Alexander Hamilton opposed the First Amendment and believed the government should criminalize speech that lied about or criticized its authority.

But one of the other things about Hamilton is that he did not support the First Amendment. He actually thought that the government should be able to criminalize speech that lied about the government in a critical way. Now, to be clear, he didn't think they should be able to regulate everything. But his point was, if someone's lying about the government or what it's doing or its authority, we have to be able to stop that.
