In
the Trenches with Teddy Daniels.
I grew up a dream of being a cowboy and loving the cowboy ways.
Pursuing the life of my
high-riding heroes I burned up my childhood days I learned all the rules I'm a modern-day drifter Don't you hold on to nothing too long Just take what you need From the ladies,
believe them With the words of a sad country song My heroes have always been cowboys Cowboys
are special.
With our own brand of misery For being alone for too long To die from the cold In the arms of a light man Knowing well That your best days are gone Picking up hookers Instead of my pen,
I let the words of my youth fade away.
Old worn-out silence and old worn-out memories, but no one and no place to stay.
My heroes have always been cowboys, And they still are, it seems Sadly in search of And one step in back of themselves And their slow-moving dreams Sadly in search of And one step in back of
themselves And their slow-moving dreams Alright folks, welcome to In the Trenches with Teddy Daniels.
Got a special episode for you today.
That was Willie Nelson, my heroes have always been cowboys.
Folks, I met Willie Nelson back in 1998.
I was a cop and he was doing a concert.
And I was providing security at that concert on duty as a police officer.
Then he had to leave, and I had to shut down traffic on a four-way highway.
And his bus had the stagecoach and the horses painted on the side.
And in rope, it read, the red-headed stranger.
So I stopped traffic, this four-lane highway.
I get out.
I got cars stopped in every direction.
Here comes Willie's bus down to make the turn to get on the highway and it stopped.
Willie Nelson got off that bus, came over and shook my hand and thanked me.
Folks, they don't make them like Willie Nelson anymore.
They really don't.
Love the guy.
I've loved him ever since I was a kid.
Listened to his music growing up.
Listened to his music as an adult.
Now that I got a little gray, still listening to Willie.
But there's somebody else.
There's another Nelson that I started listening to.
And lo and behold, Twillie Nelson's granddaughter, Raelynn Nelson.
Let me tell you, ball of fire, ball of energy, incredible performer.
And folks, let me tell you, she brings it.
Okay?
Raylan Nelson Band.
They bring it.
They have an edgy side to them, which trust me, folks, I can learn to appreciate, and I do.
You know what?
Let's run.
I want to run one of their songs.
Let's run this.
Can't breathe, I'm so smokin', I'm so hot and I keep talking But
I was a sucker for your kissing So I took a shot and missed And now my brother's really pissed And says he's coming after you He's coming after you, boy He's coming after you He ain't gonna stop until you I'm
sick of emotions since I lost your emotion, and it caused a big commotion, too.
You move on high, I've gotten by my body, forgotten it.
He's long enough, he's shotgun and he's coming after you.
He's coming after you boy, he's coming after you.
Me ain't gonna stop, I'll tell you through.
Well, I guess it's time to finally give the devil what he's doing.
He's coming after you boy, he's coming after you.
Guys, how can you not get down how can you not get down to that?
I'm telling you.
Well, folks, you know what?
Not everything is everybody's cup of tea, but it's mine.
It's my cup of tea.
So, folks, we are honored, honored, I'm honored, to have Raylan Nelson join us on In the Trenches with Teddy Daniels.

This is really cool.
So I get to bring to you right now, Ray Lynn Nelson.
Folks, here's that special guest I've been telling you about.
This is a woman I've been following for some time.
Love her music.
Was also a huge fan of her grandfather.
Raelynn Nelson.
Raelynn, welcome to In the Trenches with Teddy Daniels.
Thanks for joining us today.
Hey, Teddy.
Thanks for having me.
I appreciate you letting me get the word out about the single and everything.
You're just, you're really great.
Thank you.
Hey, absolutely.
So, tell our folks a little bit about yourself.
Okay.
Well, I guess the coolest part about me is my grandpa is Willie Nelson.
And so I've always, when I was born, he was already a superstar.
You know, he was already a country music superstar.
I was about five years old, four or five, I guess, when I realized he was different than my other grandparents.
We were all sitting around, a bunch of us in the family and the band and the crew and stuff were sitting around table eating at a restaurant and then all of a sudden my grandpa got swarmed by a whole bunch of people and his security obviously came in and saved him but he was escorted out and it all happened so quickly to me.
My dad picked me up and held me in his arms.
And I remember everybody being kind of scared and nervous for a second, and that's the first time I was like, oh, this is different.
This is weird, you know?
And of course, he was always on the road, still is when he can be these days.
But he was like three weeks on, two weeks off kind of guy before the pandemic hit, you know?
And so my whole life, he's always been that way.
And he would just, when we'd talk, he'd say he's working.
My mom was working at a radio station, I guess, like 1981 or something.
And my dad was on the bus with Papa Willie and they drove through.
And stopped at this radio station, I guess, to promote a show or just to see one of Papa Willie's old radio buddies or something.
And my dad met my mom there.
So they kind of started family here after that.
And of course, my dad died in 91.
He was Willie Nelson Jr.
And he was a singer and songwriter as well.
But anyway, so I guess I had babies and I was nursing them.
And so I stuck at home with three little babies and animals and going through a breakup with my husband and just started writing songs and trying to figure out where to write them.
I ended up meeting JB, my music partner, through a mutual friend.
And he said he had a place where I could come and just record the demos I had.
So I started doing that, and by the end of the first time, he was like, we should put a combo together.
Let's write some country rock songs.
All of his background is rock.
And I was like, yeah, let's do it.
I was down to do anything that wasn't...
I just needed to get out from being a mom after I was done nursing.
I need something else other than just being a mom.
So I just wanted to write songs.
And so we started then.
And that was about 10 years ago, honestly.
So it's been that, you know, like you said, 10-year overnight success thing.
I don't...
It was so funny.
You said something in your email and you were like...
You said something like, does he think I've made it?
What is your definition of make it?
Alright, so here's my definition.
It doesn't have to do with fame.
It doesn't have to do with money.
It has to do with being happy with what you're doing and knowing that what you're doing is what you were supposed to do in life.
To me, that's the definition of making it.
Yeah, I agree with that.
I think my view of success obviously is Super stardom, because that's what my grandpa has, right?
And there's very few people that will ever reach that level of super stardom, right?
But to me, he's just famous like anybody else that's famous.
But it's still so famous.
It's next level stuff.
It's next level stuff.
I actually saw a video of Snoop Dogg talking about your granddad.
When they were smoking weed and playing dominoes.
And how Snoop couldn't keep up with Willie.
Just couldn't keep up with him.
And then they were in the van and they went to get KFC the whole nine yards.
And what is your take on your grandfather being known for that?
You know, with the whole cannabis and marijuana thing.
Because it is kind of funny.
It is funny.
And also, cannabis heals too, you know?
And I think it's helped a lot of people who've had seizures and stuff.
It's very calming to the nervous system.
It helps inflammation.
There's all these medical, medicinal stuff.
As far as, that has nothing to do with getting high.
It's just like a bonus for it if you decide to smoke it instead of using CBD in some way, you know?
Well, I'll hook up with you offline about that.
I worked in the industry for several years.
And I'm in full agreement with you with that.
And, you know, we do a lot of culture and we do a lot of politics on this show.
And I really wish that this would be the one thing that both sides could come together on.
Fortunately, the left is fighting the right, the right is fighting the left, and that's the one thing that I really think could bring a lot of people together.
I agree.
I agree.
And another fun thing about it is as a smoker, like a cigarette smoker, I try not to smoke too much.
Obviously, it's not good to smoke.
And hemp cigarettes help me not smoke tobacco.
Even though it's smoking, it's not smoking tobacco, which you're trying to wean yourself off of.
And I know there's vapes and things, but there's all these studies that that might not be very good either.
You know, so there's other ways it helps.
And not just in, you know, what it is as itself in that sense, you know?
I was a part of the Tennessee Cannabis Coalition here in Nashville.
A friend of mine, Cecily, was heading it up, and she had some health issues.
I actually need to reach out to her and see what she's doing.
Because right before the pandemic, we were really going hard and strong.
And then, of course, with that and her health, it just really kind of took a plunge.
Absolutely.
Hemp is huge here now, and our hemp laws are very lax.
We can have the highest of THC that you can have in your hemp.
So it feels like it's a step in the right direction, but being in the Bible Belt, there's a stigma with marijuana that...
There is.
There is.
And that's unfortunately an old school stigma that's still around.
It's been around for years now.
And I truly think that your grandfather was one of the ones to help start breaking that stigma and kind of making it more mainstream, which is an awesome, awesome thing.
And he's so good at talking about it.
There was a video of him, you could probably find it on YouTube, of him walking out of a courthouse and him talking about him getting busted and why he thought it was wrong, you know, that it could be helping people, that we could be taxing it.
I mean, it was just like so good.
And this was like years ago, years and years and years ago, 70s maybe, 80s.
So you've actually got Fist City coming out, a Loretta Lynn song that you're covering.
Tell us about that.
Yeah, it's funny because I guess a lot of people don't know that song, but me, I guess growing up with the country music all around, that was one of the hits that I was always listening to, and I love that song.
So to me, it's huge, but a lot of people don't know it.
But it's one of my favorites of Loretta.
I really connected with her.
She was a mom, obviously, you know, and just sang simple stuff.
And I really think she had some punk rock lyrics for her time.
And this song being one of them, some of the lyrics are so great.
Grab you by the hair of the head and lift you off of the ground, you know?
Somebody even said, I think you might get canceled for doing this song.
Well, I'll be honest with you, Raelynn.
You do some edgy stuff.
I love Weed and Whiskey that you do.
Love that song.
And let's talk about some of the collaborations that you did with Wade Jennings and Jelly Roll.
I saw some of that online.
Tell us about that.
Okay, so Jelly Roll happened with Josh Wolf, the comedian.
So we do a podcast called Music is Funny.
It comes out on Wednesdays, and it's musicians talking to comedians about music and comedy.
And Josh Wolf, who lived here in Nashville for a few years, but he's now in Vegas.
He moved away.
It was too cold here for his wife, Beth.
But he did these shows every once a month.
It was like...
Every last Sunday of the month, and Jelly Roll was one of his music guests that came on, and he had just released a cover of Creep and needed a gal to sing the song, so I jumped on and did that for him.
The song was low for me.
They brought it up a key, which was really sweet, and I was super nervous to do that with him there.
Especially at Zany's, because it's not a music venue, it's a comedy venue, and it's not set up in a music venue way, so they're It's like karaoke-ing, which you don't have anything coming back at you singing.
You just have to trust that what you're doing is sounding okay.
But I was really glad I got that opportunity to be able to do that with Jelly Roll.
And Jelly Roll is the real deal.
He's very cool.
Yes, I can figure that by seeing some of the stuff on him that he's just a real down-to-earth, decent guy.
Good dude, yes.
And Wei Jennings, same thing.
He's a cool guy.
We got to do our grandpa's tune, I Can Get Off On You.
I caught the cocaine song when I was little because I wanted to sing that.
But it's one of my favorite of theirs together that they did.
It's got a great melody and just the premise of the song is cool.
And so Wade and I did that one for Country Rebel and we've been doing a couple shows together and I think there's going to be more.
That we do together.
And hopefully we can record a version of I Can Get Off On You if he does it the way we do it, because we do it a little bit Raylan Nelson band style.
Nice.
Now, for those that don't follow your music, what would you describe your style?
Because it is unique.
It's a very unique style.
How would you describe that?
So, I mean, honestly, I was raised with country in my...
That's basically it, in gospel music.
My mom's a super holy roller, so it was a lot of gospel and Christian music, too.
But mostly just old country.
So that is...
The country you hear in there is me, and then I have a punk rock band, basically.
They just are...
Garage Rock Punk Ramones Cheap Trick.
I think I was lucky enough that Rolling Stone talked about one of our first videos we put out years ago and they called it Cheap Trick with Loretta Lynn You know, like backing her, right?
So it's kind of, it's country melody.
It's like the bones and the skeleton of the song is all country, but then it's just got loud guitars and me wailing the lyrics on top of it.
And I saw that Spin Magazine did an incredible review on you and your band.
Yeah, that was really cool.
That really helped a lot.
Who knew that people still read magazines, you know?
I know, I know.
It really helped.
And that was really cool and just opportunistic and just happened to meet the guy who loved the music.
And he had done Papa Willie's...
He had written about Papa Willie and Spin right before he made it big in 73 or something.
And he was like, I just know I can do the same with you.
And I'm like, from your mouth to God's ears, yes, you know?
And it did.
It worked.
We got a lot more followers from that and recognition from the industry.
And that's nice because I'm an independent artist.
We're an independent band.
It's very important to me that we are a Raylan Nelson band.
It isn't just me as a solo artist because I cannot make that sound by myself, you know, or with studio musicians here in Nashville.
I need the real deal garage rock guys.
And they've stuck with me for a long time.
And except for the drummer, we've had like 14 drummers.
We keep losing them to better or better.
We keep losing them to more famous people, which kind of happens here in Nashville.
And there's a lot of people here for that, you know, to make money for music.
But so anyway, yeah, I'm very lucky to have those guys stick with me this whole time and to trust and, you know, Believe that the songs are good.
And J.B. helps me write the song.
You know, he obviously rocks them up.
That's why I'm like, I write the song and then he'll rock it up and change a lyric on me or something if it doesn't fit his phrasing.
Nice.
You know?
So you talked about going through 14 different drummers.
What other challenges have you faced since getting into the industry?
So you just completely took this jump, said, this is what I want to do.
I'm sure you've faced challenges along the way.
What were some of the hardest things that you ran into?
And people, well, most of the time we get, I wasn't expecting that.
I guess they're expecting more like Kacey Musgraves or, you know, so I guess not fitting into the right spot to be able to open up for just anyone.
Because to me, I think it's country and rock.
We should be able to open up for either one, but maybe just a little too country for rock and maybe a little too rock for country is kind of I guess that's a challenge for me.
I know that not any label has wanted to take a chance on it.
They've always been like, what about you being a solo artist?
And I'm like, no, I want to be a band.
My grandpa has always had a band.
And I know Willie Nelson and family, but it's Willie Nelson family band.
That is his band.
He will not play without them.
You know?
And I wanted that.
I wanted that life.
I wanted the life my grandpa sang about when he wrote On the Road Again.
You know?
I wanted that.
And I knew you had to have a band.
And it's just another family that you have.
And I'm really lucky to have a band that wants to play with me.
And what was your other challenges?
Yeah, the challenges.
The challenges that you faced when you took this blind jump into this.
Yeah.
I kind of said that a little bit.
It's hard to keep a good drummer.
There's very few great drummers, and it's hard to keep them.
And, you know, we've lost one to Gene Simmons Band.
We lost one to Steve Earle.
We lost one to...
Why can't I think of his name?
Steven...
The big guy.
Steven Aerosmith.
Why can't I think of his name?
Oh, Steven Tyler.
Thank you.
Steven Tyler, he did a country band, and we lost one of them, and we just kept losing them to better people, and then just getting fill-ins.
A lot of the, when I say 13 drummers, a lot of those drummers were fill-ins for those guys when they were trying to do both at the same time, and then just ended up having to quit ours.
But right now, Nathan Womack, who is Tommy Womack, so I don't know if you know Tommy Womack.
He's a great singer-songwriter.
And his son Nathan has been playing with us for about a year now and he's great.
He's young and hopefully he doesn't leave for somebody big.
You know what?
That's not a bad problem to have because it shows that you have the right people around you.
It shows that you have the right musicians in your band that Other people want them.
So that's not a real bad problem to have, is it?
Yeah.
Well, there you go.
If you want to get the best drumming gig of all time, just come drum with us for a little bit.
Raylene, where can folks find you?
Where can they follow you?
I will share your Facebook link on my page, and we'll put it in the description of this episode.
But where can folks look you up and hear your music?
I know you're on iTunes.
Where else are you?
Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, all the digital media.
What is it?
The digital distributing platforms.
Anything you can think of.
We're there.
YouTube.
And we have a cool...
We have a fun lyric video coming out and a music video coming out in just a few weeks, too, for it.
And, yeah, Raelynn Nelson Band and all the...
Instagram, Twitter, TikTok.
I'm trying to get my TikTok followers up.
It's very low.
My TikTok followers are very, very low.
And yeah, Facebook.
So when are you going on tour again?
When are you coming back to Pennsylvania?
I know you were just in Hershey last year.
I was unable to make it, but I got to get you back to Pennsylvania.
When are you coming back here?
I think there's talks of something happening in August there.
So August 18th, I think, the weekend, I don't know if it's that exact date, but the weekend around that, there's talks of us coming to Mr.
Smalls in Pittsburgh.
Okay.
I'm not sure if that is happening or not.
I probably shouldn't promote it yet.
No, that's all right, because here's the thing.
I'm going to make sure you have all my contact info.
When you come to Pennsylvania, you've got to let me know, all right?
You've got to let me know because we will blow that up for you.
We will throw that out there.
I just want a VIP ticket.
That's it.
That's all I want.
Oh, yeah.
You're in.
Just let me know and I'll put you on the list.
Anytime, by the way.
Awesome.
I am playing at the Glen Campbell Museum in Nashville, if anybody's in Nashville.
Oh, okay.
That's March 17th, and then I'm supposed to, well, I am.
I'm doing the Wine, Weed, and Whiskey Tour with Annie Brobst in Massachusetts area, and that starts on April 20th, and it goes through April 24th, and it's all around Massachusetts.
All right.
See, that's not too far from me, so I can get up to see you in person.
I'm all the way to the northeast corner of Pennsylvania, so...
Massachusetts is actually closer for me than Pittsburgh.
Wow.
Yeah, so that will work.
I get to come up and hear some live Raylan Nelson band music, and that's what I'm excited about.
That's what I'm excited about.
Ray Lynn, let me tell you, I am so excited for your new song to come out.
I encourage everybody who watches this show, we're going to post the links in here.
Go follow her.
You guys are missing out.
I'm telling you.
Guys, I sit in front of this camera every day.
You know I'm a country boy.
You know I'm a redneck, okay?
This is the music that I like.
So, guys, you always ask, hey, Teddy, what do you listen to?
This is it, right here, okay?
Go check Raylan Nelson Band out.
You won't regret it, I promise you.
Raylan, I'm going to give you the final word here.
You know, let me say bye.
Okay, did we cheers yet?
Cheers.
Oh, I don't have anything to cheers.
Wait, hold on.
I got some Diet Coke.
How's that?
That works.
I got water.
Cheers.
That works.
Thanks, Raylynn.
Appreciate you joining us.
Thanks, Kenny.

So, folks, let me tell you, it's a crazy world we live in.

So, what next?
What next?
Guys, I'm still fired up about having Ray Lynn Nelson on the show.
You guys better check out her cover of Fist City by Loretta Lynn.
Folks, you know, when I was a kid, I'd sit on my grandparents' porch with my grandparents, and they'd listen to the old records of Willie, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, who was the other one, Patsy Cline.
Folks, I grew up on this, you know?
And that's why it was so cool for me to be able to have her on here.
Folks, there's no such thing as an overnight success.
Even with her grandfather, as worldly famous as he is, I mean, all you got to do is think of the red bandana and automatically it's Willie Nelson.
Even as worldly famous as he is, you know, she still had to struggle.
Nothing has been handed to her.
She goes out and works for it every single day, not relying on the family name.
You know, I'm sure she could go do the old Willie covers and everything else, but she's moving a different direction, and that's why I respect and I appreciate what it is that she's trying to do.
Folks, you know, you've got to go out there in the world and do your own thing.
You know, nothing's going to be handed to you.
We had a conversation offline that...
Hey, you know, overnight success normally takes about 10 years.
And you heard the conversation, you know, what do I define as a success?
Are you happy doing what you're doing?
Are you doing what you feel God intended you to do in life?
Do you get to do that?
If so, that's a success.
Money doesn't make you a success.
Fame doesn't make you a success.
It's getting up every day, saying, you know what?
I get to go do what I love to do today.
I don't know how many of you folks remember if your teachers even did this in school, where they would go around the room and say, if you could do anything you want to do in life and get paid to do it, what would it be?
Well, let me tell you what.
Ray Lynn, living her dream.
I'm glad she is because she's putting out some great music.
Folks, you like the t-shirt?
I got one.

And folks, last thing I've got to do is I have to talk to you about MAG Breakthrough.
Folks, in case you haven't been able to figure it out, I've got a little bit of a head cold today.
And, you know, it's not from lack of sleep.
Folks, I take...
Bag breakthrough from Bioptimizers every night when I go to bed.
I take two, hit the pillow, and I'm out.
I'm out.
I get a great night's sleep.
I hope tonight, I hope tonight with the stuffy nose and stuff, you know, it doesn't...
It doesn't affect my sleep too much, but I'll tell you what, I'm full of energy when my feet hit the floor in the morning and we take on the day.
Now, Meg Breakthrough has full spectral magnesium.
I stay away from the pharmaceutical stuff.
Folks, it's the pharmaceutical stuff that'll kill you, okay?
Oh, and that's...
I'll get back to that.
The pharmaceutical stuff...
It's what will kill you.

Did you guys see how Trump went out to East Palestine, Ohio?
He's buying Big Macs for everybody.
Folks, as you can tell by looking at me, I'm a Big Mac kind of guy.
For breakfast...
I love their steak, egg, and cheese bagels, but I get them without the egg.
And during this whole fake pandemic, McDonald's wasn't carrying the steak, egg, and cheese bagel.
Guys, let me tell you, I was pissed off every day for about two years.
But, hey, it is what it is.
What are you going to do?
Excuse me.
Excuse me, guys.
See, I told you all I was sick, but you know what?
I still come to work and I still get it done for you.
So, folks, I want to thank everybody for tuning in today.
Make sure you go follow Raelynn Nelson.
Her links will be in the description of this video.
And like I said, it was just really cool having her on.
I'm a fan of hers.
I was always and still am a fan of her grandfather's.
And like I said, if you haven't heard her music, if you haven't seen her perform, she brings the energy, folks.
Really, really, really brings it.
So I wanted to get off the little political stuff.
You guys are tired of politics.
Guys, I do politics every single day on here.
Sometimes it's good to have a fresh face and break the norm and do something a little different.
I had the opportunity to have Ray Lin on, so we got it done.
Folks, I love you.
