Revelation is one of the highest profile examples ever of a genre known as apocalyptic literature. The genre took roots in early Jewish writings, and the texts had primarily two functions that they served. The first was to explain why previous prophecies hadn't been fulfilled, and the second was to make a sense of the awful conditions people were living in when presumably God is good and all-powerful.
