for a while, and yes.
That's a little bit like something out of the live stream from last night.
Sorry, it's a joke. Go ahead.
all right where i close that all right now in order to get back to your wallet you have to come back to the top left click that uh microphone and come over to balance and then let's see all right so this is what i want to see if it's working right and like i said on another device i was having problems with for some reason uh it it wouldn't send the money to to the podcaster Some of it would go to other places.
And I'm not saying there's anything at all maliciously here.
It was just an issue with that device.
But the money wasn't getting where it needed to go.
And it was telling me, you know, clearly.
And so... Yeah, so this is what we want to see.
We want to see that some is going to Breeze and some is going to the podcaster.
So everything is working over here.
Steph, I think that's the meat of our presentation.
Yeah, yeah, no, I got them right here, the 94 sets.
So, yeah, that's just a way to, you know, help out.
It's very, very cheap.
It's virtually friction-free.
It's very fast. And, you know, and for those who, so Lightning has a layer, as you say, that it resolves on and then eventually it drops down to Bitcoin.
Is that right? Or is it totally separate and then you move it by hand?
It will. It can eventually come back to Bitcoin.
But entering...
Let's see. I don't want to misrepresent that.
So the way Lightning Network works is that they open these channels between nodes to send and receive payments.
And they fund those channels with so much Bitcoin.
And I'm not sure if they can change that later, like add more or take from a channel without closing it.
But I do know that eventually they do resolve and close these channels and just at that time, they tally up all the balances and send the proper amount of Bitcoin to each end of the channel.
Does that make sense? Yeah, yeah.
Okay, so as far as the sequence goes...
We did it in a particular order, and we're going to put a document, a link to this show, where you can get all of the details and information that you want about how to set this stuff up.
And I really would recommend it.
Look, not just for me. Look, obviously, there's a benefit of me if you stream me SaaS or whatever.
It's not going to make me much money, but it's really, really cool technology.
What I like about it is you want to be cutting edge on how to decentralize Get outside of censorship, get out of payment deplatformings and all that kind of stuff.
This is, I mean, it's an overused phrase.
It is kind of a nonsense phrase, but this is the wave of the future.
This is how...
Dissident intellectuals are going to be funded going forward, so I really, really do invite you.
It's pretty easy. It might take 10-20 minutes to set up, but it's a great way to listen.
It's a good podcast interface to listen to.
If you don't want to stream Satoshis to me or to other people, I'm sure that's fine, but you can if you want.
And to send and receive stuff is really great, and it's a way of working With Satoshis, with Bitcoins, that is just so fast and so powerful.
So I just want to mention that if you just give people like the 30-second, here's what you should start with and here's how you should go through the process, I think that'd be very helpful.
Sorry, what you start with and go through the process for what?
Yeah, yeah. So let's just say somebody's starting with a phone, they'll do their Sphinx first, then they'll do their Breeze.
Is that the best way to go about it?
So, technically, depending on what you want to do, if you want to be part of the tribe, the Free Domain tribe, and chat on Sphinx with us, then you would need to set up Sphinx.
You can just set up Breeze, which, as you guys can see, was a lot quicker, but And donate to Steph that way.
And what I found with the Breeze wallet, it was personally really easy.
I did try a couple of other Lightning wallets.
Some of them asked a lot of invasive questions.
I was not appreciative at all, wanted phone numbers and emails and yada, yada, yada.
It's like, no, thank you. But Breeze, I got it set up, and I could send Bitcoin to it, and I was sending on the Lightning Network pretty quickly.
And as someone who's been critical of it and its development, I'm impressed.
This is great. I'm enjoying it.
And I love being able to help out.
Yeah, so if you want to join the chat, then you've got to put in Sphinx.
If you want to just stream Satoshi's to my podcast or to other people's podcasts and just go with Bree's.
And listen, really, really appreciate everyone.
If anybody has any last questions, that's great.
Really appreciate your time. And of course, massive technical help, Jared, for setting this stuff up and taking your time today.
I really appreciate that.
And we'll just wait and see if there...
I think we're pretty self-explanatory if there's anybody who...
If you have any last questions or comments, I'm happy to hear.
Otherwise, we'll close it down.
And again, my big thanks to everyone watching and to Jared and to the guys at Breeze and at Sphinx who are just doing some groundbreaking, groundbreaking stuff.
All right. Yeah, lots of thanks.
Yes, I wanted to especially say thank you to the Sphinx support, the Sphinx group, to the Breeze guys.
Everybody was really helpful.
They were happy to help out, which is wonderful to hear, especially Adam Curry of the No Agenda podcast.
He helped out. We took time on his day to be available and answer questions.
Really helpful. We really, really appreciate it.
Fantastic. All right, and if people need help, I can't remember if you'd volunteer or if we send them someplace.
If they're having some issues, what should they do?
Yes, I am happy to help.
Please reach out. And you can reach me at jaredwoodard at protonmail.com.
That's J-A-R-R-O-D and Woodard with one W at protonmail.com.
Email me there. I'm happy to help out.
If you already know me and other channels, please reach out.
Well, thanks for that very much.
And lots of love from up here.
Really appreciate you guys. Welcome to the future.
