Axis Mundi: A New Life Begins
00:02:31
|
|
| Axis Mundi | |
| Axis Mundi In 1966, my father arrived on the mainland from Maui. | |
| His first home in California was a two-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles. | |
| He was a college freshman at Cal State LA, but rather than living in a dorm with other people his age, he lived with his grandmother, his mother, his sister, brother-in-law, and two nephews. | |
| Seven people, four generations, all trying to make a life in a new place. | |
| A childhood friend was attending Chapman University in Orange. | |
| Dad decided to visit her, making a 30-mile drive from L.A. | |
| to the heart of Orange County. | |
| As he tells it, once he got off the freeway in Orange, he tensed up. | |
| It's Orange County, he told himself. | |
| Not the kind of place a person of color wants to get pulled over. | |
| Drive the speed limit. | |
| Don't swerve. | |
| Keep your eyes forward. | |
| Although he was new to the Southland, word had reached as far as Maui that Orange County was an extremely conservative place. | |
| One not so welcoming to those who looked a little different. | |
| As someone who grew up in a predominantly Asian American community in Hawaii, it was the first time he was in a white majority space, and he was afraid. | |

| I know a paywall isn't something you want to see, and I get it. | |
| But I poured my heart and soul into making this docuseries and we're an indie podcast. | |
| We're self-funded, self-produced. | |
| We do everything we can on our own to do this work. | |
| And so it's a nominal fee and your contribution will help us make more of these docuseries, continue to do our show a couple times a week. | |
| Thanks again. | |
