Desmond misunderstood the term 'helicopter rides' as a literal activity rather than a death threat reference.
And then Desmond says, helicopter rides, yay! That response came because Desmond thought it was in reference to taking a ride in a helicopter, not a reference to how Pinochet used to take his political rivals in helicopters and throw them out to murder them.
