Hi everybody, Stefan Molyneux from Free Domain Radio.
I hope you're doing well.
I hope you had wonderful winter solstice slash Merry Christmas slash Happy Hanukkah holidays and that you are gearing up for a truly phantasmagorical New Year's.
Try to get those in, say, before you have children.
My advice to you. | |
So, I just wanted to mention, been a very interesting year, a good year for this, the largest and most popular philosophy show the world has ever seen.
I really want to thank everyone for 2014 and, of course, look forward to 2015.
Thank you for calling in.
Thank you for your criticisms.
Thank you for your feedback.
Thank you for your support.
Now, we have been running some numbers here.
Just wanted to mention that...
There are a very small number of you who actually support the show.
Don't mean to be Mr. | |
Nag, but it's important for you to recognize and realize that it is a fraction of a percentage point of the overall listenership that is actually supporting the show.
I request 50 cents a show.
When you think about it, it's not really that much.
We did 300 shows this year.
And, you know, shows are an hour to an hour and a half usually.
Some of the call-in shows are three to four hours, which we do twice a week.
So... | |
It's really not much. | |
If you say a show is an hour and a half, then we're asking for 50 cents for an hour and a half of pretty in-depth philosophy and self-knowledge, pursuit of virtue and honor in relationships and integrity in business dealings and so on.
That, I think, is quite a lot of value.
I myself have studied philosophy in all of its various forms for 35,000 hours or 3.5 times Malcolm Gladwell's expertise threshold.
So for 50 cents you're getting an hour and a half.
An hour and a half is about the length of a movie once you take out the previews.
So basically you're getting a very in-depth conversation that is about the length of a movie for 50 cents.
That is what I request. | |
That is what the show needs.
So I just wanted to remind you, if you are among the vast majority of people who consume this show without contributing to it, please, please, please put us in your hearts, minds, and pocketbooks this year.
Sorry, if you're under 40, please ask your parents what a pocketbook is.
It's not a kind of nook. | |
Please come to freedomainradio.com slash donate to help out the show.
We need you more than ever.
We cannot survive without you.
We don't do commercials.
We don't do ads for a wide variety of reasons.
The conversations are too in-depth to be interrupted by...
Here's a great shaving cream.
It just doesn't work that way.
I want to always remain sensitive to you, the listeners, not be in the business of delivering you, the listeners, to the advertisers.
I want to be in the business of delivering philosophy to you, the listeners, with your participation, with your feedback.
So for a wide variety of reasons, we don't run ads, which means that it's you or it's no one.
It's your money and support or it's us taking to the sewers to hunt rats.
For sustenance. | |
So everything that we're doing here, of course, you know, takes money.
Nothing comes for free.
There's no such thing as a free lunch, as you all know.
So I would really, really appreciate it if you could help us out, which means going to freedomainradio.com slash donate.
And signing up for a subscription.
It's $10 a month, $0.30 a day to help spread philosophy to millions of people throughout the world.
I genuinely believe that the spread of critical thinking is the most important thing for building the foundation to a peaceful, free, secure and prosperous future for the whole planet.
And there are, of course, groups that I'm not particularly simpatico to that get hundreds of billions of dollars a year.
Governments, of course, through taxes, churches through tithes and other forms of donations.
So asking for a little bit for philosophy is the only way to give philosophy a fighting chance in the arena of world opinion and of world thought.
So I really hope that you will help us out.
It's so, so important. | |
And I would also argue, I mean, I don't really need to tell you this, right?
It's the right thing to do.
When you consume a resource, it's important to provide for the maintenance of that resource.
Don't be a free rider. | |
You know, for people who believe in the free market, integrity, responsibility and paying for what you consume, don't be a free rider.
Don't just take from the amount of energy and work and focus and dedication and research and experience that goes into the production of the show.
Don't just take it and expect other people to pay for that which is important to you.
There is no other show like this in the world.
I don't think there ever, as has been before, I don't think there ever will be again.
Because the first time is the only time.
It's the first time. | |
Can't re-virgin yourself.
And so I think it's unique.
I think it's hugely powerful.
I know it's changing the lives of hundreds of thousands of people around the world.
You can be a part of that.
You can be a part of supporting the spread of philosophy.
So please, please sign up for a subscription.
Send in a donation to cover the expense of producing the show, to cover what you consume.
Do the right thing. | |
You know you have to reciprocate when it comes to relationships.
And if you don't have any money, that's totally fine.
Maybe you can just spend a little bit of time sharing the show around.
That's also hugely important to help spread it.
And of course, if you're just new to the show, don't worry about it.
Consume, consume. | |
But be aware. | |
Keep a rough tally of what you're listening to.
And please... | |
50 cents a show, really not that much to ask, but I'm going to ask it anyway, because you really are the only line between a philosophy-rich world and a philosophy-poor world.
So thank you so much. | |
Have yourself a wonderful, wonderful new year, and we will see you on the other side of the calendar digit flip.
