Hidden Price Traps Revealed 00:06:07
Secrets retailers don't want you to know.
We're going to reveal the hidden price traps, secret sales, and the right time to shop to get a bargain.
At big box stores, department stores, even at the dollar store.
Here's a great trick.
All the manager's specials end in 97.
So that's your cue that that's a bargain.
See how to beat them all at their own game.
The whole way they're set up gets us to spend more money.
Coming up next, we'll save lives today.
We are ready to get healthy!
Get comfortable.
On today's show, the secrets retailers don't want you to know.
We're going to reveal the hidden price traps, secret sales, and the right time to shop to get a bargain.
We even opened up a store right here in our studio.
And many members of this audience, there you are right there, bought some items.
We're going to find out who got a deal.
And I got to admit this, a couple of you got duped.
We're going to find out who they were too.
Some of you look very worried.
I'm not sure.
None of us know when we go shopping.
Don't worry, we're going to return all the money, at least here in the studio we will.
But in the real world, that's not what happens.
So we're going to start with the secrets of big box stores and then how to outsmart the department stores plus 50 life-changing new ways to use avocados, books.
This is bigger than Pinterest.
You're going to love this so much.
You ready for this?
All right, come on over.
Let's get started with the secrets retailers don't want you to know.
I sent consumer reporter Lisa Lee Freeman to investigate big box stores.
Big box stores, they entice you with the promise of saving big money by buying in bulk and offer huge discounts on big ticket items compared to smaller retailers.
But are you really getting the best deal?
What if I told you that you can get even more bang for your buck?
That's right.
I'm revealing the big box money saving secrets they don't want you to know about.
Big box secret number one, beware of the big shopping cart.
There's a reason why big box stores have big shopping carts.
They want you to buy more.
It's psychological.
So put your coat or another personal item on one side of the cart so you have less room on the other side to fill your cart up with extra items that you don't need.
Big box secret number two, find out the best days to buy markdown items.
Many stores have specific days of the week where employees mark down items or add them to the clearance section.
So use this to your advantage.
Strike up a conversation with a worker or manager and ask when the next markdowns will be.
It'll put more money in your pocket.
Big box secret number three, don't be fooled by decoy deals.
Stores know you're bargain hunting, so they use a trick called decoy deals, where they offer an expensive product and right next to it, a similar product that's lower in price.
So you think you're getting a good deal.
They may even throw in a lower price bargain product so that you're drawn to the mid-priced item.
But this doesn't guarantee that you're getting the best value.
So do your homework and compare prices at other retail stores.
And big box secret number four is the biggest retail secret of all, and it's right in front of your eyes.
Don't leave us at a cliffhanger like that.
You're just about to give us the most important tip.
So I got a toaster here.
Yeah.
Show me what these numbers mean.
Well, you see that 99 cents the end of the price?
That's the price of regularly priced items at Target.
But nine also happens to be a magic number at retail stores.
Studies have shown, many studies have shown, that nines make you buy more stuff.
You're much more likely to buy an item if it ends in nine than any other number.
I knew it, because otherwise you'd round up sort of dumb, right?
I make one penny change.
Yeah, it makes a big difference.
Also, at Target, you'll find that reduced priced items and clearance items often end in a six or an eight.
And here's a great trick.
If you want to find the very best bargains at Target, look for clearance rack items with clearance tags with a tiny little number on the top.
And that number is the percentage discount off the original price.
And of course, the bigger the number, the bigger the discount.
If I just want to have 70, I'd buy it in a second.
Yeah, yeah.
That's not so six.
That's right.
And sometimes you'll actually see one stacked on top of another as they're marking things down.
What about other big box stores besides Target?
Okay, Walmart, a lot of their prices that are reduced are sevens, sixes, fours.
They're kind of all over the board.
But the clearance items, the code for clearance there is round numbers.
Numbers that end in zero, $1, $2, $5.
Those are your clearance items.
And at Costco, all the manager specials end in $97.
So that's your cue that that's a bargain.
All right, come on over here.
So now I understand the pricing now.
The other big box door item you might notice, and this is a secret that she shared with me, is that free samples aren't always free.
Evie is here enjoying, what do you have?
Meatballs over there, Evie?
Meatballs.
Thank you very much.
Now, maybe I thought you were saying about this.
So when you go shopping, are you like my wife?
You always are tasting everything they're offering you.
Yes, absolutely.
Now, here's the big question.
You find yourself buying a lot of the products you're tasting, even though you wouldn't have normally.
Yes, absolutely.
I love the samples, and I definitely, definitely take them home because you're so good.
Is there an element of guilt to your decision, Evie?
Sometimes, sometimes there is.
You feel bad?
You feel obligated.
You feel obligated to buy the sample.
Yeah.
You know, you're talking to the nice lady and she's telling you about the product and you're tasting it and having love.
Store Layout Tricks Explained 00:10:06
Lisa says, I see, see what she's doing.
Exactly.
Now she's pushing food on you.
Yeah.
Food pusher.
Yeah.
But Lisa says this is actually done on purpose.
Obviously, these folks aren't just doing this as charity work.
They actually use it to their advantage.
How so?
It's a psychological trick.
It's called the rule of reciprocity.
And it means that when somebody gives you something for free, you want to reciprocate.
And so you end up buying the item.
But here's another thing that's interesting: other research shows that when you get a free goodie, you want to buy more goodies and not just the goodie that they gave you.
And here's another thing research has uncovered.
When you see food out of the box, when you are able to touch it and taste it, you're much more likely to buy it than if you just see a picture of the food.
Put the meatball down, please, Evie.
You have enough shopping.
Thank you.
Thank you, Evie.
All right.
Now, the other thing you might notice, all right, you're gonna come with us, Evie.
You can join us if you want.
You're so busy eating meatballs over there.
She's very distracted, but this is the whole point of all this, is to distract you and get you to stop in a store.
And so samples, sales signs, flooring is even designed to trick you.
The flooring?
That's right.
As you'll see when you walk through a department store, in many cases, they're going to have smooth floors and then they're going to have floors that are carpeted.
Now, carpeting, especially deep pile carpeting, you're going to find in upscale areas where you have like the designer clothes.
And that's to get you to give you a feeling of indulgence.
So you feel like you're going to spend.
And it slows you down.
And it slows you down.
Like the food did.
That's exactly right.
And here's another trick.
As you walk through the store, men's departments often have floors that are dark wood.
I feel more manly already.
It gives men...
Testosterone surging through my veins.
It gets men in the mood to spend.
And women's floors are often light-colored wood.
Are you serious?
Yes.
They've even thought about the coloring of the floor.
That's right.
There's tricks all around you.
Department stores and all kinds of retailers, they're manipulating you in so many ways on this subconscious level.
You have no idea.
So money problems, as you all know, cause stress.
It's the number one cause of stress.
That's why I care about this topic because I don't want that stress to lead to health issues because it's the number one cause of health issues.
So I have a stake in making sure you guys save money, but I also hate when you're getting ripped off.
So obviously, I mean, it's interesting to know about the floors, and I do appreciate the tips about getting slowed down, but I can't obsess about the color of the floor.
How do we get the system back?
How do we get what's ours out of it?
Well, I think you just have to be aware that you're being manipulated at every turn in the store.
And use the part of your brain called the prefrontal cortex, which is your decision-making area of your brain, which can override those animal instincts that they're appealing to so that you can make rational decisions while you're in the store.
And one way to help that along is to make lists.
A lot of people do this already.
I like to make lists on smartphones because then you always have your list with you and it keeps you calm, focused, and not distracted.
And when you're distracted, you're less likely to be price sensitive and you're more likely to overspend.
Just between us, big box stores, are they our friends or our enemy?
I would say they're kind of like a friend of me.
A friend of me.
Well, no.
Actually, they really want to give you a feeling that you got good value when you go into these stores.
So take advantage of their generosity.
Use their coupons.
Use their apps.
Join their loyalty programs, but also realize that these are marketing gimmicks to get you to spend more money.
So if you could use those techniques to save money without buying a lot more than you need, you're ahead of the game.
All right, when we come back, the secrets department stores don't want you to know, they can save you some big bucks.
Stick around.
Next, we opened up a mock store right here in our studio so you can see how department stores are designed to make you spend more money.
We'll show you how to avoid their tricks to tempt you with new items and expensive trends.
Retailer secrets exposed.
That's next.
It's a battle of the burgers.
Is turkey healthier than beef?
Are these secretly packed with carbs and sugar and all kinds of chemicals?
And Camilla Elvis reveals her healthy cooking secrets.
So we're going to push her to work.
Let's do it.
All nuance.
That's coming up tomorrow.
I'm back with Lisa Lee Freeman, our own consumer expert.
And now we're going to reveal department store secrets they don't want you to know.
Now earlier we turned part of our studio into a fake store.
There you all go shopping in there.
It's a social experiment we were doing to see who would fall for the biggest department store scams of all time.
Take a look.
Find yourselves in there.
And I may turn the attention to one member of our audience, Guy.
Yes.
Is that your name?
Yes, I'm Guy Boss from Connecticut.
So I'm not interrogating you guy.
All right, here's the deal.
I'll give the money back.
But I do want to know what you purchased and why'd you do it?
I purchased a book and I purchased a bag and I couldn't pass up the two-for-one deal at the doctor's store and I got myself a free t-shirt from my husband.
All right, so you have two for one, some extra little things added in there.
Yes.
All right.
Did Guy make a wise purchase?
Well, this is a classic retailer trick called BOGO.
Buy one, get one free.
Buy two, get one free.
But as we all know, freebies aren't really free.
They get you to buy stuff you probably don't need or to get you to buy more stuff than you need.
Well, I think it's a bargain if it's at the Doctor's store.
Ah, of course.
Yeah, you know what?
Just for that, here.
Here's the money back.
Keep the books.
But I just thank you for buying the books, but I want you making wise decisions.
I fall for that two-for-one trap all the time, and it sort of makes sense.
These big department stores do lots of things.
Listen, they spend a lot of time and money to figure out how to make sure we spend our money with them.
That's not a bad thing.
That's the game.
But you guys, we all need to know how to play.
So give us another example of what they do.
Sort of get us to spend a little extra.
Well, the whole way they're set up gets us to spend more money.
They're like Vegas casinos in there.
There's no clocks on the walls.
There's no windows.
In order to find the bathroom, you have to go on this big adventure.
They keep you in the store so you keep spending.
It's crazy.
So how many of you, let me ask the audience, how many of you turn right when you walk into the store?
Right?
Most of us are right-handed.
So we tend to turn right.
Hold on, I may come back to you.
All right, let's go over a second.
Let's explain about this right-hand turn because it's an example.
It's emblematic.
I want you to realize things you've been doing your whole life while you were shopping and never even realized it.
So, as an example, if we can play this, you walk in there, you turn right, you go to women's clothes.
What's the big deal?
All these folks turn right, same as me.
Why does the store care?
Well, they know you turn right the minute you walk in the store, so that's where they put all the expensive, trendy new items that they want you to buy.
These are not the bargains, this is the stuff they want to turn your attention to.
The full-price merch.
And why are they always attracting us to the eateries?
I've noticed they placed a lot of cafes or bakers, different things in stores these days.
Well, this is part of the Vegas trick.
If they have lots of eateries or someplace for you to hang out in the store, like a little cafe or coffee shop, you're gonna stay in the store longer.
They keep you there.
Also, the smell of the food primes the pump and gets you to spend.
And here's one trick that every shopper should know: never shop hungry or drunk for that matter.
It will kill your willpower, and it will completely be price sensitive if you're in that mode.
You're just trying to get food or buying stuff.
And, you know, this is not a good way to shop.
Are you guys writing this down?
Never drunk, never hungry when you shop.
All right, we booked your little department store over here.
It's our version of where the expensive items in the store might be when you turn right, for example.
So, what's the trick here that they're playing on our subconscious to get us to buy things?
Yeah, well, in addition to keeping you in the store, department stores and all retail stores are very good at getting your eye to go to a particular place that they want you to go.
And in this case, they want you to go to the most expensive handbag in the store.
So, they set up a display where it's like a triangle and it draws your eye up to this beautiful bag that they want you to buy.
They may have lots of music and bright lights, also.
So, it's kind of like a stage, you know, and you get very excited and you look at that bag and maybe you even buy it.
We like symmetry, right?
We want to sort of head in that middle place.
That's why they even package things in gambos.
Okay.
Now, unlike the pretty inexpensive part of the store, there's the clearance section.
Yes.
Which I'm always horrified by because it looks literally like, yeah, I know y'all like clearance section.
Is this what it looks like, right?
It clothes all over the place.
Yeah.
Why?
It's crazy.
The rest of the store could look pristine and perfectly manicured.
You get to the clearance rack, and it's actually a deterrent.
It looks like a mess back there.
But once you get there, what do you do?
You dive in.
Your bargain hunting instincts just kick right in.
And if you actually find something that you think is a really good bargain, you're going to buy it.
You're not going to walk away from it.
You scored.
You want to go home with that goodie.
So, you know, you have to be aware that this is actually a mess for a reason.
So, how do we navigate a store best?
What should we do?
You're telling us to break the rhythm that has been ingrained in us.
Yeah.
Where do we start shopping?
Where do we end shopping?
What do you do?
Well, what I do is I go straight to the back of the store.
Stores hate people like me.
Right to the bargain.
Well, I'm sure a lot of people do this.
You go right to the bargain rack.
But just keep in mind that, you know, stick to your list.
Think about what you really need.
If you find it at the bargain rack, great.
If you don't find it at the bargain rack, then make your way to the rest of the store to the more expensive items.
Navigating Dollar Store Chaos 00:05:42
And how can they really give you 80% off?
I mean, I see those signs.
It's like baked, it's like chumming the water for our family.
Oh, yeah.
It creates a huge emotional response when you see 80% off.
You go nuts, basically.
And the truth of the matter is, is most stores are not, you know, 80% off is probably not the real discount.
This is well documented.
A lot of stores now are marking up original prices or list prices or just making them up.
And what happens is that makes it look like it's a bigger markdown than it really is.
So your best defense is to download an app like Shop Savvy or go to google.com on your phone and look and see what that particular item is going for.
Forget about the percentage markdown.
Just look at the price and see whether it's a really good deal by checking prices on your smartphone.
All right, what's left out there are the dollar stores.
We come back, we're headed to the dollar store to find out what really is a good deal.
Is it really there?
We'll find out.
Coming up next, are dollar stores really saving you any money?
Please leave me.
Reveals if these shoppers made a good buy or not.
These could be a choking hazard.
You just might be paying more than you think.
Find out if what you're buying is a dollar deal or no deal.
Coming up next.
Back with Consumer Reporter, Lisa Lee Friedman, who has been revealing the secrets retailers do not want you to know.
Now we're moving on to the dollar store.
We have some audience members here who have bought items purchased at dollar stores.
And this is going to reveal if it was a good buy or not.
What theme of the game we're playing?
Dollar deal or no deal.
As smart as our audience is, let's see how they've done at the box store.
We're going to start over here with Courtney.
How are you?
Hi, Dr. Oz.
So let's find out what you buy from the dollar store.
Well, I love shopping at the dollar store because I get little knickknacks for my two-year-old granddaughter.
And so I actually just bought these glow-in-the-dark stars to put all over her room.
So she's asleep underneath the stars.
I'm so excited for it.
Well, I've got a little granddaughter, same age.
You do?
How convenient.
They're a little Philomena.
So cute.
Lisa, what's the verdict?
Dollar deal or no deal?
No deal.
Oh, man.
The problem with some of these toys is they don't have warnings on them.
For young kids, these could be a choking hazard.
And they don't say what age groups are appropriate.
And they don't say choking hazard, but these could be a choking hazard.
And the way to tell is to use the toilet paper tube deal.
Which I kept on my mic this week.
Oh, good.
All right.
So you have some stars available here.
So look at this store.
This goes, oops, wait a minute.
This goes right through.
Which means it could get lodged in your child's throat.
Hold a second.
And that goes for toys as well.
I've seen toys and other things at dollar stores that don't have warnings for children.
They're really required on games and things like that.
But I think they should be on these toys as well in case it comes off the wall.
These big boys would be okay.
Okay.
I'll speak with you, okay?
Okay, I will.
I'm taking the moon.
You take the moon.
I'll take the stars.
Okay, thank you.
All right, move on to our next contestant.
We got our victims.
What's your name?
I'm Faye, Dr. Oz, but my real name is the Dollar Store Queen.
Oh, yeah.
Look at the Dollar Store Queen.
I like that thing.
Yes.
So, what's your dollar store acquisition?
All right, Dr. Oz.
Well, like I said, I love the dollar store.
I buy everything at the dollar store, but one thing I love is this shaving cream.
I mean, it's a great price and it's a great brand.
I'm a single mom of four, so Dr. Oz, I got to keep these legs summertime fine.
Yeah, so if you know any doctors, send them my way.
All right, so the verdict, dollar deal or no deal for the Debra here?
No deal.
No deal.
In this case, size matters.
And hold up those two cans.
The one on the right is a 10-ounce can from a regular mainstream retailer, and the one on the left is the dollar store can, and that's six ounces.
And ounce for ounce, it's actually cheaper to buy it at a mainstream store.
It's very important to do the math and calculate, look at the total price, and divide it by the number of ounces.
And you'll see, in this case, it's cheaper to buy at the store.
So you'll see at a lot of dollar stores, the products are a little bit smaller.
So do the math.
Make sure you're getting a good deal.
Okay.
With your personality, you don't need those legs to be shaved anyway.
Thank you.
All right.
Finally, we got Eileen here.
Now, Eileen, you go shopping at dollar stores.
You bought something back for us.
I do.
Yes, I love to go to the dollar store for party supplies.
So it's really, you get a great deal.
I have these birthday cards here.
I know a lot of people send like online messages and things like that these days, but there's nothing like the personal touch of a card, right?
So you get a really great deal at the dollar store.
And this pack of 15 balloons, only for a little bit over a dollar for the entire pack.
So you can't beat it.
Well, it is a cheap peeling.
I like the idea of having stuff in your hands like these cards that make a difference.
So these are the verdict.
Dollar deal or no deal?
Double dollar deal on this double.
I got it.
You could pay up to 12 times more per card at a regular retail store.
Also, the balloons, we found them for three times the price at a regular retail store.
So paper goods, party goods, foods and supplies, great deal at the dollar store.
Beaufort.
I know so.
I was going to try to blow them.
I can't open the packaging.
There you go.
I'll help you out.
All right, here, you both.
All right, guys.
Let's all get one.
This is so inexpensive.
We're going to do it.
We'll be right back.
Stick around.
Creative Avocado Uses Shared 00:13:37
Next, we switch things up with a fruit that has completely outgrown its guacamole roots.
The amazing avocado, packed with incredible health benefits.
I love them so much.
I'm going to show you 50 life-changing new ways to use them.
Coming up next.
It's a battle of the burgers.
Is turkey healthier than beef?
Are these secretly packed with carbs and sugar and all kinds of chemicals?
Our food truth burger battle heats up.
All new eyes.
that's coming up tomorrow if you love avocados you are not alone it's It is the single most pinned ingredient on Pinterest.
Now, a brewery in LA is now making beer with it.
There are people even going as far as getting avocado tattoos like Molly Cyrus.
That's actually her avocado tattoo.
Look at that.
She posted on Instagram recently.
Now, these fruits have clearly outgrown their guacamole roots.
I love them so much because they got great health benefits.
So today, our biggest list ever: 50 ways, they're life-changing ways to use avocados.
The first new way to use avocados is to cut your carbs with them.
And let's be honest here: the top four crave carbs are pasta, french fries, mashed potatoes, and bread.
Did I miss any?
No.
No, I got them all.
So, in order for this to work, we got to figure out how to put avocado in place to help these carbs and get them reduced a little bit to get back on a fast track to being healthy.
And Harry, Roberta's joining us.
She's one of our biggest avocado fans.
Carb trick for every one of those carbs.
Absolutely.
Before we get that, any avocado tattoos?
Any plans to get tattoos?
No, I don't think my husband would like that too much, but I would love to own an avocado tree.
I actually have one.
Do you?
Yes.
Does it grow up here good?
No, it doesn't grow well.
You've got to take it indoors in the winter.
Okay.
So it takes up the entire kitchen in the winter, but it's worth having around.
I would love that.
I would love that.
So I have four recipes here for you.
All right, let's start with pasta.
Everyone loves pasta, but it's hard sometimes to get possible without calories.
So fettuccine Alfredo, a good one.
We checked it out.
It's got 92 grams of carbs.
So how do you use avocado to cut down those carbs?
So basically, you're going to take non-fat milk, you're going to take two ripe avocados, you're going to blend it, you're going to simmer it down, you're going to add some garlic powder, salt and pepper, and you're going to put it with your favorite pasta.
Isn't that delicious?
And then optionally, you can top it with the Parmesan cheese, of course.
Not only does it taste better than usual Alfredo Petta Fettuccino because it's a little bit lighter.
It takes you from 92 carbs, watch this all the way down to 35 carbs.
That's crazy.
All right.
So we started with a high success switch out.
How about French fries?
This is a little different.
These are my absolute favorite.
My kids are obsessed with these.
You guys have to go home and try this tonight, especially when they come out of the oven.
They're baked.
They're with panko crumbs, whole wheat panko crumbs.
You just slice them, you put them in the oven.
They are to die for, seriously.
You're right.
Right?
And not only that, the avocado takes the French fries from 67 grams of carbs down to 40.
So good.
Pass that around.
I don't want you guys being jealous of us.
Just go spill it in the studio floor.
I get in trouble.
All right.
Next up, mashed potatoes.
Now, mashed potatoes, of course, you know, all the butter and cream that we use to make it smooth and creamy, but avocado gives you that buttery deliciousness, right?
And the kids actually love the color.
They think it's cool.
My son says it's like Hulk mashed potatoes.
Hulk mashed potatoes?
Yeah, because they're cream, yeah.
So I really wish people could taste these at home.
This is a good example.
This is actually better than mashed potatoes.
It's a little more exotic.
And the avocado saves mashed potatoes, eight grams of carbs.
Worth it.
Okay.
And finally, so my dad is a baker, and I grew up eating bread.
We love bread in our house.
We actually, you know, like you have banana bread, carrot bread, zucchini bread.
Why let those guys have fun?
Let the avocado have fun, right?
And you can actually turn this into a pizza crust too.
So make some pizza for pineapple on top.
Yeah, exactly.
Fantastic.
And the avocado takes a serving of bread from 18 grams of carbs down to just 13, which makes it a home run.
Thank you so much.
All right, so check out our list, the big list of 50 life-changing new ways to use avocados to find these complete recipes.
I love Roberta and all the things you guys are doing.
So the next new way to use avocados is to find a way of using them as a replacement for butter and oil when you bake.
Now here's the deal: you can use a one-to-one ratio.
So if your recipe calls for a quarter cup of oil, try a quarter cup of avocado instead.
It's a way to sneak in those good fats for your family.
So we, as an example, just for you guys, have made up recipes, and these are what they look like.
We have an avocado mousse, which is to die for.
I love key lime, and you can make key lime pie with avocado.
It makes sense.
It's got the right texture.
You can make cupcakes with avocado.
The brownies, you'll never give them back.
We make them with avocado.
All these desserts, all of them, are part of our big list of 50 new life-changing ways to use avocado.
They're all on Dr.Oz.com, but we're not done yet.
When we come back, the woman who Gordon Ramsey named MasterChef is showing us how to use avocado at your next barbecue.
And she can make us an avocado daiquiri.
The list continues.
Hi, Dr. Raj.
I'm Jevita from the Healthy Maven, and I love avocados.
Here are some of my favorite ways to use avocados.
Ditch the gunk in your everyday shaving cream and use avocado instead.
Just add a full avocado to a blender and blend until smooth.
Then slather it on your legs before shaving.
I also love adding avocado to my hair masts.
Just add half an avocado and a banana and mash together.
And then starting at your roots, mix into your hair.
Let it sit for about 20 minutes before washing it out.
And last but not least, I love making avocado face masks.
All you have to do is mix half of an avocado with some oats and honey and put it on your face for about 20 minutes.
Tastes good.
Next, avocados on your grill?
Chef Claudia says yes.
She's got more creative ways to use this versatile fruit.
From cocktails to dessert.
See what avocados can do at any meal.
It feels like I'm not cheating on my diet.
Exactly.
Coming up next.
Whoever said a doctor's visit isn't fun has obviously never been to the Dr. Oz show.
Is that right?
Make your appointment.
Okay, go to doctorOz.com slash tickets and sign up for free tickets.
I don't know if you've heard, but avocado toast is all the range.
It really makes the best quick and easy lunch or dinner.
Just mash up some avocado on some whole grain toast and top it with whatever toppings you like.
I love those steps.
Okay, we've been giving you 50 life-changing new ways to use avocados now.
The avocado is taking over your next barbecue.
Please welcome the woman that Gordon Ramsey named Master Chef Claudia Sandoval, who specializes in next skin cuisine.
So where did this passion come from?
Oh my goodness.
I mean, I grew up around avocados.
I mean, we have a ranch where we have avocado trees.
And every summer, I would go down to Masutlan where my family's from, and we would just always have avocados because we have groves of avocados in Masutlan.
And it was just, you know, it just becomes a passion when you have it in your food all the time.
I think it's, I mean, I don't think any ingredient is more Mexican than avocados, right?
It's the best.
You can eat the inventory.
All right.
Come on back here.
Now, I've never heard of barbecuing avocados, grilling them, or frankly, using them in this setting, but I trust you.
Yes.
This is in your blood.
Yes.
So teach us the best way to do it, especially a beautiful summer day.
So avocados, one of the best ways to make them, of course, is grilled.
And so one of the things that I did learn in the Master Chef kitchen was to, instead of doing this and risking an injury to your hand, put it down on the actual cutting board and then hit the pith, take that out.
That's very safe of you.
Yes, because you don't want to get injured.
You've got to keep it safe.
So then what you do is you squeeze a little bit of lime juice on there.
You grab a little bit of olive oil and then brush it on there as well.
And then you take it right straight to the right straight to the grill.
That's it?
That's it.
So you put it down for about, you know, maybe at one and a half minutes, flip them, and then look at that.
Oh, my goodness.
So then you can fill these with practically anything.
If you're vegetarian, you could do a three-bean salad in there.
You could grill up some shrimp.
I love this.
I mean, carniasado, whatever.
Why has no one told us this before?
Why are you keeping this a secret for us?
It's not fair.
Because you need it in your life.
All right.
The next new way to use avocados is to make an avoid cocktail.
I never thought you can get a buzz from avocados.
Well, you've got a way of doing it.
Yes, you've got two ounces here, one ounce of light rum, one ounce of dark rum.
You've got a little bit of avocado, of course.
You've got some delicious, delicious heavy cream in there just to kind of make it extra creamy.
And then, I mean, come on, garnish with a little bit of lime zest.
What more would you like?
Creamy is the word.
Oh, yeah.
But you could probably make it without the heavy cream.
Oh, 100%.
I like this a lot.
This is going to be very popular this summer.
You know, avocados are creamy on their own, so you could exclude it.
And I actually have a really, really great way to sneak in a little bit more creaminess and not use the heavy cream.
What's that?
Well, what comes after all of this amazing food?
Dessert.
Dessert.
Yes.
Oh, yes.
Let's get the dessert.
You can't end the barbecue without ice cream, but here's the question.
Can you turn avocados into ice cream?
Oh, 100%.
And this recipe is actually an incredibly easy one.
It's four ingredients: avocados, coconut milk, honey, and a little bit of lemon juice.
And I mean.
Oh, my goodness.
Yeah, and so it's a perfect way to actually sneak in, you know, all of those good fats that come in avocados, but without actually having to include all of that dairy.
You know what?
I could judge this, and people would probably think I'm being honest, but you never know.
But today I did something different.
I helped taste that.
I brought members of our esteemed avocado fan club here.
Their palates are so refined and attuned to the avocado that I wanted to see if it's avocado honey ice cream with past mustard.
If you pass this, I'll get some of those avocados over there.
Now, by the way, you're all in green, not an accent, I assume.
Definitely not.
Do you like our avocado jewelry?
Oh, yes.
Yes.
Avocado tattoos anywhere?
No.
No, not yet.
You're just working away.
Wait, first, can we call you Dr. Azacalvo?
I love it.
It's like green eyes.
Just for today.
I love it.
So beautiful.
What do you guys think about this?
I want some honest responses because you guys are members of the avocado fan camp.
It's more than I thought.
It's really creamy.
It's really good.
It's really creamy.
It's really good.
And you would never be able to tell that there's no dairy in that.
It's really great.
Really, really, really good.
There is no dairy in that.
It's just coconut milk, avocados, a little bit of honey, and some lemon juice.
It feels like I'm not cheating on my diet.
Exactly.
Then you're not.
So would you make it for your families?
Yes, yes.
Yes, yes.
I definitely do.
I have five boys and they would love this.
They would love it.
It's really good.
All right.
Now, that cockdo, I'm going to go back and get that for you.
Play amongst yourselves.
Okay.
I actually want to show you this.
This would be the perfect meal to me.
You have those avocado ice creams.
You have these daccuries.
I didn't pound them with too much stuff in there.
You can make it any way you wish, but I want you to experiment with these many ways of giving you avocados that we're playing with today.
I think if you do it all the right way, you'll be green on the inside and on the outside.
You like them?
Yes.
Everything we do for you guys.
Delicious.
All right.
And your favorite ways of using avocados, real quick.
One by one.
I'm just telling you.
Avocado with a little bit of lemon juice is great for my skin.
I've noticed that.
It lightens the skin and it's so amazing.
So that's my trick with avocados.
I usually like to use it as an alternative for mayo.
I put it on a tuna salad, chicken salad, pasta salad, and it's great.
It's nutritious and it's a healthy alternative and it tastes great.
I love it with eggs and on toast for breakfast since I had weight loss surgery.
So was there certain things that I could eat and I love avocados.
I like them for breakfast as well.
People don't expect it then.
It's probably safer to say what don't I eat with avocados, but get the banana bread pudding.
I want avocado pudding.
Yeah, it's better, I think.
Really good.
Yeah, it has more creaminess, but with the right amount of sweetness.
And finally.
I love wine, so if I could, I would have avocado wine.
Avocado wine?
Does it exist?
I also thought it doesn't, I don't think.
Thank you very much.
Thank you for having me.
The all-new season of Master Chef premieres June 1st on Fox and Claudia's new book.
Now is it Claudia's cochina?
No, no, no, don't say that.
What?
Cochina means dirty.
Cochina.
Claudios Cochina.
I'm glad I didn't say cochina because the subtitle, The Taste of Mexico, is available now.
You can also find the full list of 50 life-changing new ways to use avocado at drive.com.
We'll be right back.
Did you know that you need fat in order to absorb the goodness from vegetables?
So next time you're making a salad, top it with an avocado dressing.
Add it to your morning smoothie.
It's a great way to add nutrients to your breakfast and has a lot of staying power, so you won't be hungry before lunch.
And of course, we can't forget guacamole.
Guacamole is really the best way to eat avocados.
It's so good, and you can top it on anything.

Next.
It's a battle of the burgers.
Is turkey healthier than beef?
Are these secretly packed with carbs and sugar and all kinds of chemicals?
Our food truth burger battle heats up all new eyes.
That's coming up tomorrow.
We just gave you our big avocado list and now we're giving you 13 incredible ways to use aspirin.
If you're already using it to get rid of your pain, reduce your risk of heart disease, good for you.
But these little pills, they can do even more.
From helping you with the laundry to saving you money, they could help you out more than your husband.
It's hard to do, right?
Really can be a BI.
So let's get started.
Our first incredible way to use aspirin is to extend the life of your flowers.
Lily is here.
How are you, Lily?
And Bifface.
And you're a florist.
I sure am.
So you know a lot about this.
How'd you figure out that it might help?
Well, my great grandma, who turned 99 last week, taught me this trick.
Yeah.
She's been using it for years.
Years and years, 99 years.
And you're going to show us a trick?
Absolutely.
All right, so we got lilies for you, Lily.
Of course.
Of course.
It's at least I could do.
The name was Daisy.
We would have been more difficult, but go ahead.
So you're going to bring your flowers home from the market and you're going to give them a fresh cut about one to two inches.
Let me show you the trick.
There you go.
Let me show you the trick.
Give them a fresh cut, one to two inches.
All right.
On a sharp angle.
You're going to take one crushed aspirin, dump it into room temperature water, then you're going to put your flowers right in there.
And you're going to be amazed at how much longer they're going to last.
Now, do you know why they work?
The aspirins?
I don't.
It's just the trick of the trade.
You can show up at your cocktail party or next time you have a flower convention, go in there and say, I know why it works.
It acidifies the water, the aspirin, right?
Salicylic acid, and keeps the water clean of all those flower-damaging bacteria, which is the reason that it works so effectively.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
All right, next up, Christine Florio is the creator of the blog Girl Hacks.
And she's here with our next aspirin hacks.
You've got to see the belief.
The next one that guys have problems with is the sweat stains we always have under our t-shirts.
Yes.
I think women get sweat stains too, and that's not quite as large.
Not quite as large.
This is something that you see all the time.
Guys will maybe buy a shirt and you'll wear it like three times and then all of a sudden you start getting these ugly yellow stains on them.
So you're either throwing things out and wasting money or you're doing laundry every day, which neither of those is fun.
So what you have to do is take three crushed aspirin, just add them to half a cup of warm water, kind of mix it up with a spoon.
You mix very gently.
Thank you.
Must be from cooking.
Must be from cookie.
I would just wash it up like that.
Okay, and then you just take the spot where you're stained, dip it in the warm water, just kind of leave it there, make sure it gets saturated, make sure the aspirin's really getting in there, and then leave it there for about an hour, and then just go back, do your laundry, do food shopping, go to the gym, whatever you have to do, come back an hour later, and just wash it like you normally would.
That's it, it comes out?
That's it.
Now, this is, I'm told, is an after version.
Yes, after.
I mean, if I compare these, it's hard to.
So why do you think that works?
Most detergents won't take that out to go back to normal.
There's something called salicylic acid in aspirin.
Say that five times fast.
And it kind of neutralizes stains by attacking the compounds of sweat and then just breaking them down and removing them.
I love it.
All right, come on over.
We've got one other one that's going to be helpful to us.
Razor birds in the summer are common.
This is a great hack, especially now that summer is coming and the warm months are coming.
You shave, your skin gets a bit more.
That's a razor bird that one of our viewers sent in, by the way.
I mean, that's unfortunate.
Yeah, and it can make you self-conscious.
And women get it, men get it.
But all you have to do is use this hack.
It's a paste that you make by crushing up one aspirin, just adding it with a little tiny bit of water, making almost like a sticky paste that you can then put on your skin where the razor bumps are.
You want that consistency sort of.
So it should stay on your fingers.
Thick enough that it will stay on the actual bumps.
Yeah, you don't want it to run off.
And you put it on before you shave or right after you shave?
You should put it on right after you shave because that's usually when your skin gets irritated.
So while it's still red, you want to put the aspirin and the water on the razor bumps, leave it on until it's dry, and then just rinse it off with lukewarm water.
Now, if you know why this works to show off, since you knew why the stain came out from salicylic acid, it actually takes the bacteria because razor bumps really are just bacteria and irritation of the skin.
So it kind of just soaks into that bacteria and pulls it out of your skin and leaves you completely smooth.
I'll give you one more reason.
Okay.
Both you and Lily can show off.
You tell me.
It's interesting.
It's an exfoliant.
Yes.
So you clear up.
A lot of those rashes happen because your skin tries to heal itself on top of what you damaged.
So when you exfoliate it a little bit, it actually not just kills the bacteria, but removes the ability of the hair focals to be suffocated.
Yes.
I like this.
That's wonderful advice.
Hex for life.
Hex for life.
All right.
I'm going to put the full list of 13 incredible ways to use aspirin at Dr. Rogers.com.
