Dr. Oz Tests Viral Pinterest Food Hacks of All Time | Dr. Oz | S9 | Ep 66 | Full Episode
Dr. Oz tests viral Pinterest food hacks, featuring comedian Chuck Nice roasting impracticality before experts demonstrate a three-ingredient vegan sour cream, toaster bag grilled cheese, and waffle iron hash browns. The episode transitions to the "Great Diet Showdown," where Dr. Oz evaluates ten diets, eliminating Frances Dargbarant's probiotic plan due to commitment issues despite Vanessa losing 19 pounds, and rejecting Maya Fellow's protein shake diet because half the group couldn't sustain liquid meals, even as Kimberly lost 28 pounds. Chuck's Toaster Egg Hack00:09:27
Most pinned healthy food hacks.
The hits.
Vegan sour cream.
The misses.
Grilled cheese in a toaster.
And a few things in between.
Plus, we're going to play a little game of twin or false.
The Bush twins, Jenna and Barbara, go head to head.
Fraternal twins have more shared DNA than regular siblings.
Twin or false?
False.
Okay, I'm playing with truth.
It's actually.
Coming up next.
Are you ready to save some lives today?
I love you, Becca.
We're going down the Pinterest rabbit hole like never before.
You're about to find out what happens when we try the most pinned healthy food hacks.
Now, we're testing them out so you don't have to.
And, well, the results were Pinteresting.
But first, if you don't know what Pinterest is or if you just can't get enough of it, one of the funniest guys I know is here with a roast of Pinterest.
Comedian Chuck Nice, take it away.
Dr. Oz Pinterest, it's the tuition free Martha Stewart Community College for people with too much time on their hands.
Where else can you find so many creative solutions to problems that don't even exist?
The creativity is off the charts.
Turn a dirty gym sock into a gourmet meal.
Photograph your infant in a pocketbook.
Is that child abuse?
Not if you do it right.
Then it's art.
The thing about Pinterest that I really love truly talented, artistic people who have studied and applied themselves wholly to their craft get to watch morons who think they can replicate their creations fail miserably.
Here's a simple piece of string.
Watch as I turn it into a sweater.
Excuse me, but that's called knitting.
Here I am right now.
Well, thank you.
Thank you.
Take a look at this right now.
This is me actually doing a food hack, okay?
And of course, it looks adorable, but let me ask you this Did I wash my hands?
I don't know.
Am I eating that?
No.
Shut up!
Absolutely hilarious.
Thank you, Dr. Oz.
That's what I always think.
I love the pictures, I love the lessons, but then I'm trying to think does it make sense or not?
And we've been finding lots of times where it's not so sensible, but there's some gems in there.
So today we get to testing with the top pinned food hacks.
We reached out to our friends at Pinterest to help curate the list of things, and we tried a lot of them.
Joining us is Pinterest expert in lifestyle, blogger Alejandra Ramos.
Hello.
How are you?
Thanks for being here.
All right.
So here's the deal food.
In order to get on your list, he's got to sort of rise above the others.
He has to get repinned over and over again.
What's the secret to that?
Well, I think the ideas have to be the ones that really excite people, that get them inspired and give them the confidence to try something in the kitchen.
And no matter what you say, it solves a real problem.
I think, yeah, I think it's something that just gets people ready to try something new.
All right, so we've got two skeptical folks here to convince.
You're going to walk us through some of these highly pinned items.
We've got our chief taste buddy.
I'm a little worried about you.
You suck.
I'm not going easy.
I'm sorry.
I'm going to be honest.
The sarcasm drips from his face.
I know, you see it.
Coming over.
We get to the food hacks.
The first one is a three ingredient, listen carefully, Chuck, three ingredient vegan sour cream.
Trending up almost 300%.
That's a lot from last year.
So, why is the Pinterest community obsessed with a vegan sour cream?
Well, you know, if you're vegan, if you can't do dairy, whether it's for dietary reasons, medical reasons, you still don't want to give up the creamy, delicious sour cream or other amazing dairy products.
So, this is an easy swap that you can do at home.
We're using one can of full fat coconut milk.
Full fat, a little bit of apple cider vinegar, you just drop that right in, and just a pinch of salt.
Give that a stir, so that's gonna sour the cream, thickens it up a little bit.
And then we get this beautiful vegan sour cream here.
Before you taste it, Chuck, what do you think about this idea?
Okay, I'm gonna be full disclosure.
I actually, because I was so scared of this, I tasted it backstage.
And when I first heard it, I was like, when you hear vegan, the first thing you think is, oh, it's gonna be a special Thanksgiving, isn't it?
Like, look at me.
Toe Furkey, sign me up.
So, but I have to tell you.
Not bad.
I am serious.
This is wonderful.
Thank you.
I am serious.
See?
You know, it's got a little exotic taste to it because of the coconut.
Exactly.
It's just a little something different.
It's a little fun.
And it's got the fullness, but it's a little lighter on the inside.
It's a little lighter.
And the great thing is the apple cider vinegar cuts the coconut just enough to balance the flavors perfectly.
He's a chef.
I didn't know that about you.
I thought you were a comedian.
Kevin, can you do this?
You want your apron right now?
You want to get it later on.
Man of many tallies.
All right.
Next up, we got a food hack that a lot of you have seen, many of you have tried.
It is the grilled cheese in a toaster.
Yes.
Grilled cheese in a toaster.
I know, I hear the moaning and groaning.
Chuck, do you please give this a taste?
I'll handle it.
I'll handle it.
It's still warm.
Of course, I made it myself.
So, what makes this a healthier way of making grilled cheese?
Oh, look at it.
You see it.
What do you think?
What do you think?
Are you convinced?
This is grilled cheese.
Yeah, it's grilled cheese.
So, what makes this healthier?
Okay.
So, you're definitely saving some calories because There's no butter in this, right?
You could add it if you want, but you don't have to put it in because this is going to, the toaster is going to do all the work there.
We're using these toaster bags, which you can find at the grocery store online, and if you can get the sandwich in there, I think that's probably the trickiest part, then you just pop that into the toaster.
So if I can make a commentary here, because I actually tried this backstage, I learned you absolutely need these toaster bags.
Don't try to DIY this.
No, no, no.
I tried this with parchment paper.
It almost blew up the studio.
I'm not kidding around here.
It was all about a lot of my friends to put out the fire.
No, no, no.
I mean, it's easy to find.
You can find it online, grocery stores, and it's a great thing to just have in your pantry.
You can pull it out.
Also, it's no mess, right?
Because when you make grilled cheese, you have the messy pan, you have all that clean.
Let me just say this, okay?
I'm sure that this is a Pinterest hack, but poor people have been doing this forever.
Well, it solves problems.
It solves real problems.
Yeah, okay.
So this is Portress, not Pinterest.
Portress.
All right, next up.
Baked hard boiled eggs in the oven.
I said it right, guys.
Hard boiled eggs.
Have we been making eggs wrong for all of knowing whom you.
I've always boiled eggs.
Yeah, well, okay, not wrong, not wrong, but this is another way to do it that's a little bit foolproof.
What do you think?
Don't they taste about the same?
Okay, they taste exactly the same.
Yeah.
And the only difference is if I need 30 minutes to waste my life, I can put some eggs in an oven instead of waiting seven and a half minutes for them to boil.
You can make all of these at once, make them on Sunday, and then it's ready for the rest of the week.
You're grabbing the eggs.
Oh, you put the whole egg in here.
Yeah, so this is what you do.
So we pop it, you There's two ways to do it.
You can put them right into the oven, but that can be a little bit messy.
But you can just use a muffin tin like this, pop the egg whole complete into one of these wells.
This whole thing goes into the oven.
So you can do as many as you want.
You can do two trays at once.
And then you've got a whole bunch of eggs.
When you have a football team coming over to your house, and they're just like, we have to have some boiled eggs right now.
This is it.
So I share some of Shot's concern about the time, but I was really, really tough on this initially.
Like I said, we have a bunch of members of my team try it out.
Here's what happened.
There they are.
By the way, those are some of my most trusted staff members.
It worked for all of them.
But the whole point here is you do them all at once, don't think about it, don't have to worry about the water, but you're not saving time.
You're not saving time, but no, but it's a nice, foolproof tip.
Plus, it's great if you're entertaining for deviled eggs, if you've got a bunch of people coming over for brunch.
Or you could get a bigger pot.
You get a bigger pot.
Chuck is hard to please.
Yeah.
Chuck is really hard to please.
Now, we saved the best for last.
Let's see if we can get him over the hill on this one.
I feel like Chuck is going to love this one.
Hash browns.
I feel good about this.
Well, first, do you like hash browns?
I love hash browns.
These are hash browns made in a waffle iron.
Oh, now this actually sounds pretty good.
Walk us through the hat.
All right.
So, what we're doing, we're putting that waffle iron to use because, you know, nobody ever uses their waffle iron, right?
So, we're using some grated potatoes, adding a little bit of Parmesan cheese.
You can use any kind of cheese you want, any kind of seasonings.
I like paprika, or you could do chili powder, some garlic, some peppers, some onion.
And an egg to pull that together.
Mash it up.
What do you think of it?
What's going on over there?
What are you doing?
I hate it.
That was awful.
It's awful.
There we go.
Oh my God, it's terrible.
Oh my God, it's so good.
So you stir that up, and then you take a little bit of this mixture, and this goes into your waffle hour, and you follow your manufacturer's instructions.
But it goes right in.
Smells good.
Pushes down.
Doesn't that smell good?
Whoa.
I gotta admit.
Diet Shake and Weight Gain00:15:33
Yes!
I gotta admit.
This is the dumbest looking hack ever, and it's the best one because, quite frankly, you want your hash browns to be crispy on both sides.
It's still soft in the middle, and it's crispy on both sides.
Look at all those little nooks and crannies.
Yeah.
That's tough.
We know Chuck's around this thing.
I can tell from the little nooks and crannies.
No, I'm telling you, this is for real, guys.
I want some fingers.
Up, down.
You happy?
Everyone happy here?
We got happy customers all the way around, Chuck.
Thank you very much.
But other exquisite, wonderful, creative ways to use your Waffle Art on dr.az.com.
And thank you to our friends at Pinterest.
We're going to pin all these hacks on the Dr. Oz Show Pinterest board so you can enjoy them and share them with your friends.
Be right back.
Let's do a good idea.
Can the breakaway hit of the year, this little fidget spinner, help you focus and improve memory?
How about this?
Really useful in diffusing stress, the new tools that bust brain fog.
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
It's our biggest, longest TV experiment ever.
The Great Diet Showdown.
Now, we're investigating 10 out of the most popular diets to find out which one gets the best results.
And we're counting down to find out which is best for you.
Now, there are six diets that remain.
Four have already been eliminated.
Let's cross those off.
It's been the six that we're going to focus on now.
We're going to be tackling the diet with the biggest buzzword in health to start off today probiotics.
We've all heard about them.
Can a healthy balance of good bacteria in the gut really help you lose weight?
We're putting it to the test.
Now, each diet in our experiment was created exclusively for the show by a nutritional advisor.
World class people.
One of the dietitians, Frances Dargbarant, is here in person.
She designed a probiotic diet for us.
So please walk us through the connection of our gut with weight loss.
Sure.
So, Dr. Oz, in general, the more diverse our gut bacteria is, the less likely we are to be obese.
And the science is really pointing to the conclusion that if we can keep our gut balanced, that's really the key, one of the keys at least, to a healthy weight.
I see these papers now, they take these mice, give them two different kinds of bacteria in the gut, give them the same food, one gains weight, one doesn't.
So there's something here.
The question is does it work in us?
So do you eat a probiotic diet?
I sure do.
You do?
I do.
Walk me through a typical, how you design this, the kinds of things you think might make a difference for our viewers.
Okay, so you could choose dairy foods that have live active cultures like cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, start out with a great breakfast like that, and then miso soup or something else fermented for lunch.
And then moving on to dinner, we've got a nice big salad with those prebiotic fibers in there plus protein, and then a side such as kimchi or sauerkraut.
Now, some folks can't do dairy, and some folks say, I just hate sauerkraut.
That's not really my thing.
It's too strong.
It's too weird.
It's too whatever.
So then we have Probiotic shots.
Probiotic shots?
Yes.
This is what they look like?
Yes.
Like a little shot of vodka, but probiotics.
And it replaces the probiotics you could have eaten in your food?
Yes.
Now, what you're not going to get, you're not going to get the calcium and the vitamin D from the dairy, but if you really, like, if you just want to knock it out, some people, that's what they want to do, is just knock it out.
You're going to get five to 10 billion CFUs, which are colony forming units, of bacteria in that little shot.
Do that one or two times a day.
It tastes like vinegar a little bit.
I would have had kombucha.
Yeah, you could do that, but you'd have to drink the whole kombucha.
Yeah, but there's alcohol in that anyway.
A little bit.
A little bit.
And caffeine, yeah.
And a lot of water.
And a lot of water, exactly.
All right, so the question is does it work?
So we had women do this probiotic diet.
Vanessa's joining us because Vanessa was actually on the diet, and Vanessa, yay!
Smiling as she walks here.
You look very happy.
Yes.
So walk us through the diet for you.
How much did you lose?
Were you happy with it?
Complaints?
The diet was really wonderful.
I have digestive issues.
So when I started it, It cleared up everything and my belly got a little flatter.
And I was like, yes, it's got some sizes.
And so I kind of fell off, but all in all, 19 pounds.
You lost 19 pounds?
Yes, right.
Then back at 13, because I fell off a little bit.
But I recommend it to anyone who has digestive issues, the Crohn's, the IBS, just cleans it out.
Now, you mentioned that you gained a little bit of the weight back.
And you weren't the only one who had a little bit of an issue.
A couple of the members of the group, I mean, so one of them, I'll just show you a picture of her.
She lost 35 pounds at our last weigh in.
Right?
It's pretty good.
But then she reported a plateau and decided not to continue on the diet.
That always worries me when you plateau and give up on a diet because it means you can't do it for the rest of your life.
And we had other folks who had the experience where they lost some weight but didn't know where they needed to go.
So I have to figure out if this diet is right for everyone.
Frances, you say it's probably not the best diet for everybody.
Well, if you're looking for super fast weight loss, I would say this is not the diet for you.
But if you're looking to lose weight and actually improve your overall health and boost your immune system, Then it's for you.
And of course, we're headed into the cold and flu season, so I think people should give it a shot.
So I've got to give my judgment.
I've got to make a decision about all 10 of these diets.
That's why you spent a year studying them all.
And thank you for being part of the experiment, I appreciate it.
So here are my thoughts.
We should all be adding as many pre and probiotic foods to our diet.
I like the way you did it, Francis, because you gave us the probiotics and our fermented foods, and you fed those probiotics.
Lots of fiber, great gut health, key issue for a lot of Americans, you get the best there.
And it's comprised of foods that should help with weight loss.
But here's what I did not like.
The dieters were having trouble staying committed.
The weight fluctuated for that reason.
And despite the fact that a nutritionist designed the plan, it turned out to be harder to stay on than we would have expected.
And if a diet's not sustainable, it's not going to be successful.
Therefore, the probiotic diet is eliminated from our great diet showdown.
I know you're crestfallen, but can I say something?
When we eliminate a diet, it means it's not the best diet for the average American.
But this is a case where I think it should be a layer of a lot of diets.
I think you should pick a diet that you like and then put this underneath that diet as something you're going to do as well, because it'll fit into so many of your programs.
So, anyone who's interested, we're going to put the whole diet plan on drraj.com.
I want to thank Vanessa and Francis very much for being part of this.
And the big experiment up next in our Great Diet Showdown the diet that delivered the most rapid results in the first month.
But will it win?
Stay with us.
Packaged deli meat, they have nitrates, sugar, food starch, they mash it up, it looks like that.
Which of these deli meats are best for you?
The healthiest deli meats by brand.
That's coming up Friday on Dr. Oz.
It's my great diet showdown.
A diet of liquid meals had to be included, but it's one of the most controversial ways to lose weight.
Can a protein shake diet, one of these, really help you trim down?
And is it really all that healthy for you?
So we got some eye opening statistics back from our testers who tried the protein shake diet.
In two months, they were each down an average of 15 pounds.
It's a lot of weight loss.
But here's the big question.
Does this rapid weight loss translate into sustainable year long weight loss?
That's how you win the competition.
So please take a look at a typical day on the protein shake diet.
Hi Dr. Oz, I'm Kimberly from the Twin Cities of Minnesota.
I participated in the Great Diet Showdown.
Here's a typical day for me on the protein shake diet.
I lost a total of 28 pounds with seven in the first month.
I am fighting to keep it all off.
Breakfast for me is usually a delicious protein shake followed by a mid-morning snack, usually of nuts or fresh green veggies.
Lunch for me is another protein shake.
followed by a mid-afternoon snack, usually a piece of whole fruit and a cheese stick or one of my favorites, these lettuce wraps and more green veggies.
When dinner rolls around, I have a nice portion of protein followed by even more veggies.
I'd like to thank you, Dr. Oz, for offering me great success on this great plant.
Remember, each diet was created by a nutritional advisor.
Registered dietitian Maya Fellow created this one.
And the dieters were given six shake options, each made with a very specific formula made by Maya.
So you had a base, right?
It could be nut milk or Greek yogurt.
Then you had healthy fat and protein, often combined like an avocado or nut butter.
Then you had a fruit, and they had leafy greens, right?
So all these things are good for you.
But one of the dieters, Laura, is here because I want her to walk you through what it was like being on this diet.
So, Laura, thank you very much.
Hi.
All right, so you get these diet shakes, which are an attractive color of green made from blending up healthy foods.
Yes.
Walk me through what it was like for you and what a typical day was like.
Okay, so a typical day is like you make your shakes.
So I have two shakes a day, two snacks a day, and then a healthy dinner.
So shake, snack, shake, and snack, and then dinner.
And you weren't hungry with this breakup?
I actually really wasn't.
My shakes were really thick and hearty, believe it or not.
And in the beginning, I loved it.
It was amazing.
The first month I took off 10 pounds, I was like, woohoo!
Oh my goodness.
Yeah, it was great.
Yeah, it was amazing.
Like, I was like, yoohoo!
Woohoo!
So, the first month I took off 10 pounds, everybody at work was like, oh my gosh, what are you doing?
You look like amazing.
So, what did you not like about the diet?
I'm trying to figure out can the average viewer eat a liquid diet?
Absolutely.
If I can do it, yeah, absolutely.
And you think you could have eaten or drunk a liquid diet for an entire year?
And it's a hard question.
That is a hard question, but I would say yes.
You weren't bored of having just the shakes?
I honestly wasn't, and honestly, it saved me a ton of money on groceries.
It's way cheaper to make a shake, like honestly.
So, I'm going to put the diet on drroz.com because you speak so nicely of it, and you actually had success with it.
Yes.
Let me share my thoughts in general with protein shake diets.
I think it's a great jump start.
You witnessed that.
Rapid results will keep people motivated, so they keep pushing forward, and the protein shake contains a balance of vital nutrients, all good things.
Right.
What didn't I like about it?
And I'm going to be honest about this because I make some tough decisions about the top 10 diets in America that you're all trying.
So, based off the results in this group, half of the people couldn't stay committed.
Okay.
That's why I was trying to find out for you.
I got a little bored.
Got a little bored.
Yeah.
Which is, I would expect if I was just drinking this, no matter how colorful it is after a couple months, you get a little bored.
And when people fell off the diet, it was hard to get remotivated, right?
Because either you're on the diet or you're off the diet, it's unrealistic as a lifestyle to just drink meals instead of eating meals.
You lose that mouth sensation.
That's what I sort of liked about this.
Yeah.
Because if you, If you're tempted to eat more because of the taste and the feel of food in your mouth, having a liquid diet takes away a lot of those triggers.
But I don't think you can do that for the rest of your life.
So the protein diet will not be the winner of the great diet showdown.
I understand.
You're very good.
So we've got four diets left in our experiment.
Which one's going to come up on top?
Find out about the diets that are still in the running on drrs.com.
You might want to join one of them because they're working for a lot of people.
We'll be right back.
Can the breakaway hit of the year, this little fidget spinner, help you focus and improve memory?
How about this?
Really useful in diffusing stress.
The new tools that bust brain fog.
All nuance.
That's coming up tomorrow.
We are back and we have another ranked list.
You're not going to want to miss the five best uses for coconut oil.
Now, my go to tester, Renata, has tried out dozens of ways.
The internet tells you to use coconut oil.
There she's in her bathroom at home.
Oh, my goodness, making a lot of stuff happening right there.
Slicking it down, honey, slicking it down.
She slicks it down.
The first best use for coconut oil, according to Renata, is to make a DIY body scrub.
Yes.
You're into that, huh?
Yes, absolutely.
Coconut oil is awesome for a body scrub.
And what better way to use something in your pantry, okay, to feel delicious and luxurious than other than getting a body scrub, okay?
You do have soft skin.
I like that.
I like that.
So, how do you make it?
So, this is how you make it.
You can use salt that's in your pantry or some brown sugar that's in your pantry, okay?
You get half a cup of coconut oil, okay, and then you just pour it on in there, all right?
You see how nice that is?
You eat the leftovers.
I was just about to say, I'm making a Cake with the leftovers.
You can't.
Well, did I say cake?
Okay, so look, look, feel how nice that is.
Let me put that on you, okay?
Oh, nice.
Isn't that gorgeous?
Let me keep going.
Delicious.
Yes, honey, yes.
Get the fingers, the fingers.
Oh, now you want to run down, okay?
You want to be like me.
It feels good.
Yes, absolutely.
But like I said, just in your pantry, coconut oil and some good old brown sugar or salt, and it lasts a long time.
One or the other, you can't put them together.
One or the other.
You're salty.
All right, the next best use for coconut oil is to replace makeup remover.
Y'all are going to love this.
YouTuber Elizabeth Rudas has over 11 million views on her channel and she swears by it.
Take a look.
Hi, Dr. Oz.
My name is Elizabeth Rudas and I am a civil engineer who loves to play with makeup.
Taking it off, on the other hand, can be a little time consuming sometimes and can even hurt if you're not using the correct products.
Fortunately, however, I came across coconut oil a few years ago and really haven't used anything else since.
It makes taking everything off, including stubborn waterproof mascara, very, very easy.
And all I use is coconut oil and some baby wipes.
That's it.
Let me show you.
What a smile, but she did really well, didn't she?
Yeah, she took it right on off.
Next best use, next best use, yes, is to use it as a shaving tool.
You can use this in a pinch, okay?
And what I mean by in a pinch is if you run out of the stuff in the can, who says you need lather to shave, okay?
So let me get you together over here.
I'll shave me.
Yes, I'm gonna shave you, okay?
So you can use it.
You wanna do my back?
I'm gonna do your leg.
Come on, so pull your pan up over there.
Oh my, what in the world is going on down here?
Here.
This is what they gave me.
I need.
Something better.
I need a weed whacker.
Okay.
But I'm going to do the best I can.
Okay.
So we're going to just take the solid coconut oil, put it on there.
Okay.
And just like a balm, just like a shaving balm, you can get it right on off.
White House Criticism and Looks00:08:07
Okay.
Now, like, I mean, you're a little.
I trust you.
Yeah.
Trust me.
Look, there it is.
It's coming right on off.
Oh, I think I got you.
Show this.
Look at this.
Can you all see how much hair she took off my leg?
That's ridiculous.
My poor leg.
I need a weed whacker.
What is this?
All right, so in theory, in theory, it wasn't so hairy.
That looks pretty good, actually.
Yes, absolutely.
And you don't need, who said you need lather?
You don't really need lather.
The coconut oil exfoliates and moisturizes and gets it on off.
And then when you're done, actually, you don't even have to wash it.
Just rub it on in.
Rub it on in.
Make you nice and shiny.
I'm going to get a little rhinocytosis there.
Right there, R-O-W.
All right, everybody, you head over to drraj.com.
You get the last two great beauty uses of coconut oil.
They're wonderful.
Be right back.
Up next, the most famous twins in the world.
First twins, Jenna and Barbara Bush, are here.
They're revealing the truth about growing up in the public eye.
Got some advice for Donald Trump's children.
Don't go away.
Listen to them.
Only once, once in American history have twins been first daughters in the White House.
Their grandfather and then father both served as president of the United States, making them part of an American family dynasty.
Today, twins Jenna and Barbara are taking us behind the headlines, revealing for the first time ever on our show the privilege and difficulty of growing up together in the public eye.
Please welcome co authors of Sisters First, Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Pierce Bush.
Can we see you again?
I'm happy to see you.
Thanks for having us.
Come join us.
Okay, we will.
They're paternal twins, just to be clear.
Yes.
You tell them apart.
We look very different.
So, I got so much to ask you.
We have some games to play about twins, which we'll get to in a second.
Okay.
But you were both very young when your grandfather, the first President Bush, was in the White House.
What are your first memories of those days?
Well, the White House is pretty magical.
We were seven, which was a good lens to see Washington, D.C. politics through, I have to say.
Is that so?
And when.
About the right age, I think.
Yes.
Because it's even better.
I wish.
Sometimes I was still seven.
No, but when we got to the White House, we walked up and we met the florist.
And she said, come make a bouquet in the flower shop, which for like young DIYers, which was, you know, DIY, it wasn't called DIY.
No, it was crafts.
It was crafts.
Crafts.
But for us to go down into the flower shop was magical.
And then when I got married to Henry, she did the flowers for my wedding.
Oh, yeah, I got it.
So I think, you know, the people that work at the White House make it truly magical.
Magical.
So when your father became president, now you're big enough to understand some of the criticism that you're feeling, which happens to anyone who's in the public eye.
How did you deal with that criticism?
Well, I think that was definitely the harder part of being the daughters of a president, it's really difficult to divorce the fact that you love someone deeply.
It's really hard to hear criticism about them.
And so I think it became clear to both of us.
I had gone away to school that year.
I went to Yale and I didn't know a single person there.
And Yale is a very Political campus, and so I had to learn quickly that it wasn't personal against my dad, it was for another candidate.
Um, so you know, I don't know that anyone was for my dad except for me at Yale.
Are you the only one that voted for it?
I don't know, maybe.
Um, but I knew that it was people were pro another man, and it wasn't anything against my dad, and I just had to hold really deeply to the fact that I knew who he was, and that's what mattered to me.
But the criticism has gotten very personal.
And I remember, Jen, when your dad was president, there was a New York Post headline.
Jenna and tonic.
I know, which is false.
I don't like tonic water.
It should have been Jenna and soda.
There are the headlines Jenna and tonic, busted again in margarita.
Are those the real headlines?
We mocked them up a tiny bit.
Those are the words, though.
Those were the words.
Yeah.
I mean, how stressful is that for you as a young woman, just coming of age, trying to figure out your life?
And now everybody, the glare is on the two of you.
Well, it was hard.
You know, it was embarrassing.
In fact, I don't even know the real headlines because I tried to stay away from the headlines.
I was embarrassed, of course.
And I, but at the same time, I feel like kids.
And I was, I was 19 and 20, should be allowed to make mistakes.
Teenagers, no matter who their dad is.
What did dad say to you when he would see some of these non supportive headlines?
Yeah, well, I apologized to him because I did make mistakes.
And the first time, he was like, No, I'm sorry.
I promised you normalcy.
And we were all a little naive, but I promised you normalcy, and this isn't normal.
The second time, it was a different conversation.
I'd love to hear your advice for the current First family, who's certainly getting a lot of criticism, more than I believe you even got.
What happens to advice for Barron, who's 11 years of age?
Yeah.
I mean, it's hard enough to be 11.
So, what would you tell him?
Well, I think my advice is actually to everybody besides Barron, and that's that he's a kid and he's 11 and he should be allowed to be a kid.
So, my advice really would be to let him be a kid and live a normal life.
We wrote letters to Malia and Sasha Obama.
When their dad became elected, and then again when they left the White House.
And really, it's because we saw ourselves in them so much.
They were the same age we were when our grandpa became president.
And then the second letter, they were going off to college, and it really was more of like a battle cry, like to everybody else, leave them alone and let them make mistakes because they, it's not like they said to their dad, hey, I have an idea, let's run for president.
Kids, true children, don't have, you know, we cried when our dad told us he was going to run.
Also 16, so.
But still, we cried.
Yeah.
Was the crying related to that announcement or just crying because you were 16?
Well, probably both, actually.
But we cried because we didn't want, you know, we wanted to be normal and we wanted to have a normal college experience.
We also told him he was going to lose.
Yeah.
You did?
Yes.
We actually publicly apologized to him last week.
Yes, we needed to do a public apology.
But we were like, Dad, you can run, but you're going to lose.
What did he say when you told him that?
Thanks a lot.
Yeah.
He's got a lash.
What he used to say is when we were teenagers and acted like teenagers was, I'm always going to love you, so stop trying to make me not.
That's a good line.
Yes, stop trying to make me not.
Now, you watched the last election together, I understand.
What are your thoughts about the state of the nation?
Your thoughts about the election itself?
Well, we did.
I mean, the election is kind of the defining factor that we decided to write the book afterwards.
We live four blocks away from each other in New York, and I went over to Jenna's to watch the results come in, and it got later and later.
And I ended up spending the night, and Henry was out of town.
My husband.
Her daughter came and woke us up in the morning, and it was another reason for us to reflect on the fact that we've been through, we've woken up in bed together on a lot of elections.
We've had a partner throughout our life as our twin, and that was another big moment when we woke up with each other.
Were you happy or not, or distressed?
I think, I mean, I think we were surprised, like the rest of the country.
I mean, I work for a news organization, I don't think anybody really predicted it.
I think the thing is, is that I have two little girls now, and you know.
Political party aside, women on both sides weren't talked about that kindly.
There was a lot of talk about looks, appearance.
And the other day, my daughter Mila said about her baby sister, Mommy, Poppy's going to rule the world, which was the sweetest thing for an older sister to say.
And I said, Well, maybe Poppy could.
You know, maybe Poppy could be president.
And she said, But mom, presidents are all men.
Twins, Math, and Placentas00:04:31
And she's four, which I couldn't believe.
I was like, She's a genius.
But I think, you know, for Women, we need to make sure that we have each other's back and that there's more women leading in all fields.
You know, the mother daughter relationship that you're reflecting on is complex.
Certainly yours is colored by the relationship you have with your mom.
How has that changed?
What kind of parenting do you do?
Well, our mom is the best.
Our mom is the best, but we realized in writing this she was an only child whose first memory was watching her little baby brother in the hospital pass away.
She'd always wanted siblings.
She knew her infertility is run in my mother's side of the family for generations.
And so I think watching the two of us together, the inverse of an only child, are twins.
Two of us at once.
So, watching us, somebody asked her the other day, Did they ever make you feel left out?
And she goes, I still sometimes feel left out.
But we adore her.
And in so many ways, I want to emulate how she was.
Well, I'm very proud of the relationships you've built together and with your parents.
So, up next, I'm going to change gear.
Okay.
I have a surprise for the Bush twins.
I'm going to reveal things they don't even know about themselves.
Oh, wow.
You want to stay tuned.
We're right back.
Packaged deli meat.
They have nitrates, sugar, food starch.
They mash it up.
It looks like that.
Which of these deli meats are best for you?
The healthiest deli meats by brand.
That's coming up Friday on Dr. Oz.
We're back with the first twins, Jenna and Barbara.
And since they are the most famous twins in the world, I started thinking about the science of twins.
You probably are all doing the same as I am.
So we're going to play a little game of twin or false.
Ooh, fun.
I'm going to reveal scientific information about twins.
And the Bush twins each have to guess if it is true or, in this case, twin or is it false?
Okay.
All right, twin or false.
Are you ready to go?
Yes.
We are.
Are you confident?
Yes, I think maybe.
Who usually wins these games?
Well, Barbara missed one math problem on our SAT.
So, if it has to do with math or math, I would wear a pin if I were you.
Yes.
People are clapping.
Is that true?
One?
You missed one question?
Yes.
One math question.
If you could have just gotten that one question.
Well, what's that one question?
I don't know.
All right.
First question, right?
Fraternal twins have different fingerprints, but identical twins have the same fingerprints.
Twin.
Twin.
Who thinks that's twin or true?
No one.
Everybody's right.
Barbara's right.
False.
Barbara's right.
She switched.
She gets it.
It's interesting.
Compare your fingerprints to each other.
You notice they're all different?
Now, you're fraternal twins.
They're supposed to be different.
Yes.
But your fingerprints aren't genetic.
They're formed when you're in your mother's womb by the fluid washing your fingers.
What?
Yes.
All your fingerprints were created actually not by your genes, but how the world touched you when you were still being formed.
Oh, that's beautiful.
Okay.
I gave that one to Barbara because she twisted and switched real quickly.
All right.
One to nothing.
Barbara's leading.
And she's good at math.
She knows how to keep ahead.
Number two question.
Are you ready?
Fraternal twins have two placentas while they're in utero.
True, twin.
I said it.
You have to do something different.
Well, I think that's true.
I had to think.
Okay, I said it first.
Twin.
She said it first.
Twin.
We each have a placenta or we each have two placentas?
No, we.
I'm glad you're good at math.
No, you don't get four placentas.
It's either one each or one together.
I love this.
I'm going to each have one each.
I already said it.
True.
Barbara, how about I give this?
I'm giving that to Jenna.
I'm giving that to Jenna.
It was a try, actually, but I'm going to give it to Jenna to make things closer.
You know, it's interesting.
Fraternal twins, they always have two placentas, and they can sometimes grow together, and we actually have a picture of your placenta.
Can I put it up, please?
Yeah.
Yeah, your mom's dad, your dad sent this to us.
You've got to be kidding.
I am kidding.
Of course, I don't have it.
I was like, I started to get slightly nauseous.
I was nauseous.
I called W, and he said, no, I'm not giving it to you, but he has the picture.
Okay, last one.
Tiebreaker.
This is for all the marbles.
You ready?
Okay.
Fraternal twins have more shared DNA than regular siblings.
Twin or false?
False.
False.
Vision Learn Saves Sight00:05:02
That's a confident statement.
I'm a middle.
I don't know.
I'm a middle.
Oh, you're a middle.
Okay, I'm going with true just to stir the pot.
False.
It's true.
It's actually false.
Yes.
You won.
Jenna has won.
Fraternal twins are the exact same as regular people who are born without having the companionship for nine months in uterus.
I've adored having you both.
Thank you so much, Dr. Oz.
Fun loving you.
Listen, pay attention to what they wrote.
Tristers first.
Figure it out.
Share it.
Give it to your friends.
There it is.
Cute little things.
We'll be right back.
Thank you so much.
And the breakaway hit of the year.
This little fidget spinner helps you focus and improve memory.
How about this?
Really useful in diffusing stress.
The new tools that bust brain fog.
All nuance.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Now, y'all know I'm a surgeon, and we're all problem solvers, and that's why I'm in awe of people that find simple, elegant solutions to big problems that have a clear impact.
Take a look, see what I mean.
At first glance, some problems seem too hard and too expensive to solve.
Like, how do you improve grade performance of American students in low income communities?
One group took a second glance at that question, and a very correctable problem came into focus.
I would get headaches while I read, and that caused me not to like reading.
They found that poor grades correlated with lack of eye care and access to glasses.
And that's when Vision to Learn was born.
They saw this epidemic and stepped up to offer.
For a solution, kids weren't getting the glasses they need and nobody was doing anything about it.
Their circumstance prevented them from actually going to the doctor.
They might not have access to transportation, can't get time off of work, language barriers.
For a whole host of reasons, many, many kids were falling through the cracks.
Vision Learn solves the problem.
We bring the clinic to the kids.
They get a prescription custom to them, they get to pick the style, the friend they like.
Vision to Learn has already had a huge impact on thousands of kids' lives, providing eye exams to over 95,000 children.
And glasses to over 85,000.
What we've proven is this makes a difference.
And the proof is in their grades.
I'm here with Austin Buechner, who founded Vision to Learn.
And one of their mobile vans is right outside the studio with some kids getting eye exams as we speak.
There they are.
No pain, no problems.
I love seeing it.
And I'm glad to see it's happening right now at the show.
So, how do folks watching right now bring this to their communities to deal with this education issue?
Well, thanks for having us.
It's simple.
They could be that local hero.
It starts with just walking in the principal's office, letting her know this program exists.
They together can go on the website, call us, call me, we'll get there.
They can send a letter to their governor, activate the community.
This is all about giving the community the tools to help solve a simple problem.
So, what I love about Vision Alarm, the biggest thing, it takes a stigma out of getting glasses.
Because you know, no little kid wants to walk into school and think they're not as good as the other little kids.
So, how do you actually accomplish that?
Yeah, we start with that one kid, they're four eyes.
They'll never bring their glasses to school.
So, we bring in sports stars.
We make a little graduation ceremony.
We call them out individually and say, This is empowering you.
This is your chance.
You're special.
You're great.
Come on, we got a picture of NBA star Blake Griffin sitting with the cools looking really cool in their glasses.
And they're like, Listen, I'm no Blake Griffin, but I want to make some kids feel very special today.
So, I want to invite Cameron and Jasmine from Shortledge Academy Elementary School in Wilmington, Delaware, where I actually grew up.
Come on, our kids.
It's your big moment.
Nice to meet you both.
They're so cute.
They get cuter all the time.
So, Jazz Neal, you stand over here, honey.
Right there.
Okay.
And I'm going to have Cameron's glasses.
Are we ready?
It's a big moment.
It's a big moment?
You ready?
You happy about these?
Yes.
Okay.
Put them over your nose, I'm told.
Here, here we go.
Here we go.
I'm going to help you.
Right there.
Thank you.
How's it look?
Looks good.
Can you guys see better?
Yeah.
You like it?
Can I get a selfie?
I'm going to see how you lay.
Smile.
One more.
Mel, I'm down here.
Oh, I love it.
I'm so proud of you.
They're smiling.
Just to give a child a smile.
It's magic.
They see the world in a different way, don't you?
It's just awesome.
Looking around, I love you guys.
Awesome.
Thank you very much.
Congratulations.
Vision to Learn team.
You keep pointing.
You're doing something really special for kids in America with this program, and it's definitely something new.
Everyone should be feeling good about.
So spread the word, everybody.
Remember, happy and healthy, it starts at home, doesn't it?
