We like simple truths, or rather we like simple stories.
Therefore, we like lies.
We're in a freaking dystopian novel where you can't work, can't make any money, all the criminals are going to be let out of jail, and you can't buy a gun.
If it is what it's supposed to be, we're not prepared.
We don't have masks, bro.
We don't even make our own antibiotics.
elijah schaffer
Why is there no food?
And why are people buying all this stuff?
Like, what is that all about?
mike cernovich
Well, we're learning what it's like to be an empire in decline without a central national identity.
We're not bound together by any kind of shared culture, by any kind of shared religion, by any kind of even shared worldview anymore.
And that's a joke, bro.
This is a complete farce that we're living through right now.
elijah schaffer
Welcome back to Slightly Offensive with your favorite host, me, Elijah Schaefer.
Today's topic is incredible.
We have dishonesty all around the country, both in the media and with the politicians.
And right now we're in a pandemic and we just don't know what is going on and what's truth and what's lies.
My guest today is Mike Cernovich, who is the author of the book Girl in Mindset, as well as a visionary filmmaker of the documentary Hoaxed.
He is here on the show today to discuss this important topic.
So Mike, welcome to the show.
mike cernovich
It's always a pleasure.
I've been waiting a long time to do this.
elijah schaffer
Yeah, and I've been trying to get you in here for a while.
And because of the pandemic, you're not traveling.
I'm not traveling.
So this actually is kind of a blessing.
We got to have you here.
And if you guys don't know about Mike, check the links in the description, of course, to find out everything that he does and to find his social media.
Anyway, we're going to jump into the topic.
So our topics today, we're going to be talking about the media and what's more dangerous.
Is it really them?
Is the virus itself as dangerous as what people are saying?
Or is the real enemy in the room actually the economic meltdown that's coming?
But first, please make sure that you realize that this version on YouTube is always a shortened version of the podcast.
It's much fuller and longer on blazetv.com.
And you can use the code Elijah below with the link to get $10 off a year subscription.
But if you don't want to watch the video version and you just want the whole thing anyways, we offer the whole version free audio only on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and wherever else podcasts are available.
So go ahead and give us a five-star rating and download that always so you can get the full version for free audio only.
Anyway, let's jump right into this.
So there is a lot of lies out there.
And I don't really think that you have to talk about all the lies up front to recognize the truth.
I think the more that you know what the truth is, the easier it becomes to recognize a lie.
And you are a master at this.
You've even made a whole movie called Hoax about the dishonest media, the way that they mislead people.
unidentified
We are told by the media what the world is.
We are told what is right, what is wrong, what to believe, who to love, who to hate.
I think that the media will gen up controversy to create an environment of discontent.
elijah schaffer
Does the truth even exist right now in our culture and in the media?
Or is there just, I guess, experiential truth?
So my truth, your truth?
mike cernovich
Yeah, my answer diverts a little bit from what people consider conservative orthodoxy.
I believe there are two truths.
One is absolute divine truth, truth from God, truth from nature, truth from whatever you want to call it.
Here's what I mean by that.
If you jump off a roof, there's a truth to that.
There's a thing that's going to happen and you're going to die.
But a lot of truth is socially agreed upon or socially constructed.
So for example, is it the right speed limit to go 55 miles an hour or 75 miles an hour?
And so we agree to all these truths, or even though it's not an absolute objective truth.
So some things can be objectively true and other truths are sort of socially constructed and there's a lot of wiggle room.
And the reason I bring that up is because there's a line going around right now, which is a lie, and they're saying you can't put a value on human life.
And the answer to that is, well, that's just absolutely a lie.
There's something called actuarial tables.
If you apply for life insurance, they're going to say, okay, well, how old are you?
How much do you make?
Here's how much you get when you die.
It sounds morbid, but that's really the way the world is based.
We don't drive around in a bubble.
at three miles an hour to prevent everyone from dying in a car crash.
So it's an absolute lie when politicians say you can't put a price on human life.
You can.
You might not like it.
It might make you uncomfortable to say that you can.
But the truth is that we do put a value on human life every single day and in every single industry and in every single OSHA regulation.
You want to save as many workers as you can, but not at the expense of shutting down all production.
You don't want to have car accidents, but people have to get to and fro.
We do.
So that's what I mean by that's just a lie that we don't put a value on human life.
elijah schaffer
Okay.
And bringing that then, because the truth is hard to understand then, and because sometimes it's hard to swallow, for the viewers, you know, because there's so much misinformation, I want to get your thought and your mind on this.
And for people that don't know who you are or they don't even care, which is fine.
And for those that do know, would realize that you've been on the coronavirus topic since before most people.
In fact, I think, were you the first or one of the first people calling for a travel ban on China?
mike cernovich
Yeah, I think Pesobic was a day early, maybe.
Bannon was, I think, a day early.
But generally January 22nd to 24th was the range where a few people were saying, you know, we got to be in, got to be in travel.
And so Poseobic, so whenever you do these things, I always think it's kind of interesting how people are perceived a certain way.
And I understand why people might not like me.
You know, I've said some rude things and I continue to say rude things and that's fine.
But Poseobic's a Mandarin Chinese speaker and he, you know, so he was talking about it.
I was talking about it.
Bannon was talking about it.
But that was pretty much it, dude.
Three people and then a couple of venture capitalists.
That was it on Twitter.
And then suddenly the narrative shifts to where Vox yesterday deleted a tweet because it had tweeted out January 31st that coronavirus would not be a pandemic.
And they had to delete that because obviously that's wrong.
So speaking of lies and duplicity, we now have the left-wing media saying Fox News killed people.
They lied about coronavirus.
And I'm here like, no, they didn't.
There were a few people on the so-called right, like me and others, talking about it.
And then weeks later, the media shifted its narrative a little bit.
And then about a week later, Fox did.
So the liberal media was maybe at best a week ahead of Fox.
Although Tucker Carlson, who's conservative media Fox News, he's the one who was on it early also.
And he went to Mar-a-Largo and told Trump, hey, you better take this seriously.
So the truth is messy, I guess, is the way I always try to explain to people whenever I think about an issue is the truth is messy because we like simple truths, or rather, we like simple stories.
Therefore, we like lies.
A simple story is liberal media, we were right, conservative media is wrong.
That's what they want to say.
What we want to say is the liberals were wrong about this.
And this shows that Trump was right all along.
And that's just not true.
The truth is that a few people, kind of early Trump adopters, and Vanny DeFair did actually a great article, surprisingly, it was a really good article on this, were on it.
And then conservatives, I call them the flu crew.
They were saying it's just the flu, the flu crew we call them.
And then the liberals kind of came around a little bit.
And then the liberal media kind of came around.
And then about a week later, everyone was on the same page, so to speak.
elijah schaffer
Yeah, because I actually probably was a little more on the flu crew ahead of time because when I saw you calling this stuff out pretty relentlessly, I know that you always have a hunch about things, but I'm not one to just jump on somebody because I follow them about another topic.
And I'm going, what are these guys talking about?
Why are they raising such an alarm about this?
And even now to this day, this is my question.
I'm going to go through a few of these with you.
I read like so many definitive statements about where this virus came from, but you were on this early, plus you're friends with Jack Pesobic, who of course has a major background and tell everything with China.
He lived there, from my understanding, was for a while as well.
Did the virus come from bats or did it come from a lab?
mike cernovich
Like that's okay, so I'm glad you brought that up.
And because again, the truth is messy and the truth is deliberative and the truth is nuanced.
And that's why I'm really glad you framed it that way.
It's like, what is truth?
And truth is messy.
It's deliberative and it's nuanced.
And by that, I mean we don't know where we know it came from Wuhan.
We don't know where it came from.
We don't know if it came from a vat.
We don't, we know, we don't, the bat soup stuff is just, we don't want to go there.
What I think happens, and this is a hypothesis, I don't proof.
What I think happened is that there is a major lab in Wuhan.
And if you go back, you can read these articles from Nature Magazine and other standard fair scientific journals in 2018.
So I think that they were doing experiments and they were using bats, among other things, but their workers weren't being paid well.
So when you dispose of a bat or something like that, that has value as an exotic animal.
So I think it was employee theft.
elijah schaffer
You knew that China didn't value life.
You saw them shutting down.
It gives you a hint.
They knew something was wrong.
They knew something was bad early on.
But it seems like this is what kind of throws me off, though.
You know, California and Los Angeles specifically doing these major shutdowns.
Why are states like California putting these things into place and other states are not?
mike cernovich
Because they're petty tyrants.
California, they tried to shut down gun stores yesterday.
unidentified
Gun stores are not deemed essential under this order, and therefore gun sales at those stores had to end today.
The city of Denver is depriving people of their Second Amendment rights.
mike cernovich
LA County said we're going to go to every gun store and shut it down because they're quote-unquote non-essential business.
unidentified
LA County Sheriff Alex Villa Nueva said gun shops are in the same category as other non-essential businesses and vowed to make sure they close.
Gun shops, nightclubs, bars, and strip clubs.
We're making sure that all these businesses are complying.
We are deploying an additional 1,300 deputies.
mike cernovich
They're going to shut off your water and power if they determine you're a non-essential business.
unidentified
People are scared.
They want to be able to protect themselves.
They want to be able to protect their families.
mike cernovich
He tried to anyway, Carcetta yesterday was going to send the LA County sheriffs to shut down every gun store because it had been declared non-essential.
Luckily, there was a lawyer in there in the office who said, you can't do this.
This is just so unconstitutional and so unlawful.
You can't do it.
But that's all that stopped him, or otherwise, they would have closed down every gun shop.
How in the world are we getting there?
But that's what a lot of these mayors are doing: they're using this as an opportunity to play out their power fantasies.
elijah schaffer
Right, because that's what always threw me off about this is that this is where I want to know who's more dangerous.
Is it the virus, the media, or is it basically the way the government's handling this in the economic fall?
Because what I see in California, specifically in Los Angeles, we've been in a state of emergency for a long time.
I mean, we've had plenty of new diseases develop.
We've had plenty of outbreaks.
We have a massive homeless population, which is a hotbed for pretty much a major pandemic disaster.
mike cernovich
They're not practicing social distancing in Skid Row, which is now not even Skid Row anymore.
It's like blocks and blocks and blocks.
elijah schaffer
Skid City.
mike cernovich
Yeah, Skid City.
Why don't they all have coronavirus?
Why aren't they all dying?
Why aren't they all in the hospital?
Where are the bodies?
I'm just like, show me the bodies.
I'm not seeing them.
And that doesn't mean that they won't happen, but it does mean that rather than this is what I mean.
Rather than, hey, I'm going to use this to shut down gun stores because I'm going to play out my little power fantasy.
AOC wants to open up Rikers Island.
We're in a freaking dystopian novel where you can't work, can't make any money, all the criminals are going to be let out of jail, and you can't buy a gun because of gunshots.
Oh, and your power and electricity might be shut off to you if you're declared non-essential.
That's more dangerous to me than the coronavirus is the statism.
We know how many people, this is again back to truth.
We know how many people die. under totalitarianism.
We have the Holocaust.
We have the Cambodian genocide.
We have the Armenian genocide.
We have Pol Pots Great Leap Forward.
We have the Gulags and the Silva.
We know.
We're not guessing.
We're not saying, oh, well, maybe a few hundred thousand people die under totalitarianism.
No, it'll be millions or tens of millions.
So we already know that too.
That's why as we're deciding what to do about coronavirus, we can't do that in a vacuum and act like that's the only thing happening right now.
elijah schaffer
So then if you had an answer, like just to guns pointed to your head, who's at fault here?
Is the virus the most dangerous?
Is it the media or is it yet to come because of the shutdown of the economy?
mike cernovich
It's our entire fault.
This was we don't have enough ventilators.
We don't have enough masks.
We learned a lot of things that we didn't know.
The way I'm looking at coronavirus right now is that unless the numbers change, we got a, what's called like a stress test.
So if you're about to release a new product, you go, what happens if 100,000 people come to our website?
Does it crash?
You always want to see what's the worst case scenario.
If coronavirus isn't what it was supposed to be, we should thank God because if it is what it's supposed to be, we're not prepared.
We don't have masks, bro.
We don't even make our own antibiotics.
97% of our antibiotics come from China.
When I read that, I was like, it can't be right.
Somebody told me 81% of our antibiotics come from China.
I said, that's absurd, right?
That's absurd.
No, no, it's actually in the 90s.
elijah schaffer
You know, I also realized that the people, like I was actually super disappointed in the American people for the way that I thought of Americans looking out for each other and the way people were buying toilet paper.
Where the hell did that start?
Like, why did people start panic buying products?
Why is there no meat on the shelves?
I mean, really, why is there no food?
And why are people buying all this stuff?
Like, what is that all about?
mike cernovich
Well, we're learning what it's like to be an empire in decline without a central national identity.
People want to draw these analogies to World War II.
And we're not a World War II America anymore.
America is a place that you move to to make a lot of money.
And that's what it's seen as.
And that's what we are.
Just economic units webbed together.
We're not bound together by any kind of shared culture, by any kind of shared religion, by any kind of even shared worldview anymore.
We're all tied together as little economic units.
And everything is about how much money people can make and how much that they can take from other people.
elijah schaffer
And I think that was like systemically put in place.
I mean, that's been going on for decades.
They've been undermining the core values of what America is.
I mean, that's, I mean, that's what I like to fight against too, a lot of that, is because you realize people don't even know what it means to be a part of this country.
And so when I'm watching people fight over a roll of toilet paper, when I'm seeing lines for three hours outside of Costco, three hours.
Like, I think you made a point about this too.
It's like, I didn't realize how fragile our country was to collapse until I realized, imagine if just one store, Costco, went out of business.
Like, the only people are freaking out and dependent on this one store to get supplies during this time.
They're one of the only stores I've seen who's been able to stock appropriately too.
And it's like, if just Costco, one store, one industry, not even an industry, it's like, it's just one business went out.
That would already cause mass chaos and hysteria in the country.
mike cernovich
The way people act, I think, is frankly a joke.
Complete and total joke.
The way people panicked, the way people weren't prepared, the way people aren't looking out for each other in the way that you might expect.
The way people loaded up this bailout bill that is most likely going to be passed by the time this airs.
4 billion Nadler wants for museums in New York.
Just things that you're like absurd.
That are absurd.
You wouldn't really believe.
unidentified
Is that true?
elijah schaffer
There's $25 million in provisions for supplies and wage increases and stuff for Congress.
mike cernovich
Yeah, Congress, this might change, but as of right now, unless enough people scream, then yeah, $25 million for Congress for, you know, slush fund for them to have.
Manushkin's getting, you know, who knows how much, but now they're so-called advisory board, but their meetings aren't public.
So they're exempt from Sunshine Act laws.
They're exempt from freedom of information.
And that's a joke, bro.
This is a complete farce that we're living through right now.
elijah schaffer
You know, with all the lies, with all of the truth that we can't seem to pinpoint, I want to know, we have to go to what's actually happening now.
And I know as of right now, Donald Trump has said that we should try to open the country back up by Easter.
Is this enough?
And what are your predictions for the country in the next, I'd say through December?
I mean, where does this go?
mike cernovich
Well, I don't know where it goes because today the GOP and Trump decided to give massive bailouts to Boeing and Wall Street.
And the conservative media talking point is, oh, no, it's not a bailout.
It's this.
I lived through this in 2008, 2009.
I just have no patience for the lies.
And I thought Trump would be the one guy who would never do it.
Meanwhile, regular people, you're told you can't go to work, you can't run a business, you can't make money.
Oh, and maybe you get $1,200.
Maybe.
Maybe you will.
Maybe you won't.
It's like means tested.
So the way it was, and again, this might change, but this still shows the problem.
Is I think if you made under $79,000, you get it.
If you made over $79,000, you don't get it.
But what if you have your job today making $79,000 and you made $100,000, but you lost your job?
Who should actually get the money, right?
That's how dumb it is.
That's how dumb the country we live in is.
There's no other way to put it.
We live in a dumb country.
We live in dumb times.
We live in a clown world.
And I worry a lot about that.
But maybe that's a conversation for another day.
elijah schaffer
That probably is.
We'll probably have you back on the show.
