Today I want to talk a little bit about how to defend the Jewish nation in your social media circles.
This is important information that everybody needs to know.
We've only got 15 minutes left, so I want to get through most of it here.
All of us are inundated daily with a relentless barrage of slander against the Jewish nation.
Some of it from friends, some of it from acquaintances or colleagues or powerful people within our social or professional networks.
Or our children who won't talk to us anymore, or our wives who divorce us.
Why do all these assholes hate me?
What's happening?
I ultimately understand the fear involved in speaking up, and I understand the sense of futility.
I also understand the risks on every level.
I understand exactly how hard it can be to stand and allow yourself to be counted.
How many Like, Israel supporters have been fired from their jobs for supporting Israel in America?
I don't think it's happened yet, unfortunately.
I don't think it's happened either.
Sure, there's been actual hate crimes that have been committed against Jewish people, or actual anti-Zionist taggings and stuff like that.
But being afraid to speak up or whatever doesn't seem to cost anybody their job if you're pro-Israeli.
It definitely costs pro-Palestinian folks their jobs.
And yet I've been doing it regularly for over 10 years now.
Wow, it's so brave of you, a podcaster, to talk.
I've always thought about that, about how brave this is.
And you haven't had repercussions besides comments.
So what are you talking about?
And while it's often very uncomfortable, a lot of good has come of it.
I have shown up as my authentic self, which is, and I don't want anybody to harass this woman or whatever, many of whom I think of as real life friends.
I've gotten messages from Jews all over the globe expressing appreciation for things I've written, and I've gotten messages from non-Jews telling me I changed their mind, just the evangelicals in our inbox, like DMing every Jew that comes across their feed.
Wow, I am a strong ally of yours.
You've shown me the way and just adding them to another email list.
And she knows they're not Jewish because they really make sure that it's very clear in the message that they are not Jewish.
In this post, I want to share the top six tips I've learned about how to be effective, how to stay sane, and how to represent our community in a way that doesn't inspire either more enmity or regret.
I hope some of them will be helpful to you.
Make rational choices about where and when to engage.
Do not engage with trolls.
Engage only with people of basic goodwill.
Weigh the energy-to-benefit ratio of investing your time in an exchange.
Good idea.
Smart.
Yesterday was an occasion where I decided to wade into the fray.
An author I wildly respect and adore, a man with a following of more than 12,000 on Facebook, many of them thoughtful, literary types, posted a call for a ceasefire at any cost.
At any cost?
What does that mean?
Yeah, what does that mean?
What are you saying?
Immediately his comment section filled with the usual content.
Quote, thank you for standing against genocide, etc.
The usual content of people accusing my state of being murderous.
I'm so happy that these people do get this much shit, you know what I mean?
It's the only retribution and satisfaction that we can hope to achieve in the short term, to be quite honest.
This was a situation in which I felt it was worthwhile to represent our side.
I left a comment of my own.
Half a dozen people immediately and predictably piled on.
The trolls have predictably piled on to my no-innocent-civilians-in-Gaza stance yet again.
Also, you went there.
I know that's stupid, but you went to that comment section.
You wait, you... Yeah.
You're the troll here, don't you understand?
That's how that works.
Well, she's gonna explain why she did it the right way.
The tips that follow were what guided me as I sparred with Israel haters.
Two, be fastidiously civil and calm.
NEVER!
Sink to their level of abuse, name-calling, or hysteria.
Never resort to personal attacks.
And the more vitriolic they get, the better, in a way.
They will make themselves look worse and worse while you look better and better to anyone watching and listening.
And there are always people watching and listening.
Here is an actual exchange from yesterday.
Troll.
Fuck off and die.
Me.
So persuasive, I bow to your eloquence.
Got him!
Got his ass, fucked him up!
Troll.
You're a stupid piece of shit who is actually endangering the lives of millions of innocents.
Oh wow, I'm sure resorting to ad hominem attacks will win you this war.
Yep.
Yep.
Uh, no.
The actual one is, uh, him.
Okay, another troll in response to a paragraph-long set of facts I just presented.
Him.
Bullshit!
Me.
Oh, well that settles it.
I guess I'll pack up and concede defeat.
I love having, like, writing a whole blog post teaching someone how to be fucking annoying.
