Learning new information that contradicts existing beliefs is a painful process of removing old information and replacing it with new information.

Like in another way of looking at it at it, you could describe any act of learning information that is not the same information that you currently hold, but would occupy the same space in your brain as being a painful process of removing the old information and then putting the new information in its place, right? So that could be what we describe as brainwashing or just regular learning.
