Patreon just doesn't seem to learn.
They went through this crisis last year with the banning of Lauren Southern.
But a lot of people said, well, you know, Lauren Southern did go into the Mediterranean and do that activist kind of stuff, so it's a tough spot.
Now, Sam Harris, famous podcaster and neuroscientist who had the 13th largest patron account, has abruptly deleted his account, issuing a statement to fans and followers that because of the banning of certain people, he would no longer be using the service.
We are also now seeing many people who are apolitical being negatively impacted.
People posting on Reddit saying they don't even make political content but they're losing patrons.
Because people have multiple interests.
Some people who support Sargon support gamers and other creators and artists.
And they've pulled out their support for people who are not related to this.
But the collateral damage gets worse.
Many of you who follow me know that in response to the banning of Sargon of Akkad, I launched a Subscribestar account.
I have not been banned by Patreon.
I did this because I wanted to diversify where my income streams come from out of fear.
That Patreon could snap their fingers and terminate my income because they don't like my brand.
Well, far-left activists decided to target Subscribestar over one person.
There were dozens of creators on Subscribestar, many who are apolitical, who have now lost their income because these activists are so desperate to cause harm to Sargon of Akkad that they've actually damaged the careers of dozens of innocent people, people who are unaffiliated with any of this.
But it makes me wonder.
Why is it that these activists weren't targeting Patreon in the first place?
I mean, Sargon of Akkad has been on the platform for years, as have many other content creators.
It just seems like this is actually about something else.
But now we're seeing people unrelated to any of these events, unaffiliated, expressing their outrage, most notably on the Patreon subreddit.
So today, let's take a look at why Sam Harris pulled out, I want to show you some of the hypocrisy of Patreon, which makes me believe the banning of Sargon of Akkad was a targeted effort, was politically motivated, and I want to show you some of the comments from people who have nothing to do with this and why they're angry too.
But before we get started, please head over to TimCast.com forward slash donate if you would like to support my work.
There is a monthly donation option, there's cryptocurrency, I have a P.O.
box, and there's also a shop where you can buy clothing that I have actually designed myself.
I will not be promoting Patreon or any other service at this point, So if you want to support my work, this is the best way to do it.
On Twitter, Sam Harris published this statement last night.
Dear Patreon supporters, As many of you know, the crowdfunding site Patreon has banned several prominent content creators from its platform.
While the company insists that each was in violation of its terms of service, these recent expulsions seem more readily explained by political bias.
Although I don't share the politics of the banned members, I consider it no longer tenable to expose any part of my podcast funding to the whims of Patreon's Trust and Safety Committee.
I will be deleting my Patreon account tomorrow.
If you wish to continue sponsoring my work, I encourage you to open a subscription at samharris.org slash subscribe.
As always, I remain deeply grateful for your support.
Wishing you all a very happy New Year, Sam.
Now, Patreon would have you believe it was not politically motivated.
Sargon said a slur.
Therefore, he must be banned.
He broke the rules.
Even though the rules do say on Patreon.
Even though Jack Conte himself told me, yes, I understand that's what it says on the website, but we do take your whole brand into account.
If Sargon had known that was a rule break, he wouldn't have done it.
In fact, If Patreon issued a warning saying, because of this, you are on notice, I'm pretty sure Sargon would have said, okay, I won't do it again.
Instead, income gone.
And when Sargon went to Subscribestar, activists targeted that platform.
A private, independent business that had nothing to do with Sargon of Akkad is now damaged because activists don't like Sargon.
There were innocent people, uninvolved, who were raising money on Subscribestar who have lost their incomes.
unidentified
Why?
tim pool
Because activists don't like Sargon.
They don't care if they hurt innocent people.
But I have reason to believe that the banning of Sargon of Akkad was actually a targeted effort by Patreon.
Don't ask me why, I don't know, but maybe they just don't like him.
And this is coming from something that Eric Weinstein actually posted.
He tweeted, we need to talk about Patreon and what appears to be a common move to create
frameworks to selectively ban those who are not woke compliant.
This is a full flip where trust and safety means neither.
The effect is to make it impossible to have adult discussions on platforms.
He tweeted, The Patreon platform banned Carl Benjamin without warning for using offensive words off platform.
I then used their own search engine and found the following.
Patreon allows them on platform.
I call BS.
This is now about selectively harassing users' livelihoods and reputations.
I cannot show you what was actually searched for because Patreon might then claim I'm using the racial slur.
Suffice it to say that if you go on Patreon and type in racial slurs, you will find them actually targeting people.
So it's pretty weird then, isn't it?
That Patreon was able to find this small, obscure channel, find this livestream where an hour into it, Sargon makes a statement, he's trying to make a point, and he uses the slur.
Albeit, I don't think it was wise, and I don't agree with his use of it, but I understand what he was trying to do.
They were able to take this out-of-context statement to ban Sargon from their platform, even though it doesn't violate their rules.
Yet, they can't actually police their own platform.
None of these people at Patreon thought to do a search of racial slurs?
I find that extremely hard to believe.
So in my opinion, this was targeted.
Someone at Patreon does not like Sargon.
Well, now it is biting them in the ass, because they just lost their 13th largest Patreon account, Sam Harris.
They are now losing Dave Rubin and Jordan Peterson, who are talking about launching their own platform.
And they are very likely going to lose me and many others.
I am actively trying to move people off Patreon and to other places so that I can eventually shut down Patreon.
But admittedly, They've essentially got us in a jam.
Because I can't snap my fingers and shut off my income.
And that's the problem.
It shouldn't be that way.
Patreon should simply handle financial transactions.
They shouldn't be hunting down users on obscure channels to find out-of-context statements to ban them for.
But I'll tell you what.
The other reason I think this is targeted is because Antifa still, to this day, actively fundraises on Patreon.
They have been listed as domestic terrorist organizations by Homeland Security.
You'd have to think that groups that glorify violence, which is against their rules, that have been listed as terrorists, which is also against their rules, you'd think they'd be banned.
But no, they aren't banned.
They still actively fundraise, even after a week.
It's not like they don't know about this.
I am not going to be showing their accounts, because then Patreon will just feign ignorance and say, oh, we didn't know, now we're gonna ban them, oh, if only we knew.
But that's absurd.
It's absurd because they dug into the deepest corners of the internet to take out Sargon.
Now look, obviously, It is possible, and is believed, that people sent this video to Patreon and said, here's the timestamp, this is proof.
But that would mean that Patreon does nothing to police its own platform.
That they just wait for someone to send them a link with evidence to take out Sargon, but they can't actually do a simple search of their own platform?
As if they don't know their platform is rife with racial slurs.
I find that extremely hard to believe.
What Sargon said, I don't agree with, but clearly he was using it in an abstract way to try and make a point.
That's very different from what you can actually find when you search Patreon.
But now let's take a look at what some people who have nothing to do with this are saying, because I was actually interested to find that there are certain people who are just what you would call a normie, I suppose, who aren't involved in any of the culture war who are upset over this.
One post on Reddit.
Talked about seeking a Patreon alternative or some way to actively support everyone who gets banned from Patreon.
They mentioned that they don't support any of these people.
However, they are concerned that eventually someone could be banned even when they don't violate the terms of service.
Therefore, alternatives would be important.
One interesting comment I found.
Someone said, I lost a lot of patrons after this and my Patreon doesn't even have anything to do with politics.
And on the front page of the Patreon Reddit, you can see they've posted Notch's statement, where he says he will no longer be supporting Patreon.
They've got Matt Christensen, his video about Patreon.
There's one post saying, I've stopped supporting all creators on Patreon.
One post says, time to stop using Patreon forever if you support free speech.
They have a story about Subscribestar getting shut down.
The sentiment is not unanimous.
Not everyone on the subreddit supports Dave Rubin, Peterson, Notch, or Sargon, or any of that.
But there is a debate happening where people who are unaffiliated, who have nothing to do with this, are wondering why they've lost patrons, are concerned that Patreon is using heavy-handed tactics, which is causing ripple effects across Patreon, which is damaging to everybody.
And I can attest, personally, That there are many people who have nothing to do with politics who have lost income.
Because they've told me.
People who make movie reviews.
People who make game content.
And I will also add, I have cancelled my patronage to other creators on the site because I don't want to give them money anymore.
Who would have thought that it would have been Sargon of Akkad, the digital martyr, that sparked this massive outrage?
But I'll end with one more point.
The more you create a hole in the market by banning more and more people, the more you make yourself irrelevant.
PayPal, Stripe, they've shut down Subscribestar.
Well, now you've got people with a real vested interest in creating an alternative, something to compete with PayPal and Stripe.
Because if you turn business away and the service is required by many people, don't be surprised when the competition starts to emerge.
The more links in the chain that are broken, the more people will start forging other chains.
Patreon wants to ban people.
Don't ask me why.
I believe it's targeted.
I believe it's politically biased.
It could be because Stripe and PayPal pressured them.
And if that's the case, then Patreon is in a losing position.
And someone is going to make those payment processors to actually fix this problem.
When Patreon banned one person, actually it was several people, but this was the final straw, a lot of people moved to Subscribestar.
Activists then decided to shut Subscribestar down because they don't like one person.
So what's going to happen?
Alternatives will be made.
The intellectual dark web types and the periphery are not without resources.
Jordan Peterson, Dave Rubin, Notch, for instance.
They're not poor people.
They have the resources to fight back, and that's what's happening.
Because now, Dave Rubin and Jordan Peterson published a video talking about an alternative they're going to build, and hopefully it works.
But I'll say this, the last thing I'll say before signing off for today on this video, If you're supporting me on Patreon, then move over.
You can become a channel member on this channel by clicking the join button just below the video, or you can go to TimCast.com slash donate.
I can't just snap my fingers and turn off my income on Patreon, but I will.
And I am planning to shut down this Patreon account as soon as possible.
And maybe I'll just snap and just get rid of it immediately.
This can't keep happening.
They are hurting innocent people who have nothing to do with this when they take actions like this.
The ripple is felt across the site.
I did not break any Patreon rules.
Yet I have lost over 600 patrons because of the banning of Saga Navakad.
That means Patreon does not care, they don't know what the ramifications of this is going to be, and they don't apologize, and they don't try to do right by their community.
And that means Patreon has become a terrifying and awful platform to use, and I am doing everything in my power to shut it down as quickly as I can.
But let me know what you think in the comments below.
We'll keep the conversation going.
This is a huge escalation of the culture war.
Because banning Sargon for what he did, and how they banned him, shows that they're trying to push the line as far as possible.
But I'll tell you what, as the left platform gets smaller and smaller, and you push more and more lefty people off of that, well they're gonna go somewhere else.
And eventually it'll be just you, standing by yourself on the far left, And you'll be alone, because you've pushed everyone away.
The more Patreon, the more Twitter, the more these platforms do this, they are just banning people into their own irrelevance.
So again, let me know what you think in the comments below.
We'll keep the conversation going.
