In the 2010's, Tony joins Alexander and Bryan Quinby to explore what Butt Rock is doing in the wake of "the Nickelback joke," how metalcore has influenced a new generation of bands who want to signal their masculinity while expressing sensitivity, and we reach the inevitable conclusion of butt rock: Theory of a Deadman

Time Text
So the last band I wanted to talk about, and that's the band I got an interview from that we're going to listen to.
This band is called Theory of a Dead Man.
Beautiful.
And I'm just going to play, I want to play a song real quick to get us into this.
And I'm only going to play two by these guys.
I think if you play three, you're going to get canceled.
I could get canceled.
I would cancel me if I played three.
I think we're all going to get canceled.
That's one song per each of us.
All right, here it comes.
Here it comes.
The bitch came back the very next day.
Oh, the bitch came back.
Thought she wasn't gonna, but the bitch came back.
She couldn't stay away.
Don't you know the bitch came back I like her so much better when she's down on her knees Cause my arms in my face is when I'm starting to see That all my friends are alive for thinking that we'd be wrong Well she's so fucking stupid that she's singing along Cause the girls with girls these are all the same Forget the diamonds and pearls
they just wanna ring Before you know it you're like a dog on a leash Well you can try and change the world but you won't change me Let's change back the very I heard this for the first time today And I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt it's one of the worst songs I've ever heard in my life.
Like this song fucking sucks.
It's incredible.
It's very relevant to this show.
I, there's like three different things that I can point to.
One of which is like, I, I, I feel like a fucking thesis on butt rock.
It does.
You're absolutely right.
They got the voice.
They got the misogyny, like the, I'm the victim here by these women.
It even just feels like there isn't a moral to this story or anything like that other than, you know, women are terrible.
They're so stupid.
That was wild.
So, I mean, the line Um, let me, what's, what's the one going up to it?
Yeah, it's, uh, I like her so much better when she's down on her knees.
Cause I, you know, I like getting blow jobs.
We all do.
Cause when she's in my face is when I'm starting to see that all my friends were right for thinking that we'd be wrong.
Here's the line.
Well, she's so fucking stupid.
I bet she's singing along.
That was the lyric that hit me.
When I listened to it earlier today, I really felt like, holy shit.
This is great because this is the butt rock version of You're So Vain.
I bet you probably think this song is about you.
Exactly!
And it's like, who's the better artist?
Theory of a Deadman or Carole King?
Who's to say?
This song should only exist in, like, a rom-com team movie where, like, the protagonist and antagonist go against each other in, like, a battle of the bands.
And this is the song the bad guy sings.
He's really a piece of shit.
It's the only way this song should exist.
It's the band it's in like this song exists in like a slightly different version of the movie Orange County.
Yes.
Where like the popular girls are dancing to a song where like a guy who looks like the guy from the Disney Channel original series, Lazy Town, sings about them all being stupid bitches.
It looks like.
I mean, this song is seriously the top of my list for some of the worst shit I've ever heard.
It was just...
I like, I can't believe, I don't know what the original song is.
I know, God, The Cat Came Back I think is the song or something.
I'm not, that's what somebody said.
Is this like an homage?
Is this a parody or an homage to another song?
This is an homage to a, and I don't know the song though, so.
Probably a classic 50s rock and roll song.
Um, so I love, I love, I love just him calling my girlfriend's a stupid bitch.
Like I love that lyric because it is, it represents the progression of butt rock that we've explored throughout this, this mini series, which is, you know, post grunge, uh, being a, a followup to grunge or just inspired by grunge where it's like, Oh, I'm depressed because my relationship isn't good because I've got all these complications in my head or whatever.
I overanalyze things.
I've become cumbersome to my girl, and it's a thing I've got to deal with.
And then, and then, you know, further along the line, it's, it's like, you know, uh, hey, you're a crazy bitch, but you fuck so good or whatever.
Now you're just calling the girl you're dating a stupid.
It's like the pixels are showing in the copy of the copy of the copy.
It's mean Nickelback.
Like it is.
They are mean Nickelback.
This guy is the song that this guy is the guy that Puddle of Mud was singing about.
Yeah, right.
She hates me.
Yeah, it's she hates me.
This is the this is the guy that she was like cheating on him with or something.
Exactly.
The lyric is right.
She's so fucking stupid that she's singing along.
I contend that this is the most butt rock song of all time.
It might be.
It's not necessarily like the best butt rock song or like the most indicative of like the sound of the genre, but it encompasses more of butt rock than we have talked about, which is this bitch is so stupid and crazy that she doesn't know I hate her.
It's just a combination of Cold's stupid girl that we talked about, and Buck Cherry's crazy bitch that we talked about, and Three Days Grace's I Hate Everything About You.
It is all those songs wrapped into one.
You are so stupid and crazy that you don't know I hate you.
I love that.
You're right.
This is the culmination.
This is what you and Brett referred to as music by people who got someone pregnant when they were 20 years old.
