Time Text
Today on Oz, junk drawers, cluttered closets, messy medicine cabinets.
This mask can cause you stress by blood pressure, weight gain, anxiety.
Get ready to clean up, declutter your house, and de-stress your body.
Here's the simplest tip you can do to declutter your closet.
Plus, how Al Roker finally figured out how to control his weight.
Why he's never going back to fat.
Coming up next on Dr. Oz.
Alright, now, I want to take a look at this.
These are photos of your homes and your clutter.
And this mask can cause you stress.
That stress shows up as high blood pressure.
It shows up as weight gain, anxiety, headaches, and fatigue.
Let's start off with this problem.
Whose mess is this?
Let me see.
There's the guilty party.
Come on.
Come on down, man.
I had all your homes, by the way.
I had so many I could have chosen from.
How are you?
What's your first name?
Howard.
Carol, so what is going on in that picture?
Like a war zone in there.
I have a lot of stuff.
Does it always look like that?
No, sometimes it can be worse.
Alright, so the reason I'm interested in clutter, obviously, is I'm interested in how it affects your mindset.
How it affects the role you're going to play in your own life and how you're going to show up in it.
So when you see that little picture there on a scale of 1 to 10, what does that do to your stress level?
Raises it like about an eight, so it's eight.
There's a lot of stuff in there.
Who wants to walk into that?
That's the point of today's show.
Not to blame you for it, but to show you ways of getting past that clutter so you can address the health issues that it can manifest.
So I brought a new world expert to help you and me out.
Author and professional organizer Peter Walsh is here with a plan to declutter your house and de-stress your body.
So, I worked with Peter for 10 years.
I love the tips.
Type back, if you can, this issue of clutter to stress.
Look, it's really interesting.
When we talk about clutter in our homes, we use language like, I felt suffocated.
I couldn't breathe.
I felt buried.
And that's because we know what it does to us at that level.
But at another level, if your home is cluttered, the physical space is stressed, but it's also all the stress in here.
Anxiety, depression, you'd be surprised that 77% of people who are super cluttered are also struggling with being obese or overweight.
It's a big, big problem.
And it's subconscious, I think, for a lot of people.
It's a self-fulfilling prophecy.
So we've got a plan today to help clutter and de-stress your life.
Let's start with it.
If we can, we'll start off with your closet, Carol.
Okay.
I'll support you through this painful process.
So, Peter, what's the biggest issue here?
Okay, look.
In any closet, if you step into your closet first thing in the morning and you can't find what you want to wear, stuff is on the floor, you feel overwhelmed, that is not the way to start your day because there it is right there.
It sets the tone for the day.
There it is.
It sets the tone and I'm sure everyone here has had exactly that experience.
So a very simple tip.
Number one, Get rid of anything that you no longer use, love, or wear.
Number two, arrange things in categories.
Like things together, or by season, it's quick and easy to find the things you need, summer or winter.
Really simple thing to do.
Carol, and this is actually, I mean, you both comment.
When I look at that picture of your closet, like a lot of the viewers' closets, there's no way you can fit that all in there.
No, I use my son's, I use my husband's closet.
Or you invade their closets like a cancer, metastasizes, spread.
Do you actually wear all the clothes you have in the house?
One day I may.
One day you may.
There it is.
Don't laugh because I know you guys are all thinking it for yourselves.
So what do we do with the one day I may people who are thinking maybe one day I may?
Here's the simplest, simplest tip you can do today to declutter your closet.
Take every single thing in your closet and hang it the opposite way around.
Hang everything.
Look at the confused look on your face right now.
Can't get it that way.
Okay.
Just turn all the hangers back to front.
Then, every time you wear an article of clothing, Hang it up the correct way.
When you wear an article of clothing, hang it up the correct way.
At the end of six months, anything that's still hanging back to front, you are never going to wear off to goodwill.
Wear it for two seasons if it doesn't work.
So if you had to go through that closet and the stuff you have in your husband's and your son's closet, what percentage of that stuff you think may end up like this in the giveaway pile after six months?
50%.
Half.
If not more.
I guarantee 80. 80%?
I guarantee.
Here's the thing.
You wear 20% of your clothes 80% of the time.
You wear 20% of your clothes 80% of the time.
Give it a shot.
I promise, I promise, I promise.
If you declutter it, you will have the morning...
There it is, the morning smile that says, my closet is helping me, not stressing me out.
Here, Carol, take this home with you.
It's a little present from the show.
Thank you very much.
I appreciate it.
Alright, next, look at this drawer.
How many of you have a drawer that looks just like this?
This photo actually belongs to Nancy.
Where's Nancy?
Hi, Nancy.
How are you?
Nice to meet you.
Is that an accurate picture?
Yes.
Where are your junk drawers?
Everywhere.
There's one in every room of the house.
Oh my goodness.
Yes, and there's three in the kitchen.
Three Trump tours.
So Peter says everyone has to go through these junk drawers and get rid of them.
I have a junk drawer at home, which I was too shy to share mine, so I'm glad you did yours.
But I would never be able to get rid of the junk drawer.
Wrong.
Absolutely wrong.
It's like if I said to you I can't exercise, you would slap me into next week.
Here's the thing.
Here's the thing with your junk drawer.
Number one, you have to change your mindset.
You don't have a junk drawer.
You have a utility drawer.
Because if you don't change your language, it's okay to have this.
It's not okay.
So here's what you do.
Don't look so worried.
We're helping you out here.
You've got three of these in your kitchen.
Okay, here's what you do.
You take everything out of the...
Soon to be utility drawer, throw it on the kitchen counter and you set it, divide it into three piles.
Trash, stuff that belongs elsewhere, or stuff that you do need in the utility drawer.
Let's try this quickly.
Where does this belong?
In the garage.
Great.
Great.
Where does this belong?
In the yard.
Okay, great.
Or in the garage as well.
Flashlight.
Would you like a flashlight in the utility drawer?
Great.
Pens and pencils.
Would you like these in the utility drawer?
Okay, so then you throw trash out.
Okay.
You put this stuff elsewhere and you arrange like items together.
Pens and pencils, batteries, clips.
In little boxes, you can even cut a pasta box in half and drop it in the drawer to create like categories.
That will organize your utility drawer.
Simple, simple thing.
Do it and I promise you will look at it and think, my heart is singing with joy because stress is gone from these drawers, I promise.
Some of this stuff, like this old letter here, is going to have to be trash.
That's right.
I've noticed you've got garage stuff.
You make a junk drawer there by mistake.
It's not your key, but you have to push yourself.
Now, what's this drawer for?
What do you do with this?
Okay, that's called create a free money drawer.
In every, every single home I go into, in junk drawers, I find coupons and gift cards often worth $400, $500, $600.
Absolutely.
So here's what you do.
You take all of these gift cards or coupons and you create a free money drawer.
Put it somewhere in your house, and look at the surprised look on your face.
It's like found money.
There it is.
It is found money.
And again, do you see something as simple as organising a drawer in your house absolutely reduces the stress you have, and when you open that drawer, I promise, it will...
Well, I was at dinner last night here, and a woman on the next table leaned over and said to me, you're Peter Walsh.
When I look at you, you're my Prozac.
Oh, my.
And it's a funny thing to say.
What a great line, yeah.
But there it is.
It just...
Yeah, that's exactly it.
So, I'd like the $500 of found money.
Yeah, me too.
Thank you very much.
All right, medicine cabinet.
Here we are.
Robin's got a medicine cabinet.
Hello, Dr. Oz.
And this medicine cabinet, you showed that little picture she showed us.
It's not a very attractive place, but it is unfortunately reflective of what we all do.
So, how do you find anything in that picture we just looked at?
Well, Dr. Oz, I really don't.
As a matter of fact, when I open up the cabinet, everything falls down.
And I have to try to see, catch it from falling.
And I even saw that I had a bar of soap in there, and I went out and brought another bar of soap.
Because I didn't see it in there.
Yeah, we talked about found money a second ago.
That's lost money.
Yes.
Again, we all make mistakes.
So you argue that we have to change our medicine cabinet completely, including things like magnetizing it.
That's exactly it.
Now, grab a metallic strip.
Throw it in the cabinet and then all of these little metal things you can get out of the way and throw them up onto the back of the medicine cabinet or the back of the door.
Really, again, de-stresses you, makes it look great.
And the other thing you can do is if you have less stuff in here, only the stuff you use, it's easy to keep clean and you will never waste money again buying stuff that you already have.
It's a money saver as well.
Wow, that's great.
Good luck, Tigers.
Go get them.
Thank you.
Next area we're going to tackle is the kitchen.
So...
This is actually a place in my house where we have the biggest problem, and we just heard that some people have three junk drawers in their kitchen.
That's true.
This is a classic drawer.
How many of you have a drawer that looks like that, everybody?
Come on, be honest.
How many have a drawer like that?
Look at this.
Exactly.
I do too.
You said we need to do the cardboard box test.
The one-month cardboard box test.
Take everything out of the kitchen drawer, throw it into the cardboard box.
Leave it on the kitchen counter.
For the next month, every time you use an item and wash it, you put it back into the drawer.
Do that for just one month.
At the end of a month, whatever is still in the box, with the exception of something like a turkey baster, for example, that you use at Thanksgiving, all of this stuff can go with the clothes that are going to goodwill.
You just don't need all the excess.
And when you again open the drawer, your heart will sing with excitement at the lack of clutter.
Now, I was reading through your book, which is superb.
Thank you.
And you actually argue that this little process here will allow us to eat healthier.
Now, how is that?
Yeah, look, people focus on the food they put in their mouths.
But for me, it's much more than that.
Look, I'm the decluttering guy.
I've been doing this for more than 10 years.
Every single time people create a space that helps reduce stress and makes their life more efficient, it just creates a healthier life.
You can't make your best choices in a cluttered, messy, disorganized house, and the book is all about that.
Six weeks, every day for six weeks, how to declutter, an exercise plan, a meal plan, and a mindfulness plan be in your life.
All right, so here's the deal.
How many of you would like to take Peter home with you?
I would.
You can take him home to declutter with you.
Here's his book.
It's called Lose the Clutter, Lose the Weight, and you are all going home with your own copy.
Enjoy.
We'll be right back.
Come on up, man.
I'll tell you the public.
Come on up.
Next.
America watches him every morning and witnessed his shifting weight for years.
Weatherman Al Roker shares how gastric bypass surgery ended years of stormy weight issues.
What he did to finally take control of his weight.
Coming up next.
All new Oz.
Your biggest health questions.
Answered by Dr. Andrew Weil.
From battling joint pain to kicking a hangover.
My two favorite remedies.
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
He's America's weatherman, but for years, Al Roker was hiding behind a dark cloud.
His weight.
At his heaviest, Al weighed 340 pounds.
And then, more than a decade ago, he made headlines when he underwent gastric bypass surgery and he lost 140 pounds.
But five years later, Al regained 40 pounds.
In his own words, he said they proved it was possible to eat through a bypass.
Got a lot of folks confused.
Now the clouds have lifted and Al says he has finally figured out how to control his weight.
And he's never going back to his old heavy self.
Please welcome Al Roker.
Thank you, my friend.
Good to see you.
I have to see you.
You know, having a light, you've always had lots of energy.
Yes.
Which I've always adored about you.
Thank you.
But there's no question weight takes a toll at many levels.
And you're one of the first real, well-known, respected people just to come out there and be honest and share publicly your struggles with weight.
Why?
You know, when I had the bypass, it was funny.
I thought, well, nobody's going to really notice.
You know?
I'm just going to lose this weight.
And then I realized, you know, people started calling, is Al Roker okay?
Is everything okay?
I thought, you know, I've got to admit to this.
And so I did.
Because I want people to know there's no shame in this.
You know, a lot of people, I got a lot of stuff on social media even back then.
Oh, you've cheated.
You know, you had a bypass.
You didn't do it the real way.
I'm like, what are you talking about?
Something.
Somebody went in, made holes where there weren't, and rearranged my plumbing.
That's not easy.
That's not exactly a cheat.
So that's why I decided, you know what, people need to know.
Take me back to the first time you remember being concerned about your weight and going on a diet to try to lose something.
It goes all the way back to when I was a teenager.
My mom and dad were worried.
I was a heavy kid.
They signed me up for this program.
It was kind of like Weight Watchers.
I knew it wasn't probably that good because the person who was running it was overweight.
That's a bad sign.
This can't be that good.
But even back then, I was always a chunky kid.
I was in the husky department at Montgomery Wards.
They were going to strap me to a dog sled.
That's right, the husky.
I'm husky, yeah.
But it's always been a battle.
It's always been a fight.
When I was a teenager, when I was a young adult, I've always battled.
And I've always been able to lose some weight.
I'd use 10, 20, 30 pounds, but I'd always gain it back and then gain an extra 10 besides.
For good measure.
And it was almost like my body was punishing me.
Okay, you're going to lose weight.
I'll show you, Tubby.
So, you've described the weight.
As being a third person in your marriage.
Yes.
Always there, impacting on your relationships.
I'd love to understand a bit more about that.
You know, I'm married to Deborah Roberts, who's on 2020. She's a person who's very healthy, runs, exercises, size 4. And at my worst, I was a size 60 jacket and a size 54 pair of pants, you know, and didn't exercise, didn't do anything.
And it was...
And she...
Look, out of caring, out of love, would nag me.
And I think the worst thing people can do is nag.
Because it...
We all know we're fat.
We know...
We don't live in this world without mirrors.
I mean, we know.
But at the end of the day, you have to do it for yourself.
So...
But the problem was, I'd get upset, she'd get upset, we'd argue.
If I get upset, well, I'm going to make myself feel better.
Well, you know, that Entenmann's looks pretty darn good.
Very soothing.
And, you know, for that 15, 20 minutes you're eating the Entenmann's, you feel pretty good.
And then, of course, you finish.
You feel horrible.
Now you feel badly about yourself.
So what do you do?
Eat some more.
I mean, it's just a vicious cycle.
So what finally got you going?
What connected emotionally with you?
If it's not the nagging, how did you commit to making the change?
You know, it...
My dad actually put me on the path to this.
He, about 16 years ago, developed lung cancer.
And I would go see him at Sloan Kettering every morning before the Today Show.
And this one morning, I finally broke down.
I knew that he was dying.
And he says, listen, I'm upset I'm not going to make 50 years of marriage with your mother.
I'm upset I'm not going to make my 70th.
But I'm okay with that.
What I'm really most worried about is you.
I'm not going to be here.
We both know this.
I'm not going to be here to help you raise my grandchildren.
So I want you to swear to God right now, you're going to lose weight.
That's what he wanted?
He's wasting away, losing weight.
He's wasting away.
Literally, he's losing weight.
And I said, I promise.
No, no, I want you to swear to God you're going to lose weight.
I said, I swear to God I did.
And I came back to see him that afternoon, and he couldn't talk.
The cancer had hit his brain, and he was gone two weeks later.
And for about a month and a half, you know, you get through the holidays, and then all of a sudden I realized, I've got to keep this promise.
And so I tried every diet known to man.
And I finally came to gastric bypass and I went to a great doctor named Dr. Marina Kurian and did the bypass.
And like you know, as you know, the weight just falls off.
And I thought I had kind of licked this thing.
And then five years later, my mom got sick.
And I was going to the hospital every day.
She was out at Long Island Jewish North Shore.
That was about an hour drive, back and forth, back and forth.
You know what I've realized?
One of the worst places you can try to eat healthily is at a hospital.
Impossible.
That's true.
It's really bad.
And I fell back into old habits.
And before you know it, in three months, my mother was in the hospital.
I gained 40 pounds back.
Then she passed away, and I thought, you know what?
My mom's gone.
I don't feel any better, and I'm 40 pounds heavier.
This is nuts.
I can't do this.
So you lost the weight, and you kept it off since, which is, I gotta say, it's unbelievable.
Thank you.
So people who actually make those changes...
What changed?
What's different now that makes you think you won't regain that weight in the future?
You know what?
I have a different relationship with food.
I had a good buddy that had lost a lot of weight.
He had gone on a cleanse.
I tried that.
And getting rid of the food for a period of time, all the sugars, the carbs, the white flour stuff, it made me appreciate food.
And once I had gotten rid of it, I could build it back.
And I realized food didn't control me.
I could control this food.
So you start making changes, little changes.
I mean, I started running a little bit.
I actually ran the New York City Marathon once.
It counts.
It counts.
You know, I bike to work.
I walk.
We've got a dog now, a little rescue pup.
I walk her.
You know, I stop taking the elevator at work.
Okay, they're replacing the elevator at work.
Fuck!
I'm not taking the elevator.
I can't because it's not there.
What do you typically eat right now?
What's a breakfast?
I usually have a small protein in the morning, like a hard-boiled egg, some almond butter.
I drink this kombucha, this fermented Chinese tea.
I put a lot of fresh ginger in it.
You know, for lunch, a salad with maybe a little protein or some sushi.
And dinner, you know, the trick is, Oz, we eat in a lot.
I cook a lot.
So that we got smaller plates at home.
When I go out to dinner, I tell them, you know what, just take half of what's on my plate and put it in a doggy bag.
And let me have the rest.
These tactics that we talk about, folks are aware of, but to see it done right, You get this.
This is what I love.
It feels good.
It feels good.
My son, who is 12, doesn't know me as the fat dad.
So for the many, many fellows out there, friends, fans, who are watching you right now, give them a message.
People are overweight and just don't think they can do it.
The message is, until you do it for yourself, You can't do it for your wife or your kids or your family.
I mean, look, my dad got me thinking about it, but I knew I had to do this for myself.
I decided to do it, not because my wife wanted me to or my mom or anybody like that.
And once you realize that you're being selfish in a sense, that if you're not good for yourself, you can't be good for anybody else.
Not at all.
It's your obligation.
All right, Frank, thank you for being here.
Be sure to check out every weekday morning on Good to Taste Show.
We'll be right back.
Next, do you ever wish you could turn back time and be the way you once were?
Wipe the slate clean and start over again.
Learn how to stop your health from spiraling out of control.
The do-over plan for anyone who wants to regain their health.
Coming up next.
Coming up next.
A way to wipe the slate clean and start all over.
Today, I'm giving you the chance to change your health destiny.
My name is Christine and I'm a 39-year-old wife and mother of three children.
I grew up in a Spanish household where food was how we showed our love.
But the food I ate was not the healthiest.
Rice and beans is high in sodium, a lot of fried foods.
They were staple growing up and it's a staple now.
Growing up I drank bottles of soda and would walk around with a brown paper bag filled with candies.
Even now as an adult, I love to comfort myself with ice cream.
My body's totally paying the price.
I have high blood pressure, diabetes.
This is my life support.
This is where I have my high blood pressure medication, my water pill, my acid reflux, and my insulin.
My cardiologist told me that if I didn't lose 50 pounds, I have very high chances of dying and not being around for my children.
I'm at the point where I'm worried that the damage is irreversible and I need to change.
The problem is I feel that I'm destined to lead this unhealthy life.
I've tried every diet under the sun.
I've lost the weight only to gain it back.
I feel like a bad mom.
I feel like I haven't been the correct role model for my children.
I don't know how to fix this vicious cycle.
I really want to get back on track for my 40th birthday.
It's time for me to get my act together, wipe the slate clean, and learn new healthy habits.
So, Christine, how would your life be different if your health hadn't spiraled out of control?
I would have energy, I would be happy, and my children would see a better mom.
Waking up exhausted drains me, feeling unrested.
The weight carries a toll, and it's taken a toll on my whole family's life.
You're pretty emotional about this.
Is it because of the impact it has on your kids?
Absolutely.
My kids, my husband, I need to be there for them.
And I need me to be a better mom, better person, and not have the worry of passing away young.
I don't want that either.
Neither do I. In the piece, I sense that you wanted to change how you eat.
In fact, you said those words.
Yes.
What does that mean?
I need to incorporate healthier food, rice and beans, because it's inexpensive.
It's the go-to for a Spanish family.
Vegetables sometimes weigh, they cost a lot and they go bad in my house.
Rice and beans is 20 minutes and you're done.
So I need a change.
I need vegetables.
I need to teach my children how to get better.
So I'm going to walk you through a plan.
And I don't want Blaine to be part of this plan.
Because what you're saying speaks to a lot of folks out there watching right now.
I know it's hard.
I get it.
And that's why this plan is designed for people who have those challenges.
But I'm going to start off with you.
Because if you're not where you are in life, they can't follow you.
Absolutely.
To the promised land of health.
Absolutely.
All right.
Come on back here.
In the TrueTube, I took advantage of some of the insights we had on you.
Okay.
And I'm going to talk very specifically about what's going on inside your body.
Okay.
So there are a lot of things in you that are high.
Mm-hmm.
And I saw that prescription drawer with all those bottles in there.
Yes.
Which is too many for a woman who's 39. Yes.
So, if you have high blood pressure, which you have, you gotta take pills for it.
Your blood pressure is, in fact, it is high.
Yes.
So, unfortunately, today it has to be treated with medications with their side effects.
Yes.
How about diabetes?
Well, your blood sugar is high.
Yes.
The other thing that's high in you is your CRP, which you don't know about, but I'm gonna teach you about.
Okay.
Because we check your bloods.
Okay.
CRP is one of the best tests to figure out how inflamed you are.
It tells me that there's a raging civil war inside of you.
Absolutely.
And it affects everything happening inside of you.
The weight gain, but also how you think about life, how you feel, depression, all these things travel with it.
And your CRP is really, really high.
I've been told this before by my doctor.
You have?
Yes.
Alright.
There's only one thing that's low in you.
Anemia.
Anemia, your iron.
The only thing that's low, you shouldn't be low.
Your iron's low, but that's again, these are issues, and I look at this right there, and you might say, oh my goodness, throw the towel in, I'm a failure, I can't make it happen.
All of that can be undone.
There's not a single thing up there you can't change, and change quickly.
That's actually the big message of the whole show, right?
This is not your destiny.
It just happens to be a trip that you happen to be on.
You've made a wrong turn on it.
We can get you back on the highway to health by changing all those things pretty evidently.
And you have done something really important without realizing it.
You gave yourself a deadline.
Yes.
Right?
You're 300, if I got it right, 57 days away from your next birthday.
Yes.
What is it that's so magical about the number 40 that makes you want to change right now?
I want to be around for my children.
I lost my mom at the age of 45. I'm sorry.
So I need to be here for my children.
I was 30 when she died.
So my kids are 4, 11 and 10. I need to be here for them.
You will be here with them.
Yes.
I brought someone in that I trusted for a long time.
Dr. Michael Roizen is here with his new book, The Do-Over Plan.
His message, it's never too late to get a second chance to change your health destiny.
Christine is like so many folks.
Why is it that you're so confident in all the work you've done, and he really is the world expert in this.
Why are you so confident that she should get a second chance in life?
She did the right things.
Everyone can get a second chance.
So the first step is to forgive yourself.
So we tend to forgive ourselves with many things, but not in health.
We say it's hopeless, right?
No one should feel hopeless.
So you've got to get your respect back by forgiving yourself.
I've had those cookies.
I've gained the weight.
I lost it.
I gained it back.

All new Oz.
Your biggest health questions answered by Dr. Andrew Weil.
From battling joint pain to kicking a hangover.
My two favorite remedies.
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
If you're just joining us, we're giving you the do-over plan to undo the damage that you have done and change your health.
Dr. Michael Rosen is back, along with Christine.
Dr. Rosen told us the first step to a successful do-over is to forgive yourself for mistakes that you have already made.
I want you to wipe the slate clean.
Completely emptied out.
Now let's start the do-over.
Let's start it all over again.
First, you've got to detox your mind and Before you detox, the body.
They go hand in hand, but start with the mind.
How do you actually do that?
Well, the real problem is that you have habits that you've built up, and they are ingrained in your mind.
You think about lunch, and you think about rice and refried beans, right?
Yes.
So that's the problem, if you will.
So you've got to change the habits, and the way you do that is by changing your mind.
So what you find is, what's your biggest Achilles heel?
And then write yourself a prescription.
Instead of having refried beans, I might have some other, if you will, just black beans or something that's flavored that you love.
So you want to do this so that the habit is an enjoyable, a really fun habit, but also healthy.
What's your Achilles heel?
Sugar.
We got a solution for that today.
I thought you might pick sugar.
Comes up a lot.
Dr. Roizzi, we have to detox the body.
We have to get started somewhere.
How do you actually begin?
So what you have is a problem with food choices.
They got you in the problem in the first place because there are five food felons that you need to get rid of.
And the first is your Achilles heel, simple sugar.
So things that are simple sugars and turn into sugars fast.
Simple sugar, syrups, and non-100% whole grains.
Number four is trans fat.
So it just poisons your receptors so you can't get, it poisons the insulin receptor so you can't get rid of the glucose in your blood and it just poisons the proteins more.
And the fifth one is saturated fat.
It changes how your genes function so it adds to this and adds to inflammation.
So you've got to get rid of those five food phones.
So what you do is you go into your pantry and you find anything with one of those five in the first five ingredients and you say, I'm never going to buy that again.
And then, when you restock things, you restock by reading the first five ingredients and never get one of those in something you're going to buy.
Absolutely.
Come on back.
There's a big mindset we have to shift now.
I want you to stop counting calories.
You actually knew the calorie intake you had.
Yes.
Which I don't want to worry about.
From now on, I want you to start counting quality.
It's a whole different ballgame.
Explain how quality adds up pretty quickly.
Well, quality is really important because it is what will decrease your blood pressure.
It is what will, in fact, help you get rid of type 2 diabetes or at least make it much less severe.
So the first thing, if you see here, there's fiber.
Now you can get fiber from the blueberries, from fruits and vegetables.
They're wonderful.
So on a plate, I like to have half of the plate being fruits and vegetables.
It's hard to go wrong with fruits and vegetables.
And then season them.
So you like sugar, so cinnamon is a great seasoning to put on them to give you that sugary taste.
The second thing you see here is some nuts, which are relatively lean protein.
And then skinless chicken and skinless turkey and fish, those are lean proteins.
So they should be about a quarter of your plate.
And then the whole grains, there's some whole grains here.
They should be, we like whole grains and they have a lot of good nutrients with them.
So if you want it, make sure they're 100% whole grains.
And then the fourth thing on the plate is unsaturated fat.
So that's in fish and olive oil and nuts.
So those are unsaturated fats that are healthy that keep your arteries clean.
So one of the big things, both diabetes and high blood pressure make it more likely for you to have heart disease or arterial disease.
And get your arteries much older.
We want your arteries to get younger, so when your four-year-old is 14, you can still chase them and beat them.
Absolutely.
All these meals, by the way, the tortillas with the beans, all these are on the Total Choice Program.
See, my kids would love that.
They would like it, and that's the interesting thing.
We're not taking things from you.
We're giving you things that I know you'd like if you knew that they were existing.
Okay, finally, you have to redefine what cheating means.
Why is this essential for successful do-over?
So there are a lot of diets out that say you can have a cheat meal or a cheat day.
And what that does is it makes your brain go haywire.
Okay, I had red meat.
I had a big steak as my cheat meal, right?
And so you want it and want it and want it.
And that...
Corrupts your brain.
It's imprisoned your brain, in fact.
What you want to do is break out of the prison and put the stake in the prison if you want.
So if you're going to cheat, you want two ounces of that at most.
So redefining cheating is not gorging on something, it's having something simple.
And by the way, since sugar is the thing, these are some, if you will, some dark chocolate and raspberries.
And you can melt them and pour one on top of the other.
Nice.
Or a glass of wine that has some sweetness as a dessert.
So on the do-over plan, you get to, in fact, keep what you like, the taste you like, but in fact, make them healthy.
So we're not worrying about calories.
We're worrying about the quality of what you're doing.
The most important thing is when you cheat, get it over with.
Take a couple bites, get them out of your system, and then move on with life.
Absolutely.
Let me give you what I think is actually the most important tip of all.
We need partners in life.
Yes, we do.
We have to have them.
We need a buddy system for you.
So either find a friend or we've got actually on dros.com a buddy finding system, a buddy tracker system.
We will help you find somebody that will allow you to enjoy life with them.
We've got that and we've got the entire plan we talked about on dros.com.
I want you to take advantage of it.
Absolutely.
Show up in your own life and we'll be there for you.
Absolutely.
Dr. Barson's got a fantastic book out of it.
It's called This Is Your Do-Over.
He has everything you need.
He's going to share all the things, especially the seven essential deeds for a successful do-over.
Take advantage of it.
It's wonderfully done, as always.
We'll be right back.
I have to do this with my kids.
It's found in nearly every kitchen, and we all cook and store leftovers with it.
But did you know aluminum foil can be used to clean, scrub, and sharpen?

One of my favorite segments of all, new health uses for everyday things.
Now, while it's used to cook and store food, you guys have found some wonderful other great uses for aluminum foil.
Let's get to it.
Let's start with this one.
Aluminum foil to clean your pots and pans.
Nicole says she can get off built-up dirt and grime with aluminum foil.
Just with that, how are you?
Absolutely.
Hi, Dr. Oz.
Why would you then think of doing this?
Well, actually, it is an old family secret.
So on Sunday, my grandma would make this great big Italian dinner.
Then when I was a little girl, I'd go to the sink and help her clean all the pots and pans with that stuck-on sauce, and she would use aluminum foil.
Show them what your very wise grandmother would do.
So here's some grime there.
We can all see that.
I got it.
Okay, so what do you do exactly?
So it's really simple.
All you do is you take some tinfoil, you wad it up in a ball like this, and then you're going to take the pan, and you're simply going to get in there and scrub it really good.
Now, if it's stuck on, you can add a little vinegar and baking soda.
This is unbelievable.
Can you all see this thing?
See that?
And this is real stuff, the grinder is stuck on there.
That's real stuff.
I mean, it's stuck on there.
And it's even great for Dr. Oz if you want to have a cheat day and you're going to make brownies.
You know how it gets stuck on there.
You have all that all around the rim.
I know exactly what that's like, yes.
Perfect.
Just take it and scrub it.
And after you're done feeling guilty, you can work out and scrub the dish really hard.
You mentioned if this doesn't work by itself, you add vinegar to it.
You can add vinegar and baking soda.
And it makes a paste.
And actually, the pots come out spotless from the vinegar and baking soda as well.
Very, very happy with that.
Thank you very much.
You're welcome.
All right.
Thanks, Nicole.
Let's turn to another use for aluminum foil.
This one I never thought I would have the opportunity to share with you is that aluminum foil actually helps you easily move furniture.
Rhonda's here.
I'm surprised, Rhonda, that you would actually propose this.
Do you move a lot of furniture in your life?
I don't move a lot of furniture, but maybe twice a year when I get bored with the look of a room.
You know, just...
Rearrange the furniture.
In our house, my wife tells me to move the furniture when she gets bored, which is more than twice a year, by the way.
So tell me how this works.
It's so simple.
So all you do is you take your aluminum foil and you break them off into squares.
And then you want to fold them.
You want to make sure you have the shiny side and the inside.
Like this.
Oh, it's shiny on the inside.
Yes, because the dull side, it's more slippery than the shiny side.
The dull side will move the couches or any type of furniture as furniture sliders would.
All right, so we've got a little experiment.
This couch obviously has nothing underneath it.
Here we've taken your dull side down, aluminum foil, wrapped it up.
Are you ready to do an experiment with me?
Yes, I am.
Come on back here.
Okay.
So, well, you've got to help me first.
Okay, all right.
I'll do it by myself.
Okay.
A doctor.
Okay.
All right, ready?
Push.
That's not going very far.
That was hard.
That was actually pushing, by the way.
Okay.
Are you ready here?
I'm ready.
Go.
Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa.
It's simple.
I almost fell.
You know what?
Here, that's really easy.
Yeah, yeah.
Works just like furniture sliders.
That's unbelievable.
It's a very, very clever idea.
I love that.
Yes, yes.
Thank you very, very much.
You're welcome.
The next new use for aluminum foil...
Has to do with getting wrinkle-free clothes.
Now, Brenda has found a way to use aluminum foil to save you time while ironing.
Take a look.
Usually it takes me about 15 minutes to iron the shirt.
That's right, 15 minutes.
But today, I'm going to use aluminum foil underneath my ironing pad and it's only going to take me three minutes.
Cover the top of your ironing board with aluminum foil.
Be sure to keep your shiny side up.
Place ironing board pads over your ironing board.
Iron as usual.
Check this out. - Brenda, I love that.
I love when you say, check this out.
Absolutely, absolutely.
You're proud of it.
Three minutes versus 15 minutes.
Well, in my town, I'm known as the ironing board queen.
Oh, you are.
Oh, absolutely.
I love ironing everything, Dr. Oz.
Give me a pair of shorts.
I'll iron them for you.
Well, okay.
So, how'd you figure this out?
Well, a friend actually told me about it, and I love it because she knows how much I love to iron.
So, once again, we put the aluminum foil, this time you want the shiny side up or down?
Up.
Up.
Facing you, absolutely.
Because it reflects the heat better.
That's exactly.
Once you surge the iron and the steam goes through the pad, through the clothing, then it reflects back up.
Then you put this over the top?
Absolutely.
Then iron normally?
Yes.
I don't put it down.
Absolutely.
It's unbelievable.
Oh, it cuts your time in half.
Pretty cool, huh?
I like it.
Make more of those videos that like them.
Absolutely.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
All right.
One more.
One more to get to.
Let's do this.
It's a pretty cool way to sharpen your scissors with aluminum foil.
Baz is here.
Is it Baz or Boz?
Boz.
Boz.
Thank you for being here.
How you doing?
All right, Boz.
What do you got for us?
Okay, this is to sharpen scissors.
So I found a way to do it without, you know, finding a real tool.
So what you do is you fold it in half, and you take the scissors, and you cut it diagonally.
It's like crafts.
I get crafts at home.
And it does make it, you know, but if you wanted to do it again, you know, just to give it some layers.
Oh, just cutting?
Does it by itself?
Yes.
Yes.
And it'll make the scissors as good as new.
There's only one test to know if it works.
Does it cut your nails?
Okay.
It worked?
All right.
Nicely done, Beth.
Thank you.
All right.
With these and other everyday uses of everyday things, go to DrEyes.com.
We'll be right back.
Thank you.
All new Oz.
Your biggest health questions answered by Dr. Andrew Weil.
I have a lot of information to give that's very helpful.
Bring them on.
From battling joint pain to kicking a hangover.
Here are my two favorite remedies.
Nothing is off limits.
Plus, new cancer warnings about red meat.
This research is pretty provocative.
How you can still enjoy it without increasing your cancer risk.
All new Dr. Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
You won't believe this, but I'm actually doing this for my brain.
Because there's a brand new study that shows that each time you texture tap your fingers on your phone, like I'm doing right now, you may actually increase your brain activity.
That's what I call a smartphone.
That's the name, perhaps.
But the researchers also say that excessive phone use could lead to muscle and nerve problems.
So in that case, I'm going to put this away and save my two thumbs up for in case you missed it.
First off, I'm going to talk a little bit to my OzNation DIYers.
One way to declutter your house is to magnetize your medicine cabinet.
It's a big deal.
Things like tweezers and nail clippers.
Get one of these little magnetic strips.
They cost about six bucks at an office supply store.
They're cheaper, by the way, than losing even one of these little utensils that you're gonna save yourself with.
And you keep them in a vertical position.
It saves you a lot of space.
Next, we talked about aluminum foil to cook and store your food.
But did you know that you can also use that same aluminum foil to clean up after the meal?
You just wad it up like this.
And then once it's in a ball, you see a little stuff that's stuck in there.
Whatever the badness you've done to your pots and pans, this stuff works really quickly.
And it turns out for containers and pans, it's fantastic.
If you put a little vinegar in there as well, it's cheap and it's effective.
And these little balls will last forever.
Finally, be careful of dubious people online that make it seem like I'm endorsing their products, because I don't.
