Bill Doherty is our guest.
He's the co-founder of the nonprofit group Braver Angels.
And Mr. Doherty, when and why did you start Braver Angels?
unidentified
Well, we started it right after the 2016 presidential election when one of our co-founders, David Blankenhor in New York City, was talking to another co-founder, David Lapp, who were in Southwest, he was in Southwest Ohio about how people were feeling about the election.
The world was ending in New York City.
It was hope for America in Southwest Ohio.
They decided on the spur of the moment to get to get 10 Hillary Clinton voters, 10 Donald Trump voters together for 13 hours over a weekend in Southwest Ohio to see if they could talk with each other, not just about each other.
Asked me to facilitate it.
It was a beautiful, great, it was a great experience, and we decided to keep going.
john mcardle
Asked you to facilitate it.
Why?
What's your background?
unidentified
Well, I'm a family therapist, marriage and family therapist, and have done a lot of community engagement work.
So I know how to work with people who are at odds with each other.
john mcardle
So how many of those sit-downs have you facilitated?
How many people have gone through the Braver Angels program in the time since?
unidentified
Well, 3,500 workshops of various kinds since then, 50,000, 60,000 people.
And so we spread around the country.
And our mission is to have reds and blues in leadership.
