Ten weeks after Congo declared its independence from Belgium in 1960, General Mobutu Sisi Siko led a coup d 'etat and took over the country, staying in power until a few months before his death in 1997. Siku presided over one of the worst human rights records ever, routinely torturing and murdering political dissidents, reportedly even feeding detractors to crocodiles at his palace.
