People's Rationalization of Suffering
00:03:09
|
|
| But because I truly think it compounds unhappiness, this irrational belief that I'm actually addressing the topic, the happiness hour. | |
| I mean, there is always the possibility that it brings people some comfort because people hate chaos. | |
| People, I wonder, is it... | |
| Do some people prefer to believe they're being punished by God to tragedy happens? | |
| You ever think of that? | |
| You think that that's possible? | |
| Because I find it so incredible that somebody would think that way. | |
| I mean, what is their view of God? | |
| I mean, that can't make you happy. | |
| God took my child's life because I'm so bad? | |
| Did the worst thing possible? | |
| You know, how does that portray God? | |
| Look, I have enough difficulty with, which I believe is a parable, the Job story. | |
| You know, Satan with his deal with God. | |
| I have enough problems with that. | |
| But that's a story to make a point about suffering in God's existence. | |
| But this really doesn't... | |
| I don't see how this can add to a person's happiness. | |
| You've lost your child and then you think you are so awful as to have deserved it. | |
| That's what we call compound unhappiness. | |
| Good people... | |
| I mean, good people suffer. | |
| It's one of the most obvious lessons of the human condition. | |
| And some bad people don't. | |
| Yes, indeed. | |
| Yes, indeed. | |
| Thank you. | |
| Not only does it depict God as cruel, Because of the punishment to the parent. | |
| What does it say about the punishment to the person? | |
| Did he or she deserve to die? | |
| And does God use children to punish parents? | |
| When there's a biblical phrase, children shall not die for the sins of the parents, nor parents for the sins of their children? | |
| Alright, that's why I put it on the Happiness Hour. | |
| It's bad enough to have such tragedy than to compound it with, gee, I deserved it. | |

Heart Goes Out

|
|
| I mean, you know, I admit if you smoke cigarettes for 30 years, two packs a day, and you get lung cancer, it's not a punishment. | |
| It's a sad consequence. | |
| And my heart goes out to you anyway. | |
| We'll be back. | |
