Do you consider yourself old or young?
Or is that a word that makes any sense to you?
Do you consider yourself tall or short or fat or skinny?
And in everything that I've explained to you, it always has to do with...
Yeah, but in comparison to what or to whom?
That's the issue.
Am I old?
Not compared to other people.
Maybe you have some internal sense of being a kid.
See, I hate the age thing.
I hate it.
The reason why is there are some things where you Theoretically, what we used to say, you will never be not a part of.
And there were times when we considered, well, you know, where you're from or whatever degree of biological or whatever physiological constancy.
I'm not sure if we can even say that anymore.
But I will tell you this.
If you're lucky, if you're lucky, you will be old or older.
If you're lucky.
If you're not, You will not be.
And that old person that you see, that you kind of laugh at, and I do the same thing, I've always done it.
Because I think it's more of kind of a mindset that we talk about.
We talk about old people.
It's the way they think, sort of.
But that old person, that's going to be you.
If you're lucky.
It's one of those things where you can't believe it.
Have you ever been to a...
And I did this one time and I'll never do it again.
Have you ever been to a high school reunion?
Oh dear God!
Oh dear God!
You'll see, who are these people?
What happened to them?
And they may be looking at you in the same way.
Oh my God!
But it's not so much in terms of looks.
It's in terms of attitude or something.
Well here's something which I think is really interesting and you should share this with the youngsters.
They'll get a kick out of this.
When you get older, and either you'll know this or whatever, you always want to see, am I losing it?
Am I losing my mind?
Is it happening?
Am I losing it?
Am I forgetting?
Because I think that's the worst thing in the world.
What?
You know, because you just don't want to end up being the burden or whatever it is.
The issue is, and this is the most important, this is very, very critical for us to think, are there some things that we get better at when we get older?
Now, old people, and I guess my generation, we always love to think that we're smarter.
Oh, we know so much.
We make the same stupid mistakes.
Maybe...
Maybe we make fewer mistakes because maybe we have less opportunity.
I don't know.
But we don't make the same mistakes we make as a young person because the opportunities to make these mistakes really aren't there.
I mean, most of the time, it's weird.
When you get older, I think you just don't want to do a lot of dangerous stuff that you did want to do when you were younger.
It's not that you're afraid.
You just don't want to...
But here's one for you.
I remember reading this years ago.
I can look for the citation.
I don't know where it is, but I'll never forget what it said.
And it makes a lot of sense.
And tell this to your grandchildren.
And it works something like this.
They gave a test, if you will, to a bunch of...
Kids, youngsters, whatever they are.
And they were very good at getting the answers quickly.
Very good at, you know, quick things, you know, whack-a-mole kind of stuff.
Can you do quick computations or whatever it is in terms of speed and mental facility and the like.
Okay?
That's the way that worked.
Very good.
Now, older folks, and how How they were defined as older.
I'm sorry, I can't necessarily tell you this, but the older folks may not have done as well as that, but they did better in telling the difference between this situation and that situation.
Which one of these are different?
What's missing in this picture?
That this picture does or doesn't have.
What's the difference between this situation and that situation?
Between this picture and that picture?
Between this person and that person?
This scene and that scene?
And what do you call that?
What do you call the ability to differentiate between two situations?
You call it judgment.
Judgment.
Absolutely critical.
Think about that.
The ability to say, I can tell the difference between doing it this way or doing it that way, and I think this way makes better, that's called judgment.
You call it wisdom, and I don't like the wisdom.
I like judgment.
Your ability to differentiate between two seemingly identical situations, but in fact aren't.
This is the stuff that I love.
Of our human cognition that I just absolutely love.
Because we always love to see human mentation in animals.
Animals do a lot of great things, don't get me wrong.
Dogs, in some respects, are better than people in certain categories.
But this is a different story.
They may enjoy some of the...
Similarities through learning, but the ability to take something which is brand new and apply a set of circumstances, whereas you weigh and conduct differences, that's the beautiful part about the older mind.
Nobody thinks about that.
We live in a society that when you get old, well, I don't know now, but...
Because I'm not really sure what people think anymore.
I know that's kind of an over-generalized statement, but I really don't know what people think anymore.
I really don't know if my way of thinking from my generation makes any sense today.
And I'll just leave it at that.
But I think one of the things which is the most important is As we get older, or as we are not as young anymore, and whatever this means, old and young, I'm sorry.
Listen, life is a conveyor belt.
You know this.
Don't laugh at old people, because you're going to be there too, like I said, if you're lucky.
And you end up kind of looking sort of like them.
Have you ever noticed that when people get to a certain age, there's a certain fashion design they like, and certain hairstyles they like?
They had big glasses.
All these people were young whippersnappers.
You know, when you look at men who were losing so many of them, but when you see somebody who was in World War II, I remember one guy who passed away years ago, but he was a little Italian guy.
He looked like a Keebler elf Italian.
This guy stormed.
Omaha Beach.
He was there in D-Day.
And I know people use that expression.
And they don't really mean storming the beach, but he did it.
And he was there.
And he absolutely did it.
And to look at him now, you think, how can this little old man?
Well, when he was 18, 19 years old, it's a different story.
So always remember that the person you're looking at right now, who might seem older, during their You know, their heyday might have been wild.
Because remember, the wildest part of recent American history was in the 1920s.
Nothing compared to that.
I know it's hard for you to believe.
You're not thinking that.
You think, oh no, the 60s?
No, no, no, no, no.
The 20s.
Believe me.
We'll talk about that later on.
That's a different story.
So just remember, as one gets older, certain things may fall by the wayside.
But judgment?
