Lighting Up Patriarchy
00:06:52
|
|
| So this is Jonathan McIntosh's How Men Can Help End Sexism. | |
| This is the outtakes from it. | |
| And I find it very peculiar, because if I was talking about a very serious subject, and I'm talking like the oppression of an entire gender, I don't think I'd be doing it in such a light-hearted way. | |
| Let's have a watch. | |
| So where do men fit into all of this? | |
| Can we just go to the beach and wait for women to fix it? | |
| Again, just that's that's not very compassionate of you, John. | |
| I mean, it's just this very blase attitude. | |
| Let's carry on. | |
| No. | |
| Go up at the end of the day. | |
| And that word is patriarchy. | |
| John, the patriarchy is the devil you're supposed to be scaring us with. | |
| If a Catholic priest stood in front of his fucking congregation and was like, ooh, the devil, ooh, isn't that scary? | |
| People would be like, are you taking this seriously? | |
| I mean, you don't look like you're taking this seriously. | |
| Why should I take the patriarchy, or sorry, the devil seriously? | |
| Lightning. | |
| So the patriarchy isn't a big deal. | |
| I mean, this is the great evil you're trying to slay, and you're talking about it as if it's not real, John. | |
| You're talking about it as if it's a joke. | |
| And don't go wrong, I think you're quite funny, man. | |
| I think that's hilarious. | |
| But it also makes me think you don't believe your own bullshit. | |
| And I should do a guitar. | |
| Yeah, I can't see your hands get a bit more. | |
| No, it's just a loot. | |
| It's not as funny. | |
| That's quite amusing, man. | |
| It's nice to see you having a bit of character and personality when you're not pulling that fucking face. | |
| But again, I thought the subject matter that you were talking about was quite difficult. | |
| We're talking about the systematic or systemic oppression of all women in the West, aren't we? | |
| It's just kind of funny. | |
| I mean, it's nothing to be too worried about, I guess. | |
| Just don't take it seriously. | |
| Is that weird? | |
| No. | |
| Not something people do. | |
| It's not something I do. | |
| Look a tad to your left. | |
| Oh my god, would you stop fucking faking this shit? | |
| That's your good side. | |
| This is my good side? | |
| It's not your good side. | |
| But this hunching over bullshit makes you look like some sort of goddamn troglodyte, and it doesn't make you look trustworthy or honest or innocent or anything like that. | |
| Oh yeah. | |
| Oh yeah. | |
| Oh no. | |
| I know. | |
| Dude, where is this charisma normaly? | |
| Normally you're too busy lecturing people. | |
| By the way, I've got some super serious patriarchy thing to talk about. | |
| But then I'm gonna have a laugh about it in my own time. | |
| I mean, it's not like I take this seriously, but you should. | |
| Men shouldn't expect a reward for deciding not to participate in a horrible system of oppression. | |
| A horrible system of oppression, John. | |
| Keep that in your mind. | |
| What those words mean, a horrible system of oppression. | |
| And doom. | |
| Why are you making light of that? | |
| Why is that a joke? | |
| Horrible system of doom. | |
| You don't believe any of this, do you? | |
| You're full of shit. | |
| I can't believe if you thought this was a horrible system of oppression, you would be mocking your own, I don't know what you, I don't want to just call it bullshit because that seems kind of dismissive, but you would be mocking your own thesis on society. | |
| Doom! | |
| Just, are you serious? | |
| Are you honestly mocking what you are saying? | |
| Patriarchy. | |
| Horrible oppression of doom. | |
| I mean, that's what we do when you're talking, incidentally. | |
| It's, I mean, do you want to join the next shitlord stream? | |
| Because I think I could probably get you on there. | |
| Get into feminist bandit sexism. | |
| Do it! | |
| Not that big a deal. | |
| Let's just have a joke about sexism. | |
| I don't think that's. | |
| It's just a white man joking about the oppression of women and sexism in society. | |
| Why wouldn't that be funny, John? | |
| That'll work. | |
| Why not? | |
| Doom, doom, doom, doom, doom, doomy-doom, doom, doom. | |
| Oh, you must be talking about more oppression. | |
| Or the patriarchy. | |
| I'm loving this, though. | |
| This is great. | |
| This is lovely. | |
| This is so refreshing to the normal sort of moralizing and browbeating that you guys do. | |
| You should do more of this. | |
| You really should. | |
| Doomy doom doom doom doom. | |
| See? | |
| Doom doom doomy doom doom doom. | |
| You wouldn't believe this guy's in his mid-3s, would you? | |
| Acting. | |
| Don't quit your day job as a propagandist. | |
| That's exaggerated. | |
| I should just do this the whole time. | |
| How's that? | |
| That's beautiful. | |
| Perfect. | |
| There you go. | |
| Right. | |
| This feels good. | |
| I like this. | |
| I am secretly a Muppet inside of a human spot. | |
| That's not a secret, John. | |
| This is what's happened. | |
| Yeah, we know. | |
| I was from Greg Kinnear on TalkSoup, which I used to watch all the time when I was a kid. | |
| But remember to be compassionate and patient with yourself and keep working at it. | |
| That was good. | |
| Yeah, you might have gotten that. | |
| Yeah. | |
| Yeah. | |
| Do you want to do it once more? | |
| No. | |
| Okay, let's. | |
| Move on. | |
| This is genuinely amusing. | |
| I am in genuine awe that you are actually people with personalities. | |
| You got that. | |
| You had a mouthful of dirt. | |
| Do you want to eat another mouthful of dirt? | |
| No. | |
| No, I don't. | |
| Why aren't you funny in the usual videos? | |
| Why don't you do this? | |
| No one would criticize you for using a bit of humor. | |
| And is it that you think people don't think you would take it seriously? | |
| This guy is awesome. | |
| He's just responding to every single one of my tweets with laugh out loud. | |
| Is it me? | |
|
Tone And Truth
00:02:03
|
|
| I should just rant. | |
| I shouldn't try to read anything. | |
| Yeah, I agree. | |
| You should just run. | |
| You should just get it off your chest. | |
| Except it doesn't look like it makes you very angry. | |
| It doesn't look like there's a rant in there. | |
| It looks like you need to script all this. | |
| Because, again, I don't think you buy your own bullshit. | |
| That's what everyone does. | |
| That's what will get so many more views. | |
| Clearly. | |
| Actually, it probably will. | |
| That's the sad part. | |
| Now start the video over again and watch it on a loop until you get it. | |
| Okay. | |
| Alright. | |
| Never mind. | |
| We'll start with this. | |
| I can't believe that Jonathan McIntosh and Anita Sarkeesian think that we live in a terrible patriarchy that is oppressing women if they take this kind of blasé attitude towards making their videos telling you about it. | |
| It just, I mean, don't get wrong, it's a fun video, and it's a fun thing that they've done here. | |
| But I just don't believe with the sort of flippant attitude that they have to what they are claiming is a terrible system of oppression, that they even think it exists. | |
| I always hate making this judgment, but it really does sound like they're just telling people what they want to hear for money. | |
| And I know that I've been like, well, look, I'm not even sure that's the case. | |
| But maybe it is. | |
| Maybe I was wrong. | |
| And you know what? | |
| Maybe I'm just reading too much into these outtakes. | |
| Maybe I'm just, you know, maybe I don't have context. | |
| Maybe I don't have enough information to really judge whether John actually thinks the patriarchy is something real or something that he can just mock in the outtakes of his video. | |
| But honestly, I really don't know how anyone buys what they're saying. | |
| If they can treat it, if they can treat horrible oppression with such a light-hearted tone. | |
| I don't see why I should take the patriarchy and the systematic oppression of women any more seriously than they do. | |
| And that word is patriarchy. | |
