Time Text
Today on Dr. Oz, Juliana Rancic.
How you doing though?
Sets the record straight on the eating disorder rumors, the stress and scrutiny of her health, her marriage, her job, and her heartbreaking baby news.
Plus, what's for dinner?
Healthy one-pot wonders that are cheap.
That's my kind of meal.
And will feed the whole family.
I'm putting my bib on now.
Coming up next on Dr. Oz.
Julianna Rancic is no stranger to the limelight.
She's reporting on and interviewing celebrities for a living as the anchor of E! News.
But today, the tables are turned as she opens up about eating disorder rumors, the death of her fashion police friend, Joan Rivers, and news about trying for another baby.
Please welcome my friend, Juliana Rancic.
Thank you very much.
So nice to see you.
Always good to see you.
Thank you.
Where do you want me?
Well, let's go over there.
I learned years ago to sit on this side from Oprah.
Oh, yeah?
It's a pure habit.
There's no reason for it.
Really?
Is that your good side?
No, I don't have a good side.
You have two good sides.
I don't know if that's true either.
But she would always sit here, so I learned that habit.
Oh, that's funny.
Great book, Going Off Script.
Thank you.
Juliana's new book.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I must say, you're very open in this book.
You're open in everything you do.
And a lot of times, folks talk about you.
And sometimes, you know, making very specific comments about your health is an example.
Yes.
How do you cope with all that stress?
It's not easy and it's become harder.
You know, I would think it would become easier the longer I'm in this business.
But I feel like lately it's become a lot harder to deal with all the scrutiny about my weight and just different kind of rumors that are floating around.
But what I think to myself is, you know what, as long as I know the truth and my husband knows the truth and my family knows the truth, that's really all that matters.
But I would be lying if I said it didn't bother me.
So you brought up weight.
Let me just start there.
There's some pictures that a lot of folks have seen.
These are from the Golden Globe Awards this past January.
And I must say, just looking at these images, you look really thin, like maybe even dangerously thin.
This one image from the back, if I can show the audience, really caught a lot of people's attention.
Do you think you're too thin?
Well, let's talk about that.
Okay, so I didn't know we were going to show the back shot.
That is a little bit of a different story.
I had scoliosis.
I had severe scoliosis, which is a curvature of the spine.
So my shoulder blades have protruded my entire life.
But people saw that image and thought, she's so skinny, that's why they're protruding.
But that's just an effect of the scoliosis, okay?
Everything else, though.
Yeah, I mean, I've definitely gotten a lot thinner, and it was something that was actually quite scary for me.
You know, I think a lot of women lose weight, and they go, yay!
But for me, about a year ago, I noticed that I was eating more, but losing weight.
Rapidly.
And I was scared.
I called my doctor and I said, is the cancer back?
And he said, come in, let's do tests.
And I was so scared, in fact, that I had Bill take the call for the results because I was so sure they were going to be bad news.
And Bill took the call.
Thank God they were good news.
I actually dropped to the ground and prayed.
I literally, I fainted.
I dropped to my knees and just said, Phil, one moment before I talked to the doctor, thank you, God.
Thank you, God.
Thank God.
And the doctor said to me, you know what I think it is, Juliana?
I think it's the medication you're on.
A lot of women...
Have weight loss on tamoxifen.
So there's nothing bad going on.
It's from the medicine.
So tamoxifen for sure can cause weight loss.
Yes.
I see daily pieces about, you know, folks are saying you have an eating disorder.
So I'm just going to ask it.
Is there any possibility you have an eating disorder?
Absolutely not.
I not only don't have an eating disorder, I've never even come close to having an eating disorder.
I have always been a very healthy eater.
I eat robust meals, you know, Bill jokes that I eat sometimes more than he does, and a lot of times more than he does.
I've always had a fast metabolism, so I'm not just going to say, you know, oh, I'm...
I'm thin just because of the medication.
I've always been on the thinner side.
It's just this past year, I think people have noticed more than ever because I lost more weight.
And trust me, I don't want to lose weight.
I don't think it looks attractive.
I think I used to be more attractive, but now it's killing me to look in the mirror and see that I've just lost all...
I'm just not the girl I used to be.
Let me shift gears if I can.
You've also been very open about your struggles with infertility.
Right.
Wonderful family.
Duke, he's two and a half, right?
Yes, two and a half, yeah.
Two and a half year old.
And Bill, you've spoken openly about your desire to have more children.
Duke was through a surrogate.
Yes.
I understand you have some updates.
Yes.
Yes, so we had one final embryo that was left through IVF. I can't get pregnant myself because of the cancer, and I'm estrogen positive, so the estrogen will fuel the cancer.
So we went ahead and moved forward with our surrogate, and unfortunately, We miscarried this past New Year's Eve, which was tough because it was, in our opinion, our last shot at a biological child.
Now, we've always been open to adoption since before we realized we had fertility issues.
We've always loved the idea of a big family with both, you know, biological children and adopted children.
And so we've always been open to that.
But, you know, it was hard to hear that news, obviously, that we miscarried.
And so we needed some time off and now a few months have passed and we're kind of, you know, regrouping Bill and I. And I just spoke to my doctor the other day and I said, well, obviously I can't get pregnant because I'm on tamoxifen for 10 years.
I'm in year three of 10 years on tamoxifen.
And I said, is there anything I can do?
And he said, you know, now he said there are women who have been able to do IVF while on tamoxifen.
Now they don't go on to get pregnant.
They do IVF They get the embryos and they use a surrogate.
And so that's something that we didn't ever realize that was an option.
And I said, is that safe?
And he said, so far the studies show that is safe.
And if not, you know, we're already talking about adoption as well.
So you might go through the process.
I know the embryos were harvested before you went through the therapy for the breast cancer.
Yes.
So you could actually, yeah, you're thinking of doing it again.
Yeah, I mean, you know, I think if we find out it is indeed completely safe, and, but that's, I mean, that's, I have one of the greatest IVF doctors in really the world.
He probably has the highest success rates.
He's unbelievable.
And he said, look, I've done the research.
I've talked to my colleagues.
And we see a lot of women who will stay on the medication just to do the IVF. And it doesn't affect the embryo.
Where it could affect, where it could have issues is if you actually get pregnant, then it's in your bloodstream, you know, and then it could affect the baby.
But he said, so far we don't see anything wrong with the embryos while women are on tamoxifen.
So that's very interesting.
But like, you know, Dr. Oz, I need it in writing.
I need to know for sure that there's no issues because, you know, I just want to make sure that everything we do is safe.
Yeah.
With regard to the cancer, you seem to be doing pretty well.
Yeah, I'm doing great.
Doing great.
As you mentioned, it's the biggest news out there.
You had a double mastectomy.
I had a double mastectomy, yeah.
So in theory, there's no tissue left there anyway.
Correct.
It could have obviously spread potentially, but the tamoxifen will help with that.
This is all good news.
It is all good news.
And yeah, I had a more aggressive form of cancer, something called HER2 positive, which is not that the cancer was large, but it's aggressive.
And so I had to, you know, I did the double mastectomy.
And so far, so good.
I get blood work every four months and everything's great.
Did you decide to take the chemotherapy?
You know, I had a doctor in the beginning who told me I needed chemo, and then I went and got a second and third opinion.
I talk a lot about that in the book, actually.
You know, I talk about the decision whether or not to do chemo and how I really did my own research.
You know, I think so many of us, the first opinion we get from a doctor, we take it and we run, you know?
And I don't, you know, I'm not so sure.
Sorry, Dr. House.
No, you're right.
Please.
I'm so happy you're saying this.
It's true.
But it's true.
You know what?
Listen.
We get second and third opinions about our hair color.
You know what I mean?
Like, talking to our girlfriends, like, are you sure I should do this?
Are you sure?
But yet, when it comes to our health, first thing a doctor says, we go with it.
And I say to that, no.
You know, your health is the most important thing.
Make sure you get a couple of opinions, a few opinions.
That's what I did.
And ultimately, I found out that chemo wasn't a benefit for me, that it wouldn't help me, ultimately, that I didn't.
For my particular case, I didn't need it.
Yeah.
This issue of celebrities speaking out about their health has caught my attention.
Angelina Jolie, in a similar fashion, had a different diagnosis, but had her breast operation.
Recently, you all know, she talked publicly about the fact that she had her ovaries removed and her fallopian tubes.
You've been very open about your health issues.
How do you think that advances the conversation with America?
I think when people have a platform, when they're on television or in movies or on a stage, I think it's great when they use that platform, not just to sell their records and get you to their movie theater, but also to use that platform to actually share information that can change your life or save your life.
And so I like when I see the Angelina Jolie's of the world.
And I feel like there is a certain responsibility with this incredible platform.
You know, for me, I find that it's a privilege to be able to have this platform to not just talk about fashion and, you know, who's dating who, but really to give information to women that they can use.
Hallelujah.
So I love it.
I love it.
It was a sad fall for you.
You lost a very close friend and your collaborator on Fashion Police, Joan Rivers.
She's been a friend of the show as well.
You had to cover her illness, her hospitalization, and her death while being a friend of hers.
How did you deal with the sadness and the stress around that?
Gosh, that was one of the hardest things I've ever gone through in my life.
Because it felt like Joan was here one day and then she was just gone the next.
And, you know, we had just taped with Joan two days before that surgery.
And she was more vibrant and just hilarious and just present more than ever before.
What's going to happen to Fashion Police?
I mean, Kathy Griffin quit.
Kelly quit.
What's the future without Joan?
Yeah, you know, I think there were a lot of issues with this show just to begin with in this new season.
Without Joan, it was just not the same in that format.
But the producers are coming up with an exciting new format, an exciting new show.
Actually, just as a matter of fact, yesterday I had a phone call about it and they have some really fun ideas.
So it's coming back just in time for the Emmys in September.
And I think it's going to be a great show.
I think it's going to be very exciting.
Yeah.
So one of the things I learned in the book was that you juggle.
I do juggle.
So I put some balls over here.
Okay.
Oh my God.
Are we going to juggle?
We're going to just see.
Since she's wrote about it, I would normally challenge a guest.
Are you a good juggler?
I don't know if I'm a good juggler.
I do do heart surgery.
So I can juggle things.
Well, I can't do heart surgery.
Well, we'll trade off.
All right.
You're a very competitive person, aren't you?
I can tell.
What's your sign, Dr. Oz?
I'm a Gemini.
Gemini.
Leo.
Oh, you're a Leo.
I should have known you're a Leo.
Of course, my sister's a Leo.
She is?
She has all my scars on my body are for my sister.
All right, so I can take from you.
Okay.
Ready to go?
Let's go.
I'm going to take it from you.
Do it one more time.
Oh, you're going to take from me?
Yes.
I'm a taker.
Some people are givers, some are takers.
Whoa, shoot.
Hold on.
Wait, wait, wait.
Dr. Oz, hold on, hold on.
Wait, wait, wait.
I'm glad this is taped.
Okay, ready?
Give it to me.
I've never seen that.
Oh, you've never seen that?
Oh my God!
You're amazing!
Grab back, Juliette.
It's your book for you on script.
It's available now.
Be sure to check her out on E! News every weeknight on the E! Network.
We'll be right back.
Coming up next, do mothers really know best?
Do you always listen to her lessons on life?
Don't go out with wet hair.
Don't sit too close to the TV. The craziest health advice your mother ever gave you.
Should you follow them or not?
Coming up next.
All new on the Emmy-nominated Dr. Oz Show.
The disease that made superstar Avril Lavigne think she was dying.
Plus, celebrity health news they don't want you to hear.
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
There's a handle on Twitter that has caught my attention, @momsbadadvice.
Here are a few examples of moms giving what might, I think, be called bad advice.
Here's the first one.
You never know.
Some of the best pregnancies are unplanned.
Like that one.
How about this one?
You're probably allergic to wheat and gluten and dairy and sugar.
Everybody is.
If you watch the show, you might think that sometimes.
I know, but it's not true.
And then there's just simply beauty hurts, which is pretty cool.
So audience, who here has had moms give them advice that was suspect?
Go ahead.
What did your mom tell you?
If I kiss or hug a boy, I'll be pregnant.
Have you been pregnant yet?
No.
No.
Do you think that's right?
No, not anymore.
Who else?
Go ahead.
Yeah, my mom used to say that I needed to wear a bra to bed or I would end up with saggy boobs.
And?
Well, it's maybe possible.
I don't know.
It's not.
It's not possible.
All right, you don't believe it, right?
No.
Okay.
All right, so I've got Cherie, Suzanne, and Julie.
They're here.
They say, as moms, they give their kids excellent health advice.
And we'll start with Cherie.
You've got two kids, right?
You have 14 and a 20-year-old.
Yes.
Where's the health advice you give them come from?
From none other than the best, my mom.
Oh, your mom gave it to you?
Yes, of course.
You passed it on?
Yeah, I passed it on, definitely.
It worked for you.
Will she work for them?
Yeah, definitely.
I have to do what's best for my kids, so I have to give them everything my mom gave me.
All right, Suzanne, have you ever just made up the advice?
Absolutely.
Mothers are experts.
We tell them everything.
And Julie, what if they don't listen?
Oh, I tell them if they're not going to follow my advice to do it behind my back.
Very open discussions here.
I appreciate the honesty.
All right, so here's the deal.
We're going to start with you, Julie.
All right, it's your daughter, Raven.
That's her name, right?
Yes.
Raven sent us a little video.
This is a compilation of the craziest health advice that she says you have told her.
Hi, Dr. Oz.
My mom always tells me to never leave the house without putting a snack in my purse.
She thinks I might get stuck in an elevator and starve to death.
So I always do what she says and I always take a few snacks so I don't starve to death.
So, who told you that if you got stuck in an elevator, you would starve?
Where did that news come from?
Well, growing up, my mother, my grandmother, typical Jewish women would say, take something for later.
You might get stuck in a car in 10 extra minutes.
You might starve to death.
Combine that with my fear of elevators and you have the perfect advice or perfectly crazy advice.
You know how many days you can live without food?
I haven't tried yet.
You haven't tried?
If you can have water, you can probably go 30 days without food.
So, it's not really starving.
Is it more that they'll be uncomfortable?
I'll be uncomfortable.
You'll be uncomfortable because of her not having food.
Of course.
You know, my wife, Lisa, she calls me a gypsy because my mom was like you.
We never left home without a whole care packet, just in case.
But it wasn't about starving.
It was more about being happy if you were stuck in an elevator.
Love in an elevator.
Love in an elevator.
You know what?
As Jewish women, food is like American Express.
We tell our kids, never leave home without it.
That's very well said.
Thank you very much, Shirley.
All right, we go to Cherie.
What is the craziest advice you've given your daughter?
Oh, my goodness.
I've said, you know, don't sit too close to the TV. Don't watch too much TV. You'll go blind.
And I know it's true, because my mom told me.
Of course, your mom told you.
Can I do a little experiment?
Sure.
Audience, how many of you have been told that, by the way, that watching the TV goes too close?
Yeah, most of us.
I got that when I was a kid growing up.
So a little experiment.
I've got the TV here.
Are you ready?
I'm ready.
Now, I want you to tell me how close is too close.
Obviously, this is pretty far away.
Are you ready?
I'm ready.
How about here?
Is that too close?
No, that's fine.
How about here?
Fine.
How about here?
All right, Dr. Oz, I'm going blind.
You're going blind?
I'm going blind.
So, is it possible, do you think, that could hurt your eyes?
Yeah, I think so.
My mom told me so.
She knows everything.
I grew up in fear of sitting too close to the TV. Usually, I'd be sitting right in front of it, cross-legged, on the floor, of course, because the furniture wasn't close enough, and being pulled back by my hair like most of us were.
But the truth is, it doesn't do it.
It doesn't cause damage to your eyes.
What does cause damage to your eyes is watching too much TV, because it gets tired.
You don't actually damage them.
You just wear them out, and they hurt you a little bit.
Yeah.
I think your daughter's okay.
Okay.
You gonna still give that advice?
I'll still give it, but I'll know when we have it's true.
Alright, thank you.
Alright, now Suzanne's back.
Her daughter Christy's with us today.
How are you, Christy?
I'm good, and you?
So what's your story?
What's the story your mom is telling you, the advice she's giving you?
You know, my mom always put some crazy twists on the classic mom myth of when you go outside, don't go out with your hair wet or else your brain will freeze and you'll catch a cold.
So I picked these myths in part because I'd heard them a lot and so many of us have.
So it turns out this actually might have some wisdom to it.
It's not as crazy as it might sound.
There's actually a study that was done and it turns out there's a link between being cold and catching a cold.
It might actually activate the virus and do something else to weaken your immune system.
Who the heck knows?
Some of these things we haven't figured out in Western medicine, but the moms have figured out.
So Christy, to be safe from now on, to avoid the cold you have now, dry your hair.
I got you.
Good advice, Bob.
All right, it's now my turn.
My mother had lots of advice for me.
In our family, I was never allowed to sit between an open window and a door.
I don't know if you any got these, but I was told that a current, some kind of invisible current, would go between the window and the door.
Did you hear that too?
Yes.
You did?
Yes.
Chinese have the same saying.
And what do you think?
The wind goes to your body and then you'll get arthritis and everything.
Well, I'm sorry, Mom.
I've looked in this one.
There's no studies on this yet.
That's not how it seems to work.
I want to thank all the moms for being here, but they're going to come back later in the show with easy and delicious one-pot dinners.
We'll be right back.
Next, are you afraid to nap?
Worried you'll end up groggy all day?
A nap can be the secret to relieve stress, boost memory, and fight fatigue.
And you don't need a lot of time or even a bed.
The three simple steps to harness the power of power napping.
Next. Next. Next. Next. Next. Next. Next. Next.
Next.
I've always been an advocate for taking a nap, but for all of you skeptics out there, I've got breaking news.
There's brand new research that shows a short nap can relieve stress and bolster the immune system.
These are big deal issues.
So doing more for your health with this nap than even extra sleep at night would do.
So today I'm going to show you how to harness the power of power napping.
Sharon's joining us.
How are you, Sharon?
Alright, how are you?
So when you hear the word nap, what's the first thing that comes to your mind?
Well, I'm a kindergarten teacher, so I love naps.
For children.
For children.
I am pro-nap for little ones.
For me, I don't really believe I have the time in my day to do that.
Well, you're speaking for a lot of folks.
Yeah.
Now, this is one of the most important segments we're going to do.
I'm going to show you.
You don't have to have a lot of time.
You don't have to even have a bed, everybody.
All I need you to do is to understand why this power nap is so important.
It's actually going to give you superpowers to fight off exhaustion and lots of other things.
Let me give you an example.
I'm going to just list them off.
Based on this study and other ones that have been looking at napping, here's what they'll do for you.
And I'm specifically talking about superpowers because that's how important these are.
Memory boosting.
If you can't quite get things down anymore, don't blame it on your age.
It's often because of the fact that you haven't had the right sleep and napping gets you there.
It's a fatigue fighter, obviously.
We use caffeine all the time, but this is actually a much better way of getting that energy.
It's stress reducing.
And it's immune boosting.
So if I can give you these superpowers, what would you offer for them?
Oh, I have no idea.
I tell you, I suffer from all of those things.
I suffer from memory.
I definitely am fatigued all the time.
I'm stressed.
And, you know, I'm susceptible to getting sick because of it.
As you mentioned, you're a working mom.
It goes hand in hand.
All right, I'll give you three simple ways to harness the power of a power nap.
Let's start off with this little example.
The first thing I want you to do is set an alarm for 20 minutes.
You don't want to nap for longer than that.
And I'm going to explain why that's the golden zone there, why that number seems to be the right target in these different studies.
So normally, when you sleep for 90 minutes, it allows you to get into REM sleep.
REM sleep is dreamy sleep.
However, when you go halfway through that cycle, right, let's say 40 minutes in, you go into a deep sleep.
This deep sleep is really important because that deep sleep is where all the restorative stuff happens.
Your blood pressure drops, your muscles relax, you're out like a light, just completely out of the game.
And this, when you're sleeping at night, there's a great thing to happen, but you don't want that during the day.
What you want is a power nap.
20 minutes, because at 20 minutes, You only have restful sleep, right?
It's when you sort of dive into sleep, but not too deeply.
Your body temperature lowers a little bit.
Your heart rate begins to slow down a little bit, but you're not completely out of it.
It allows your mind to recover, recuperate.
It sort of recharges you.
So 20 minutes to get that.
Could that be done?
My schedule's pretty tight.
I think I might be able to try and squeeze it in maybe in the car line when I'm picking up my daughter or something like that.
I'll bargain with you.
You're just negotiating.
10 minutes.
Even 10 minutes.
I wish you had 20, but even 10 minutes take you to light sleep.
It's that small little nudge.
And I think that if people realize how powerful this little bit of movement might be in how they live their lives, they start thinking about it.
That's all the time I'll take from you.
Okay.
Okay?
All right, we got a negotiation there.
Now, second thing we're going to do, this thing you're going to like.
It's a little counterintuitive, but this actually is very important.
I want you to drink a cup of coffee before you slide down for your nap.
I call it a nappuccino.
A cup of coffee.
Okay, I love coffee.
I don't think it's going to help me sleep.
So just before you sit down or lie down, I want you to grab a cup of coffee and drink.
It takes 30 minutes to actually make a meaningful impact in your body.
You're already asleep by then.
When you wake up, the coffee will hit you.
So it'll actually wake you up in those 20 minutes that you're sleeping, take it where you want to be, the drowsiness is gone, and you'll wake up very refreshed.
So it'll allow the lull to happen in relaxation, but bring you up pretty quickly.
All right.
I mean, I'll try it, Dr. Oz.
All right.
Now, I saved the best for last.
Okay.
Most people think that they have to actually lie in a bed to get a nap.
Come on over.
I don't want you doing that.
I actually want you sitting.
I want you sitting in a chair.
I want you napping upright.
There's a couple reasons for this.
Okay.
And this is a powerful tool because it means you can do it in the car, picking the kids up, as you mentioned.
You can do it at your desk.
The key here is to be upright, but in a relaxed setting.
And then grab this pencil...
And hold it in your hand.
This is a trick used by some of the most brilliant thinkers in the world.
Albert Einstein did this.
Salvatore Dali, the big artist.
Many, many famous people have done this.
Hold the pencil in your hand, sit upright, close your eyes, and then let your mind relax.
You will actually fall asleep.
And when you fall asleep, the pencil, what happens to it?
It falls out.
And as it falls out, that sensation actually will pull you out.
So you don't get into too deep of sleep.
It's a simple little technique.
Remember, the power here is to allow your mind to relax.
When your mind relaxes, your body may come along or may not come along, but for 20 minutes a day, you do that, you will feel the difference.
That sounds fantastic.
My family would thank you, and my students will thank you, and my husband will thank you.
So in return for all those people thanking you, I'm going to give you a lot more power tips on how to get a nap on DrRoz.com.
We'll be right back.
How do you sneak power naps into your day?
If I'm sleepy, I go into my office, drink a small cup of coffee, and then immediately try to close my eyes for 20 minutes.
When I wake up, I'm rested and the caffeine has kicked in.

Lifestyle expert Tia Brown is here sharing incredible deals that will be available for a limited time on DrRoz.com.
So get ready.
Up first, a really cool device for one of my favorite foods of all time.
Tell us about it.
That's right.
We have the automatic digital yogurt maker by Your Cuisine.
It's very, very easy to use.
All you need to do is put preheated milk into this container.
You add yogurt cultures.
You put it in the machine.
Once you turn it on, you have yogurt for days.
You don't have to buy it.
It saves great money.
You know, a lot of us love eating yogurt, and we go daily to get some.
I love this idea.
And the thing that I also love is it lasts 10 days, and this top allows you to say how long it's been in the room.
Oh, there's a date in there.
Absolutely.
So you have a great tool in your house to do it.
Very easy.
The good news is, what does it cost?
It retails for $60, but you get 50% off $30.
$30.
The other good news is that you can use tons of toppings when you make this at home.
So you can add raspberries, blueberries, tons of different options.
So it's a really great way to save money and to be healthy.
Without the sugary syrups, you get the real stuff.
That's right, all preservatives.
All right, next up, second big deal.
Personal Blenders by Tribest.
I love, love, love this.
Love to get smoothies.
This way you don't have to get it on the go.
You can do it at home.
They have these containers that you can use.
You put milk in.
Add your fruit.
I like the containers.
Yes.
And these containers are really good because they're portable as well.
You blend it in here and you can also take it with you to go.
Add all your ingredients.
Make sure you have the top right side.
Stick it in here, and boom.
Smoothie to go.
Very easy, very simple.
It retails for $100.
You get up to 42% off.
We have a couple of options online, so it can be as low as $29.
Other cool factor?
There's more, there's more.
It also comes with these mason jars, so you have different options, different sizes that you can use, and you all get it with that kit.
So it's really cool.
You can make it, take it to go.
It comes right out of the blend.
It comes right out.
It's a really cool vintage mason jar, right?
So you get a lot of bargain for the buck.
All right.
Moving on to number three, a very different direction.
Right, right, right.
I love this.
This is a fresh herb gift set by Maker's Kit.
Now, if you have little kids at home or if you want to decorate in the kitchen, I think this is an awesome, awesome buy.
All the herbs grow naturally.
There are a couple of different options.
There are eight different types of herbs that come in this kit.
It's very, very simple to do.
You have volcanic rock on the bottom.
It tastes good.
He's eating the herb.
Nice, nice.
Volcanic rock on the bottom, pebbles, soil, seed, and then you add water.
All of the instructions are in here.
It retails for $62.
Get a huge discount.
50% off.
$31.
You can use this for decor.
This makes a great gift set.
This is great to show your kids, you know, about natural eating.
I just really like it.
For me, it's great for the countertop, too, right?
It's very cute.
I'm taking this home with my four kids.
And you mark it here so you know what's in each container.
And from 5 to 10 days is the average amount of time it takes for all of the herbs to grow.
So it's not a long time.
It's very practical.
It's efficient.
It's a great lesson for the kids.
Fun.
Cheap.
Thumbs up for me.
The fourth item that I hear you like a lot.
I love this.
This is the Smart Prep Pad by The Orange Chef.
And this is an item that allows you to calculate everything that you're eating.
So, you know, we're always trying to be mindful of eating healthy and making sure that things are good.
All you have to do is put the item on the Smart Pad, and it's compatible with an iPhone, an iPad, Bluetooth.
So, it's very simple.
You type it in.
Apple.
Apple.
Search.
And then the great thing here is it gives you lots of different options about what you're searching for, because we know things aren't always plain and simple, so it's loading.
It's going to give us tons of options.
So it lets us choose what type of apple this is.
So this is a red, delicious apple, yes?
139 calories.
Now, let's say we wanted to add something to that snack.
So if it was a bigger apple, it would tell you it's more calories.
Yes, it would tell you it's more.
So it's weighing it.
So if we wanted to add some almonds, add a few more.
What's on the prep pad?
We type it in.
Almonds.
Search.
And the answer is?
Great.
And it gives us different options again.
And now it says those additional almonds are 116 calories.
Now you get to make an informed choice about what you're eating.
And it tells us how much is fat and how much is carbs.
It's so smart.
Great way to make sure that you're eating healthy, eating what you want.
And what's it cost?
And it only costs, it retails for $150, but it only costs for Dr. Oz viewers, what's happening?
$75.
It's $75.
50% off.
No, I like it.
That's good.
That's the best we can.
I know math.
Okay.
That's good.
Yes.
Yes.
Come over to the final product.
You saved a very efficient tool for the last one.
Yes, I like to call this Racks on Racks on Racks, right?
It's by Oven Essentials Knitty Home, and it's several racking systems in one.
So you get three items for the price of almost none, right?
So this one is a cookie sheet.
It expands.
Oh, look at that.
So a cooling sheet for different baked goods.
You can use cookies, breads, whatever you want.
And the next item is in the oven.
Here, I'll get this.
Oh, it's hot!
No, I'm just kidding.
Just kidding, just kidding.
So this is a rack for roast.
Great way to transport it.
This also expands.
Oh yeah, I can see.
And you also have a stackable rack.
So if you want to heat things or if you want to cook things simultaneously, it's done very easily.
Now this normally retails for $46 and we get 50% off.
One, two, three dollars.
The most efficient thing in the kitchen.
I think this is a great deal.
$46 for $23.
$23 is the final prize.
So racks on racks on racks for $23.
All right, take advantage of these folks.
You go to DrRoz.com slash shopping therapy for these deals and some special bonus buys as well.
Take advantage of it.
Audience, I could never do this show without you, as you all know.

How many of you hate hearing these three words?
What's for dinner?
Is it true?
Everyone at home probably feels the same way.
I've got one-pot wonders.
These are meals that require only one pot to make.
Cherie, Suzanne, and Julie are back for more motherly advice with their easy one-pot dinner recipes.
They're going to test their one-pot meals.
I've been listening to three very hungry husbands.
Howard, Chris, and Michael.
Now, just to be clear...
These are not the husbands of these women.
We wanted to avoid any conflicts of interest.
Men, are you up for the challenge?
Yes, absolutely.
Taste test is ready.
First up, Cherie, with her cherry tomato frittata.
All right, so this cherry tomato frittata, it's so easy, it's simple.
As you see, I've already started sautéing the vegetables.
Smell it.
Smells good, doesn't it?
Yeah.
So what I'm going to get you to do is start to crack in those eggs.
Oh, I'm really good at eggs.
Because you didn't know you were going to have to work with me.
I'm really good at eggs.
Here, just hold those for me for a second.
I will.
Yeah.
And don't be a slob.
Make sure you put the shells in the bowl for me.
Oh, wow.
Oh, he's a pro.
You're a pro!
Hold the applause to the end.
Hold the applause to the end.
Alright, so when you put the eggs in, you add some egg white.
Dump it on in there.
You add some milk here.
The good thing about this, you can add whatever vegetables you want.
That's some parsley and some basil.
You add a little bit of salt, but you know, you can save some at the end so you can sprinkle it on the top.
And then it's simple.
Okay, we're going to whisk it a little bit here, Dr. Oz.
You can do a little dance with it to make it a little better.
I'm going to whisk her.
Just whisk it up.
We're getting it in.
You know, put a little love in it.
So how long do you cook these vegetables before you add the eggs to it?
You just want to brown them a little bit.
And then once they're a little browned, they're sauteed just perfectly.
You want to dump it on and dump the egg in there.
And let it just cook for a couple seconds.
Just make sure it gets a little brown.
We're going to stick it in the oven after it starts to simmer a little bit.
Swap it out.
And that's what it looks like.
The magic of television.
Voila.
That's what it looks like.
Men, please taste away...
What do you guys think?
Let me hear your voices.
It is absolutely delicious.
Oh!
Delicious.
If it was your husband, I wouldn't have been...
That's very well done.
You all agree?
All right.
Now, they're going to have to vote on a winner yet, so we don't celebrate quite yet.
Okay, next up is Suzanne.
She's got our vegetable egg drop soup.
Why are you such a fan of this soup?
Because it's quick, it's easy, and you don't have to worry about measurements or anything, and it's a meal that my kids always love, and everybody has a bag of frozen vegetables.
All right.
So you put in a couple of slices of ginger, and you put in your frozen vegetables.
By the way, you notice, by the way, the ginger is the magic sauce here, so you haven't cut them up too much.
Pretty easy to do.
Yeah, because the kids won't eat them, so you just pull them out.
But you put the frozen vegetables in.
Kids won't eat them!
The nihilism.
She's given up.
But the flavor is wonderful.
So then you whisk up some eggs, and once it boils up, you slowly...
Are we going to break more eggs for you?
No, we're good.
And then we slowly drizzle.
And when you drizzle, you get that egg drop look.
See?
Oh, yes!
That's why they call it egg drop.
Right.
Egg drop soup.
And then you put a couple of cans of stewed tomatoes.
The whole thing?
That's it.
And once it boils up, you're all done.
And here's dinner.
Men, what do you think?
Very, very good.
Very good.
Two thumbs up.
Really good.
They're so easy to please.
Maybe I'm more disturbing.
Oh, the egg drop's perfect.
And I taste the ginger, too.
Yep.
And you can add a little pastina, or if you want some carbs, some rice if you want.
Very solid, practical advice.
Thank you very much.
Okay, finally, one more, one pot wonder to talk about.
This is Julie's special.
She's saved this because she thinks it's superb.
This is actually an unstuffed pepper.
Is it true that we saved the best for last?
Is that true?
That is.
All right, either way, man, I want honest opinions.
Why do you make this dish when you're under the gun?
Well, as a working mom, I also cringe when I hear the words, what's for dinner?
And I think to myself, didn't I just feed these kids yesterday?
Yes.
When that doesn't work, I refer them to their pocketbook or pocket, the whole elevator segment.
And if there's nothing left, then ultimately I have to cook something.
So being pressed for time, I make this unstuffed pepper.
I ground the turkey.
I drain it.
Then I take some...
Tomatoes?
Just a little tomato sauce or just cracked tomatoes?
Just diced tomatoes.
Peppers, green peppers.
Peppers on the inside, not the outside.
On the inside.
Some onions.
Mix it all around.
That comes later.
Some seasoning.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
That's okay.
Those are the magic words any man can say, by the way.
Okay.
I'm sorry or I'm trying to help.
You mix that all up, get a little bit of slow boil, and then you throw in some brown rice.
It's the instant brown rice.
Mix it all together.
Then you immediately cover it, and you would remove it from the heat.
And what about this stuff?
That's for extra flavor after.
If you want it a little bit tomatoey, you can add it for taste.
And water just to give it a little bit of steam?
Oh, water's because I forgot it.
Aha!
See, you are here to help.
Finally, something I did right.
Okay, men.
That's my kind of meal.
It is.
I like that very much.
I'm putting my bib on now to try these.
I've tried making stuffed peppers before, and they always fall apart, so it just gave itself its name to unstuffed peppers.
I've had good excuse this way.
You know, it's actually interesting.
You putting it inside of it makes it part of the meal, but doesn't intimidate you because a lot of people don't like peppers.
Right, they cave in sometimes, they fall, they get too well done.
Some of you love meat, some of you like veggies.
You've had a little bit of everything.
I want you guys to convene.
I want an opinion, honest opinion, of which one you think is the best.
Okay.
Alright, here goes.
They can't decide.
Be decisive.
Be men.
Come on.
Personally, I like the stuffed peppers, unstuffed peppers.
That was my favorite.
I agree with Chris here.
I like the peppers.
I like the way the flavors blend.
It was a very good meal.
But the final vote comes.
Well, I thought all three dishes were absolutely delicious.
He's running for office.
He's running for office.
But my personal favorite would have to be the frittata.
I thought it was very light.
You know what?
In my book, you're all winners because your mom, God bless you all.
Thank you, man, for playing along.
All these recipes are on DrEyes.com.
Make every one of them try them out with your families.
We'll be right back.
All new on the Emmy-nominated Dr. Oz Show.
Music superstar Avril Lavigne thought she was dying.
Dr. Oz on the disease that left her bedridden for months.
Plus, celebrity health news they don't want you to hear.
Our panel of experts have the inside scoop.
And he lost a whopping 237 pounds.
It's like a dream come true.
Dr. Oz breaks down how he did it.
And you can too.
That's coming up tomorrow.
Have you ever looked in the mirror and wondered, what if I lost 10 or 20, maybe even 50 pounds?
Would it really make a difference in how I look?
Well, no wonder it's an important issue.
We struggle with it, but you don't have to wonder about it anymore.
Here's a brand new app called Visualize You.
It's like a mirror to your future.
It gives you a picture, literally, of what losing weight could mean to your looks.
It's pretty simple.
We're going to try it right now, and I asked Sal and Barbara from the audience to help me demonstrate.
They have no idea what they're getting into.
Barbara might, but Sal, sure, I can guarantee it.
Okay, here's how it works.
You take a picture, take a picture of Sal, right?
Then, very simply, you've got to put in how tall you are, because that's important.
5'9", right?
How much do you weigh currently?
He's 215?
Mm-hmm.
Is that right, Barbara?
Yeah.
Thank you.
Then you went instead of target weight.
So we picked 155 because someone who's your height would do well with a weight of 155. You don't have to get there, but that's the thought.
Accept it.
Then what you got to do is identify where your eyes are and where your chin is because it's going to very accurately tell you what's going to happen if you lose that weight.
So here are your eyes.
That's not quite where I want it.
That looks good.
All right, then you move this part a little here.
Just identify.
It takes two seconds.
And once you've done that, now you're locked in.
You're locked and loaded.
And we'll see how to do that.
And now you have an after picture if you were to lose the weight.
This is your real picture, by the way.
Right, right, right.
You see the difference?
That's where you are now.
If you were to lose the weight, that's you.
Now, what do you think, Barbara?
You like this version more or that version to sell?
That way.
Go ahead and do it.
Actually, you don't have to go all the way to...
Show me where you like him, actually.
That's about right there.
169. That's your goal.
Okay.
All right.
Now, let's say we're going to change the target weight.
And let's say we're worried about you being going...
Let's say you're going to go up some weight.
We don't want you to gain weight.
Let's say you went up...
I don't know.
What if you went up to this?
You gained 150 pounds.
Ooh.
Ooh.
You see that?
I'll look like Richie.
You look like Richie, our comedian here.
Yes.
That would be very good.
Sal, I knew I liked you from the moment I met you.
No wonder you married him.
So if you're worried about going up, you can go down.
Listen, for a lot of us, we associate We appreciate weight change with our hips and our belly.
It's the face.
It's our face that other people see first.
It's often the most affected by changes in weight.
So I firmly believe that being able to visualize positive results like this and some negative results, perhaps, if you're worried about gaining weight, it's a great health motivator.
