Straight White American Jesus - The Orange Wave Ep. 3: From the Goldrush to the Tea Party Aired: 2022-05-10 Duration: 02:31 === Axis Mundi: A New Life Begins (02:31) === [00:00:00] Axis Mundi [00:00:08] Axis Mundi In 1966, my father arrived on the mainland from Maui. [00:00:38] His first home in California was a two-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles. [00:00:41] He was a college freshman at Cal State LA, but rather than living in a dorm with other people his age, he lived with his grandmother, his mother, his sister, brother-in-law, and two nephews. [00:00:52] Seven people, four generations, all trying to make a life in a new place. [00:00:58] A childhood friend was attending Chapman University in Orange. [00:01:01] Dad decided to visit her, making a 30-mile drive from L.A. [00:01:05] to the heart of Orange County. [00:01:07] As he tells it, once he got off the freeway in Orange, he tensed up. [00:01:11] It's Orange County, he told himself. [00:01:13] Not the kind of place a person of color wants to get pulled over. [00:01:17] Drive the speed limit. [00:01:19] Don't swerve. [00:01:20] Keep your eyes forward. [00:01:22] Although he was new to the Southland, word had reached as far as Maui that Orange County was an extremely conservative place. [00:01:28] One not so welcoming to those who looked a little different. [00:01:32] As someone who grew up in a predominantly Asian American community in Hawaii, it was the first time he was in a white majority space, and he was afraid. [00:01:40] Hello.
