Time Text
Today on Oz, cleanses promise you weight loss, glowing skin, and instant energy.
But which one works best for you?
The best cleanses for every health goal.
Plus, a real housewife with a real dilemma.
I decided to be public about this.
Real housewife of Atlanta, Candy Burris, and her husband, Todd, open up.
I started to bleed nonstop for like two months.
The new health crisis they're facing.
Coming up next on Dr. Oz.
Thank you, everybody.
All right, you hear about them all the time.
They promise you weight loss, glowing skin, and instant energy.
I'm talking about cleanses.
But how do you know which one really works best for you?
Well, today I'm giving you my list and ranking the best cleanses for every health goal.
So here are the criteria.
They can be backed by science, they have easy to do, and popular on social media.
So my top pick for weight loss, I found on Instagram.
It's the three-day cleanse.
Michelle is here.
Four pounds in three days!
You look good!
You got a little spin.
So, you ready for it?
I'm gonna spin it around.
How did this compare to all the other dyes that you tried?
It was encouraging because I was eating whole foods that I was blending myself as opposed to pre-packaged, chemical, packaged, pre-portioned stuff.
Let's go over the rules for this three-day cleanse.
And if you don't mind, walk me through how you...
Sure.
The rules were no solids, which is hard.
Three, you have to drink the healthy fats and unlimited liquid meals and then unlimited lemon water.
Lemon water.
Yes.
All right.
So give me a typical breakfast.
So for breakfast, I would take my blender and I'd put coconut milk.
I would put a scoop of protein powder.
I would do almond butter and vanilla.
You'd blend it up and you'd drink it and it'd be thick and rich and satisfying.
For lunch, I would do an avocado, a pear.
Lime, ginger, which made it so bright and fresh with coconut water.
It was good.
And then I'd have, dinner would be a pureed spinach, cilantro, and carrots.
And then I'd put in a vegetable broth.
And then for a snack, I'd have cucumber, lemon, apple, celery, and spinach.
Green juice.
First of all, I love what you're doing here.
I'm going to put the recipes on DrRoz.com so you're not confused about this.
You can make them the right way.
But here's what I like a lot.
First off, a lot of fiber.
Very smart.
So it's not solid, but it's got fiber.
You're satisfied.
You're satisfied.
And stuff keeps moving through you.
You know what I mean?
Did it keep moving through you?
Yes.
Yes, okay.
You got healthy fats, which you included in all of these, and I like this protein.
Yeah, and I wasn't hungry.
My kryptonite is my kids' leftovers, and I wasn't hungry.
I was satisfied.
Was that surprising to you, that without eating anything solid?
Yeah.
I like food.
I like to eat steaks, and so this was better.
So what's the first thing that you ate after you came off the cleanse?
I thought I was going to go face first into chocolate cake.
Face first?
I didn't.
I had, yeah, like that.
All over.
But I had like a sensual breakfast.
I had an egg for breakfast.
I had lean protein, fruit, and lots of water.
And the water is delicious.
And with the lemon, it's refreshing.
You want to keep drinking it.
I'm very proud of you.
Thank you so much.
Everything you said resonates with me because it's exactly how I feel still.
All right.
My next topic is the skin detox cleanse for glowing skin.
Brandeis posted this video on Facebook after trying the skin detox cleanse for just five days.
I used to have dry skin and a couple pimples would crop up on my chin, so I'd walk around and hide my face like this.
And I'd use a little concealer to kind of blend everything in wherever I could.
But after finding the Skin Detox Cleanse, I no longer have to.
And I can walk around confidently and no longer have to hide my face.
This drink right here has changed the way that I face the world forever.
And here she is now.
So how do you discover the cleanse?
I found it on Pinterest.
You did.
I was in deep need of one, so I went looking on the internet and I found this one.
Yeah.
Here we are.
Here it is.
Let's go over the rules for the clear skin cleanse.
Take it away.
Now, for the rules, you don't do any dairy, any carbs, and you swap out one meal a day for this juice.
And at first, that was really hard for me, Doc, to do no carbs and no dairy.
All right.
So, specifically?
Okay.
You take one bell pepper, three carrots, squeeze in half a lemon, medium cucumber, an apple, and two cups of water.
Very easy.
And which meal did you swap out?
I swapped out.
I entertained them.
I did breakfast one day, lunch, dinner, a different one.
But ultimately, I liked doing breakfast.
And were you hungry at all through the program?
You weren't.
Because, you know, it's a healthy choice.
And doing it at breakfast helped me set the tone for the rest of my day.
And it was very satisfying.
And you posted that video after five days.
But how many days did it take for you to really see the benefit?
About two to three.
And you immediately started seeing a difference.
Yeah.
So I brought someone in to actually ask about this because I'm curious.
We've got leading dermatologist, Dr. Diane Burson.
She's joining us.
And I'm going to ask her, what does she think about this claim?
Does it really work, do you think?
You know it certainly can help make the skin look better.
This cleanse contains very healthy fruits and vegetables that are loaded with antioxidants such as vitamin C and E and beta carotene and we know that antioxidants can counteract oxidative damage and free radical stress and this all contributes to the development of inflammation.
And inflammation certainly is involved in the development of acne, rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, even premature aging of the skin.
So having this cleanse in addition, of course, to good skin care, sun protection, whatever your dermatologist recommends, I think is going to translate into better looking skin and healthier looking skin.
Are you still taking this?
How often do you do it?
I do it about once a month now.
And, you know, if I see a little area crop up on my skin that I want to take care of, I go ahead and start the cleanse.
Get a good look there, Doc.
Yes, perfect.
Thanks to you, Doc.
Thank you.
Finally, my top pick for instant energy, it's the Whole Food Energy Boost Cleanse.
Take a look at Karen's Vine video.
Don't eat this anymore.
Ready to start my day.
It's okay, right?
Nicely done, by the way, in only 10 seconds.
So why'd you want to do this cleanse?
Well, I'm a busy mom.
My morning is crazy.
I don't even have time to eat breakfast sometimes, or I grab a bagel, and I know that's not good.
I saw the bagel in the video.
Let's go over the rule for this wonderful whole food energy cleanse.
Give us the lowdown.
What makes this work?
Okay, you have to do it for breakfast.
That's key.
And what you want to do is, for 10 days, you can't have carbs, and no caffeine.
And that was really...
No caffeine or carbs.
Right.
It's hard, but I'm happy now.
All right, so I asked a good friend of mine, the director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, Dr. Mark Hyman.
He created the Whole Food Energy Boucher.
Here's what he had to say.
Hey, Dr. Oz.
I'm so glad the Whole Food Energy Boost Cleanse has gone viral and it's no surprise.
Who needs caffeine when you can power up your brain and your body with powerful super foods like blueberries, coconut butter, nuts and seeds, amazing stuff with incredible ingredients that power up your brain, power up your energy, keep your metabolism going all day long.
So try to give up your coffee for 10 days.
You'll see just how good you can feel using this amazing energy boost shape.
How do you make it?
Okay, what you do is you get cranberries, blueberries, you have your walnuts and your pumpkin seeds.
You can even snack a little while you're making it.
There's chia seeds, almond butter, coconut butter, unsweetened almond milk, and...
You blend it up and go?
You blend it up and go.
And how do they compare, seriously, to this morning coffee issue?
Because this is a big challenge I always get when I have folks try something alternative.
Well, you're reprogramming yourself.
It was hard to ditch the coffee, I'm not going to lie, I'm a Java girl.
But once you feel better, you don't want that anymore.
So I'm going to examine the front row of our audience.
You all have this.
Please give it a shot.
Give it a taste.
I want to know what you actually think about this.
And here's the big question.
I want to know about the taste and whether you consider replacing your coffee habit with it.
Any thoughts?
You would?
Definitely.
And for all my folks in college, this is way better.
So stop going to Starbucks.
Just make this.
Thank you very much.
You agree?
Yeah, it's very good.
We got a unanimous decision.
Thank you very much.
Listen, if you don't have three days or more for a cleanse, I got you.
When we come back, I have the answer.
Thank you.
How do you make sure that you stay regular?
As I get older, I find that if I don't eat a healthy diet, it disturbs my cycle.
I also eat prunes daily.
I may sound like an old man, but it does the trick.
Share your story on Dr. Oz's Facebook page.
Coming up next, too busy to commit to a cleanse but your body is in need of a reboot?
Get back on the wellness track and cleanse your body in just one day.
A simple plan with foods to rid toxins, fill you up, and keep you energized all day long.
Oz is outraged.
We expose bogus supplements using his name to rip you off.
We sent their products to a top lab to be tested.
The results are in.
What did you find?
That's coming up tomorrow on Dr. Oz.
We just talked about the best cleanses for your every health goal, but if you have only time for one day for your cleanse, then this is for you.
Nutritionist Kimberly Snyder is here to show us how it is done.
How can you actually cleanse in one day?
Good to see you.
Well, most of us are really busy.
We don't want to be starving and miserable for a few days.
But in one day, you can actually choose foods that are going to fill you up, you have energy, and they're going to be packed with nutrients to support your body's natural detoxification processes.
So one day actually is enough.
And we're all busy.
One day sounds a lot more doable than five days or three days sometimes, right?
The biggest complaint I get is I don't have time to do the cleanse, although I know in my mind it makes sense.
So I brought four skeptics in.
Okay.
Women will say, they're not interested in putting more time into this, but for one day, they'll give us a break.
One day.
Shuli, Stephanie, Gail, and Andrea here.
They say, 24 hours.
Too busy to stick to a cleanse, but they'll give us a shot.
Let's see if the one-day cleanse works for them.
You're going to taste all the stuff for us, right?
I want honest, I know you're giving me honest opinions.
They always do.
All right, step one, you want us to drink hot lemon water.
Listen, this is part of the Total 10 Rapid Weight Loss Plan.
You guys are giving us a ton of positive feedback.
But do you think it's also a good way to start this one-day cleanse?
Yes.
Most of us reach for coffee first thing, which can be very dehydrating.
For cleansing, you want to be fully hydrated.
So this is a great way to give your body a boost to start with hydration in the morning.
Get your intestines moving.
Okay.
Exactly.
Next thing we're going to do is to make a meal with the glowing green smoothie.
I have my own little smoothie too.
Yes.
Yours is a little thicker than mine.
Why is it so important?
So this is important.
As you can see, it's really heavy.
It's not a juice.
It's a smoothie.
It's packed with nutrients.
But this is going to fill you up.
All that fiber.
But try it.
It's actually really delicious.
It's only 70% green.
There's fruit in it and lemon to cut through the taste.
It's going to give you a ton of energy.
And all that fiber is going to keep you going.
It's going to help to ward off cravings, which is really important when you're cleansing.
It's like someone shoot it for me.
You want to chew a little bit.
It's thick, but it's so energizing.
This is really, you're going to stick with the cleanse because of this.
First thing in the morning.
This is like oatmeal versus a green drink.
All right, Shirley, what do you think about the taste?
Wonderful.
It's great.
Stephanie likes it?
Love it.
I can taste the fruits in it, the vegetables.
It's sweet.
Andrea gave me a little something like this, not too happy about that.
Very light.
It's nice and thick, so it makes you feel like you would be full.
Alright, so we got three pluses and one...
we'll see.
Next, mid-morning boost, and this is important because you say if we sip detox tea, it'll get us past that craving we'll often have.
Yes, past the mid-morning, this is nice, hot, it's satisfying.
It's a mix of ginger, cayenne pepper, and lemon, which is going to help break up the toxins in your body.
Ginger is anti-inflammatory, and it's just going to give you that nice warm feeling to get to the next meal.
Again, cayenne pepper helps cleanse the body.
So Gail, how would you describe it?
Does it give you a little zing that you want?
It has a very big zing.
I think the cayenne pepper in it would really get you energized and moving.
How about that spoiled Andrea?
Does she think so, too?
No, I do.
I like that one better.
It's more flavorful, and I definitely felt that, too.
It's warming, too.
It's a booster metabolism.
I really enjoy that with the lemon.
All right, so the skepticism of Stephanie is a little bit better on this.
And I didn't know about adding the cayenne pepper, which is even better.
I love the spice.
Love it.
Fuel your digestive system.
We're starting to warm them up towards you.
Okay, okay.
We're getting to lunch.
This is a surprising tip.
I always thought you wouldn't let us have anything solid, but you actually want us to have a crunchy lunch.
Yes, this is so exciting.
We actually get to eat during the class.
So this is sort of like having chips and dip.
The crunchy veggies give you something to crunch down on, like you're having a potato chip, but without the carbs, without the saturated fat.
And you're going to dip it in my, this is what I call my raw beauty ranch dressing, which you guys try.
Unlike ranch, this is actually promoting cleansing.
There's coconut yogurt in it, which is packed with probiotics, and also raw apple cider vinegar, which helps to stabilize your blood sugar.
Cilantro, which binds to heavy metals and helps to escort them out of the body.
Look, they're nodding their heads.
They like the dressing!
They like the dressing?
It's like the perfect lunch while we cleanse.
Refreshing, and then it's great that you can eat.
Yes, yes!
So what if those whiners over here, what if they get hungry and it's not lunchtime?
What do they put in their bodies?
So then we can go back to our best friend, the glowing green smoothie.
You can make a big enough batch to sip on in the afternoon.
It's going to keep your energy up.
Look at Andrea frowning.
I'm just worried about how long it takes to make.
Oh, you know, it's actually very easy if you have a blender, just water, throw in the green veggies, and then some fruit.
You'll probably make it in just a few minutes in a big enough batch to last the whole day.
Just drink water.
Alright, finally, dinner.
You want us to actually fill up on a very warming, comforting dinner.
Yes.
You've made it this far.
You want to keep cleansing.
What's great is this is going to feel like you're having a hot dinner.
This is an oil-free soup.
It's going to feel really soothing and hot.
Some steamed veggies with my radiance dip, which is made with lemon zest.
These dips are so good.
So good, right?
They're so good.
And they're promoting cleansing all the ingredients.
So there's no heavy fat.
There's nothing dense.
You're still cleansing, but you're going to feel full, energized, and just, you know, through dinner, through the end of the day.
So how often should you do one of these one-day cleanses?
So, I recommend doing it seasonally, about four times a year.
It's always good to give your lymphatic system and your digestive system a boost, or any time you feel like getting back on track.
It's easy, it's doable.
Folks, for one day.
Yes!
I say that, but let me hear from the next.
Let's go down the path here, surely.
What's the verdict?
Has your perception changed?
Well, I am a coffee girl, but I think I can handle one day, as you said.
Gail, Andrea?
I agree.
I drink a lot of tea in the morning, and I think this would be...
Very easy and great to do for a day.
Everything's delicious.
For the challenge, I love the smoothie.
And, you know, it's easy to make.
It's thick.
Makes me feel full while I cleanse.
So I'm willing to try it.
And for one day, a little skeptical because, you know, it's a day.
However, I'll do it.
The most difficult skeptic of them all.
Well, I'm a first grade teacher, so I need a lot of energy throughout the day.
And I think it would be good to kind of recharge every so often.
So I like the idea of doing it, you know, not all the time, but...
One day.
Yeah, and just for one day.
And you're eating.
You have all the fiber throughout the day.
Exactly.
Wonderful plan.
Thank you very much.
Kimberly's new book, which is already a New York Times bestseller, is The Beauty Detox Power.
It's in stores now.
Check it out.
You can find the full one-day cleanse on my website, DrRoz.com.
I'll be right back.
- Woo! - Woo! - Woo! - Woo! - Very nice job, bro. - Thank you, Jeff.
- Congratulations, I love you, my buddy. - Next, "Housewives of Atlanta" stars Kandi Burris and Todd Tucker.
Less than a year into their union, the celebrity couple find themselves mired in marital struggles.
And now it's weighing on their health.
What you can do to turn up the heat and save your marriage.
Coming up next.
This is Deepak Chopra congratulating you on your 1,000th episode.
You're the best.
The only place where I can find entertainment, education, enlightenment, and well-being.
Thank you.
It was the reality TV wedding scene round the world when Real Housewives of Atlanta star and Grammy Award winning songwriter Candy Burris married producer Todd Tucker last spring.
But after a year of having their marriage struggles played out on television for the world to see, Candy and Todd are facing a new and very different battle, this time involving Candy's health.
They're here today to reveal personal details of their latest struggle for the first time.
Please welcome Candy Burris and Todd Tucker.
This is the longest walk in television.
I know, right?
Thank you very much.
It's good to be escorted.
Come on over, have a seat.
You know, I saw in that little package that it wasn't all easy for the first year.
Oh, no.
The first year was a great adjustment period.
Do you ever regret having that all play out on television?
Well, sometimes, you know, I feel like, you know, watching back, especially this last season, that we could have kept some things to ourselves.
Yeah, we were a little too open at times.
I think it was good we let it play out.
You know, I think...
I meet people in the street and they say they learned so much and I helped them get through things or how Candy dealt with certain things.
It just helped them get by.
So I feel like it's a positive.
Todd, how do you think Candy's changed the most over the first year of your marriage?
She's a little more sensitive.
Am I? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I think you were like real tough and rough and I think it kind of calmed and relaxed her and made her a little softer.
I like that.
Very romantic.
How do you think Todd's changed the most?
Um, I feel like he's pretty much the same, you know.
I think, I don't know, for a second he was having like a little attitude and we were having some issues bumping heads a little bit right after the marriage because we went from being together every day to a long-distance relationship because his job took him to California for some months.
Yeah.
And, you know, so we were kind of bumping heads in that period of time, but after that we were good.
Speaking of bumping heads, your mom Yeah.
Who I get to watch a fair amount.
She can be tough on Todd.
With this pregnancy issue coming up, does that change at all?
What does she say?
Well, she's gotten a lot better.
She has.
Yeah, she definitely has gotten a lot better.
Does Todd think that?
Wait a minute.
He's making faces.
No, no, no.
She has.
She has.
We're definitely working on it.
I think if the baby thing happens, it'll kind of bring everybody together.
For sure.
Babies do amazing things.
They do a lot of wonderful things, but to make them, you've got to be together.
You're traveling all the time.
That has to affect the opportunities.
Well, yes, but we came up with our own thing.
Basically, we will not go more than two weeks without being together.
It's mandatory.
One of us has to figure out how to get to the other within the two weeks.
So I've got some quotes here from the show.
This is you, Candy.
I laugh to keep from crying.
Okay.
You said he's out of town.
We have sex once a week.
I'm just quoting you.
Yeah, that was last year.
The last one, which is what I want to ask you about, it seems like somebody's cheating.
Well, I was thinking that that could have possibly been the thing, but that's because, you know, we hadn't been a long-distance relationship, and that was, like, new to me, because I don't like long-distance relationships, first of all.
So, it was an adjustment, because to me, in my mind, I felt like, okay, well, as soon as we get together, it needs to be on and popping.
Right.
You know, every day.
Right.
You know, and, you know, I understand, you know, we both work so much that sometimes we're tired at the end of the day.
Sure.
You know, but, I don't know.
Yeah, because I think people missed the episode when I was like, come on and give me some, and we made it, you know, a tally that, you know, you denied me.
Yeah.
Well, at that time, I had denied you.
This is how it all plays.
So, we've established that you have to be together to make a baby.
Yes.
But even with that, I saw a little clip with you with the infertility specialist.
Yes.
Serious stuff.
If I can ask, and thank you for talking about it with everybody, what is the main issue that you think is holding you back from having a baby?
Well, I've had issues with fibroids for a long time, and I've had multiple surgeries to remove them, but recently I was told I had some scar tissue from, I guess, my last surgery, and they're thinking that that's possibly the reason why we didn't get pregnant.
And Todd, you know, a guy wants to be there.
He wants to make a difference.
He wants to fix it.
Yeah.
What's it like not being able to just go fix this and make a baby?
It's tough.
It's frustrating.
Because I know it has to play on her emotionally.
You know, just what's wrong with me?
Why can't I get pregnant?
How do we fix it?
So it's tough.
How are you coping with it emotionally?
I'm fine.
You know, I'm more of a solutions person.
I don't want to focus on the problem too much.
I'm trying to figure out the solution, like, well, how do we fix this?
And so we've been meeting with, you know, fertility specialists and, you know, we went back and had another surgery to remove the scar tissue.
So we're in the next phase of trying to get pregnant now.
Why did you decide to be public about this?
This is a very personal issue.
That is true, but Todd and I, well I am definitely an open book.
It's pretty much what you see is what you get with me and I don't have a lot of secrets.
Mainly because I feel like I never want to have things that people can throw in my face or bring up and feel like they blasted me.
So I feel like if I just say whatever and I'm comfortable with it, there's nothing you can say to me that, you know, will bring me down.
Todd, did you think of doing this privately?
It's so crazy, before joining the show, I was like, I would never.
But it's like, it's a part of my life now, so it's kind of like, and I think a lot of When people watch us, they know it's our real story.
And I think a lot of people learn a lot and get a lot from it.
One in five women have fibroids in their childbearing years.
What you're sharing with them is a big opportunity for a lot of folks.
Dr. Jessica Shepard is joining us.
She's an OBGYN that I trust.
I've known her for a while.
She's here today with advice for anybody out there struggling with infertility issues.
She's sitting right over there.
When we come back, we'll be talking to her and you.
Stay with us.

Oz is outraged.
We expose bogus supplements using his name to rip you off.
We sent their products to a top lab to be tested.
The results are in.
What did you find?
That's coming up tomorrow on Dr. Oz.
We're back with Real Housewives of Atlanta stars, Candy Burris and her husband Todd Tucker speaking up for the first time about their infertility issues.
OBGYN Dr. Jessica Shepherd is also here with advice for them and any woman who's been told getting pregnant will be difficult due to fibroids.
So Todd, what would it mean for you if you guys could actually conceive a child?
That would be amazing.
That would be great, you know.
Yes.
I wish we could have did it ourselves naturally, but you know.
Sure.
If I get a boy, I'm good.
Wait a minute, why does it only have to be a boy?
I love my girl.
Any flavor is fine.
So, Dr. Sheppard, you see a lot of families with fertility struggles.
Give us some advice.
What should Candy and Tabby be thinking about?
I think the perfect part about this is that you guys are united.
You guys have a plan and you're ready to go through with it.
I think the advice is that you guys really need that emotional connection because one, the good thing about this is that you both have children on your own.
So that is the good part.
It's a blended family.
That means you've done this before.
Yes.
So you've done this before and that means that it can be done again.
So before you guys were talking about some of the things that you've gone through surgically, With your OBGYN and some of the fibroid issues and just, you know, to make sure that you and every other woman in America knows that fibroids are actually very common.
So 50% of women by the age of 50 will have fibroids and African-American women, so we will have more fibroids than other women.
70% of them have fibroids.
So this is something that is not uncommon.
So you're not going through something on your own.
This is not abnormal.
But I think with the history that we've discussed before, you've had fibroids removed several times, isn't that correct?
Yes.
The first time I ever knew that I had fibroids was when I was pregnant with my daughter.
But after I had her, it shrunk back down, and so they said it would be fine.
But later on, I started having a lot of issues to where I was bleeding heavily, and it was just, you know, to the extreme.
And so the first surgery I had, it was the outpatient thing where they just went in through Yes, so that is the, there's several ways to remove fibroids and you can either remove them from below or from the abdomen.
And so the first one that you had was from below.
Yes.
And they did a little outpatient surgery where they did that.
Right, but then I had more problems because I guess they didn't get all of the fibroid and I started to bleed non-stop for like two months straight.
And didn't you have some episodes?
And I passed out on a plane.
Yeah.
And I was by myself, I was alone, so that was the, I was really afraid.
And so I went to a different doctor And I had to have the myomectomy.
And my blood was so low, I had to get a blood transfusion.
So that was like extremely scary.
And, you know, from there, she told me that I needed to try to have children within five years or they could come back.
But Todd wasn't around yet.
Yeah, I didn't know Todd.
Yeah, so Todd, you weren't there.
Todd's fault.
It's always Todd's fault.
I didn't know you then.
So I wasn't ready.
They did come back.
How do women know if the fibroid is actually a problem?
Because many women have fibroids.
The first time around you had fibroids.
And that is such a key question because, again, so many women have fibroids, but like you had this bleeding problem, that's when we notice that it becomes a problem.
Gynecologists usually like to say, if the fibroids are not causing you any issues, we generally leave them alone.
But when you had the bleeding problem and you went to your gynecologist and saw them on the ultrasound, That's when it was the perfect time to do something.
So show us an ultrasound that might be concerning to us, that might actually lead to infertility.
And I'm going to show you, and I think this one is really important, especially in your case, because when we talk about the uterus, as you'll see here, so this is a typical ultrasound and this is what we see.
So you're going to see that the uterus is this nice big outer circle where it has a little bit of light specks in it.
So in the cavity, and this is where you have your implantation, this is where babies grow, If you have a fibroid inside, if you can imagine, like a balloon with a ball in there, there's not much space.
So it's occupying the space in which you want to have that fertilized egg grow and the baby has a nice environment to grow.
So if you have a fibroid there, it kind of constricts that area.
Notice Dr. Shepherd, by the way, purposely picked an OB-GYN who's pregnant, who knows how to talk about this.
She visually reinforces it.
Right.
Well, just like you explained about the fibroid being inside the cavity of the uterus, that's what happened to me recently.
Last year or the year before, the fibroids came back and it was within the cavity.
And so I had to have another procedure to have it removed.
But apparently, I must have some scar tissue from that last procedure.
And so when I went to the specialist, they told me they needed to remove that scar tissue because that can...
Cause you to not get pregnant or the egg not to implant or something.
So explain to us if you don't mind.
Yeah, absolutely.
Specifically, if they're going to use in vitro, whether they take away these sticky adhesions or not, how do they actually do that?
So when she went to her doctor, they did a hysteroscopy.
And that's when we insert a camera and we look inside that cavity and make sure that it's clean.
The fibroid was in there initially and you had it removed.
But with every surgery that you have, you increase that risk of having adhesions.
And so that was the reason that they did that.
Right.
I actually brought you guys a little present since you've been so open with all of America.
I'm going to show you exactly what we're talking about.
I'm not going to show you about this.
This one's fun.
So I brought you some uteruses.
Is it a real uterus?
Yes, they are.
What?
Come on over here.
Don't be strangers.
A real uterus?
We're going to quiz you on it, too.
So we're going to start off with a normal uterus.
Todd's sweating already.
I feel like I'm back in school.
Oh, that's it?
Yeah.
Well, there's a couple of things here that are interesting.
Why don't you go ahead and do that one?
Yeah, so this is a typical normal uterus.
So you see it's a little bit open here, and that's because of the dissection.
It looks like a chitlin.
Does it?
Why do people get hungry around the organs all the time?
But this is actually typical.
These are ovaries right here.
And these are your fallopian tubes.
So if we were to open this, we actually can show you in the next specimen here exactly what it would look like if you have a fibroid in this cavity.
And that's where babies grow inside.
So let's go over this now.
Yes.
So this is a uterus that has a fibroid in it.
And think about these as gardens.
You've got to plant a seed in there, the baby.
So if there's something out that's messing with that, like you just saw in that little image we showed, or in this case, you'll actually see the fibroid here.
See how small that is?
That little area there?
Oh, okay.
But they can be a little bit larger.
It can be this size.
That's a fibroid, too.
So if you can imagine that in your cavity, there's really no space for a baby to grow.
So this can do two things.
It can suck up all the nutrients so that if the baby's trying to get in there and set up shop and eat, it can't inside the cavity.
Or it can block the baby from getting there, which is why dealing with these fibroids is such an issue if you're trying to conceive.
So with you, the game plan is this has been taken out.
Take away any scar that's in there and then do it in vitro.
To take things that are required to make a fertile egg and put them inside of you.
That's a big deal.
Yep.
But the good thing is you've had that done.
So now it's on to the next part of that.
And there are also other issues with that as well, too.
Uh-oh, what's the issue?
We'll talk about it.
I'll give you the big summary statement from my perspective.
One of the biggest things that holds us back from having babies is stress.
When we feel stress in our lives and our relationships, it does subtle things.
Some of them we don't even understand.
But that needs to be addressed.
And I'd just love to give you a chance to process that.
How do you take the stress level down in your lives right now so this becomes your priority?
Well, how do we take the stress level down?
I mean, we just try to, you know, I don't know.
I mean, I can't say that we take all the stress out of our lives.
Because, you know, it's constantly, we're constantly like, go, go, go, and always trying to, you know, come up with new stuff to do and making things happen.
And being on television, period.
You have so many eyes on you, and so that's stressful.
But, um...
What about you, Todd?
I don't know.
I love to work, so I don't know.
I just find another activity to keep me busy.
This is a serious question that you guys are going to have to process.
I'm not telling you to get rid of the stress in your life.
We need stress to live our lives.
It's the processing of it that I don't think is in your best interest right now.
Okay.
You're going to figure that out together.
You're a couple.
You're in this together.
But for all this magic to happen, all those subtle little hormone things to happen to the best chance possible, this has to happen too.
Well, this is happening.
This is happening.
God bless them.
This is happening.

We'll be right back.
Next, they're flooding the market.
Specialty bottled waters promising health and wellness.
All natural benefits chock full of vitamins and minerals.
But are these plant-based super elixirs everything they claim to be?
Are they healthy or just hype?
Coming up.
A daytime television event.
Emmy award-winning Dr. Oz celebrates his 1,000th show with Hugh Jackman.
Thursday, May 7th.
That's coming up next week.
It's H2O overload from aloe to maple, even artichoke.
Shoppers are drowning in a tidal wave of new waters tapped from plants.
But, should you be drinking the new super waters?
Today, when it comes to your health, are they hot or not?
Ten years ago, coconut water made its first big splash.
And now the floodgates have opened to a whole new world of plant-based superwaters.
Maple, Birch, Aloe, Cactus, Ginger, Artichoke.
It tastes good, but it keeps you hydrated.
Celebs are endorsing, and consumers are buying.
They spent over 400 million dollars on earth enhanced waters just last year.
So why the sudden thirst?
Maybe because some brands promise unique health benefits like super hydration, pumped up nutrition, better digestion, even help with weight loss.
But at two to six dollars a bottle, the new it beverages don't come cheap.
Today, trendy super waters.
Should you be drinking them or not?
These ladies at my water bar are all drinking the new Superwaters, and nutritionist Sharon Richter is here to reveal which are hot and which are not.
Let's start with aloe water.
Jennifer is drinking a glass of aloe water.
Can you describe it for us?
Yes, it's very refreshing.
It has a neutral taste, and it has a tropical taste to it.
Tropical taste.
Oh, very nice.
Open.
So, why would it be that aloe water might be healthy for us?
Alright, so they're claiming that aloe water helps with digestion.
If you have irritable bowel syndrome, if you're pregnant, you have some constipation, then it might help with that.
Alright.
Jennifer, you've been taking it for a while.
Have you noticed any differences in specifically constipation?
It hasn't affected me in that way.
Hasn't benefited you?
Not in that way.
Well, what way has it benefited you?
Very hydrating.
Very hydrating, okay.
You might have gotten the opposite.
All right, Sharon, is aloe water hot or not?
Nope, it's not.
There haven't been any long-term studies that show if it helps with digestion or irritable bowel or anything like that.
I would say stick with the prunes.
The prunes.
Prunes.
We can make prune water, we don't have that yet.
Next time.
Next up, we've got birch water and Karen's helping us with this.
Can you describe it for us, Karen?
Yeah, I was actually quite surprised.
It was a lot more of a mellow flavor than I expected, but also stronger than I expected, so it was quite enjoyable as opposed to just drinking plain water.
Sort of fruity also.
Doesn't it taste like you're chewing on bark?
No, it did not.
Luckily, no.
So, Sharon, what's the claim here?
Why would Burst be good for us?
So, they think it's good for weight loss and also good for dental health because it has xylitol in it, which is a natural, uncaloric sweetener.
The question is, does it work or not?
Are you ready?
Hot or not?
Nope, not at all.
So, xylitol you have to be really careful of.
If you have too much of it, you're going to have some GI problems, some bloating, you could have diarrhea.
Don't think we want that.
No, you don't want that.
Have you got that yet?
No, no.
Days early.
Alright, let's get to another water.
Artichoke water.
Julie is drinking this.
Right in front of us.
You like the odor?
It's got a nice smell.
Nice aroma.
Delicious.
Sweet.
On the sweet side.
So a scale of 1 to 10 since you're a connoisseur.
Where would you place it?
10 being the best.
It's kind of 4 or 5. Just right.
Not too sweet.
Just refreshing, light, delicious.
So for you 10 is too sweet?
Way too sweet.
I like nothing sweetened.
So this is like a little more than I would like, but it's really delicious.
I love it.
But then please do it if you can.
What's the argument around artichoke?
So artichokes, like eating an artichoke is high in folate, has antioxidants in it.
It even might help with some detoxification like for the liver.
I'm still lost.
Usually 1 to 10 is really good.
And 4 is a little bit more than you want.
So what's good on my 1 to 10 scale?
It's like a 5. Not too sweet, just right.
It's actually just right.
On a scale of 1 to 5, where would it be?
Oh, well, then it's a little less than five.
This is very confusing.
Very confusing.
All right, Sharon, forget about that.
It's good enough, we say that.
Artichoke water, hot or not?
We're going to put it on the five plus.
It's hot.
We like it.
We like that it has the antioxidants.
It doesn't have too many calories.
It doesn't have a lot of sugar in it.
It's like eating an artichoke, but definitely a lot easier.
All right, so we got one that's positive.
Maple water is our last sampling for today.
Mia's going to do that.
Let's see what she thinks about it.
Interesting.
I would normally ask on a scale of 1 to 10, but I've given that up today.
I would say...
Just tell me in words.
Maybe my palate isn't the right palate for it, but I think it's not the taste I would prefer.
It's more like a...
I would think woodsy or like the leaf.
I could say I would taste the leaf.
It tastes like eating a tree with the leaves.
Yeah, not...
Yeah, I feel like an elephant drinking that, I guess.
Oh my goodness, yes.
That's a good description.
Good description.
Maple water, what's the claim?
So it's not like maple syrup that you're putting on your pancakes.
It actually has some vitamins and minerals in it, like zinc and magnesium.
That's a pretty good description.
The bark with the leaves, yeah.
See, you and I. Let me ask you a minute, but here's the argument.
Do you get your five servings of vegetables every day?
No, Dr. Oz and my mom, I work, five servings.
So would you be willing to drink this bark and leaf concoction if it gave you your five servings?
I would probably say no.
Then I would make more time to get my fruits and vegetables in.
Well, let's see if it might help somebody.
Maple water, hot or not?
So it's hot.
It's hot because it does have vitamins and minerals that your fruits and vegetables have.
So if you're someone who really can't get them in, maybe you want to blend it with something so it has a better flavor for you.
A little lemon?
Yes.
They're a challenging group, aren't they?
They are.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
I want to thank you and all the women in my water bar.
We'll be right back.
What's your favorite natural remedy for bloat?
I always like to eat potassium-rich foods whenever I'm dealing with bloat.
Whenever I feel it coming on, I make sure to load up on bananas, mangoes, and spinach.
Always helps.
Share yours on Facebook.com slash Dr. Oz.
Oz is outraged.
Last year, he tracked down scammers using his name to sell you bogus supplements.
You've used my name without my permission.
Now, after a year-long investigation, we go undercover to expose online scams, ripping you off.
We sent their products to a top lab to be tested.
And the results are in.
What did you find?
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
It can be a drag eating boring salads all the time, This artistic salad maker brought some serious creativity to the table.
Look at this, making a salad look just like a famous painting.
Compare those two.
One of them is actually food.
So I thought I'd try to make my own salad painting today, and I thought since I'm a heart surgeon, I could use a little bit of heart creativity.
Tell me if it looks like a heart.
I don't have enough red, so I'll make some orange here.
What do you think?
And then, of course, Oz, a little dressing there.
And then sprinkle some of this stuff in there as well.
All right.
Anyway, remember, kids, playing with your food is not allowed.
Don't copy this at home, and certainly don't blame me if you do.
Next, it's time for in case you missed it.
Superwaters are all the rage these days, and they're going to come in all kinds of wacky flavors.
They have them in aloe, they have maple, even artichoke.
But when are they good for you?
When are they hot, and when are they not?
Well, we looked into them, and aloe and birch water, well, not so hot.
Artichoke water, on the other hand, that's really hot.
It's low in sugar, packed with vitamins.
It's also much easier to eat than a whole artichoke.
It's good for all those busy folks out on the go who want to stay hydrated.
We also spoke to a real housewife from Atlanta, Candy Burris, and her husband, Todd Tucker, that Candy's struggling with infertility due to something called uterine fibroids.
She's not alone.
By age 50, 50% of all women have fibroids like these.
You'll notice, that's what the uterus normally looks like.
It's fairly spongy.
It's not that big.
A fibroid can be tiny, like a marble.
It can be this size.
You can get a lot larger, too, and they're very hard.
They actually are able to become challenges for folks to deal with because when they're inside the uterus like this, they take up a lot of space.
So the symptoms can be pressure from the fibroid.
It can be bleeding, pain, frequent urination, constipation.
So if you're concerned you have fibroids, and a lot of you do have fibroids, please see a doc.
We can do things to help you with it.
Finally, please be careful of dubious people online that make it seem like I'm endorsing their products because they don't.
