elijah schaffer
So guys, this is Chaz or Chop, depending on who you ask.
Capitol Hill Occupied Protest or the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone.
People call it different things.
There's been disagreements.
But essentially, it's just a place, a few block area.
Been here for a few days hanging out.
And it's right here outside of Seattle.
But for the most part, if you just walk in, people have said that there's, you know, They check your IDs or weird things like that, but it's not true.
But if you come in and you walk through the place, you end up having, there's checkpoints.
And people are armed sometimes at the checkpoints, but mostly it's just for cards, really.
They have barriers here and here and free apples.
But it's all pretty much just like, it's just like an open place.
You can't really drive in, but they do have these big barricades.
And as you walk in, it's pretty amazing.
There's some of these buildings, like 12 Avenue Arts is kind of cut in half by the border.
And as you walk in, they do have a liquor store right here.
And this is the entrance right here.
Now, if you walk over to my right, I won't be too loud because they're doing a, there's basically like this cultural center.
unidentified
It's like the arts area of the place.
elijah schaffer
And so listen a little bit of like what they're saying here for a moment.
unidentified
I'm up here today because I cannot let the world ignore the two lives that were carelessly taken from the Muckle Shoe tribe by King County Sheriff's.
elijah schaffer
So there's like indigenous groups and different groups that kind of talk there all day and they have bands.
If you come over here, this is the police precinct.
So I'm coming in through one of the north entrances.
But this is the Seattle Police Department, East Precinct.
It's sort of become like, it's been covered with different paraphernalia signs, activist stuff, no justice, no peace.
If you come over here to this side of Chaz, past some of the homes and campers and stuff like that, there's a vigil.
unidentified
Hi.
elijah schaffer
Give me a second to get through here.
unidentified
Two deputies who came into our reservation and stole two precious lives.
Renee and David, Renee and Davis struggled with depression at the time of the murder.
And I advocate for the deinvestment of police and for the reinvestment of our health.
So it's boarded up, as you can see, but there's a vigil.
There's a lot of these vigils right here.
People are laying candles down.
elijah schaffer
They have the lines of George Floyd, David, McAddy, Brianna, Charlena, etc.
And this is what it looks like.
So a lot of these vigils, and then there's like art, a lot of art exhibits like this, like an upside-down flag, which of course means like you're in jeopardy.
And there's a lot of these self-made gardens.
And you'll see down here that there's another checkpoint.
So essentially, I'm not going to go down there and take you to the rest of the parts.
Up in that street, in that street, there's like these checkpoints with multiple barriers, armed guards.
But for the most part, you can just walk in and out, especially during the day.
This caught fire last night, but they put it out.
That's why they have this thing.
But I'm going to take you guys down the main road, Main Street.
unidentified
King County Sheriff's Road escalation methods and home providers.
elijah schaffer
Okay, so now we're going down the main street.
A lot of you guys are curious.
This is the abandoned police precinct.
Apparently, as PD said, there are offices inside.
You can see lights are on.
unidentified
But it's here and it's been completely overtaken.
elijah schaffer
There's graffiti all over the ground, aka arch.
And that's the entrance there.
This alleyway used to be open and a lot of people have been graffitiing and different things.
But they've now closed it off for whatever reason.
I think it's because of vandalism because of the neighbors, like they're trying to work in coalition with the neighbors.
But as you walk down the main street and you check this out, there's Ben and Jerry's big progressive company passing out free ice cream, I think, to everybody.
Just showing their support.
You got to have billionaire companies in Zaporozhy.
Got the green hats, the Lawyers Guild.
And it's essentially turned into a carnival over the last few days.
We've got $6 hot dogs.
So down here is one of the biggest memorials as you get down the main street.
This is, so that's where we just came from.
And as you come down here, very, very interesting individuals everywhere.
The photographers, different people.
But here we have a memorial.
So I don't want to be so loud.
Because I don't want to be disrespectful here.
But this is like a very, very big memorial to people whose lives were lost by police shootings and various things.
A lot of these, see these plants, a lot of these things going on.
And obviously you have a lot of windows, like BLM, you know, a lot of tagging, different things.
Got a queer bar here.
Typical Seattle.
See, we're just nice.
You could just kind of come in and out.
And so, like, kind of what the idea that there's not free movement in and out of Chas is kind of not true because these people are not going to do anything to you.
unidentified
But you definitely can't drive in, so you're definitely fine to just come in here.
Yeah.
elijah schaffer
Nice bring some of that.
Hey, comps, etc.
So, one thing that's kind of cool is if you come over here, leaving the vigil.
Oh, there's pizza.
Domino's is the official pizza of the revolution.
It really is.
They've been delivering a lot of pizza here.
I'm really happy about that.
It's free too.
Everything is free.
So this is the no-cop co-op right here.
And it's essentially the people's comrade, like giving away food.
And it's gotten a lot more organized.
Kind of like a lot nicer than it was over the last couple days.
Look at how much donations.
unidentified
Apparently, getting donations from all over the world.
elijah schaffer
And so very, very nice place.
Toilet paper, whatever you could really want.
Well, I mean, look at this.
There's a lot of supplies.
So this is good stuff.
You guys have been getting donations from all over the world, right?
Like, that's what I've been hearing.
unidentified
Yeah, I guess.
elijah schaffer
Just people sending stuff, money, pizza, ordering stuff in.
Domino said that.
unidentified
Can't believe it.
Dope.
Not sure.
elijah schaffer
And it's gotten more organized.
Good job.
So it's gotten more organized.
It's got more together.
And they are keeping trash.
It's actually fairly clean in the main part.
But you have donations.
You can drop off.
Yes, no worries.
Yeah, so you come in here.
Can I squeeze through here real fast?
You can kind of pick up what you need or drop off everyone's.
unidentified
Okay.
elijah schaffer
All right.
You can kind of bring in whatever you need.
We're going through here.
A lot of interesting, colorful people.
So we'll come back over here.
But over here is the conversation.
This is a really cool place.
People can just like hang out.
And like it's essentially people just coming together and talking.
It's the D. Here's the decolonization conversation cafe.
They all got names and dream boards.
And you kind of sit in a circle and talk to people or square.
You got a tennis hoop back there.
This is a, I don't know what this is.
I don't know if that is, but check out some of the vendors that you have here.
A little capitalism, but Black Lives Matter.
Selling t-shirts, unidentifiable vendors.
Don't know where the money's going, but it's not that big of a deal, I guess.
Make money where you can.
But this is like a lot of like bread and eggs, and people are making food for the people right here.
And then you have, like, I don't know, typical to Seattle people.
There's unemployment help, even.
They have like communities.
I don't know what all these places are, but there's something similar.
And then you have, let's see, there's free coffee.
There's a defund the police department booth.
So this is pretty much what Main Street looks like.
Main Street Chaz.
It's a big Black Lives Matter thing.
I've been here for a few days.
There's some random encampments, DJ, a lot of music.
So let's take you guys over to the rest of the place.
And at this point, if you've made it this far, just so you know, this is not how things are at night.
So there's daytime, there's daytime chas, and then there's nighttime chaz.
And there's legal observers, so this part of the law enforcement is the green hats, they kind of keep track of things legally.
But if you come here, see, there's another.
There's another, um...
unidentified
You're fucking out!
elijah schaffer
And there's just another one of these barricades, but we're kind of out of the city now.
And as you come through, check this out.
So here's one of the main So you come through here, back out of the city, into the park.
And it's sort of like a music festival vibe now here where people just sort of hang out.
And you got these camps.
And here's the Sweetboard Park.
You play dodgeball over there.
But then there's so many, there's camps and just people hanging out.
I know this can be a little bit monotonous for some of you guys, but some of you guys, you can't be here.
So there's no photos or videos allowed.
Oops, I'm breaking the law in a place where there's no laws.
My bad.
Emotional support tent that says emotional support.
So you have emotional and feelings tense.
There's a lot of that stuff.
There's a DJ and everyone's dancing.
I mean guys, it's severed social distancing pretty well right now.
Not earlier, a lot of support.
It's good stuff.
A lot of really cute dogs.
Okay.
So as we walk through, this is like the main field.
Looking back, that's Main Street going up.
So we came from over there.
More dogs.
Following me.
unidentified
There's the groups.
Family friendly.
Anti-fascist.
elijah schaffer
So now let's get to the next part of the camp.
So this is basically, look, more food...
It says no photos, no videos.
There's a desire to not really be documented.
So as you go through here, they've erected, I mean, things have gotten really serious here.
So this is straight up kitchen that they're building with fridges and stoves.
I mean, this is like a full-on operation, right?
unidentified
People just tag in here.
elijah schaffer
Adding some artwork.
And like, we're just getting like pretty much anything.
So there's some memorials.
We got porta potties.
We have everything.
And then we have a lot of these.
I told you, there's a lot of these pop-up vegetable gardens that people, there's actually like Woodsmith, but this is my favorite part of the entire place.
This is one of the camps.
My favorite part of this entire place is the garden.
It's really like a peaceful, beautiful place.
And if you look at it, they're straight up fertilizing, they're growing everything.
It's like, it's developed over the days.
You might have seen pictures online.
We have a lot of different kinds of gardens here too.
Like this is the Ashen.
Many different Indigenous communities have been growing Three Sisters for thousands of years to help one another.
I'm not sure what that means, but this is the garden specifically for, yeah, this is a garden for black and indigenous folks and their plant allies.
So the gardens we're in, there's these ones that have like little names.
This to-do list is kind of like community, I don't know, community growth, a community garden project.
Pretty cool stuff.
Got water.
It's really come to life over the last few days.
unidentified
And so it's like absolutely kind of cool.
elijah schaffer
And everyone here is pretty much like friendly.
Just, I don't know.
It's got good vibes.
And then if you come back up through here, you have some building.
I don't know what that is really.
I think it might have been the restrooms.
Um, yeah, I'm gonna empty.
That's the no pee zone.
I'm having a bigger.
If you come over here, they're removing the grass, I think, and they're going to be making a whole new garden.
Or they put, oh, they put this on top.
And you have more, like, oh, there's a PLN place, and there's a play set and kids playing, and there's more encampment.
But if you walk through here, there's also a DJ back there where they have like little raves at night.
And I mean, it continues.
I mean, this is a park, right?
So there's like a little bit of a LARPer.
unidentified
White silence is violent sign.
A lot of cute dogs hanging out.
elijah schaffer
Empty lakes, construction.
Imagine like getting a new apartment for $2,500 and you live in a different country.
unidentified
It's crazy, but, uh...
Shit!
Just hanging on.
elijah schaffer
Yeah, so then there's like this.
They're doing some art projects.
And it says no kits, right?
It has a sign.
There's a lot of no pictures, no videos allowed.
But I don't see why there's any problem with taking pictures or videos, especially because everyone that doesn't want to be seen has their faces covered.
But as you walk through, I know this is a little bit monotonous to you guys for sure by now if you've sat through 15 minutes of this.
But it's very important that you check out what it really looks like.
And you come back here, I'm checking you from one end to one end, all the blocks all the way through.
That way you know what it is.
And this is what it looks like during the day.
It's a lot different than at night.
I'll probably do another walkthrough at night just so you can see it and see the difference.
Anyway, obviously, I'm not going to show my face because I have more days of reporting to do.
And I cannot, I cannot stress enough how important it is to remain anonymous here for obvious reasons.
Especially the fact that a lot of the, you know, coverage and different things that we've covered here has even been, it's been retweeted by Donald Trump, the president weighed in from the footage that I captured, which was the second time in a couple of weeks, which is really cool to get recognition for the work.
Working hard.
But you guys are the best.
Anyway, that was a walkthrough of Chaz or Chalk, however you want to describe it here.
It is Sunday.
I don't know what day it is.
I've lost track because in Chaz, there's no national anthem, no laws, and no time.
