Oh, I guess I did a little poll here.
And 17th of March 2020.
And we are going to do a little homeschooling.
Yes, yes, I know.
There were quite a few requests for 80s karaoke.
Because that was an option that I put out there in the world.
Do you want coronavirus updates?
Do you want homeschooling instructions?
Or do you want... We're good to go.
Your kids are home. They have been blown back to you by the chill winds of the Chinese Communist Party's hiding of the true danger of coronavirus and living on a prayer.
Should we do a little karaoke while everyone comes in?
Should we do? Should we do just a tiny bit?
No, it's probably not going to be any fun for you guys.
Wouldn't be any fun for you, I'm sure.
You know, this is serious stuff here.
You know, we do serious stuff in this show.
It's a philosophy show where we deal with, of course, the most essential and important human issues, the education of the young, and 80s karaoke.
Do you guys have favorite karaoke songs?
Do you ever do it? Sing, please.
Sing, please. Do it!
Do it! All right.
Well, just while we're waiting for everyone to gather...
Hey little sister, what have you done?
Hey little sister, who's your only one?
Hey little sister, who's your superman?
Hey little sister, who's the one you want?
Hey little sister, shotgun!
It's a nice day to start again.
Come on, it's a nice day for a white wedding.
Alright, um...
Oh yeah, these lyrics remind me of...
I'm doing a debate.
This... Friday night, 8 p.m.
Eastern Standard Time with J.F. Gariepi, who we're going to talk moral nihilism versus universally preferable behavior, or good versus evil, angel versus devil.
And so his intro speech is going to go something like this.
There is nothing fair in this world.
There is nothing safe in this world.
And there's nothing sure in this world.
And there's nothing pure in this world.
Look for something left in this world.
Start again!
Come on!
It's a nice day for a white wedding!
All right. So that's, of course, I will be available for vocal lessons for children who have their toes caught in mousetraps.
But let's start with...
Some questions about...
It's like seeing my teacher kick back.
And this is an old Judd Apatow show.
I actually kind of liked it. From way back in the day, this was...
Oh, Freaks and Geeks. There's that stringy-haired guy who was the kind of half-cool guidance counselor.
And boy, did I ever get some rage mail from when I made a joke on Twitter years ago about...
No, last year maybe. About why on earth would you take...
Career advice from somebody who ended up as a high school guidance counselor.
Because, you know, the guy who was my high school guidance counselor was kind of pimply, kind of overweight, and stuck in a back office that everybody thought was originally a janitor's closet.
And I remember he had these signs over his desk, like, behind him.
It's like, here are all of the occupations that you will never be able to get into if you don't become excellent at math.
And it was like, tax accountant!
Accountant, actuarial, economist, you know, all things that I wouldn't particularly want to do.
So, um...
Let's, uh...
Get into homeschooling.
Just out of curiosity, are you guys doing homeschooling?
Yeah, don't quit your day job.
Don't worry, I'm not about to become a Billy Idol frontman cover band guy.
Don't worry about it. Don't sweat it.
Um... Yeah, I did a video years ago with Lorette Lynn.
There's stuff concerning homeschooling, but I am not hugely a math guy myself.
I'm okay at it. I sort of give myself a 6 out of 10 on math.
Certainly, my wife's much better at it than I am.
Let's see here. Do you see a state-enforced lockdown coming, Steph?
Not imminently, not imminently.
I will say this, though, that there is indications, okay, well, just while people are gathering in, there are definitely indications that coronavirus is leaving some people with, like, permanent damage.
I did talk about this more briefly last night.
Was it last night? So this is from Business Insider.
I'll just read this off, and then we will get to the homeschooling stuff.
But some people who recover from the coronavirus might be left with 20-30% less lung function and gasping for breath when they walk quickly.
This is according to Hong Kong doctors.
And that's obviously not good at all.
Not good at all.
And I guess I've made it to 54 without any permanent damage or anything other than a tiny bit of tinnitus in my left ear as a leftover from radiation treatment for cancer.
But yeah, people who recover from COVID-19 can still be left with substantially reduced lung functions, the Hong Kong Hospital Authority has found, after observing the first wave of patients discharged after becoming infected by the novel coronavirus.
The doctors made the observation after studying a group of 12 patients who had recovered, rather than as part of a wider-ranging study, found a drop of 20-30% in capacity in two or three out of them.
So, yeah, that's, you know, really, really do what you can to avoid this virus, if you can.
I mean, it's going to be around for a while, and eventually it's going to be like dodging dodgeball with progressively diminishing results.
But, yeah, that's interesting.
I was expecting karaoke.
I'm not impressed. Well...
Am I getting some lag?
Yeah, I dropped a couple of frames here.
If it comes back, I'll drop it some more.
You did miss the karaoke, I'm afraid.
I don't even know if it went live on YouTube, because I never know when this thing starts.
Like, it says on my local streamer, it says, ooh, we're starting it then.
When does it actually pick up on YouTube?
Like, I have no idea.
Anyway... Okay, so I've put together my top ten list of really essential homeschooling stuff.
And I'm just going to go through them.
These aren't in any particular order of importance, and I wanted to get you guys' thoughts on it, if you were homeschooled or if you are homeschooling.
But, you know, for the parents who are at home now, it is...
Important to try and instill a love of learning in your children.
And the first thing that I'll talk about with regards to homeschooling is...
And this audience, I know that you really enjoy learning.
I mean, you come to this channel, which is obviously like sometimes getting your social...
Credit score kicked in the nads by a rabid mule with all the truth bombs that come out.
But I know that you guys are into it, this sort of lifelong learning stuff.
But it is important that you display first and foremost all of the traits that you wish to inculcate in your children.
You have to display them first yourself.
People think that parenting is working on how to interact with your children.
That's not the primary aspect of parenting at all.
The primary aspect of parenting has almost nothing to do with you interacting with your children.
The primary aspect of parenting is the character and behavior that you bring to bear on The issues, right?
That is what parenting is all about.
If you want your children to be good readers, to enjoy reading, they have to see you reading, or they have to see you reading to them.
You have to show the pleasure that you take in reading and then they will absorb that if you want them to negotiate in a peaceful manner for what it is that they want you have to first show them negotiating with your spouse negotiating with them in a peaceful manner for what it is that you want if you want to teach them assertiveness then you know if your food comes cold in the restaurant hey remember back in the day when you used to be able to go to a restaurant so if your food comes cold in the restaurant Then they need to see you sending the food back,
you know, not being mean about it, just saying, you know, sorry, this is not, can you warm this up or get me another one or whatever, right?
So, that is...
Oh, drop frames? Yeah, alright.
Okay, we'll drop down to 60 frames.
It's probably a bit crusty anyway.
I don't know what's going on with that, but let's see if we can drop down to 60 frames.
Can we? Nah, doesn't let me do it.
Excellent! Well, I ain't stopping and starting again, so I guess we'll just...
Struggle through. So, if you want your children to not be influenced overly by their peers, then, of course, you have to not be overly influenced by your peers, right?
I mean, so parenting is the relationship that you have with yourself, and it's the relationship that you have with virtue.
Now, if you have that straight...
Then all is well, right?
If you have that straight, then all is well.
If you don't have that straight, then that's bad, right?
I'm just going to deal with a couple of bots here.
So when it comes to homeschooling, a lot of people think, well, okay, what I want to do, of course, is I want to just get my kids interested in knowledge. is I want to just get my kids interested in And I'm going to sit down with them with a bunch of books and try and get them interested in stuff.
And that is, in my experience, and I've been doing this for, well, quite a long time now, and I think quite successfully.
For those of you who've heard my daughter, she's 11 and loves doing shows with me.
We just went through the Communist Manifesto, and it's a great deal of fun.
And I mean... I get it.
I know she is a smart kid.
But nonetheless, it is something that comes because I have a deep love of learning.
I have a deep love of knowledge.
Now, if you have that, if you have that deep love of knowledge, and that's part of how you live your life, then you will transmit that to your children almost without knowledge.
Any effort whatsoever.
And if you don't have that already, then trying to get your kids to get involved in that stuff is simply not going to work.
So let me just see here.
I'm getting some dropped frames here.
I'm just going to make sure that nothing else is going on in ye olde background here.
Nothing's playing, nothing's rolling, nothing's cooking, nothing's going on there.
So let me just sort that out.
And I don't know.
This one does not let me change the resolution or the frame rate on the fly.
So... That I can't do a huge amount about.
Okay. I'm just going to jump back into the chat window here.
All of that. Yeah, it's funny.
It's exactly the same setup as I had the other day.
Who knows? Let's see here.
Go live. Sorry about all of this.
It's always baffling, you know, what changes from one day to the next.
It says I have an excellent connection.
All right.
Yeah, we're still dropping frames.
Do you think I should I start it again?
It's almost unwatchable. Okay, I'll be back.
Let me start again. Yeah, it's still dropping like crazy.
