Dennis Prager Show - Compound Unhappiness Aired: 2020-02-21 Duration: 03:13 === People's Rationalization of Suffering (03:09) === [00:00:00] But because I truly think it compounds unhappiness, this irrational belief that I'm actually addressing the topic, the happiness hour. [00:00:14] I mean, there is always the possibility that it brings people some comfort because people hate chaos. [00:00:23] People, I wonder, is it... [00:00:26] Do some people prefer to believe they're being punished by God to tragedy happens? [00:00:36] You ever think of that? [00:00:39] You think that that's possible? [00:00:42] Because I find it so incredible that somebody would think that way. [00:00:49] I mean, what is their view of God? [00:00:50] I mean, that can't make you happy. [00:00:54] God took my child's life because I'm so bad? [00:00:58] Did the worst thing possible? [00:01:03] You know, how does that portray God? [00:01:06] Look, I have enough difficulty with, which I believe is a parable, the Job story. [00:01:11] You know, Satan with his deal with God. [00:01:15] I have enough problems with that. [00:01:17] But that's a story to make a point about suffering in God's existence. [00:01:24] But this really doesn't... [00:01:28] I don't see how this can add to a person's happiness. [00:01:35] You've lost your child and then you think you are so awful as to have deserved it. [00:01:43] That's what we call compound unhappiness. [00:01:50] Good people... [00:01:51] I mean, good people suffer. [00:01:54] It's one of the most obvious lessons of the human condition. [00:02:00] And some bad people don't. [00:02:07] Yes, indeed. [00:02:08] Yes, indeed. [00:02:09] Thank you. [00:02:17] Not only does it depict God as cruel, Because of the punishment to the parent. [00:02:23] What does it say about the punishment to the person? [00:02:26] Did he or she deserve to die? [00:02:31] And does God use children to punish parents? [00:02:36] When there's a biblical phrase, children shall not die for the sins of the parents, nor parents for the sins of their children? [00:02:46] Alright, that's why I put it on the Happiness Hour. [00:02:49] It's bad enough to have such tragedy than to compound it with, gee, I deserved it. === Heart Goes Out (00:19) === [00:03:00] I mean, you know, I admit if you smoke cigarettes for 30 years, two packs a day, and you get lung cancer, it's not a punishment. [00:03:07] It's a sad consequence. [00:03:09] And my heart goes out to you anyway. [00:03:12] We'll be back.
