The definition of what is and what is not violent makes no sense in California.
Let me give you some examples.
Rape of an intoxicated person is considered non-violent in California.
Use of an explosive device is non-violent in California.
Assault by means of force is non-violent in California.
Domestic violence is considered a non-violent offense.
How does it make any sense that domestic violence is considered nonviolent?
What 57 did was it allowed for inmates to apply for early release if they have engaged in rehabilitative effort.
It was sold to the public that these were only going to apply to people that were in prison for a nonviolent offense.
But the definition of what is and what is not violent, it's crazy.
We've got our definitions all mixed up.
It's eroded the credibility of our criminal justice system.
Because when people are victimized by a criminal, And they're told, your attacker is in prison for eight years.
And then all of a sudden they hear, oh, that changed.
Because what happened to you is considered non-violent.
It erodes the foundation of the trust that is required between government and its citizens.
