Dr. Oz hosts mentalist Oz Pearlman to demonstrate how the subconscious mind influences physical healing, featuring neurologist Dr. Chupti Gokhani explaining the brain's three levels and how hypnotherapy alleviates migraines and acne for viewers like Sarah. The episode transitions to true crime survivor Mary Kay Beckman, who survived Wade Mitchell Ridley's attacks and now lobbies for dating app warning labels, while Dr. Drew advises on online safety. Finally, Dr. Oz and Lisa demonstrate time-saving cooking techniques, including chunky vegetarian chili and salad layering methods, concluding that mindful habits and mental awareness can transform both health and daily life. Healing Through the Subconscious00:13:58
Can this guy read my mind?
So I got a table with lots of stuff here.
I'm gonna step back so I can't influence you.
Pick up the object of the day.
A mentalist gets in my head.
Oh no.
Oh no.
How did you do that?
See how to tap into your own subconscious mind to heal your body.
This cutting edge medicine is happening right now.
Coming up next.
We'll save lives today.
You guys ready to get healthy?
You tap into your subconscious mind to heal your body.
Now, it may sound impossible, but it's cutting edge medicine that is happening right now.
Medical doctors are using ancient methods to target your deep mind, the part that controls your dreams.
And they're treating everything from your skin to your pain.
So today, we're showing you how they get inside your head so they can heal you.
Now you can do it for yourself.
Now, mind reading, you all heard of mind reading, right?
We've all grown up thinking we know something about it.
You may have even seen this incredible moment on America's Got Talent.
Take a look.
Unbelievable!
And now, eyes meet eyes!
O's probably come here.
Come on out.
How are you?
Dr. Oz, remarkable.
A pleasure.
Thank you.
I could call you Mr. Oz.
Mr. Oz.
And Dr. Oz.
Yes.
It sounds like a movie.
I love it.
So, our names are spelled the same way.
You should know, though, I'm the OG.
You are the original, my friend.
No doubt.
Just in case.
After all.
In all seriousness, do you ever get mistaken for me when you go around the table?
I have a very funny story.
I did a medical conference, huge medical conference.
My name was hidden in one of the agendas of speakers, and somebody snuck a peek at it, registration.
Rumors spread like wildfire that it was you.
When I went on stage, I go, I'm sorry.
The bad news is I'm not Dr. Oz.
The good news is I'm about to freak you all out.
So, let's get to the healing aspects of what you do.
What is a mentalist?
Explain it for everybody.
A mentalist is like a magician of the mind.
So, think reverse engineering my audience's thoughts.
So, power of suggestion, noticing people's body language, realizing what they're going to think of before they even do much of the time.
So, you agreed today to help me and the audience.
Yes.
So, these are tools that I want you to think about as you witness them.
I have no idea what you're going to do.
So, I'm going to turn it over to you.
But I do want folks to recognize that there's powers in us we can harvest.
So, you're going to read my mind, apparently.
Let's see what we can do.
Let's do it, Dr. Oz.
Let's go.
So, I got a table with lots of stuff here.
The producers of the show were kind enough to assemble a table of items based on what you would find at a surgeon's office, you know, an operating table, and a doctor's office.
And I have a little something about what I think will take place.
So, if I could, I'm going to leave this right over here.
You're going to predict what's going to happen?
I don't know if I'm going to predict.
This is my feeling.
Now, Dr. Oz, We know that if you were to just pick your favorite, it wouldn't even be that difficult.
The heart.
The heart.
Come on.
Cardiothoracic surgeon.
So, what I'm going to do, I'm going to step back so I can't influence you.
All right.
Now, you stay right here.
I'm going to stand back.
And what I want you to do is look at these objects.
Don't look at me.
Just listen to my words.
And one of these objects, how should we describe it, Dr. Oz?
It is the object of the day for you.
It is one of these objects, the object of the day for you.
What I want you to do is pick up right now, walk around the table and pick up the object of the day.
And to be clear, pick that up in one hand or two hands.
Your object of the day.
Go ahead.
See, normally as a surgeon, we heal with steel, so I would grab a scalpel.
But I love the audience so much, and I love playing with you, and you use purple gloves, so I'll use these.
And, Dr. Oz, just to be clear, when you made this decision, I told you, I want them to know when you were deciding on this, that you could have changed your mind.
I told you absolutely you could change your mind, and you even did.
Do me a favor, open that envelope yourself.
Open the envelope?
Please.
Take out the one piece of paper in there.
Make sure there's one and only one.
Unfold it once.
And how about I'll do this?
I'll unfold it the next one for you.
Oh, no.
Oh, no.
How did you do that?
How would you even know?
I gave it away with something that I was doing?
I think we're doing very well right now.
What you should do is focus on your ATM pin code and your social security.
No way.
Not happening.
That is unbelievable.
All right, we're going to come back to you in a second.
I love it.
You've agreed to actually work with real audience members.
I don't know who yet.
You should all be as nervous as I am just watching what just happened.
Do I have my wallet with me?
I don't have it, thank goodness.
All right.
So, tapping into the mind, isn't this just a trick, Anybar?
We're actually learning to dive deeper into our brains.
Dr. Chupti Gokhani is here.
She's a neurologist and a leader in the world of alternative medicine.
You just saw what happened.
Amazing.
So, what is it like to be able to tap into the unconscious mind, and why can't more of us do it?
It's unbelievable what he did.
And Oz was able to really tap into a different layer of your mind.
So, there are layers of the nervous system that the conscious mind has absolutely no awareness of.
So, we don't even realize, and you may not realize, that conditions such as migraines, digestive issues, skin conditions actually stem from and are triggered by your subconscious mind.
So, we could theoretically change that.
Come on back.
I want to understand the power of the mind.
So, we made a little model for you to help differentiate the conscious from subconscious mind.
So, the brain has three levels.
Think of it like a lollipop, right?
There's the inner chewy part, and we've evolved to get the outer part.
So, the inner part is the reptilian brain, right?
It's deep and it controls vital functions like your heart rate.
Also, some of your basic instincts.
That's why you can't hold yourself back sometimes.
Then there's the middle brain, right?
This orangey area.
And this is all about emotions.
Now, the most evolved part of our brain, the reason our brains are so large right now, is because this outer brain, the blue area here, this is called the new brain, and for a reason.
This is where language and logic, executive functions take place.
It's our conscious mind.
Now, it's believed that the deep rooted issues in your subconscious mind can cause physical problems in your body.
That's what Dr. Kokani is saying.
So let me give you an example.
Imagine that your brain, instead of looking like this, is actually a large company.
And at the top, you got a big boss, right?
And under her are employees who are on lower levels.
Now, the big boss doesn't always know what's going on down below.
Things are happening down here that she can't follow up on.
When the workers get ignored, what happens?
We go on strike, right?
Same thing happens in the brain.
You're not happy.
And your brain, like your subconscious, when it's ignored, doesn't like it.
It starts to work out those issues like the workers would.
So you start to vent.
It causes hormones to shift.
It causes physical problems, right?
Big time physical problems.
Like, for example, headaches, right?
Acne.
Stomach pain, back pain.
So, Dr. Kokani, when we ignore our subconscious mind, right, it's a major problem.
How do we stop that when it's not even aware in our own bodies that it's happening so we can start to heal some of these issues?
Right.
So, there are therapies we can do, such as hypnotherapy, meditation, yoga, and we actually start to calm the stress response and the endocrine response, and those physical symptoms start to dissipate.
Those migraines go away, digestive symptoms start to disappear, skin conditions even can be reduced.
Actually, on that point, this is an example.
We had a viewer, her name is Sarah.
She wrote in telling us that she had a weird experience.
She was being treated with severe acne.
There she is.
And then she got hypnosis.
And she claims that two months after treatment with this hypnosis, this is what her skin looked like.
I mean, to me, that is absolutely shocking with just hypnosis.
And she says she finally has her confidence back.
Dr. Kakani, thank you very much for this wonderful advice.
Thanks a lot.
Guys, we are underestimating the power we all have to heal ourselves.
This is a great example.
Please don't forget Dr. Kakani's book, it's called The Mysterious Mind.
And when we come back, Oz Perlman says he can read. the entire audience's minds.
Find out in a few minutes.
Get your glam on this holiday.
You only need five products and you can get them all at the drugstore.
No fuss fixes for your biggest beauty blunders.
There she is before.
Here we go.
I think she looks like a star.
I feel amazing.
I feel 10 years younger.
Plus, the seven second skincare routine to save you time during the holiday.
That's coming up tomorrow.
We're back with Oz Perlman, who says he's been reading this audience's minds during the commercial break.
I hope you all have your credit cards hidden somewhere.
Don't think about any key numbers, no pin numbers.
So, before the show started, you guys were all being observed by Oz apparently.
And he says there's a trick that he can do to demonstrate the power of the mind body connection.
So, mind body connection.
Yes.
Pick one person.
Pick somebody who's going to work with you hand in hand.
You were asking me a question before.
Would you mind doing this for me as a favor?
Yeah.
Good, good.
Now, have you met Oz before?
What is your name?
My name is Felicia.
Come over here, Felicia.
Have you met Oz before?
No, not before today.
Not before today.
Okay, let's try it with somebody that you've never met before, that I've never met before.
Okay.
Hold Felicia's hand.
Now, you know the placebo effect.
The mind is very powerful.
Literally, a sugar pill can cure you of certain things if you believe it enough.
Here's what's going to happen.
If I tap Felicia on the shoulder, you will swear that I tapped you on the shoulder too.
So I don't want you to play along or act.
I want you to close your eyes.
You won't even know what I'm going to do.
Dr. Oz, can you swear I didn't tell you what was going to happen right now, what you would feel, or anything at all?
I swear to all those things too.
Close your eyes.
Dr. Oz, can you see anything?
Did you feel anything yet?
No.
And the audience, look at Dr. Oz.
His eyes are closed.
Dr. Oz, don't say a word.
Just relax.
But tell us all right now, what happened?
What did you just feel?
What did I do to you?
It felt like it touched my nose.
Open your eyes.
What did it feel like?
Was it like a feather or a tickle?
Like that car touched my nose.
Yeah, because I just did that to Felicia.
You didn't do it to me?
There's no way!
There's no way!
And they see the replay on there.
There's no way!
And I like how Felicia said it.
I'll keep holding his hand.
Oh, no.
It felt like it touched my nose.
That's shocking.
What if we get more of the audience involved?
Because Felicia, you've been wonderful.
Come on, look, let's make this.
Dr. Oz.
Yes.
Can I go up?
One sec.
Before you go up, this show is about mind, body, wellness, making people their health.
Health is happiness.
I asked everyone in this audience earlier to think of something the opposite of well, some injury you had.
You know, everybody, stand up if you've got an injury in mind.
Stand up.
Let's get the whole audience involved.
Dr. Oz, you pick for me.
Who wants to do this?
Are you into this?
You're into this?
Yeah.
All right, what's your name?
Pauline?
Paula, all right, we got our first victim here, Paula.
First victim, I like the way you positioned it.
Paula, here's what I want you to do mind and body.
What I mean by mind and body is that you can't help but think about this injury.
Does everyone see how she's looking at it and thinking to herself back in time?
This didn't happen last week, did it?
No.
Okay.
And we have a seat if you don't mind.
Think back.
We can pick on any of you next time.
To how old you were, Paula, when this happened.
Don't tell me, but think about how old you were roughly.
Okay.
See that?
Dr. Oz, she didn't know concrete.
If this happened, Two years ago, three years ago, it's very clear cut in your mind.
What she did is think back in time, formative years, teenage or even younger.
Look at me for a moment.
This was in grade school, am I right?
Yes.
Look at me.
You always, it's hard to define age.
Bring that up just a little bit.
Paula, right around second grade, would you say you were close to eight years old at the time?
Yes.
Come on!
Paula, think from your body.
Look this way at me.
Think from your hair to your lips to your shoulders, all the way down your body, all the way hips.
Oh, she did something with her hands.
I don't think it was a hand injury.
Looks very athletic.
Why do I get this feeling?
Something to do with the lower half, something to do with a leg.
Does that make sense?
Yes.
Okay.
Can you believe this?
No.
Now you know how I feel with the card on my nose and the purple glove.
Paula, please close your eyes for one moment.
Open your eyes.
Where did the injury occur?
Where on your body?
Tell us where you're pointing.
My ankle.
Did you break it?
That's why.
That is.
That is unbelievable.
Dr. Raj, let's do this.
Let's reverse engineer.
I told you I reverse engineer the way people think.
Grab somebody else.
You were up before.
Here we stand if you don't mind.
What's your first name?
Caroline.
Thank you very much.
Caroline.
Caroline?
You okay?
No.
Here's what I want you to do.
She's having chills now.
She's worried what else I know.
That's okay.
Caroline, think about your injury.
Yep.
Think about when this happened.
And if you could, think about your age.
You looked over at Paula.
Do you know Paula?
I do not know Paula.
So, what was weird is this has no connection, but you thought of the same number as she did.
You jumped up.
Were you also eight years old?
I was eight, yes.
And you're smiling, but you're holding a smile.
Does this have something to do with your teeth?
It certainly does.
One of us.
Where are you from?
I'm from Australia.
Do you live in New York or did you come in for this?
I'm just visiting for a couple weeks.
You're just visiting?
Love Meets Murder Online00:02:33
Yes.
So could anyone, and something.
Close your eyes, please.
Dr. Oz, I can't make this stuff up.
Oh, come on now.
How could you even tell that?
How's it been possible?
Caroline, take us on a stroll down memory lane.
What happened to your tooth exactly?
So it was at an eighth birthday party, and it was pinata time.
There's no way.
I was blindfolded with the bat, and somehow I have spun and hit myself in the face and broke a tooth.
I don't believe it.
I don't believe it.
Is that possible?
It's not possible.
Unbelievable.
You'll find out where Oz is playing next, performing next.
You go to drwires.com.
We'll have lots of stuff about him after today's performance.
We'll be right back.
Today, I glimpse into a new world of true crime where love meets murder and technology becomes the weapon of choice.
With the advent of online dating, a new kind of criminal is emerging, targeting the over 40 million Americans who have turned to online dating.
If you're dating or someone you love, a daughter, friend, or relative, is doing the same, if you're out there dating, you're not going to want to miss this.
Technology has shifted the singles club and bar scene to the laptop and cell phone screen.
More and more people are looking for love on websites and apps like Match.
eHarmony, OKCupid, and Tinder, hoping romance is just a swipe or a click away.
But some find something much darker violence, abuse, even death at the hands of their digital dates.
Like Mary Kay Beckman from Las Vegas, Nevada, who was horribly misled by the match she met online.
After the passing of her longtime love in 2011, Mary Kay was just venturing back into the dating scene with dreams of finding love online.
Instead, Mary Kay found Wade Mitchell Ridley on Match.com.
She was initially drawn to his clean cut good looks and their mutual love of golf, but things soon soured.
Just eight days later, during a date at a golf tournament, Wade got jealous and they argued.
Sensing her charming suitor wasn't all he seemed, Mary Kay ended the relationship.
But it wasn't over for Wade.
Four months later, he returned.
The Deadly Dating Game00:08:55
With a butcher's knife, breaking into Mary Kay's garage and hiding there, waiting for Mary Kay to return home.
Mary Kay joins us.
It's a little bit scary.
Very scary.
So, what happened that evening when you got home?
I was coming home from a night out with a dinner with my friends, and I was talking on the phone.
I got out of my car.
It's something you should never do with your keys in one hand and phone on the other hand.
And he came out of my garage and approached me and started stabbing me.
He stabbed me 10 times on my arm and face, and two in my head, and the knife broke.
And then he stopped stomping on my head until I stopped making the gurgling sounds, so he knew he had killed me, and he stole my purse and ran off.
Two weeks after you were almost killed by someone for reasons you can't understand, Ray Ridley attacks again.
He killed, and actually his ex girlfriend, somebody he'd known for a while, Ann Simonson.
Yes.
And when that happened, he was arrested, and he admitted that he'd been responsible for your attack.
Now, I understand he had what's called a kill list, and you were on that list.
Yes.
What was that like?
When I went to my sentencing, he had done a plea bargain, and so when we went to the sentencing so that he could be sentenced for what he did to me, I found out that he had a list of five people that he was going to kill myself, Ann Simonson, who he did, he unfortunately did kill, his ex wife, a man she had an affair with, and an employer that had fired him.
Have you talked to any of the people on this list?
I talked to Ann's sister.
After he was sentenced, he received 70 years for what he did to me, and he would have received the death penalty for her.
And he killed himself in Nevada prison in May of 2012.
So after I found out he had killed himself, I did talk to Ann's sister, and it was very emotional.
Can I go through what happened to you?
Because it's a remarkable miracle you're sitting next to me right now.
It is.
So these are just some notes that I jotted down.
Let me be clear, I'm going to be pretty graphic, but I want people to understand what you came back from and what heinous crime this man committed.
You were left with 10 stab wounds on your face, neck, and upper body.
You suffered a seizure.
They had to drain your head because it was so swollen from him stomping on it with his boot.
And you had to have several parts of your skull reimplanted, recreated.
Because he damaged your skull so badly by that stomping.
Did you think about him much and why he did this?
Now, today?
No.
I realized that every time I cried or had emotion about what I was going through, I was giving him my energy.
And I realized that I needed to not give him that energy in order for me to survive and get through this.
And to this day, I don't, unless it's.
Brought up or talked about.
I just, I've put it, I've put it, I've forgiven him because I've had to, to move on.
Can I bring Dr. Drew on?
Talk to us.
He's a world renowned addiction specialist, but he knows a lot about this field as well.
Dr. Drew, please join us.
And as you're walking up here, I'm going to ask, I'm going to understand what was going on in the brain of this man.
Why does somebody, there's a true gentleman.
I would offer up my tie, but I'm not wearing one.
He is.
Why does someone create a kill list?
What kind of a man does this?
How can somebody almost kill someone he barely knew?
This is a psychopath.
I mean, she just came across a very unfortunate and profoundly disturbed individual.
When people go through the kind of trauma Mary Kay went through, and I love the fact that you've moved into this forgiveness phase because it's self preservative as well.
Give me an idea of how you advise your clients, your patients.
Yeah, I mean, forgiveness, gratitude, and trust, right?
I mean, that's what she's had to regain.
And it's extremely difficult to do that without.
I imagine you've had some therapy because you're doing so well.
And not only that, but just not having post traumatic stress disorder from this kind of a trauma.
But it is difficult without real help.
I know you've got a bigger goal than just healing yourself.
And I'm going to give you the floor to talk to millions of women who go through trauma.
Oftentimes it's subtle, but it's profoundly important.
Yours was not subtle.
To help other men and women that have been victimized with something like this, my mantra is live life, enjoy life.
And that's really to honor Ann.
And for people to realize, I'm really sorry, for people to realize that you, I went through three years of counseling, and you have to, yes, I cry, but I stop myself because I realize that I'm giving him my energy.
And to save myself and make myself better, I can't, I've got to move past that.
I am also lobbying to make a difference.
There are no warning labels on dating services.
And so I'm lobbying to change the law.
And my attorneys right now are working with doing these changes to change the laws in all 50 states.
We're going to the Supreme Court.
So I've got a big passion and a big mission.
Congratulations.
Thank you very much for sharing your story, it's profoundly important.
Up next, Dr. Drew's life saving advice on how to spot a liar.
And a dangerous person posing as someone trustworthy.
Whether you're online dating or not, this is advice that's indispensable to everybody.
You can all use it.
Thank you very much.
You only need five products and you can get them all at the drugstore.
Plus, the seven second skincare routine to save you time during the holidays.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Technology has shifted the traditional dating scene to the laptop and cell phone screen.
Over 40 million Americans are looking for love on websites and apps like Match, eHarmony, OKCubit, and Tinder, hoping romance is just a swipe or a click away.
But some find something much darker.
Violence, abuse, even death at the hands of their digital dates.
This topic is of interest to me because arming you with real ways to protect yourself from crime keeps you and your loved ones out of harm's way and, God forbid, the hospital.
Dr. Drew is back with us to give you three rules to protect yourself from becoming a victim of online dating.
But this is actually much bigger than it would be online dating.
The first you say is location.
Location.
Where does he want to meet?
Is he trying to isolate you?
And how does he push you into that location?
Is he demanding you meet somewhere?
Is there evidence of empathic failure?
Does he listen to your feelings?
Empathic failure, bad sign.
Empathic failure.
Empathic failure, like your feelings don't matter or you don't feel like your feelings are being heard, that can show up right in the location.
Where are we going to date?
I'm going to tell you where we're going to date.
No good.
So, location, location, location.
Next, notification.
Notification.
Put a post out on your Facebook.
Women don't want to talk about amongst their peers when they're going to date and who they're dating, but you can put a post up where I'm going to be.
Notify people in your social media circles.
Oh, without saying you're on a date.
Just say where you're going to be so people know and can look out if they don't hear from you in time.
In any good time, anyway.
And then this is actually a more interesting thing for me.
This is social investigation.
Whoever you date, ask them if you can friend their social media, friend them on Facebook, so you can go in, see who they are, where they work, who their friends are, how they communicate with their friends.
We used to always say, go in the medicine cabinet and look at the court records.
Well, now you have social media where you can do something very, very similar.
Just friend and unfriend, and you'll have a lot of information.
Yeah, I mean, if they're married, don't go on a date with them.
It's not going to work.
Well, if you see a wife on the Facebook page, yeah, I wouldn't do that.
Relationship status.
All right.
So location, notification, and social investigation is just simple enough for you to tell anybody in your family, to your daughter, your niece, your friend.
I got daughters, right?
Three of them.
And you teach them, and yes, you have to teach your kids how to online date, even though we're not doing it ourselves.
Listen, I have a daughter that dated very successfully.
She has a great guy.
So it's not impossible, but boy, it is treacherous out there.
It really is.
So before you all go, I want you to help me with something.
For many years, I've been telling our viewers to trust their gut instinct.
If they don't think they're healthy, don't ignore it.
Reverse Engineering Social Media00:16:13
Yes, sir.
Does the same apply here?
100%.
And women tend to sort of do internal inventories on themselves rather than looking outside and trusting how they respond to it.
Couple things.
If you feel uncomfortable, if something doesn't feel right, listen to that feeling.
You may even have a little voice with it, like, oh, there I go again.
One of those guys, if you have a pattern of having what I call a bad picker, like you have a pattern of having been traumatized.
You know who you are.
That's right.
And listen now, why do I keep, why aren't there any good guys?
Well, because it's your picker.
You're picking them every time.
And I always tell people, think butterflies, not lightning bolts.
If you feel lightning bolts, it's another one of those guys.
Be careful.
We'll be right back.
Dr. Drill.
Dr. Whoever said a doctor's visit isn't fun has obviously never been to the Dr. Oz show.
Is that right?
Make your appointment today.
Go to droz.com slash tickets and sign up for free tickets.
This week, my entire Oz clan has been stopping by with our favorite make-ahead meals to save you time during the holiday season.
Today, make-ahead lunch ideas for the whole family with the woman who keeps our family full and happy.
The glue that holds us all together, my wife, Lisa.
Come on out.
An excuse to have her next to me.
And I'll put you next to the beer over here.
So, Lisa's always focusing on the fact that.
Food has got to be, actually has to be joyful.
And that doesn't happen naturally, sometimes difficult.
So, meals have been critical to us.
Why does joy become the first word that comes to your mind?
Well, because living with you, it could just become straight kale and almonds all day long, which is not too joyful.
But we like food to be nutritious and delicious and to feed our spirit as well as our bodies so that when we come together as a family, it's a wonderful experience.
So, how do you do that when you don't have a lot of time?
Because that's the ultimate dilemma that most women in America are facing.
Yeah, no, when you don't have time and you're all stressed out, it's the last thing it is a joyful meal.
So you want to be able to cook ahead of time when you do have time.
And that way you can, when, you know, during, on the weekends, people are all together.
You can rope in your husband or your kids to help you chop things, cook things.
And, you know, you don't have to make the entire meal ahead of time.
You can make part of it.
So you can chop up the vegetables, put them in baggies, and then assemble, because that takes the most time, right?
Assemble quickly the night of.
But making ahead, preparing, being a little organized is a huge time saver.
Okay, today, one of my favorites.
It is chunky vegetarian chili with quinoa.
Everybody listen carefully.
I'm a carnivore.
I don't miss the meat in this chili.
Look at it.
You can almost put it in your mouth right now.
It is nice.
It is hearty.
The first step, obviously, is to make the chili.
Yes, and you're going to help me.
Oh.
Yay, okay.
Like I usually do.
Yes, always.
You're such a good sous chef.
So we're just going to saute the vegetables here.
See, you know how to stir it.
It's a hot pan.
We have a little olive oil, right?
And we're going to put in some onions.
And the vegetables make it hearty, but also give it a lot of flavor so you don't miss the meat.
And if you have to have meat, you can, of course, you can.
Well, with our family, we make the turkey sausage or the meat on the side, and then people like Mehmet or Oliver can add it in afterwards.
That's the nice thing about a customizable meal.
You can add things in separately.
Notice we're not doing the tofu first, we're doing all the vegetables.
We have carrots, we have celery, we have onions.
We're going to saute those, some garlic, and we're going to put in a little chili powder, again, to taste.
Chili powder is golden in our house.
Yeah, and this is our favorite spice, actually.
And some salt and some pepper.
You want to help?
Okay, great.
All right, so all that is going to saute down.
And then my favorite ingredient beer.
It only calls for one ounce of beer, so.
This is what I'm worried about.
That's what I was worried about.
You ever cook with that stuff?
I never even taste the beer.
There's always a beer there.
That's for me.
The rest of the stuff's for the chili.
No, so then we put some, you can have a sip before.
Pick a beer that you like, actually.
If you don't like the taste of it in the bottle, you're not going to like the taste of it in your chili.
How much?
Well, one sip less and then the rest of the bottle.
This is how you make it a joyful experience.
Right, right.
We talked about joyful cooking.
A little beer never hurts.
We have the can of tomatoes, crushed tomatoes.
And this is a secret ingredient a little maple syrup.
It cuts the acidity of the tomatoes.
You don't even taste the sweetness, you just taste sort of a smoothness.
It's really fabulous.
This is what I love.
It gives it a smoky flavor adobo.
It's in the adobo paste.
It's chipotle in adobo, chipotle pepper.
And then this is kidney beans and black beans.
These are kidney beans and black beans.
These are for the hardiness.
And they add fiber, so it really fills you up and makes it nice and thick and chunky.
Another thing that makes you not miss the meat.
So, this is a big meal.
Right.
I would suspect that you're not going to finish it all.
Not by myself.
No.
So, what do you do?
You just store it?
Yeah.
You freeze it.
You can freeze this and we could eat it next month for lunch.
So, you make it on a weekend, ideally, if you don't have a lot of time.
Yeah, absolutely.
And you know what?
It actually tastes better the longer it sits.
So, the next day, if we make this now, we eat it tomorrow, it tastes better because all the flavors have been able to meld together.
For many years, this was my lunch the next day.
Really?
I just put a little, seriously, poured it.
Then you maybe even carry glass because you don't want me having food in.
Because he microwaves in plastic, he's not allowed to.
I used to microwave.
He doesn't, now he knows.
Now he's doctorized.
All right, so tofu, turn to that.
That's right.
This is chili tofu.
So, the way tofu by itself is pretty tasteless and blends, and you want to make it flavorful.
So, put a little oil in here, and this is how you make the tofu flavorful and not taste like tofu.
We're going to brown it a little bit.
So, we're going to put it in some hot oil, and you crumble it just like you would ground beef.
And it's going to sizzle up in that hot oil, and.
We're going to put some salt.
You want to help?
Yes, I'm trying to help.
That's the oil you put in.
Here's some powdered garlic.
You can put that on, honey.
Some chili pepper.
That was so beautifully done.
Yes.
This is the chili pepper technique.
And again, some cumin.
And you just let this brown.
It'll take probably around 15 minutes, also, until it gets a nice little crispy brown coating on it.
And then you add that to the chili.
Now, quinoa, we're not making.
Any surprises on quinoa?
No, we've got the quinoa right there.
It's already made.
Now, listen, I love this stuff.
I think it tastes fabulous, but I'm a little biased.
So, I thought I'd have some members of my bike club visit with us today.
So, I've had women bring the man of their life to taste the chili.
This is as hard as I say it.
So, Martha, who's you bringing up there?
My beautiful baby boy, Andrew.
Yeah.
He's not a baby boy, but he's my baby.
But my baby boy, Andrew, loves meat, junk food, burgers, tacos, pulled pork, like you name it, he loves it.
The redder, the better.
The redder the better.
Are you pessimistic about the opportunity?
Yeah, I'm actually freaking out a little bit.
You're not sure?
All right.
Yeah, I'm not sure.
Let me get salad in there.
Who'd you bring?
Hi, bro.
My husband, this super, super meat lover, every chance he gets, he's always eating meat.
There's no meat list in our house.
Something has to have meat on it.
Give it a taste extra.
Andrew, give it a taste.
Let's see.
No, I did.
Honestly, this is pretty good.
You already tasted it?
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
I'm almost done.
I've been eating it.
I've been eating it.
No, that's good.
This is very good.
Thumbs up, thumbs up, everyone up.
Very good.
It's my favorite dish.
We're going to put this recipe on drrage.com.
Coming up, Lisa has sandwich and salad tricks to ensure you never have soggy lunch again.
Remember the psychic tuna fish they used to take to work every day?
How could I forget?
I was making them at 5 a.m., and then I would smell like onions and tuna fish on my finger.
When I was training everybody, Lisa would make me tuna fish sandwiches.
But unfortunately, by the time I got to work, I used to ride my bike to work, it got all soggy.
She cracked the code, so no longer does that have to happen in America.
We'll be right back in the story.
You only need five products and you can get them all at the drugstore.
Plus, the seven second skincare routine to save you time during the holidays.
That's coming up tomorrow.
I'm back with my wife Lisa, who has lunch packing tips that will ensure you'll never end up with a soggy sandwich or wilted salad at lunch.
Again, we're going to start with how to prevent a soggy sandwich because I have personal experience with soggy sandwiches.
My entire training was spent with Saigatuna fish.
Oh my gosh, it sounds like a condemnation of my.
I was still much.
I was the best.
I loved it.
It reminded me of you, but you've perfected the art of avoiding it.
So it starts, you say, with the bread.
Absolutely.
When you use fresh bread, it absorbs all the moisture from everything you're putting inside there.
So what you want to do is toast.
Still toast.
Yes, exactly.
No, you want to toast it so it gets this nice golden brown crust there.
Then we have to add the oil first.
Now, why is that so important?
Right.
So you want a nice little thin coating of oil.
Do not put a ton of oil.
You want to be very sparing.
Actually, you can.
If you have one of those sprayers, that's good too because it's just a mist of oil.
But the nice thing about oil is the dusting.
Yes, exactly.
The oil repels moisture.
But it tastes good.
And it does taste good.
The second tip is you want to put your proteins against your bread.
You can actually put your seasonings next.
If you want to do like oregano or salt, pepper, that's fine.
But then instead of doing your mayonnaise or mustard or ketchup relish, whatever you put, your condiments, most people put right on the bread.
Don't do that.
Put your protein first.
And the protein will keep the bread from absorbing the moisture in the condiments.
So you put whatever protein you like on there.
I'm going to put my proteins on.
Vegetarian?
Yes.
All right.
Good.
And then condiments go on top.
And then you put the condiments on top of that.
And that way the protein protects the bread in a way.
All right.
I got that on there.
Right.
What's next?
Next is your vegetables.
You want to make sure that you dry your vegetables thoroughly.
So, paper towel.
You can let them sit on paper towel, but pat them dry.
Often you just wash in a hurry and you'll put the vegetables right on there.
Don't do that.
There you go.
Beautiful.
And then close it up.
I'm done.
And you're finished.
And now it won't get soggy.
The question, of course, is when you really put this to the test, does it work?
It obviously is going to be dry now.
So we did something, honey, I didn't tell you about.
What did you do?
We actually made the sandwich your way and then the way people normally make it.
And the examples are right here.
So I'm going to walk this over to an audience.
We did this last night.
Last night.
Let's just see how Lisa's version compares to the other version.
We're not going to tell you which ones are, because there's an A and a B version.
I'll keep this one, Mike, so I don't confuse in my mind.
Who wants to taste these?
Audience.
There you go.
There you go.
You go.
What's your first name?
Jessica.
Jessica.
What's your name?
Melissa.
Okay, Jessica, Melissa, go ahead and taste that, Jessica and Melissa.
You taste it.
But you've got to take one of each.
Well, don't mess them up.
My goodness, you know how hard this horse to do without telling my wife?
He's this bossy at home, too.
Don't worry.
All right, now, Gab, get one in the other hand, one in the other hand.
All right, here.
You can be the plate holder.
Don't drop it.
All right, now, which one do you think is the one that is drier, tastier?
Explain both.
This one's fabulous.
The one on the left, you can taste the crunchiness.
This one is more soggy, it tastes like something I made.
For my kids.
The one on your left is Lisa's.
How do you like that?
You agree?
I agree.
We've cracked the code.
Years, years.
Who here is disappointed when they get their salads to work?
They just, you all there too?
Yes.
Soggy.
Soggy, wet, depressing.
Limp, limp.
Yes.
All these negative words.
Come over here, honey.
Solve this problem as well.
This is a wilt free salad.
This is fabulous.
This is one of my favorite things.
It's actually a trend now that's putting everything in jars.
But the way you, the trick to this is the way you layer the salad because if you mix it ahead of time, you're gonna end up with a soggy salad.
So, what you want to do is start with the dressing.
So, you can take your dressing and quick make it.
You can make it ahead of time and then just pour in the morning before work, pour it in there.
And then, what you're going to start with are your hard vegetables.
So, that's your edamame, your carrots, your chickpeas.
Put as much of those as you want in there.
These are nice, they've got lots of fiber and protein.
But they also, because they're hard, will not absorb the dressing and they will not get mushy.
Then, you need your soft vegetables.
Oh my gosh, you're like really going right there.
I like edamame.
Yeah, I'll say.
The chickpeas dry my mouth out, they're like sponges.
So, some tomatoes.
Some peppers, if you want.
Not a big pepper.
Now, most of the jar you want to fill with your greens.
They will be protected from touching the dressing because of this nice barrier here.
So now you stuff in your greens.
Some spinach.
The darker the green, you know, the healthier it is.
So you stuff all your greens in there, and then you put your protein on the top, and that'll help weigh it down so you can fit a little more in.
If you want some chicken, then you have all these layers.
Walnuts, never forget the walnuts.
Put the walnuts in there, great.
Now close it up, and you carry it to work like this.
Now, when you're ready to eat lunch, this is the magic trick here.
You flip it upside down.
And see, all the dressing coats the whole salad.
All right, nice you, Doug.
Coming up!
Lisa has the secret to double the number of foods the picky eater in your family likes.
It's going to change your lives.
Stick around.
Get your glam on this holiday.
You only need five products, and you can get them all at the drugstore.
No fuss fixes for your biggest beauty blunders.
There she is before.
Plus, the 7-Second Skincare Routine to save you time during the holidays.
All nuance.
That's coming up tomorrow.
My wife Lisa is back to show you how you can double the number of foods the picky eater in your life likes.
New technique.
Yes.
Does it work really?
It does.
It's called chaining.
It is really simple.
You start with something that everybody likes, probably not you, that I like and most people.
Potato chips.
You take something that they really like and you want to link it with healthier and healthier foods by degrees.
You can stretch it out over time and you do it gradually so you almost don't even notice you're eating more healthfully.
You start with the chips.
So you take potato chips, you mix it with veggie chips.
Say next week, you've You've acclimated to the veggie chips, you mix those in with these.
Acclimated.
Yes, they start to taste good because you taste them with a salty chip, they have a little seasoning on them.
And once you've gotten used to these, then you can move on to these, which are actually freeze dried whole vegetables.
So you've got tomato, you've got green beans, you've got peas, and you're actually eating real vegetables here.
Right, but they give you that crunch, that satisfying flavor of potato chip.
And lastly, you move and you mix these with some real fresh vegetables, some snow peas.
And you've got the crunch and the sauce.
Is this years of work?
Mixing Veggie Chips and Peas00:00:27
How long should that take?
Well, with some people, it can go pretty quickly.
With some people, it can take months, you know, a couple months.
But what you're doing is incorporating more healthy food.
