Warren Buffett.
His picture headlines a drudge report, and the headline is the savior with a question mark.
Now, I want to know, well, here's what Warren Buffett's going to do.
He's just purchased $5 billion worth of Goldman Sachs stock.
It's a publicly traded company.
Anybody can buy shares on the open market, but not shares like these.
Warren Buffett, who is a Democrat, gets 10% interest a year, every year, forever.
You can't get that.
He gets options to buy another $5 billion worth of stock at a guaranteed price of $115 at any time in the next five years.
You can't get that.
No, I can't either.
I can't get this.
Can you?
No, I can't get it.
I don't have $5 billion to invest in Goldman Sachs anyway.
It's a specially created class for this particular situation.
Now, I don't totally begrudge Warren Buffett and his Berkshire Hathaway coup.
Really don't.
But I do have some reactions to this.
What I do resent about Warren Buffett is when he runs around and plays the fairness card on income taxes and death taxes.
Here's a guy out there getting the best deal he can for himself, and it's a sweet deal that nobody else can get.
And yet, there's no fairness in this, and yet when it comes to the death tax or income taxes, well, we're going to be totally fair.
We're going to take as much from people who have the most as we can.
Because it's not right they should die and be able to leave all that to their families.
Now, if we can't get Warren Buffett's stock visions, if we can't get the deals that he's getting such as this from Goldman Sachs, why should we be saddled with his tax ideas?
But I also have another question to ask about this.
Warren Buffett's savior, he's a guy who buys low and he sells high.
Why isn't he hammered for being a greedy capitalist vulture feeding off the misfortune of others instead of being portrayed as a savior here?
Warren Buffett is doing what all liquid Americans should be doing.
He's buying value.
It's just you can't get the deal from Goldman that he got.
But this is what the wealthiest 1% of Americans do when they have disposable income.
They make our economy work even in tough times, and this is a buy opportunity, and he sees it.
Now, while we're talking about an upside-down world here, look at Iraq two years ago.
Follow me on this.
The people of Iraq were siding with al-Qaeda out of fear when their best friends were trying to save them, us.
Now, two years later, that ravaged, destroyed, lost country is looking more and more like a shining city on a hill, amazing what a strong military and drill here, drill now can do and what it has done for Iraq.
Americans who are shaking with fear right now might remember that Obama wanted us to surrender in Iraq, and it would have destroyed that country.
He wants us to surrender our capitalist foundation today, and that will destroy our country.
You can look at our economy one of two ways.
Our economy is either on the verge of socialism or the verge of booming.
If you cut, there's a Texas congressman, Hensarling, Jay Hensarling, he's got a great idea.
Cut corporate and capital gains taxes for two years.
Just cut the capital gains tax for two years, temporary cut for two years, and watch the $700 billion that's supposedly necessary for the bailout all of a sudden not become necessary.
The government really wants to do something here.
They got plenty of ammo.
They got plenty of things at their disposal without printing $700 billion new dollars.
So you cut corporate and capital gains taxes.
You drill everywhere.
You drill now, and you keep Obama out of the White House and look out.
We're going to be booming.
Or you don't do any of this.
You raise all these taxes, as Obama is promising to do.
You guarantee that our military loses in conflicts around the world.
There will be no drilling whatsoever for any new energy sources.
All you'll get is a tire gauge.
Hello, socialist foundation to our economy.
Are times bad now?
That's the strange thing.
They're not.
The overall economy, the fundamentals, they are there.
They are there.
We are teetering.
We're teetering.
We've got choices to make.
We either make socialist choices or we make free market choices that benefit people like Warren Buffett, who's being called a savior.
Warren Buffett is not being socialist here.
Warren Buffett is the epitome of capitalist here, going getting this deal that he got from Goldman Sachs for giving them $5 billion.
He is a steely-eyed capitalist.
He is looking for value for himself and the shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway.
That's what oil companies do when permitted by the government, the same government that destroyed the home mortgage market and put us in the situation we are in today.
If we just get out of the way of capitalist vultures like Buffett and get out of the way of greedy oil barons who make 8% after-tax profit, this country can be more prosperous and more free than it ever has been.
But if we put socialists like Barack Obama in charge, we run the risk of looking more like a rock looked two years ago.
So God bless Warren Buffett, but let's learn the lesson.
What's saving Goldman Sachs?
He's being called a savior, not because he's doing anything socialist, is he?
Now, Snurtley is just sending me a note.
What do you mean?
If you do not explain what you mean by fundamentals are good, it's going to be totally distorted by the end of the week.
The Russia's out of touch things again.
Oh, that's not care about that, Snurtley.
Why are you guys in there so damn concerned about what they're going to say about me?
Doesn't matter.
It doesn't affect me.
They haven't been able to hurt me.
I've got, in fact, that's true.
There is a college, I'll take a break.
I'm going to go find it.
Max Boot, who's at the Council on Foreign Relations, used to be at the Wall Street Journal, now has an op-ed that runs regularly at the Los Angeles Times.
By the way, folks, another train derailed out there, and this time it targeted a guy, and this is not an SUV.
Another train in Sylmar, Miramar, one of the Mars, derailed and ran over a guy.
I mean, this whole state's coming off the rails out there, not just the trains.
They can't keep the trains on the track, much less anything else.
Max Boot has a piece on the fundamentals of this economy and how strong they are.
We are teetering.
We're teetering, but we're not in a recession.
Much as the drive-bys, and the Democrats would like to put us there.
All right, I got a brief time out.
We'll take it.
Come back.
Your phone calls and all the rest of today's exciting program.
What remains of it after that?
I didn't need a second page anyway.
I could have come back on time.
Greetings, welcome back.
The fundamentals of the U.S. economy are sound.
Snerdley says you don't believe that, and so I have to explain.
Because otherwise, he thinks that you all are just teetering on the edge of collapse, disaster, bankruptcy, and all of that.
And when I say the economy's fundamentals are sound, it makes it sound like I am out of touch.
So I'm going to tell you why you feel what you feel.
It ain't the economy.
It isn't.
Hang on, but here's Max Boot in the Los Angeles Times today, Don't Sell America's Economy Short.
He talks about, it starts out this way, a visiting Israeli cabinet minister made two interesting points at a conference in Washington over the past weekend.
The current financial crisis, he said, is undermining the perception of American power when it comes to dealing with problems such as the Iranian nuclear program, Russian adventurism, and a growing threat from Hamas and Hezbollah.
Various actors around the world look at the U.S. and they see a crippled giant that reduces incentives to make concessions to Washington.
Problem is real, but so is the additional sentiment that he expressed after having been here for a few days.
The economic woes of the U.S., he found, are not nearly as apparent up close as they are in sensational media coverage abroad.
So far, Main Street has shown a surprising amount of resiliency given the problems of Wall Street.
Even if the economy eventually succumbs to recession, it'll bounce back before long.
It always has.
There have been plenty of crises in the past, the stagflation and oil price spikes of the 70s, the savings and loan debacle, soaring trade and budget deficits of the 80s, the popping of the dot-com bubble, the terrorist attacks in the early 2000s.
Thought all of those things would make us go the way of Rome, and we came back stronger.
Didn't we, Snerdley?
Obama sure as hell made out like a bandit in this decade.
Obama got rich in the Bush years.
Al Gore got rich in the Bush years.
The Clintons got rich in the Bush years.
What the pessimists ignore is that the fundamentals of the U.S. economy remain strong.
You know, folks, the U.S. economy, this is another indictment of the media.
U.S. economy is, you can trace it to the confidence of people who make it work, which is you.
It's not these Wall Street people.
It's not people in Washington.
Do you really think that Barney Frank and Chris Dodd and all these yokels conducting hearings at Bernanke and Henry Paulson, they got a magic bullet to fix this?
Do you really believe that?
Don't, because they don't.
If anybody up there had a magic bullet to prevent things like this, they would never happen.
But they do happen because you can't stop the market.
You just can't stop.
Now, you can socialize it and slow it down and change it and destroy it over time, which is one of the risks here.
These people are no different than anybody else.
They just, they have this aura of expertise based on the jobs that they hold and the jobs that they've held.
But it's all happened on their watch.
It's all happened on their watch, and now they claim they got the magic bullet to fix all this.
And it's only going to be $700 billion, trillion, maybe.
That's why I said, folks, I've always said you laugh at me.
Some of you think I'm being smart, Alec.
If they're going to have a recession, don't participate.
You'd be surprised at the power of attitude.
What the pessimists ignore is that the fundamentals of our economy are strong.
Indeed, the World Economic Forum has ranked the United States as the world's most competitive economy for the last two years.
New survey comes out next month.
Its statistics show that the per capita gross domestic product in the U.S. consistently has grown faster than in any other developed economy since 1980.
Hello, Ronald.
Yes.
Looking deeper at the causes of American competitiveness shows that we score especially strongly, not only in domestic market size, number one in the world, but also, and we keep hearing about China, we're number one.
We're the number one domestic market in the world.
Don't ever forget it.
Nobody's close to us.
But also in such areas as time required to start a business, we're number three.
Venture capitalist availability, we're number one.
The cost of firing an employee, we're number one.
Ownership of personal computers, we're number two.
University-industry research collaboration, we're number one.
And quality of scientific research institutions, we are number two.
Now, I'm not going to get into the liberal makeup of these things.
We can do that later.
But just giving you our ranks here.
The availability of venture capital might be affected temporarily by this market turmoil, and we should worry if Democrats gain control of both ends of Pennsylvania in November because they might exacerbate what the survey found to be the two most problematic issues for doing business in the United States: high tax rates and cumbersome tax regulations.
I'm telling you, we can't afford to take out a loan on Barack Obama.
We can't afford the risk.
We don't know what we're getting, and we don't need his co-signers on the loan.
Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayres, Tony Resco, Bernadine Dorn.
But whatever happens in the next few months, most of the other advantages that have been powering the U.S. economy forward for decades will remain unchanged.
So too will another vital statistic, and that's population growth.
According to federal statistics, the fertility rate in the United States, where each woman has on average 2.1 kids, is now the highest among major industrialized economies because we aren't having as many abortions as we used to, among other things.
So we are producing replacement population worker bees.
Now, takes us back to Democrats and taxes.
If you think what's happening now is a shutter, wait till all this starts happening with Social Security.
Now, this degree of crisis may not happen in your lifetime or mine, but it's certainly going to happen in your kids.
And they may not be willing to pay the tax rates that people like Obama are going to require.
So elections matter.
This one is crucially important.
Media in the tank, propagandizing for Obama.
So if the fundamentals of the economy are strong, and if there's still economic opportunity out there, people are opening new businesses every day.
Entrepreneurs are doing what they can.
In situations like this, we create new entrepreneurs.
We have a history of this.
Opportunity's out there, but it's not going to come to you.
May knock on your door.
As long I hear you knocking.
I hear you knock.
Yeah, it might be opportunity.
Open the door when you hear it knocking, unless it's after midnight at night.
Opportunity does not show up unless you bought it, and that's when she's arriving.
And I probably wouldn't even call that opportunity.
But it's out there to be had.
So why do you feel so bad?
Why do you feel so bad?
Well, there are genuine reasons, but they are not economic.
In order to exert control over us feisty Americans, the left, the Democrat Party, the socialists, have come at us slowly and deliberately, but daily.
It never ends.
They first tried to trash our religion until we are coward to be quiet and speak in hushed tones.
Then it was a war of getting rid of our guns.
Can't have those around.
That gives us too much control.
Then they infiltrated the public schools, the universities, and the drive-bys to have control on our thinking and our moods.
And there is where you feel bad.
Because they are telling you, wherever you go, you can turn on a radio, listen to a music song.
You can listen to a television show, watch the news, watch a movie.
And they will tell you your country stinks, and so do you.
Then they came after our cars.
They made the ultimate American definition of freedom a demon, shaming us in these little matchbox toys where we can really not escape anywhere.
And now they're working on cell phones, folks.
I mean, this will not go away.
Cell phones cause cancer.
Same manner they went after cigarettes.
In addition to taking a freedom, they gain cash to operate.
Why do cell phones scare them?
Well, because we can talk to each other.
And as soon as they can, they will get rid of me and others who do what I do with the fairness doctrine.
And then they'll try to get rid of people on the internet that they don't like.
And then they will use both of those fora to spread their own propaganda.
I mean, just this week, we saw the first attempt to destroy the free market and private investment, to socialize the financial system of the United States of America.
We're getting to the point we're not going to have control over our money anymore either.
But who needs to invest when we have a secure future with the government?
And then we had Chuck Schumer blaming all this on the mortgage.
What is the mortgage?
The mortgage is the instrument of access to the American dream.
It is the symbol of private property ownership.
And there's Chuck Schumer.
Does the mortgage cause this?
You owning private property caused this.
It's a long road that we have traveled.
This has been going on for years, decades, with this determined group of community organizers.
But it's a very straight road.
It is the road to serfdom.
Frederick Hayek wrote a book by that name.
That's why you feel bad.
You're losing your freedom, and you don't understand how it's happening.
Look, let me say one thing here just to clarify.
When I say the fundamentals of the economy are strong, I'm not arguing, I'm not trying to talk you out of feeling pessimistic about certain things because we need to be concerned about something here.
I'm not saying just walk around, hey, everything cool and dandy, happy-go-lucky, and you know, flap our hands like we can fly around and fly away from it.
Not that at all.
The problem that we're in the midst of trying to fix here is not capitalism's fault.
It is the government.
We have, and we have not just a right, we have a duty to get over being pessimistic.
We have a duty to be angry about this and motivated to do something about it.
The government is on autopilot in a lot of respects.
It's unresponsive to the public will.
And it is the government, these loathsome politicians who use government to undermine the economy.
I just don't, you ought, don't be so pessimistic about the economic circumstance.
It's going to affect how you behave economically.
But you should be mad at what's happening with this government system that has lurched from its origins to something else that the founders never endorse.
I mean, this is just, you know, it is maddening.
When I say the fundamentals of the economy are sound, but we're teetering.
We've got two choices.
We can choose a boom or we can choose a socialist government and a socialist economy.
And you can say goodbye to boom.
Here's a little illustration, little example of you.
You hear a story like this, and you throw your hands up.
You see, my guys, is it going to be long before it happens here?
What do we do about this?
This is from the UK Guardian.
Today, Ecuador is having a vote on giving nature human rights.
Ecuador will next week consider what many countries in the world would say is unthinkable.
People will be asked to vote Sunday on a new constitution that would give Ecuador's forests, islands, rivers, and air similar legal rights to those normally granted to humans.
If they vote yes, and the polls right now show that 56% are for this and only 23% are against it, then an already approved Bill of Rights for Nature will be introduced and new laws will change the legal status of nature from simply being property to being a right-bearing entity.
You could perhaps be accused of murder if you cut the wrong no comment from nature on this yet.
Nature's not even in a campaign.
Nature hadn't even run any ads on television in Ecuador.
You could be charged with murder theoretically if you cut the wrong branch off a tree.
Or if you, you know, you're tooling down a river in Ecuador in your little kayak or your canoe and you've got to relieve yourself.
You pee in the river, somebody sees you.
Who knows what they could get.
This is just, this is this, the left is just out of control for so much power.
And it's all about, it's hard to say it's all about anything.
But one of the things that's really driving this is the absence of God in the hearts and souls of the left.
They have substitutes.
All right, people have been patiently waiting.
And I still got these Akhmedina.
I've got a great roster of soundbites.
I'm just swamped here.
Carlos in Weston, Florida.
Carlos, I'm glad you waited.
Welcome to the EIB network.
Hello, Sam.
Hey, Rush, thanks for taking that guy Joe to the woodshed earlier.
Thank you very much, sir.
Rush, that Tony Blankly piece that you read earlier is a perfect example of why John McCain needs to get ahead of this thing.
And he had a golden opportunity on 60 Minutes, and he just pandered.
And now they're hitting him over the head with it on that New York Times piece.
So, you know, I just want to know when you think he's going to start naming names in this thing.
Well, now they are hammering the New York Times, and they did in a press release on their website.
Look at I don't, they're naming names in ads.
They're naming names in the voices of others, but McCain is not doing it.
I don't know.
I gather it's just not in his nature.
Well, you know, it's the only way the mainstream media, well, it's the only way that he's going to get the attention of the people that need to hear it above and beyond who's already hearing it on the internet.
But it's just frustrating because he has a golden opportunity to take advantage of this.
Isn't this the four-year lament we have about our candidate, no matter who it is?
Yeah, it is.
Be at me at the House speaker.
They don't fight back.
They just continually try to reach across the rail and make friends with these people.
These people are trying to destroy them.
And I know it's frustrating.
I'm not a psychiatrist.
I cannot explain McCain.
I can just, I just, look at he's been around a long time.
He's 73 years old.
And he thinks he knows the right thing to do.
And I can't tell you.
I can't tell you the number of people who say, Rush, do you have an inside line to that campaign?
I want to tell them what they ought to do about X.
These are people that you would know their names.
Well, I have the same fear that you have.
You know, they're watering down Palin and they should let her just be herself.
No, let Palin be Palin.
But see, they're keeping her on a script so that she mirrors McCain in this reform business.
He thinks the election's about reform.
Well, he's being hit over the head with it.
And, you know, this guy, Joe, that called earlier, you know, that had the audacity to try and blame McCain for this is just a perfect example of how out of touch they are.
Not just that.
Presented with the facts to refute his point.
He didn't say, oh, thanks.
I didn't know that.
He kept facts didn't matter.
This is why we can't debate these people in a rational way.
This is why they will not come into the arena of ideas.
They don't have the facts.
They're wrong.
And occasionally they'll send out a little infantryman like Joe here to try to get into our high command, but it doesn't work because the arena of ideas doesn't lie.
And these guys don't have ideas.
They've got propaganda.
I was going to say, I've got so many people that call me, email me.
Rush, I got to talk to whoever's running the McCain campaign after they see him on television or something.
We got to get a message in there.
There's a better way to do this.
And I say, I don't have that information.
I don't know what the back channels are, but I know what the reaction would be.
I mean, the people running McCain's campaign are professionals.
And if they start hearing from everybody in the world, all they're going to do is start resenting all the advice they're getting because they're going to hear it as an insult or as endless criticism.
And they're going to say, look, we're the guys running this show.
We're the guys McCain hired.
We know what we're doing.
Back off.
And McCain's running the show here.
I mean, he's setting out the pattern and the tone that he wants to use and the main ideas he's trying to get across.
But this New York Times stuff, you know, part of the purpose of this is just keep McCain constantly on defense and saying, no, that's not true.
No, that's not true.
No, they just flood the zone with lies.
Obama's doing it.
There's an ad out there saying McCain opposed stem cells.
I mean, the whole Obama campaign just flooding the zone now with lie after lie after lie.
And so the McCain campaign is stuck at the rapid response theory.
Okay, got to respond to that.
Some of these are so bad, even the media is ripping Obama for it.
But they're doing it in a way that says, ah, 15-yard penalty.
They kind of lackadaisically, half-jokingly say, hey, look at old Barack.
He's got another good lie.
So the way they marveled at the way Clinton did it.
Still lied, boy.
It's cleverly done, though.
We barely caught it.
Da-da-da-da-da.
What have you?
That's why guy Carlos and Weston's right.
You got to go on offense here.
McCain is the opponent.
Wall Street's not the opponent.
Chris Cox is not the opponent.
Let Sarah Palin loose.
Let her start electrifying things again.
It can happen.
This is Kalin in the Highlands Ranch, Colorado.
Great to have you here.
What a great name, Kalin.
One of my all-time favorite top 10 female names.
Somehow I've heard that before.
Yeah.
Rush, I have waited for, unlike your previous caller, I have tried for 16 years, have waited to say the words, big adjusts.
I'm so excited to talk to you.
Thank you.
I am really concerned.
You mentioned earlier not to be concerned with the Washington Post poll that came out today.
But if you cite, like, say, Florida, for instance, on Fox and Friends this morning, they mentioned that although McCain is leading in that poll, that at least 500,000 more Democrats are registered to vote.
Furthermore, my daughter, who is a Republican delegate, national delegate at her college and a political science student, she mentioned that the effort to register voters, college students, has been huge.
They've gotten them several.
And she said that in the past, it isn't just that they've slept in and haven't been able to vote.
They weren't registered.
And now they seem to, and she said Obama's campaign pays people to register people to vote, to sign up and register.
And that's the Chicago street money.
Do we need to be concerned with that?
Well, yeah, I mean, you always got to be concerned because Democrats can't win without cheating.
And that's why you've got to be worried about what Acorn's out there doing, fraudulently registering as many people as they can.
But it's a small bit of comfort, but every four years we hear about college-age voter registration, how it's set in records.
We hear about rock the vote.
We have that idiot, that sheer, stupid, brainless amoeba, P. Diddy, with his vote or die voter registration effort.
And we hear every four years about how, oh, man, we really rock them and suck them.
We got college kids.
We got people.
They really want Obama.
They love him.
And they never show up in nearly as large a number as we're told.
All of this is propaganda.
You've got to learn, Kaylin.
All of this that you're seeing, all these polls right now, the truth is that Obama is going to spend a whole lot of money in Florida because he's in trouble in Florida.
He's in big trouble in Florida.
He's going to dump a lot of money in here.
And he partly wants to do that so that McCain will get tricked into spending a lot of money here and wasting it in a state that he doesn't need it.
There's so much going on here behind the scenes.
Bottom line is, you are like everybody else.
You're watching, even Fox, these polls right now, don't ignore them, but don't give them a whole lot of credibility and don't let them affect your attitude.
The purpose right now is to have you all depressed and think that there are 500,000 more Democrats in Florida than there are all Florida.
Oh, it's a horrible.
You're subject to a propaganda effort that gets ratcheted up every four years by the media for the Democrat candidate.
Okay, so I've got to stay strong and not fall for the.
I'll tell you when it's time to panic.
Okay.
I trust you, Rosh.
You can.
Don't doubt me.
It's not time to panic.
It's time to be really mad about what's going on in Washington.
And folks, this is very simple.
If you want health care run like the financial mortgage system, if you want more and more of this economy reflected by what happened in the mortgage business, then do vote Obama.
This is what you're going to get.
You're looking at the people who broke this thing, represented by Barack Obama.
This notion that the economic downturn is benefiting Obama, conventional wisdom.
Some polls even say it's true.
But it's just conventional wisdom.
This is a sitting duck like energy prices are a sitting duck.
And this is where McCain ought to go on offense, knock this out of the park.
This is Democrat corruption from the top to the bottom.
But he just, he doesn't want to do that because he wants to work with them.
He doesn't want to.
Somebody needs to tell that campaign, the Democrats are who you need to beat.
But he doesn't look at it that way.
So that's why I turned Palin loose and let it rip.
Brief timeout.
Back right after this.
Don't go away.
The official transcriber of this program, of course, is known to one and all as Dawn.
And Dawn just sent me an email.
She's on the other side of the glass.
She just sent me an email.
A friend of hers went into the Whole Foods today, parked in the parking lot, went into shop at Whole Foods.
When a friend of hers came out, there was a note on Dawn's friend's car.
Now, Dawn's friend's car had a stop child abuse tag, bumper sticker or something on it.
License please, stop child abuse license please.
All right, so Dawn's friend comes out of Whole Foods and there's a note on the car window.
The note says, I see your stop child abuse tag.
Did you realize if a rapist gets a child pregnant, Sarah Palin wants to force that child to have the baby?
The Obamaites are patrolling the Whole Foods and other grocery store, the mall parking lots here, and they're looking for any opportunity whatsoever.
Now, there's so much to say about this.
My attitude is this is the actions of a bunch of panicked, insecure, not confident people, and they know they are lying.
Doesn't matter to me that they know they're lying, but this is not what people who are confident about winning elections do.
They don't want to win the election.
They don't want to mandate.
They just want power.
They are lost souls, meaningless lives.
It's just this, they are sick.
Our society has gotten so sick.
I got a note today.
I had no clue that Mike Mamon, the official broadcast engineer of the EIB network, had put in a Renaille tankless water here.
You would think I would know.
You would think that he would call me and see if he could get a deal.
But he did.
He just put one in.
And I talked to Mamon thousands of times a day.
He says, by the way, I just had a Renai water heater installed to replace my unsafely vented tank heater.
It works like a champ.
It's enabled us to reclaim a lot of wasted space in the utility room.
And after using the energy savings calculator on the website, Mamon says he's going to save 35% on his energy bill with this.
35%.
