Home Humidity and Insulation 00:12:16
HGTV's Property Brothers, Drew and Jonathan Scott.
I actually memorized how to tub it apart.
Drew's always in the tie.
I always wear the same shirt as you.
See how to make big health improvements to your home for under 10 bucks.
If you maintain your house properly, it costs you only a small maintenance fee as opposed to having to redo something major.
Then, can these dogs detect ovarian cancer?
A 90% accuracy rate is extraordinary.
Coming up next, we'll save lives today.
We got a great way to get healthy!
No more needs to pay attention to.
You do the best to keep your house safe, healthy, and running efficiently.
But there's always some room to do better without spending a fortune.
Today I've teamed up with the hosts of HGTV's Property Brothers, Drew and Jonathan Scott, to make the biggest health improvements to your home visit carefully all for under 10 bucks.
Then, the latest technology being used in cancer.
Could man's best friend become our first line of defense in detecting ovarian cancer?
Find out.
And Reality TV's Preachers of Atlanta are here with the spiritual, their fideset, with the spiritual prescription for your biggest health roadblocks.
But first, please welcome hosts of Property Brothers, Drew and Jonathan Scott.
Good, good, good to see you.
So I actually memorized before this show how to tell them apart.
Drew's always in the tie.
Drew, Ty, remind me if I make a mistake.
I always wear the same shirt as you.
Oh, yes, also that.
Also that.
All right, you guys have improving the lives of folks in so many ways because you're improving their homes.
But the biggest concern a lot of our viewers have is the cost.
So how do you do it on a budget?
I will answer that question if you answer a question about a rash that I have here.
Pull that out, put that.
We'll do it later.
Later.
No, I mean, the big thing is a lot of people think of the aesthetic of their home, how beautiful it is, but they never think of the health.
And we have so many little things that we can educate people on on how to solve those health issues.
A lot of it is if you maintain your house properly, it costs you only a small maintenance fee as opposed to having to redo something major.
All right, so we broke it down into a couple categories.
The first is energy efficiency of the home.
Jonathan, this is a strange thing that I would think to focus on, but you argue it's probably one of the best places to start.
Yeah, absolutely.
If you're noticing that you have a draft inside your home, not only is it causing you to have higher electricity bills, higher heating bills, it also can be letting allergens in from outside.
And it usually happens around your windows and doors.
So the first thing we always say, and it's a matter of a few dollars getting some caulk and just caulking around your windows and doors, it's very easy.
If I can do it, if Drew could do it, actually, a monkey could do it.
But it's just a matter of getting into the corner here and running a bead.
And then when you run down that with your finger to seal it in there, just that little thing right there has just sealed any of the little drafts coming in from behind your casing.
Do not wipe that on me.
That's why I sell it for it.
But the funny thing too is just having a quarter whole size amount of air coming in can affect your energy efficiency by like 10% in your home.
Another really easy thing to do that people don't think about in the winter you want to keep your heat in, just closing blinds or just having your curtains over top of the window, that makes a huge difference for reducing your bills.
Doesn't cost anything.
It doesn't cost anything.
And you don't have to put a show on when you're air drying in the morning.
I do like to air dry like this in the morning with my neighbors.
Hi neighbors.
Too much info.
You got to go dinner as twits.
All right.
You guys have an at-home test that I've heard about.
I wish you demonstrated for everybody because understanding where the drafts are and whether it's important enough to fix them is important.
So I brought you all the things you asked me for.
Here's some incense.
Thank you.
Here a moment in the sun.
Go up.
I love my incense because I like setting the mood.
But also, all you need to do is light the tip of an incense and then hold it up.
And you'll see, as you see the bit of smoke coming off the top there, even if I just hold that out there, I'll blow it out.
You can see the smoke coming up.
It'll rise and it'll move towards wherever the air leak is.
And it will give you a simple, cost-effective solution.
You can see here the smoke is moving this way, so we know that there's a little air leak over here because it's moving in this direction.
And also, it makes the room smell fantastic.
That's something too.
But that's the trick.
Go around all of your doors and windows with the incense, and you'll see as soon as a draft hits it, you'll see it'll just scoot all the smoke sideways.
And the best thing, too, is when you're done with your incense, when your contractor comes home at night, just put them in his pocket, he'll keep them smelling pretty.
If you set me on fire, I can't have open flame around my hair, there's too much hairspray.
All right.
The second big tip for energy efficiency has to do with lights.
You all think you know the lights that you're buying and whether they're a good investment.
But we're talking about changing the way America thinks about how we light ourselves.
What are we talking about?
Exactly.
Incandescent lights.
This is what most people have in their home, the older lights.
And this is a thing of the past.
Because if you look over here, this is an LED light.
This will last 25 times longer.
It uses 25 times longer.
It uses a tenth the amount of energy.
There's so many benefits.
Now, the one thing is a lot of people think it's too expensive to go LED, and that's fine.
It is a little more expensive, but if you think of the benefits in the long term, it's really worth it.
Yeah, and so a lot of people are using compact fluorescent bulbs right now because they're more cost-effective to put in in the beginning.
They're not quite as efficient as LED, but they still do a good job.
So what we usually say is in your high-traffic areas where you have the light on all the time, spend the extra dollars and get an LED bulb.
And like you said, it lasts 25,000 hours.
And then in the other areas, maybe if you can't afford to do all LED in the beginning, put in compact fluorescents.
But make sure when you do take the compacts out, they have mercury in them.
So you have to be very careful how you dispose of them.
I also have everything controlled by my phone, and you can put timers on lights as well.
It's a great thing.
It saves you energy, saves you time.
And the best two ways for LED, you can either pick them up in bulk, you can buy them online, or get them in bulk to save money, or just take them from your neighbor's house.
It's even better.
Yeah.
Yeah, if you go into the store quite often, you'll pay about eight bucks a bulb, anywhere from six to eight bucks a bulb.
You go on Amazon, you can get bulk packs sometimes for three bucks a bulb.
It's totally worth it.
And how many wattages did you get?
Anything.
So depending on what you have, I'll compare them to what incandescents were.
So it'll say on the LED box comparable to a 60-watt bulb, when in reality it's only using maybe six or eight watts.
All right, so we covered the big issue of efficiency around the house.
Let's talk about the quality of the air in your home.
Jonathan, this is something that a lot of folks have gotten all wrong, especially when allergy season comes around.
People are panicked about what's competing outdoors.
Yeah, well, nobody ever remembers that if you have an HVAC system, you have to change your filters.
You can't just leave.
So some people I know have lived in a house for three years and never changed their filter.
So this, here's the education.
This is an air filter.
You need to change it.
So you can go in and you can get really cheap ones, but they're not really getting all those pollutants out of the air, all the allergens.
So upgrade, get something that's a HEPA filter.
It's only like eight bucks.
I have a whole stack of them at home, so I never have to remember to go out and buy them.
And if you don't actually have this size, it's a standard size, you can actually just get a sheet like this.
It's the exact same thing.
It does the same job, but you can cut it to fit whatever you need for in your filter.
The big thing we try to tell people, they don't think about it, they think of all the allergens out there in the environment.
But we actually saw studies that inside your home, there are more allergens and more things that can affect you than you have outside your home in the environment.
So it's so important to make sure that you're not, it's a trap.
It's one big box in your home.
You don't want to keep circulating something that's bad for your health.
Yeah, and we see it alive even in the wintertime because you literally are surrounding yourself with the worst of the worst.
How often do you have to change them?
I know three years is too long.
No, at least every season, usually.
And especially if you just did a construction project at home, there's a lot of dust that kicks up.
You definitely want to change it right after that.
In fact, after construction, it's good to clean out all your ducts as well.
Yeah.
I'm not doing any construction, thankfully.
Solution number two about the air.
Let me turn it into a garden.
They're allergen-fighting plants.
I can never tell which ones to get.
So you picked a couple for us that are affordable and that work really well.
Yeah, I mean, one big thing, you have to think about what is good for you.
Certain plants actually can take the oxygen out of a space, and certain plants will put oxygen back in.
So for example, you have an IV, which is great for health.
Not only does it clean the air, it also will clean the fecal matter out of the air.
Disgusting, I know, but it can be a great thing to have in a bathroom.
For sure?
Yes.
They've done tests, which is crazy.
In controlled environments, they put different plants and they put fecal matter in these containers.
And this plant, this ivy, this one, scrubs the air of fecal matter.
So right now, I don't want to gross anybody out, but right now, there's a small percentage of fecal matter that we're breathing in.
So, yeah, this takes care of it.
It comes in handy.
Just fixing it.
Fixing the problem.
You have to be careful, though, because plants like these are poisonous to dogs.
So you want to always research any plant you're putting into your home.
You want to make sure that your cat, your dog, they're not going to eat it and have a problem.
Have them elevated.
And something like the snake plant, the snake plant helps convert CO2 to oxygen, so that's healthy for you as well.
It's always nice, though, inside your home to have some green.
It's a great thing to do.
So incorporating this into your design in a small amount.
You don't want to go overboard.
You don't want to have your entire living room all ivy, but it would definitely help.
Or just don't be gross and have fecal matter in your house.
Oh, please.
Who has a fecal matter problem?
I'll hand this out and break up next, the at-home test.
You can take to keep you and your family safe.
Stick around.
Who needs this?
Who needs this?
Next, Drew and Jonathan show us what to look for all over the house.
It's...
It comes down to saving money.
From humidity to insulation.
Easy, simple, and inexpensive.
They have simple tools you can use to improve the health of your home.
Coming up.
Are your floors putting you at risk?
The health of your family started changing.
Watery eyes, sore throat, nosebleach.
Nosebleach.
Laminate wood floors.
Are they toxic?
Within a day of the flying and out of the house, all the symptoms were gone.
What you need to know are the safest flooring options for your home.
Plus, the Zika virus has us all on high alert.
Is your bug spray really safe and effective?
We investigate.
Next Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
They have an at-home series of tasks to keep you and your family safe.
The first one we're going to talk about is an at-home humidity test.
And I know humidity is an issue, but I didn't know there was a test that was easy and simple.
Easy, simple, and inexpensive.
Nobody wants to spend a fortune bringing someone in to tell them what the humidity levels are in their house.
So right here, what this is, you want to keep your humidity level between 30 and 50%.
So this here will tell you, and I always get this wrong, hygrometer?
Hygrometer, hygrometer?
Hygrometer?
I was hating potato.
The important thing is it tells you if there's going to be a problem in your home.
Biggest humidity problem areas are bathrooms and basements.
If you have that musty smell in your basement, it means there is already a humidity problem.
And humidity can promote mold growth, which obviously when those spores get in the air, major, major health concerns.
So you want to test it, and that will tell you if you need to take action.
If it drops too low and it goes below 30%, you'll wake up with sore throats and it'll be very dry in the home, so you need to get a humidifier.
A lot of clients complain about that, and that means you can have bad airflow, and it also means that you can have too little humidity level.
So you want it between 30% minimum and 50% max in that range?
And if it goes over that, that's when you start to notice that real musty smell and things like that.
And you need to find out what's causing that.
Sometimes in a basement, it's as easy as painting the slab to prevent moisture from seeping up through the concrete.
Los I want is 33% in here.
Is that right, guys?
34%.
See, it's perfect for our audience.
Hold on, let's get a little sweaty.
Let's get a little sweaty in here.
All right.
Is that going up at all?
Get the Ivy plant back here.
It's not a slash meat.
There you go.
The next area, and within a few seconds here, is insulation around the home, which is a black box for most people, myself included.
Why shouldn't we overlook it and give us the ABCs on how to do this right?
It also comes down to saving money.
And nobody wants to overspend on their utilities if they don't have to.
And insulation is so important.
What I love, you can see some examples here.
In the first one, this is my favorite, invisible insulation.
Well, the sad thing is a lot of older houses, they don't have insulation.
You know, we live in Vegas, and a lot of the houses that were built in the 50s, 67, they didn't have insulation, and then they're just empty walls, so you're wasting all that energy.
So, this is your basic bat insulation, pink foam, fiberglass insulation.
It's inexpensive.
Well, Drew, Drew has a phobia of pink insulation, so that's why I always try and attract it.
He always throws me with my suit on in the pink.
I can imagine doing their mother.
Oh, my gosh.
Oh, my God.
Just imagine having to raise them.
I will get payback.
Dogs Detecting Cancer Scents 00:12:41
I know.
If you don't like the fiberglass, you can spend a little bit more and you can get the cotton fiber.
It's actually 85% recycled material, much more efficient.
It's a little from what?
Yeah, it's so it's like denim.
It's like it's like sliced up denim and everything, recycled materials, and that fills the wall cavity too.
They can blow it in.
But it not only is a little bit more expensive, but not only is it more efficient, but it also is fire-rated.
Mice and pests aren't going to affect it.
What I love, though, is the spray foam at the end because if there is any little nook and cranny, it will fill it.
You just spray it in, a professional will come in and spray it.
I don't recommend doing it yourself.
Anytime I've seen someone try and do it themselves, they spray too much, and then all of a sudden, over the next 10, 20 minutes, it starts to expand.
You never would.
So they come in with a machine and they do it with a wand and do the whole wall.
You don't want to be in there with 50 cans of expanding foam trying to do it.
I can see this is about to burst, by the way.
Oh, yeah.
We have near pros doing it.
Listen, it's been wonderful having you on.
Thank you.
Absolutely wonderful.
Check out the Proxy Brothers new book.
Dream Hauling Scores Out.
Thanks, Scott Brothers.
We'll be right back.
There you go.
You should get some wine.
Coming up next, could man's best friend become our first line of defense in detecting disease?
Elizabeth is geared to investigate what these animals with superior sense of smell are capable of.
Can these dogs really snip out cancer NMS?
Find out next.
Apple, pear, banana.
Remember those old body shapes you used to have?
We're tossing those out and rewriting the book.
I'm giving you a whole new way to look at your body.
Find out which one you are to maximize weight loss results and what to eat for your body type.
This actually looks like a pancake, doesn't it?
Plus, how this pair of jeans can make any body type look 10 pounds thinner.
That's coming up Friday on Dr. Oz.
Our next investigation involves the latest technology in cancer research.
The highly developed sniffers of these three dogs.
I'm serious, this is big stuff.
Could man's best friend become our first line of defense in detecting ovarian cancer?
I recently sent investigative reporter Elizabeth Leamy on a fact-finding mission to meet these highly developed dogs.
Remember these dogs, McBain, Tsunami, and Foster, because they may become famous for finding a way to detect one of the most elusive and deadly diseases, ovarian cancer.
It is a silent killer because the signs associated with it are so vague that people don't recognize that they have it until it's very far advanced.
Veterinarian Cynthia Otto heads the Penn Vet Working Dog Center at the University of Pennsylvania, where they're training dogs to use their keen sense of smell to identify the unique odor of ovarian cancer.
They have an incredible sense of smell.
So compared to humans, they have more of the little receptors in their nose that capture the odors and they have a bigger part of their brain that processes the odors.
But mostly it's because they work so well with us.
Here's how the trainers help dogs hone their incredible skills.
They take blood samples from both healthy women and ovarian cancer patients and put them into ventilated cartridges attached to a wheel.
When the dog smells the odor of ovarian cancer, then what their natural response that they've been trained to do is sit.
Good girl.
Only one cartridge holds the ovarian cancer tissue.
Can the dogs sniff it out?
How accurate are they?
Incredibly accurate.
They're really working about 90% of the time.
They're able to tell us, yes, this is the sample that is from the cancer patient.
A 90% accuracy rate is extraordinary.
There is no other early detection test for ovarian cancer that can beat these guys.
So you may be wondering, will cancer-sniffing dogs someday be a fixture in doctors' offices?
No.
Instead, chemist Dr. George Predi from the Minnell Center is collaborating with Dr. Otto to try to capture the dog's unique sense of smell and mimic it in a handheld screening device.
What we're trying to do is build an electronic nose that will detect the odor signature of the cancer that the dogs tell us is there.
That goal may not be so far-fetched.
McBain, Foster, and Tsunami have proven they can smell cancer.
And that skill might someday save your life.
It's a great story.
And Elizabeth Theme is here for more details.
So when will doctors be able to use dogs to stiff out cancers?
And why can't we just use traditional medical tests that are out there?
Listen, conventional medicine has nothing on these dogs, at least for detecting ovarian cancer very early.
They are amazing, but we're really trying to capture the dog's unique ability and turn it into conventional medicine with this idea of a mechanical nose that could do the same thing and get the detection to many more people that much more quickly.
I'd rather, it's probably true that some dogs are better than others.
Do they have an insight about that?
Which are the best dogs to get to stiff out cancer in you, for example?
Okay, well, they do say that some of the hunting dogs were bred for their sense of scent.
Dogs do have many more smell receptors than we do, especially those with longer noses.
In this case, as you saw, they're using a German Shepherd, a Labrador retriever, and a Springer Spaniel.
And the amazing thing is just how sensitive they are.
I mean, can you imagine what's like a tsunami hitting them when you cook dinner in your house and your dog is there?
I'm putting Rosie to work because she's a labrador.
So I want to understand what the future is going to look like.
Are we going to be able to capture these aromas and be able to use them?
They think they can do it.
It is quite a task, though, because these dogs, they can detect what I was amazed by.
One drop of blood plasma is all these dogs needed.
And they can actually detect that one drop of blood in two Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Parts per trillion is what we're talking about here.
If they can capture that, it will be groundbreaking.
Wouldn't that be cool?
Yes.
Because people have been talking about this for decades, but most of us in Western medicine discounted it as impossible.
Pooh-pooed it, frankly.
Well, we're used to the idea of clinical sterile things being good, and these are slobbering, shedding cutie pies, but they're amazing.
That save lives.
So the question then becomes, how much does your nose know when we come back how to use your sense of smell to find disease?
Stay there.
Coming up next, we just saw how dogs with their incredible sense of smell can detect cancer.
But can humans be capable of doing the same thing?
Are there cancer smells that even we can pick up?
The at-home smell test you can do to detect disease is next.
Are your floors putting you at risk?
The health of your family started changing.
Watery eyes, sore throat, nosebleeds.
Nosebleach, laminate wood floors.
Are they toxic?
Within a day of the flooring being out of the house, all the symptoms were gone.
What you need to know, and the safest flooring options bring your home.
Plus, the Zika virus has us all on high alert.
Is your bug spray really safe and effective?
We investigate.
Next Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Don't ignore your sense of smell, even when it's the first warning that something is wrong.
I want you to meet my next guest who credits her dog with using her sense of smell to find her cancer.
Please welcome Diane and her Doberman, Troy.
What a beautiful dog!
That is the most beautiful dog, period, I've ever seen.
Isn't he handsome?
Hi, Troy.
Say hi, Dr. Oz.
So what's the story?
I'm fascinated by this.
Just so you understand all this, this is a true story.
So Troy started behaving a little differently.
Yeah, what happened?
We had taken him home.
He was about two and a half months old.
He still had his little puppy cones on his head.
And my husband insisted that he stay sleep in bed with us.
So he was in the middle of the two of us.
And he started persistently nuzzling.
This is not your ordinary sniffing.
This was like serious, I'm working hard here, sniffling.
And he was persistently leaning against my left breast and he kept pushing at it.
And I said, what the heck's going on?
And I would chew him away and he came back at it again.
And I finally started to itch because I'm highly allergic to his dander.
And that's when I felt the lump.
A breast lump.
Yes.
It was about at that, well, the next day I went to the doctor and I had been for a mammogram six months prior.
P.S. Girls, just do the self-breast examinations yourself because I went through the mammogram.
You go for the mammogram, you go, good for a year.
And this was six months later, and it was stage two, and it was already three centimeters.
So had it not been for this dog, honestly, who knows, that would have been right, puppy.
So you didn't think anything was out of the ordinary.
And his nuzzling was the first clue.
First time, he only did it once.
Thank God he's never done it ever again.
Are you okay, by the way?
Yes.
He looks well in the world.
Good.
Just like when I was petting him, is this called nuzzling me?
I just want to know if I'm going to be able to do it.
No, nuzzling is serious when he's really, he's really focused on it.
This is just plain sniffing and love.
So dogs and humans can actually use our noses to make an early diagnosis.
It's not the first time we've heard about a pet having it.
And I appreciate you sharing the story here because it's so compelling.
Dr. William Lee, who's always at the front lines of cancer research, he's a member of my core team.
He's been studying cancer smells that even humans, you and I, can pick up.
Hi, Dr. Oz.
Dr. Lee here.
It goes without saying that one of the things we're always looking for with cancer is early detection by any means necessary.
And sometimes it's a change in how you smell.
Here's what we know.
As cancers grow, some parts of the tumor can die and rot.
And this can create a terrible odor.
Colon cancers, for example, are associated with smelly bowel movements.
Some describe it like rotting meat mixed with natural gas.
And oral cancers, cancers of the mouth, can give your breath a terrible odor.
The worst bad breath you've ever had.
So my advice is, if you smell anything odd in your stool or your breath, it's time to call your doctor to have it checked out.
Cancer isn't the only disease we're able to smell.
Human and dog noses are able to pick up additional scents for other diseases too.
I'm going to put Nikki here to the test, both for your sense of smell, but also to see if you can pick up any abnormal odors.
How do you smell normally?
Is it okay?
Yeah.
No issues.
Any family history I should know about, issues you worry about?
No.
Pretty healthy.
I'm pretty healthy, Anthony.
You ready to go?
I'm ready.
All right, come on back here.
So this is a test for Alzheimer's.
And it turns out that one of the first scents that we start to lose when we start getting Alzheimer's is our sense of smell.
And so I'm going to show you a test everyone can do at home as well.
But you have to close, if you can't, close your eyes and face me.
Trust me now.
And I'm going to ask you to close one nostril, then the other.
Okay?
So let's put the ruler right here.
As you close your left nostril.
Ruler's there, okay?
Tell me when you, sorry.
Tell me when you start to smell what I have in front of you.
Now.
Now.
At, let's say 14, 13, 14 centimeters.
All right, you ready to do it again?
Close the other nostril.
Tell me when you smell it.
How about now?
Just checking.
Tell me when you smell it.
Now?
A little closer.
Seven, eight centimeters.
So here's the deal.
It turns out that folks who have Alzheimer's start to lose the scent on the left nose before the right nose.
I'm not diagnosing you.
I'm just pointing out interesting differences.
Now, who would have thought that different sides of our nose would smell differently unless you appreciate that those nose receptors are connected right to your brain?
It's more common in some kinds of dementias than others, but it's something that alerts us.
Now, researchers actually did a study showing that this difference was there.
It wasn't replicated in a follow-up one, but there's one study was pretty cool that they showed that.
And to me, it's a clue.
Any clue you can get to tip you off early is a worthwhile one, especially if all you need is a ruler and a jar of peanut butter because you can always eat the peanut butter afterwards.
Worse comes worse.
Useful?
Yes.
All right.
Test yourselves, everybody.
Spiritual Prescriptions for Healing 00:14:23

I am a more liberal pastor than traditional.
Other ministers and pastors do not understand my ministry.
I believe the best way to reach people is getting out there in the streets.
You get what I'm saying?
Taking God to the streets.
Pastor Kimberly Jones Pothier is a life coach, mentor, and leader of a movement she calls Concrete Hell in High Heels.
I preach in 2-2s.
I preach in combat foods or converse.
There's always going to be a kiln flare.
I preach better when I'm me.
I think it's awesome being a woman in ministry.
I'm honored.
And I love people back to life.
That's what I do.
When Pastor Canton Jones is administering at church, he works as a rapper, songwriter, and producer, spreading the word of God through the lyrics of hip-hop.
I'm a preacher.
I do music.
And it's my plan to bring the gospel to God's people in the flyest way possible.
Doing out-of-the-box things to bring people to Jesus Christ.
The preachers of Atlanta are here.
Idio, you guys are not about sermons behind a pulpit.
You're handing out cigarettes, condoms, I think, maybe.
You know, things that are sort of, they're controversial.
It's not what folks expect.
What Dandre committed you, convinced you to go beyond what was traditional?
Well, you got to meet them where they are.
You know, and I'm not saying that I will do it all the time, but anytime that it needs to be done, that's what I'm there for.
You know, you got 20 cigarettes in a box.
You got, you know, you walk in the street, you're lighting them up.
Hey, let me get a cig.
Talk to me about Christ.
I'll give you the cigarette.
We're talking about Christ.
Next thing you know, you're in the church.
I'm giving you what you want now, but at the end of the day, you're going to get what you need later on.
So it's a sacrifice.
Pastor Caddon, in medicine, I can take someone's temperature.
I can get lab results.
I can sort of tell if their health's in the right spot.
How do you do a spiritual checkup?
How does someone know they need help?
Well, I mean, sometimes they can analyze their emotions, joy.
We feel like God will give you joy in the midst of sorrow.
So a lot of times people are looking for happiness, but we feel like you can have joy that'll sustain you.
Another thing is, you know, when you talk about people holding grudges, unforgiveness, when you feel like you'll do better if somebody's doing worse, you know, and so that's spiritually unhealthy.
And then a lot of times you just got to look at do you feel like the results that you're getting in your life are the results that you want to have?
You know, and sometimes people are daily doing things that they're not happy with but not willing to change, and those are spiritually unhealthy.
Well, Pastor Kimberly, let's take that one step further.
What do folks get wrong most often about the health of their spirits?
You know, I think that we get so lost in life, you know, just trying to keep up with the Joneses, you know, trying to allow ourselves to get, get, get, that we don't pay attention to our insides.
We don't pay attention to what's going on.
Why am I walking around?
Why do I have everything in life going for me and yet I'm still so unhappy?
You know, why can I, why is this depression carrying me?
You know, and there's a thing called generational curses.
And I think that when people start realizing that you don't have to be like your DNA, you don't have to be like what your mom and daddy were.
You don't have to repeat cycles over and over.
It's one day taking a look in the mirror and saying, you know what, girlfriend, like today is the last day you stay depressed, you stay bound, you stay worried, you're going to get up, you're going to put one foot in front of the other, even if it feels like you're a turtle stuck in peanut butter, just get moving.
And so I think it's looking on the inside.
So Pastor Cash, if I'm a turtle fucking peanut butter, I'll be using that for the rest of my career.
You're even a bad.
You got a roadblock.
What are these roadblocks?
How do you get past them to help your spirit?
I will talk about habits.
Sometimes people have habits that things that they've been doing for all of their lives.
And it's so hard to break that habit.
You want change, but you continue to do the same thing or you continue to hang around the same type of people.
And so sometimes it's so hard to change, even though you want change so bad.
And I think that habits are one of the biggest roadblocks for people changing.
All right, so up next, the preachers of Atlanta are going to do what they do best.
They're going to get real with spiritual prescriptions for what's holding you back.
Stay here for the fireworks.
Coming up next, the preachers of Atlanta are sticking around to answer all your health questions.
Inspirational remedies, some of your biggest health roadblocks.
Soul-changing advice we can all use.
What's going on on the inside of me?
Are your floors putting you at risk?
The health of your family started changing.
Watery eyes, sore throat, nosebleach.
Nosebleach, laminate wood floors.
Are they toxic?
Within a day of the flying being out of the house, all the symptoms were gone.
What you need to know, and the safest flooring options for your home.
Plus, the Zika virus has us all on high alert.
Is your bug spray really safe and effective?
We investigate.
Next Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
It's up to you to get up and walk away from the pain.
How are you navigating being a father if you don't feel like you had a father?
What you do not want to be a part of anymore, you don't have to be a part of it anymore.
It ain't that easy.
It ain't that easy.
It's not.
You got to believe.
We're back with the preachers of Atlanta who are about to get real with some of the biggest roadblocks that are hurting your health.
Now, the preachers are here with their spiritual prescriptions for what's really holding you back.
We asked our audience members to share health issues that they just can't seem to shake.
So Tasha's going to start us off.
Tasha says there's a health issue.
She cannot shake.
What is that?
My health issue, Dr. Oz and pastors, is that I seem to get stressed out.
I'm a single mom with two children, and trying to balance work, church, and home can sometimes be very stressful where I find myself losing sleep at night and worrying a lot.
Well, since most of us are where you are, I'm glad you asked that question because we can get an answer to help a lot of us, especially Andrea.
Start us off.
What is the pastoral spiritual prescription for constant worrying?
Well, I mean, first of all, you got to give it to God.
If you're going to pray, then, you know, why worry?
You know, if you're going to worry, then don't pray.
It's just common sense.
You know, I was once a single mother, you know, married twice, and it was the stress that was upon me.
It was just unbelievable.
But, you know, I was dealing with Bozos.
That's why, you know, I had all that stress.
So God got rid of my Bozos and sent me my Boaz.
You get what I'm saying?
So you just pray to God.
Keep him first, and everything will be great.
It'll be wonderful.
So you just got to let it go.
Just let it go.
Have faith because faith without works is dead.
You got to believe for the unseen before you can see it with your physical eyes.
All right.
So you just give it to God and let him work it out.
Amen.
There are many ways of getting to that sense of calm.
Meditation can help as well.
You know, get past whatever barriers you may have to allowing your brain just to be quiet for a little bit.
But you can train yourself to do that and use whatever crutches work for you.
Next roadblock is something a lot of us are struggling with.
It's emotional eating.
Take a look.
Hi, Dr. Oz.
My name is Erica and I struggle with emotional eating.
I go to food for comfort, whether I'm happy, sad, or angry.
It's 10 a.m. and I literally already bought fudge bronze.
Do I really need them?
No, but it helps me.
When I'm stressed, I eat.
When I'm angry, I eat.
When I'm sad, I eat.
I just don't know what to do.
My weight has fluctuated even because of it.
I really need to get a handle on this.
Erica's pretty compelling.
So Castro Care Brother, why don't you help us with this?
What's the spiritual prescription for emotional eating?
Well, you know, I believe that so many of us go through it.
I think that women, of course, we have Thanks Eve, you know, we have issues every month anyway, and it makes us grab things.
And I think that, you know, when I walked through a divorce in 2006, I had that same issue where I just constantly would, it came from rejection.
You know, overeating comes from rejection.
It comes from, it doesn't talk back to you.
And it fills a void at that time.
And then after that, you stay shameful because your genes don't fit.
And it's like everything in your life is just falling apart.
And when I was going through my divorce in 2006, I was so broke down.
You know, you have to ask yourself, what's going on on the inside of me that has made me feel like I need to reach for things instead of getting an activity or getting involved in a support group or allowing yourself to start believing in yourself, lay hands on yourself, and say, God, you know, help me see myself the way you see me.
And I want to tell you something.
All right, I got to come over here because I haven't touched you really top of vertical.
I want you to know one thing: that nobody else can do it for you.
And you have to decide one day that you know what?
This food is not fulfilling a void on the inside of me.
And you need to do what I did.
I would get little post-it notes, and I would get post-it notes and I'd put them all over my house.
I would Google what does God say about me?
You know, not what my ex said about me, not what my dad or mom or whoever abandoned me said about me, but what does God say about me?
And He says that I'm awesome, He says that I'm wonderful.
He says that I made in His image and here knows, like all the things that we hate about ourselves.
He took so much time to create that, and sometimes we just need to remind ourselves.
And so I put little post-it notes all over.
And let me just tell you something else: I would see those post-it notes every day, and then they started outweighing everything my past said about me.
And then once you start getting joy back in your heart, you no longer want to reach for that stuff because you're so busy living, you don't even want to go to sleep at night because you're so excited about what life is bringing you.
And let me just tell you something else: give yourself permission to have meltdown every once in a while.
It's hard.
Are you okay?
Cry and get back up.
Let's go to Alex.
What's your issue options you might be helped with with a spiritual prescription with?
Well, I have a tendency to get pretty angry pretty quickly.
I have no patience, and it's just not beneficial to my life whatsoever.
What makes you angry?
Well, I have road rage, people with a lack of common knowledge.
I mean, I could go on if you really want me to.
Are these your friends over here?
Yes.
Did she get angry?
Oh, yes.
And what does she do when she gets angry?
She can yell, scream, she can go off.
Scratch.
She just gets that look, and you know, just leave her alone for a little while.
Your anger obviously hurts the heart, whether it's expressed or repressed.
But I suspect Pastor Canton helps us on this.
It probably does quite a bit in other areas.
I was a guy that had anger issues as well.
And I started living by this principle that every air condition has a vent.
And so where there's hot air coming out, there's cool air coming out on the other side.
And so you got to let your hot air out.
You kind of got to have people that you trust that you can go to and pour out.
You know, you have to, you know, not pour out on social media because those people don't love you.
You know, but you got to pour out in places where people can trust that information, where that you can cry in front of those people, that you can vent in front of those people.
And a lot of times there's a fear there that you haven't identified, that you're angry.
Sometimes you're really in road rage, but you're upset about a relationship or you're upset about a bill or you're upset about the thing, something else, but you're just acting out at that point in time.
And so what I learned to do is just have faith in what I know and not respond on what's going on because what's going on can change quickly, but what I know about God will never change.
And so when you start having faith and confidence in that, it's almost like, you know what?
I'm not going to let this thing ruin my day.
I'm not going to allow this thing to because, I mean, there are things that's going to come at you day one.
As soon as you get out, you know, you're going to be smiling and somebody's going to step on your nice little boots.
But you got to just, you know, almost be apologetic to people.
Just, you know what, you didn't mean to do that.
You didn't mean to ruin my day, and I'm not going to allow you.
Faith Over Road Rage 00:03:18
That's okay.
You know what?
And just fly above all that mess and stress like an eagle.
Force yourself to smile because it's contagious.
Speaking of smiling, you know, Pastor Catton got another talent.
Yeah, he can inspire us with rap.
If you ask him nicely, of course.
Oh, can you rap?
Okay.
Check it out.
It wasn't the stylish clothes you wear.
It wasn't the way you comb your hair.
Or nothing material, but it was all spiritual.
Blame it on salvation, not your education.
Believe that.
I know that things have been hard on you.
You still look good.
You got God on you.
Let's keep it moving.
Don't quit.
Make sure that God is a part of your daily outfit.
Yale.
All right.
Whoa.
You got your creatures in the ladder option.
Wednesday nights at 10.
I'll be right back.
Pretty good.
Oz.
Our Books Across America campaign is in high gear, as you just saw.
My audience is doing their part by donating books, and I'm excited to add this book, The Science of Parenthood, to the collection.
There it goes.
Drop it in.
It has the perfect combination of science and humor, which is why I believe as a parent, it is needed for all of us.
Dreamy is one of the authors.
Noreen, Dworkin, McDaniel.
Thank you very much.
So what inspired you to write the book?
My son Fletcher is 10 now, but when he was seven, he came home from school talking about Newton's laws of force and motion.
So as he's talking about it over dinner, I thought, oh, that sounds just like him with the video games.
So I jumped up from the table, wrote it down, Newton's first law of parenting.
A child at rest will remain at rest until you need your iPad back.
Yes.
Now these why questions are the ones that intimidate most of us because kids ask us why things work and I mean you all been there, right?
They asked darn this questions.
You have no idea why these things are functioning the way they function.
Machines, physics, or whatever.
Or even like, you know, everyday things like, why do I have to do my homework?
Why do I have to read?
Why do I have to take a shower?
Because I said so.
Yes, exactly.
It doesn't work.
Thank you, Noreen.
So reading shapes our lives at every stage.
Books fuel our brains and our hearts, which is why Daphne started reading to Philo so early.
The love of reading can last a lifetime.
There's no better proof than Miriam and Harold, who were in the news last week, that Miriam's granddaughter set these two book lovers on a blind date in a bookstore.
And now they're dating.
They call each other, get this, old friends.
Beautiful proof that the love of reading can pay off in more ways than one.
Good luck to Miriam and Harold.
Remember, happy and healthy?
It starts at home or in a bookstore.
See you next time.
