All charges against Jussie Smollett have been dropped.
It was only a few weeks ago a grand jury returned 16 felony indictments against the actor, but today all of the charges have been dropped and the story is rather strange.
And confusing.
Earlier today, even CNN was confused, because although they're claiming all charges are dropped, Justice O'Neill still had to forfeit $10,000, and they cited him doing community service as a reason for dropping the charges, so there was still punitive action taken against him, which would kind of imply some kind of guilt.
Chicago police are outraged, as is the mayor calling this a whitewash of justice.
Today, let's take a look at the latest news about Justice Millett and look into the details over whether or not this was or wasn't a whitewash.

Our first story from CBS News.
Charges dropped against Jussie Smollett, attorneys say.
All criminal charges against Empire actor Jussie Smollett have been dropped and his record has been wiped clean, his attorney said Tuesday in a statement.
A judge also granted a motion to seal the case, according to CBS Chicago.
The Cook County State's Attorney's Office called the development a just disposition and appropriate resolution to this case, although it wasn't clear what prompted the move to drop the charges.
Less than two weeks ago, Smollett pleaded not guilty to 16 counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly lying to police about a hate crime.
Smollett has insisted he is innocent and said Tuesday he has been truthful and consistent since the beginning.
The state's attorney's office said, after reviewing all of the facts and circumstances of the case, including Mr. Smollett's volunteer service in the community and agreement to forfeit his bond to the city of Chicago, we believe this outcome is a just disposition and appropriate resolution to this case, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office said in a statement.
Smollett had posted $10,000 bond to be released from jail after he was arrested in late February.
Smollett said he had been truthful and consistent on every single level since day one.
I would not be my mother's son if I was capable of one drop of what I've been accused of.
The story ends by saying on Tuesday, 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement that Jussie Smollett has always maintained his innocence and we are gratified on his behalf That all charges against him have been dismissed.
But he has not been exonerated.
With many questioning why he would have to forfeit his bond, and why community service mattered if he was innocent, it turns out, according to at least one reporter from the New York Times, that is not the case.
This may actually be an admission of guilt.
Julie Bozeman of the New York Times tweets, New from Chicago, Joe Maggots, the first assistant state's
attorney, who made the final decision to drop the charges against Ismolet,
says in an interview, We didn't exonerate him.
Maggots, the assistant state's attorney, said he saw no problem with the police investigation or the evidence against Smollett.
The charges against Smollett were dropped in return for his agreement to do community service, he said, and for forfeiting his bond to the city of Chicago.
The attorney added, Here's the thing.
We work to prioritize violent crime and the drivers of violent crime.
Public safety is our number one priority, and I don't see Justice Smollett as a threat to public safety.
We stand behind this investigation.
We stand behind the decision to charge him.
And we stand behind the charges in this case.
The mere fact that it was disposed of in an alternative manner does not mean that there were any problems or infirmities in the case or the evidence.
Conservative writer Carmine Sabia tweets a statement from Rahm Emanuel saying,
Mayor Rahm Emanuel is actually siding with police against Jussie Smollett. I'm stunned.
He did this all in the name of self-promotion. This is a whitewash of justice.
In a statement posted by Breaking News Live, Chicago Police Department says they had far
more evidence against Smollett hoax attack that they hadn't even released.
We were ready to present it all at trial in a rock-solid case, but can't due to the court's decision.
The Chicago Sun-Times initially reported that this was a plea agreement, but changed their reporting later on when it was made clear that this was actually a dismissal of all charges.
I am not a legal expert, I'm not a lawyer, but this is one hell of a weird story.
A New York Times reporter putting out a statement from the state's attorney saying, no, this is essentially an agreement to forfeit money and this is, it's basically paying restitution.
He's not innocent.
But because they dismissed the charges, Justice Millett is saying he's innocent.
He's not.
Because think of the alternative.
At a press conference following the dismissal of these charges, Smollett's attorney said that it was the Osandiro brothers indicating they had attacked Jussie Smollett, kind of putting it on these guys.
We have video of them at a store buying the ski masks and the red hats.
We have a statement from Justice Millett alluding to the fact that the two people who attacked him were white.
If he was being truthful the whole time, how is it that it was two black men who attacked him?
I'm sorry, it doesn't make sense, and I gotta say, this is confusing and strange.
In a story from February 20th, we can see the brothers buying a ski mask on video.
So, they presumably did attack him or were involved in some capacity, But if Justice Smollett is claiming he's innocent, then what was the motivation of the Osundairos, and will they be charged?
Certainly you'd have to assume if all the charges are dismissed, and Justice Smollett isn't guilty of any crime, then there is someone who is, right?
Or actually, according to the attorney, it seems like they're not exonerating him, but will they come out and say, That he actually did this!
On January 29th, TMZ reported the initial attack, with an image of Jussie Smollett looking like he was somewhat injured.
The story talks about sources directly connected to Smollett, and that two men, both white and wearing ski masks, viciously attacked Jussie as he fought back, but they beat him badly and fractured a rib.
Well, it seems like this part was absolutely not true.
It was initially reported they were both white, coming from sources close to Jussie.
Was TMZ wrong?
Well, according to a statement made by Jussie on Good Morning America, it would seem like he's backing up that claim.
On February 13th, USA Today ran this story.
Jussie Smollett recounts violent attack on Good Morning America.
I saw the rope and I started screaming.
One of his quotes.
It feels like if I had said it was a Muslim or a Mexican or someone black, I feel like the doubters would have supported me a lot more, and that says a lot about the place that we are in our country right now," he said.
They add, in the story, he also said he believes that he would have been taken more seriously if his attackers were Muslim or minorities.
Well, that could only mean he's implying that they were white, as initially reported.
Amber Afi of The Daily Caller tweeted, Smollett's lawyer said today that the two Nigerian brothers
were the ones who attacked him.
Smollett originally claimed the two people who attacked him are white.
Astonishing privilege for Smollett to get out of these charges.
I would have to personally conclude Smollett is lying and he's guilty,
and this is essentially some kind of plea deal.
As I mentioned, Chicago Sun-Times initially called it a plea deal,
but then backed away from that reporting.
But now we have the statement from the state's attorney that this was him effectively paying his restitution.
And because he had already done community service, they were done.
The idea being spread is essentially that it would have been a waste of resources to pursue this case Because even if he was convicted, they were going to give him community service.
So because he already did it, they were just going to say, fine, give up your bond and we'll move forward.
But there is still some more important information.
Federal charges and a federal investigation.
Rob Elgas of ABC7 tweets.
What is also noteworthy about this news conference with Chicago police was that Johnson also said Smollett was responsible for the threat letter sent to Fox Studios in Chicago.
That's an FBI case still ongoing.
It is entirely possible that Smollett receives a federal indictment over the letter he sent to himself.
So maybe he's not out of the woods yet.
But more people are bringing up strange circumstances around this whole issue.
The police are furious.
The mayor has said it's a whitewash of justice.
Why were the charges dropped in the way they were?
Now again, we've heard the explanation.
It was just simpler this way, and it's not a priority.
But there is some other news from the past two weeks.
On March 14th, it was reported by the New York Post, Former Michelle Obama aide tried to intervene in Jussie Smollett probe.
Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx reached out to Eddie Johnson, the police superintendent, after Tina Tchen, the former senior Obama official, emailed the prosecutor saying the Empire actor's family had concerns about the probe.
Chen passed Fox's number to a family member of Smollett, and the ensuing conversations with the relative were later cited by the prosecutor as the reason she recused herself from the probe, according to the paper, which obtained messages from Fox in response to a public records request.
This led to the Chicago Police Union calling for a federal investigation into Kim Foxx's handling of the Jussie Smollett case.
WGN Chicago saying, quite simply, the Chicago Police Union is calling for a federal investigation into the Cook County State's Attorney's actions in the Smollett case, referencing what happened with that former Obama aide.
The FOP wants federal investigators to determine whether Foxx broke the law.
As a final interesting side note, The Daily Beast kind of alluded that this might have something to do with Mark Garagos, who is a CNN commentator, a former commentator, Jussie Smollett's attorney, and was named as a co-conspirator in a federal extortion case involving Michael Avenatti.
They tweeted, Jussie Smollett's emergency hearing comes just one day after his former attorney, Mark Garagos, was identified as a co-conspirator in a federal extortion case involving Avenatti.
I don't like getting all conspiratorial, but we have a weird story on our hands.
How is it that the mayor and the police are outraged, have more evidence, but this is all being dismissed?
How is it that it was only a few weeks ago, 16 felony indictments came down on Justice Millett?
Naturally, many people on the right are saying this is the privilege of being progressive.
You won't face penance.
You won't face any justice or retribution for your bad acts.
That they genuinely believe he did this.
I gotta say, if the state's attorney's assistant attorney is gonna say that this is some kind of restitution, it sounds to me like we have confirmation that Smollett did it.
He's guilty.
They're acting like he isn't because they got the charges dismissed.
But let's go back to the statement from Joe Maggots, who says that they didn't exonerate him.
You know, it always feels like the privileged elites, the wealthy, they get away with whatever they want.
There are a lot of people who want to claim that it's race-based or identity-based, and I'm gonna have to say, when we look at this story, at least in my opinion, it's class-based.
If you are a super wealthy celebrity, you will get away with a crime, even when the mayor himself Calls it a whitewash of justice, but we'll see what happens.
The FBI investigation is apparently still ongoing, so let me know what you think in the comments below.
We'll keep the conversation going.
