What happens when you almost die?
I entered this realm that was filled with light.
Shocking stories of near-death experiences.
With a gasp of air, I woke up in my unconscious body.
And a medium who can see sickness.
You're gonna be okay.
Was that helpful?
That's a message.
Yes, it's very helpful.
Plus, marry the medicine star Jackie Walters.
I want to empower women to protect that vital part of their body.
On everything you need to know about Down There.
coming up next.
Season 11 starts now.
What happens when you almost die and then come back to life?
One woman says her brushes with death and a diagnosis of an incurable disease opened her eyes to an ability to connect and communicate with the other side every day.
And this doctor says she nearly died five times.
And now has a newfound ability to sense signs from beyond the physical world.
Today we investigate the shocking visions and after effects of near-death experiences.
What does science say about how you change physically and spiritually when you die?
Dr. Yvonne Kaysen says she has nearly died five times.
I was in a plane crash and I was almost killed.
It was 1979 and as the plane was crashing down towards a lake, Yvonne says something extraordinary happened.
This feeling of peace and calm started descending over me and the voice in my mind said, swim to shore.
And suddenly, I was maybe 20 or 30 feet above my body and I was in a place that was filled with light.
It was like being at the top of the clouds.
Shockingly, Yvonne says this was not her first near-death experience.
As a youth, she was in a serious car accident.
I was about 10 or 11 and I had a head injury and I lost consciousness.
I was evidently unconscious for two or three days.
And Niagara Falls is where Yvonne underwent her most recent near-death experience.
After meditating, she slipped and fell.
I hit my hip and had a serious brain injury.
Joining me now is Dr. Yvonne Kaysen.
It is hard to imagine that you've had near-death experiences.
Do you really think these are accidents, just random, or there's some greater force at play?
Well, I wondered about that myself, having had five near-death experiences.
A part of me thinks that maybe it was the higher powers way of showing me what my medical specialty was supposed to be.
And in case I'd forgotten, they kept giving me another one.
Yes, Yvonne, we still want you focusing on near-death experiences and spiritual experiences.
So that's part of what I think.
Another thought I had is maybe it's because I had two near-death experiences as a child.
One at the age of five and one at the age of 11. So maybe that made me more susceptible.
So I actually had our team look into some of your near death experiences, the ones as children we can confirm.
You became a general practitioner, taking care of folks, all kinds of issues.
I would love to understand more as a doctor about some of these events.
So the most recent time you almost died, you hit your head on a rock.
You actually had a bleed in your brain.
Yes.
What did you experience when you were crossing over?
Well, I had a slip and fall accident in Niagara Falls and I fell and hit my head in rock as you mentioned.
And what I experienced was instantly, it was my spirit left my body and it felt like a force greater than myself just rapidly lifted me out of my body through this dark space and then I entered This realm that was filled with light and I was welcomed into this realm by two beings of light and that never happened to me in my previous near-death experiences and they welcomed me and I felt profound joy and it was profoundly beautiful and they mentally like telepathically
communicated to me that I had died and then I had sort of an aha experience Ah, now my sort of unusual life with all these NDEs and other spiritual experiences made sense.
NDEs being near-death experiences.
Yes.
By the way, when you're going through this, all we're seeing as physicians, and you recognize it as well as a doctor, is a brain hemorrhage, a life-threatening problem.
So, with all this bliss, were you given a choice to stay versus coming back?
Yes.
After a period of what, to me, I call it timeless time, the beings of light, the saints appeared to me again, And telepathically gave me the choice.
They said to me, you may now choose either to return into the body of a baby to further serve the divine or to come back to the injured form.
And what happened was before my head even had time to think, it was like my heart instantly responded, please guide me.
And faster than thought, between the thought I and the thought accept is when, with a gasp of air like that, I woke up in my dead or unconscious body.
Oh my goodness.
Well, help me with this.
As a physician, how do you explain to skeptics, and there are going to be some watching now saying, how is this possible?
They're probably thinking this is a hallucination.
Why is this some truly spiritual process of crossing over versus a hallucination from a brain hemorrhage, from falling and knocking your head on a rock?
Well, you know, I've been researching this now for 40 years, because it is 40 years since my 1979 near-death experience in the plane crash.
And there's a lot of evidence that's been collected now.
I'm affiliated with the International Association of Near-Death Studies.
And researchers from around the world have collected case histories documenting NDEs.
It's very well documented.
So I don't bother trying to convince the skeptics anymore.
It's a phenomenon.
And doctors, I think, have to realize that looking just at the body and mind is not enough.
That there's another element, which is the spirit.
The spirit lives on after the body dies.
So, the near-death part, I'm getting more comfortable with.
I know the literature you're speaking about.
But you're also saying that after the event, you developed a shocking after-effect.
Can you explain that to me?
Yes.
I found, actually, after each of my near-death experiences, there was a very strong transformative after-effect.
I mean, the first one when I was five, I was just a kid.
But when I was older, when I was 11, when I had the near-death experience in a car crash, Afterwards, for almost a year, I could see ghosts.
And I thought my house was haunted.
My parents thought it was just stress.
But I now know, as a NDE researcher, that was an after effect from that near-death experience that I was psychically open.
Similarly, the ones I had in my adult life, they all seemed to open me wider and wider to what we call psychic experiences.
Come on over here.
I made a little list of these.
And this is the part of this discussion I was so intrigued about.
There's speed of thought, right?
And these are allowing you, I guess, to communicate, right?
And these are side effects, let's say, of a near-death experience.
Is that true?
You're thinking faster?
I would say I am.
Vivid senses.
Very much so.
And a feeling separately from your body.
During the experiences, absolutely.
That my spirit lives on while separate from my body.
So let's take a closer look.
I've got an idea.
This is a concept that we've been playing with a little bit.
So I've got two brains here, right?
This is a brain of someone who's had a near-death experience, and this is a brain of someone who's a medium, okay?
Now, I'm gonna show you.
When you have a near-death experience, look over in this area of the brain, right?
The frontal lobe here, the temporal lobes, right?
See how it's turning dark?
Over there, right?
That's usually caused by trauma, and the blood supply to this part of the brain gets compromised relatively early on.
Now, compare it to the other brain, right?
If someone says they can connect with the other side, you're seeing similar kinds of changes, right?
Same things happen over here, and if you just look at these two brains and compare them, They're close.
So maybe there's something happening when we go through a near-death experience that allows us to transcend and do what you could otherwise access by meditation or other types of processes that you don't have to go through near-death to touch.
Again, it's the magnificence of the human brain.
It was absolutely.
And that's the part of this whole process that I think all of us need to remember.
You can read lots more about near-death experiences and other spiritual experiences in Yvonne's wonderful book.
It's called Touch by the Light.
Up next, this woman has undergone more than 10 surgeries and says that she can connect with the other side.
Stay with us.
Is there a part of your body that is not covered with these painful tumors?
No.
Shocking real stories.
There are many causes for dragon horns or cutaneous horns.
Of real life health nightmares.
Currently, there is no cure.
Plus, there could be a new hidden danger growing in your home right now.
Red mold.
We'll tell you what to look for to keep your family safe.
All new Oz.
That's coming up on Monday.
She knows death because she's faced it in more ways than one.
Zulema Arayo Farley is a cancer survivor.
She has several autoimmune diseases.
She underwent 10 surgeries.
Most would have given up, but not Zulema.
I haven't let any of those things get in the way to live the life that I want.
Zulema's brushes with death, in fact, have given her insight into how to connect people to loved ones who have crossed over.
We're back investigating the question, can brushes with death really give you the ability to communicate with the other side?
Medium Zulema Arroyo Farley joins us now.
You just saw her story, and I look at these images of you lying in bed so sickly.
And I'm fascinated that you've got insights that I'm hearing from others who have crossed over as well.
But as a child, you didn't want to believe you had the ability to talk to the other side.
I wouldn't say that it wasn't that I didn't believe.
It was, one, I didn't know anybody that was a psychic medium growing up.
Two, I knew that I was gifted and I was different than everybody else, but I couldn't pinpoint it.
Three, I knew that my family would never allow me.
To come up publicly to accept it.
There was a bigger secret behind that that I found out after I came up publicly.
And that is that I come from a lineage of psychic mediums on my father's side of the family.
Oh my goodness.
Yeah.
And you were raised Catholic?
Raised Catholic.
Went to Catholic school my whole life.
Very religious.
I still practice, so this has nothing to do with, you know, religion, not religion.
We are born this way.
This is how we are.
And I believe that there's a purpose to everything, right?
I was born very ill.
I almost died soon after I was born.
And that is the reason why I also, Dr. Ross, frankly, wrote my book so much more.
Because I knew that by telling my story, I could heal others, you know?
Sarcoma was such a pivotal moment in my life.
It changed my perspective.
It changed my outlook.
It shifted my priorities.
And it opened me up to finally living my purpose while being able to teach the tools and the mechanisms that I've used to overcome adversity.
So are you able to use these truths to reproducibly help people find out truths, realize truths about their own health?
So, 90% of my readings involve a health scan.
What that means is Spirit gives me information, insight, about their personal health situation.
I had a person very close to me come for a reading back in July of 2018. Spirit showed me that this person needed to have a mammogram, so I tell her, you really need to have a mammogram, and her response was, what do you mean?
I just had a mammogram six months ago.
I don't hear from this person until I believe February of 2019 saying, I am so sorry that I haven't been able to communicate with you, but I was diagnosed with sarcoma of the breast in September 2018. So there was something wrong.
There was something wrong.
And, you know, I'm not here to say that I'm a doctor, right?
But I can tell you that Spirit does give us information related to health.
Additionally, I had a young woman who her child wasn't eating, three years old.
He hasn't been able to speak.
And I was able, through Spirit, let her know what she should be doing with her son.
And a few weeks later, she wrote and she said that what I had told her in the reading...
She implemented and her son was speaking and eating and her and her husband just couldn't believe it.
We have a couple hundred people in the audience.
If it's okay with you, let's walk over.
Let's do it.
See if anybody's interested in talking to you and what you're sensing.
Well, I'm sure while they might not be interested, there's a lot of spirit here that is interested.
Okay.
So, we have a couple in the front row.
Hello.
What's your name?
Luann.
Luann.
I have a microphone, so I don't need to worry about grabbing your microphone.
Okay, give me one second.
Okay, the first person that I have stepping forward, he says he's a father figure.
Okay, so do you have a grandfather, father figure, somebody that was a father that passed in your life?
Yes.
Okay, and this person was telling me and showing me a lot of illness related, and there were like a lot of question marks surrounding his death.
Who starts with the letter P, first name, middle name, or last name with the letter P? No, I don't have anybody right now.
You don't?
Okay, and this person, you couldn't say goodbye to this person?
That's correct.
Okay.
Okay.
There's a lot of complexity around your family, he's telling me.
And he wants to apologize for not leaving things very clear after the fact.
So there's legal issues or troubles that your family is going through because of this?
And I don't know why they're pointing.
Do you know each other?
No.
Okay.
Does anything that I'm saying sound to you like the pee or something?
I'm sorry.
Um...
I have an uncle with the letter P. Okay.
And do you know if this was a tragic passing, by the way?
It was very sudden, a heart attack.
And very tragic.
So like, not that your family didn't suffer, but I'm with this gentleman who wants to get across to this big Italian family, I don't know if you're Italian, that he's okay and that he's eating everything that he wants, by the way.
So I don't know if you gather and there were Sunday lunches or brunches or something, but maybe people used to be telling him, don't eat that because you have that, don't do that.
He's eating everything that he can from the other side.
And he showed me that he doesn't have to inject himself.
So whatever issue or illness he had here or impediment, I don't see it on the other side.
Number seven, date of significance.
Birthday, anniversary, day of passing, number seven.
Well, an aunt, her birthday is September 7th.
Okay.
R? And she was the wife of P. Oh, so they're together.
Great.
Like I said, the names they accompany.
So R, they want to mention about R? R. Who's R? But they're together there, but they're not together necessarily.
Like, it's a happy marriage, by the way.
Okay.
Yeah.
Because they tell me that's sort of how it was in real life.
Kind of, yeah.
Is that right?
Okay.
And then he's like, this whole thing of your family, some wanted to do a celebration in one way, other wanted to do the celebration in another way.
It became a little complex, and he wants to say, finally, they let me go.
So there was a lot of miscommunication or arguing within the family about what to do with him.
He's resting at peace.
He wants to talk about the cross.
Who has the cross that belonged to him or her?
You need to find the cross.
From her, maybe.
My mother, maybe.
That is very special.
Just know when that person, and I see that it's a woman, that when that person holds that cross, it's the sign and the symbol that the spirit is with her at that moment.
Who just had surgery or is about to have surgery?
I had surgery a couple years ago.
Okay.
And you're finally okay, they're telling me.
Yeah.
And you keep doubting that.
See what you just said?
I do doubt because I had breast cancer.
So you're going to be okay, by the way.
Don't put the fear into it.
You're going to be okay.
Aw, give me a hug.
You're okay.
You're okay.
Was that helpful?
That's a message.
Yes, it's very helpful.
Yeah.
All right.
Thank you for being with us.
Thank you.
Give me much more in Zilema's book.
So much more.
We'll be right back.
I'm crying.
Coming up, celebrity OB-GYN Dr. Jackie is here to answer the questions you've been too embarrassed to ask your own doctor.
There's nothing I'm afraid to answer.
She's been a celebrity OB-GYN for over 20 years.
Stars in Bravo's hit series, Married to Medicine.
And her clientele includes stars like Toni Braxton and the families of T.I. and Usher.
She recently released the book, The Queen V, Everything You Need to Know About Sex, Intimacy, and Down There Healthcare.
Please welcome Dr. Jackie Walkers.
Thank you.
Thanks for being here.
Thank you.
Thank you for having me.
Before we get into the Queen V insights, T.I. took his daughter, accompanied his daughter for virginity testing.
You have a good relationship with T.I., so I don't want to put you in an awkward spot, but what do you feel about accompanying your child for virginity testing?
Let's clarify.
I don't think he meant that in a serious way.
I think he started out joking, and of course it blossomed into something else, but I don't think we should be doing that.
I don't think I want my dad to go with me to the doctor to see if I'm a virgin.
Especially if I'm not.
Especially if you're not.
Is there really such a thing as virginity testing?
It isn't.
There's no test.
Because some women aren't even born with a hymen.
You can destroy the hymen in sports.
Sure.
Yeah, and then surgeries.
Of course, you know we could disrupt the hymen there.
So, no.
Okay, just got past that.
One of the reasons you wrote the book was because you feel so passionately about the need for us to understand our own bodies.
Absolutely, absolutely.
I think we're in an era where women are disempowered.
And I wrote the book because I want to empower women to, one, speak up about feminine health, and two, to protect that vital part of their body and treat it like royalty.
It is royalty.
And we're ashamed about it.
We hear about it from our mom at age five, and maybe she had it wrong, maybe we don't remember it right, or maybe the science changes.
But here you are all these years later believing oftentimes myths, well-intentioned as they may be, that can take you in the exact wrong direction.
We can't even say the word when we're born.
You know, in some shows you can't even say the word.
And so kids are raised not saying the real word.
We give it names.
Oprah told me, when I was doing the Oprah show years ago, she would say, call it the Jai Jai.
Vajayjay.
Vajayjay.
Yes.
I got it wrong still.
Vajayjay.
One thing you comment on that I adored, because it's so true, is this concept of a doorknob question.
Yes.
So doctors know this, but most of you don't.
Please explain this.
So most of the time for women, and I see all women, they come in the room and they'll talk around the real situation.
And a lot of times with physicians, we have only a limited amount of time.
When you stand up and your hand hits the door, No, it's like, okay, I need to say this.
One last thing.
Just one last thing.
One last thing, yeah.
Before I walk out.
And that's what they really want to talk about.
And women are embarrassed to talk about it and they may want to tell you something they did or somebody.
And so that doorknob question comes out and they really talk about what they want to tell you.
One of the biggest doorknob questions has to do with infertility.
Absolutely.
You've been very open, which I applaud you for, about your own struggles with infertility.
Yes.
Why is it so difficult to talk about?
Women somehow take on ownership for infertility.
And I'm not sure why we do that, but there's a stigma around infertility as if it's the woman's fault.
And we don't like to talk about it because we feel like either we did something wrong or we didn't do something right.
And I want to dispel that myth that infertility is a woman's fault, and it's not.
So...
To speak honestly, you've got to get comfortable being uncomfortable.
You're a big proponent of that.
Yes, yes.
I mean, go back to infertility.
I'm okay sharing my story that makes a lot of people uncomfortable saying I'm infertile as an OBGYN and I never had a baby and I'm comfortable with it.
It's hard to get around that, though.
It takes work.
It takes work, but you can get around it.
Just start doing it.
A journey of a million miles starts with one step.
Just start doing it.
All right.
So are you okay with answering some uncomfortable questions around the country?
Let's do it.
Right.
These were viewers who were so embarrassed they didn't want to put their names on the questions.
We're going to protect them, but these are common questions.
I know many of you have.
We're going to start with your hometown of Atlanta.
Where ShareCare is based.
Yes.
So I've douched for many years, but recently a friend told me I should stop.
Is there anything wrong with douching?
Listen to your friend on this, and there's a lot wrong with douching.
There's a bacteria that should be in the vagina, lactobacillus, and douching washes away that lactobacillus, changes the pH of the vagina, and sets you up for a ton of infections.
Bacteria vaginosis and yeast, so no douching.
So down there is really a self-cleaning oven?
It's a self-cleaning.
That's exactly what I said in the book.
It's a self-cleaning oven.
Making sure you got it in there.
Up next, even more of what you wanted to know or were too afraid to ask of your G by Ed.
We're going to take all your awkward questions.
Let's take her out.
He started marrying a large number of young girls A child bride speaks out after escaping a dangerous Christian sex cult.
You're with an old man.
Yeah.
What was that like?
Disgusting, first of all.
All new Oz.
That's coming up on Tuesday.
We're back with celebrity OBGYN, Dr. Jackie Walters, who's here with everything you need to know about down there, but you're too afraid to ask.
So we reached out to our Dr. Oz viewers across the country and asked them to send us the questions they've been too embarrassed and afraid to ask their own OBGYN. Next question is from Dallas.
Here's a question.
I have bad reactions to taking the pill.
My doctor suggests trying the ring for birth control.
I'm nervous about the procedure.
How does the ring work?
So, the ring is really a birth control pill in a plastic form.
I brought you a little demo.
You like demos?
Okay, yeah, let's do it.
Let's do it.
So, of course, this...
Just orient everybody here.
All right.
Of course, I know everybody in the room knows what this is, right?
But this is for the men.
Okay, for the men.
All right, so this is the female body in a sense.
Vagina, cervix, uterus, bladder, rectum.
And so, the ring works with medicine-embedded, estrogen, progesterone, just like in a birth control pill.
It's embedded in this plastic.
And once it's down around the surface, it secretes its hormones like that?
Absolutely.
The body absorbs that just like it would if you were taking a pill.
And it would decrease it for three weeks, and then the fourth week, it comes out.
Right.
Exactly.
You take it out, and then that's the week you would probably have a period.
Okay.
Okay?
And so, the ring is inserted by, almost like you could do a tampon.
Put your foot up if you're comfortable doing that way.
I've never personally done this.
Never?
Okay.
As a doctor, you've seen it.
I've seen it.
Right.
And so the ring is compressed, slid into the vagina, and there's no absolute place to put it in the vagina as long as it's in there.
And it typically kind of fits here in the back of the vagina.
It doesn't slide out like this in most cases.
But it's there.
It's kind of...
Well, I mean, can I ask a guy question here?
Please.
I mean, doesn't it get in the way?
No, not at all.
I mean, it looks like it would get in the way.
I'm just looking.
No, no.
It becomes very soft and gelatinous.
Most men, not all, but most men won't even know it's there.
All right.
And so it just kind of says right there in the body, like you showed it, it keeps you from getting pregnant.
And in the fourth week, you just look at each other and pull it out?
You kind of take your finger.
Slide it right out.
I'm impressed.
Yes.
Do OBGYNs use that?
Is it popular?
Oh, yes.
Oh, yes.
I mean, think about it.
You don't have to think about it for three weeks.
It's there.
You're not having to remember to take a pill.
I love this segment.
This is fantastic.
I never knew about these things.
There you go.
I got all kinds of advice I can give on this now.
All right, final question is from Philly.
It's my hometown, by the way.
Here it is.
If someone has tested positive for HPV, can it be transmitted orally via saliva?
Or sharing utensils or kissing a child?
So HPV, human papillomavirus.
We do believe, and the answer really is maybe, but we think it is.
Definitely transmitted orally, but not from a utensil or kissing your child on the forehead.
It has to be typically real oral.
So the answer is yes to the oral, but no to utensils and your child.
God bless you for being here with us.
Thank you.
Sharing the wisdom you've got.
For everything you want to know about sex, intimacy, and down there health, you can check out Dr. Jackie Walter's new book, The Queen V. Now, this audience is really curious about this topic.
Yes.
You think we have a couple copies for them?
Oh, certainly.
Let's do it.
All right.
You're all going home with a copy.
Everyone in the studio audience.
We'll be right back.
Thank you.
They are some of the most common problems faced by all of us.
Pain, anxiety, brain fog, and insomnia.
They've been addressed for 5,000 years, that's a long time, by the rich heritage found in traditional Chinese medicine.
And we've been studying the merits of TCM since the beginning of our show, yet they haven't been embraced by the West.
Until now.
I recently went back to China, thanks to my trusted sponsorship partner USANA, to be a part of an important summit with Beijing University of Chinese Medicine to bring you their remarkable treasure trove of secrets.
Now what you see, what you're about to see, can help you with pain management and brain health, all without a prescription.
So today I'm introducing you to traditional Chinese medicine and what you need to know to start a regimen.
I'm back in China.
With my visits becoming more frequent, I'm feeling more and more at home here.
This is truly a land of mystery, with an ancient culture traveling these days at warp speed into the future.
It's exotic, it's exciting, and it's fun.
But the thing that amazes me most is how the healthcare needs of a billion and a half people are taken care of.
Here in China, I have observed the use of state-of-the-art Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine that dates back over 5,000 years, still offering relief.
What secrets do the ancient practices hold, and how can they help us?
Today I'm at the prestigious Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
Now I'm really excited because I'm about to see traditional Chinese medicine in action.
I'm here for a kind of east-west summit, an exchange of ideas and methods, and then an exclusive real-time tour.
Let's go.
Hi, nice to see you again.
Hosting the dialogue, university president, Professor An Lang Zhu, a world-renowned molecular biologist and immunologist.
We have like more than 2,000 identified compounds from the commonly used herbs.
I have been investigating the merits of traditional Chinese medicine since my early visits to China.
This forum is the next phase, a bridge between China and the United States.
So we are trying to study.
For particular diseases, for example, chronic pain.
Crossing that bridge, a treasure trove of traditional Chinese medical wisdom that's evolved over thousands of years.
Treatments for conditions we continue to struggle with, from pain to anxiety, brain fog to insomnia.
It's a place where ancient wisdom and modern science come together.
Global enthusiasm is rising.
I became interested in traditional Chinese medicine in the 1970s.
Meeting health practitioners from far and wide contributed.
It is extremely effective for pain conditions.
Scientists who isolate and test traditional Chinese medicines shared their findings.
And now modern science is elucidating what are some of the active compounds.
I am pleased to see the recent enthusiasm from my colleagues around the globe and my friends here in China.
The conversation is only just beginning.
Joining me in this conversation on behalf of my trusted sponsorship partner, USANA Health Sciences, our Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Rob Sennett, and Director of New Product Research, and a TCM expert, Dr. Jeremy Tian.
So why is bringing such high-quality traditional Chinese medicine solutions and philosophies to the U.S. such an important focus for USANA? Well, it's important for USANA. USANA has been a leader in improving quality of life for people for 25 years.
And the way we've been doing that is mainly through optimizing nutrition, because when you get optimized nutrition, your body operates exactly like it should.
Well, as we've been exploring the world, just like you have, we're looking at new technologies, new innovations that we could apply to improve our wellness vision.
For the future.
And so we've come across traditional Chinese medicine and Eastern medicine practices.
And we feel that we can incorporate these to really help improve the quality of life and then also help people with their preventative approach.
So what is your vision of how American consumers, American doctors, who have a certain way of thinking about health, can benefit from traditional Chinese medicine secrets?
Again, this is 5,000 years of wisdom.
How do you pull it into the 21st century?
Yeah, so actually, what we see is that there's a convergence going on between Western science and Eastern medicine.
Where we're learning from those 5,000-year-old traditions, we're applying Western science technology, and these two are merging together.
So we see that the challenge of rising healthcare costs, a lot of that is because we need to take more of a preventative focus.
And we see that the incorporation of Eastern medicine and traditional Chinese medicine will simultaneously improve people's quality of life and also help control that cost of healthcare expenditure.
Dr. Tian, why should somebody, in your opinion, start a traditional Chinese medicine regimen?
So what we do here in USANA is really to help to bridge the gap between East and Western medicine.
And in order to do that, we got to do good research in terms of we can deliver the good product to the customers in terms of the good quality, safety, and scientifically sound products.
And that would help us to deliver, to remove The guesswork from the customers in terms of the choose of the products.
And one of the good products that is very exciting is on Copa Prime.
Copa Prime.
Yeah, which we'll talk about later.
It's interesting.
Co-prime is emblematic of how this works, and I do want to speak to it.
But what I love is the fact that we can take these old ideas, do studies that make sense to us in the West, and begin to say, hey, you know what, there's a reason why it's still around after 5,000 years.
Because if it didn't work, they would have stopped using it.
But if it's still there, which one's the best one for us?
How do we customize it to us?
So when we come back, we're going to give you unique access into the future of managing your brain fog, pain, and insomnia.
This stuff works for a billion and a half people.
It could work for you.
Don't go away.
What happens when you have a health problem in China and you turn to traditional Chinese medicine for help?
Well, I had the extraordinary opportunity for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, along with my trusted sponsorship partner, USANA Health Sciences.
It was a wonderful trip.
Take a look.
Dr. Wang, teach me the fundamental principle of traditional Chinese medicine.
We see everything in the body as interconnected, the balance between yin and yang.
Do I know that sign, that yin-yang symbol we always see?
Yes.
So if I have diabetes, is that too much of my yang or my yin?
We might view it as a deficiency of yin.
Okay, can I feel your pulse first?
To understand diagnosis, I take the patient's chair.
Can I check your tongue?
There are four methods, observation, listening and smelling, asking questions, and pulse taking.
In Western medicine, a pulse is just the speed and is it regular?
You're looking for much more.
We feel a lot of things, like the strength, the frequency, and also even the muscles above the vessels.
Oh my goodness, a real-time acupuncture.
It was time to observe some treatments.
What's bothering you?
Headache.
Headaches?
Alright, so one, two, there's a needle back here, three, four, five.
So how does this work?
How does a needle in the foot and in the arms help with a headache?
See, we have many, many meridians in the body.
The meridians are like the rivers of the energy.
We call that qi.
So when the qi gets stuck or blocked somewhere, then problem occurs.
So if this is an energy meridian here, and it's blocked, you put a needle, let's say, here, and you reopen this pathway.
Yes, yes.
For example, she has a headache, but it's on the same line on the feet.
You know, the last time I was here, I had moxibustion.
I did it because I had a crick in my neck.
Do you have treatments like that here, too?
Yeah, let me show you moxibustion.
Good luck.
What's bothering you?
And are the moxibustion sticks burning you?
A lot, really.
What's the theory here, Dr. Wang?
Actually, it's similar to acupuncture.
During the moxibustion, the heat and the smoke generated helps the flow of vital energy or qi.
This herb is strong.
What's it called again?
Mudwort.
And these herbs are really important in traditional Chinese medicine, I'm saying.
Yes, actually, let's go to our pharmacy to see more herbs.
Welcome to our pharmacy with more than 500 different kinds of Chinese medicine.
And I'm noticing that she's pulling herbs out.
These drawers are deep.
My goodness!
So, you know, if you're trying to decide to go to Eastern medicine and get a formulary like this, or more Western medicine, how do you choose?
Generally, Western medicine is more appropriate for emergency or infections.
Well, for chronic problems, patients prefer to go to Chinese medicine.
It's so colorful.
Well, I know you bribed me with a toast.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, we prepared chrysanthemum tea with Chinese wolfberry.
Yeah, that's good to your eyes.
Oh, it's helpful for surgeons.
Yes.
Well, let's toast to the wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine that I know will save many around the world.
Okay.
Ganbei.
USANA Health Sciences Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Rob Steader, is here along with USANA's Director of New Product Research, Dr. Jeremy Tien.
So how is USANA working, Dr. Tien, with these ancient Chinese medicine practices to make them more precise, more accessible to the West?
So, we just saw the video that there are more than 500 Chinese herbs.
And what's interesting about the Chinese herbs is that one of the herbs does many things.
And taking ginseng for example, ginseng has been known to supplement qi for your body, which is vital.
But it does that in many organs, so it could be used in many occasions.
Now the key questions to ask is how we can use the Chinese herb in the specific health conditions, and hopefully with multiple ingredients that could work synergistically.
So I will take copa prime as an example here, how we address that.
So copa prime has two major ingredients, but copa and ginseng.
Each of them, we know, with the only research, we know they have multiple effects.
Which may help us to explain that why Copa Prime has such a big effect on the cognitive function as we observed in a clinical trial.
So what's interesting to me is, and I got curious about Copa Prime, because I think it's emblematic of what's going on here.
Here you have breaking news, by the way, new clinical trials that make sense to us in the West because it was done the way we think about health, but it was using solutions That were designed thousands of years ago and had been used conventionally in Chinese medicine.
And when you see that translation happening, and thanks to Usana, it's happening faster because you're helping to support some of this research, all of a sudden we can open up this huge treasure trove of solutions.
What are some of the ingredients, Rob, that Usana is especially interested in, including in this research, bringing traditional Chinese medicine to the West?
So there's a lot of ingredients we're interested in, but this particular product, Copa Prime, uses two traditional Chinese medicine ingredients.
We use bacopa and ginseng.
And both those ingredients have been used for thousands of years.
They have their own unique effects, but then combined together through our clinical studies, we've shown that they have a dramatic synergistic effect together.
So they produce a result more so than what you would expect from each of the ingredients by themselves.
If you can, just two seconds on this trial, I'm so fascinated by it, because you actually measured outcomes both as we would define them in the West, but also as they would define them in China.
Correct.
So what we did was, this was actually research that was done in Australia, and it was done on cognitive functioning so that we could prove that with Copa Prime, people could learn better, their memory worked better, and they had overall better cognitive functioning.
So where can you learn more about Copa Prime and also get insights into all the things USANA is doing with traditional Chinese medicine?
Well, you can go to our website, USANA.com, and we've got all the information there about our most recent research, plus all the other products.
Take advantage of what billions of people around the planet are already using.
Why not try it here?
I want to thank our partner, USANA Health Sciences, and you can go to DrOz.com, because thanks to them, you can enter for a chance to win one of a thousand bottles of USANA Copa Prime.
Try it, see if it works.
We'll be right back.
We're closely monitoring the spread of the potentially deadly coronavirus so you can stay healthy and in the know.
Follow me on Facebook and also on YouTube, where I'll be sharing the latest coronavirus developments each day.
I'm here in Los Angeles, the most populated city in California.
Coronavirus fears are running high across the state today, as CDC officials have confirmed the patient being treated at UC Davis Medical Center is the first case of unknown origin in America.
Meaning the patient hasn't traveled to China or known to be directly connected to someone who has been affected.
This could mark an important change in the spread of the virus in this country.
From direct exposure, physical contact with an infected person, to community acquired, which means the virus can be transmitted amongst the general population.
It took four days for the patient to be tested by government agencies because they didn't have that China connection.
Luckily, shrewd doctors who have experienced with COVID-19 recognize the signs and say they took precautions to limit exposure.
So far, at least 60 U.S. residents have tested positive for coronavirus.
42 of them were passengers on the Diamond Princess cruise.
But if this disease has become community-born, it changes our ground game completely.
And the CDC isn't mincing words about a potential widespread outbreak here, saying it's not so much a question of if, but when.
In response, President Trump named Vice President Mike Pence to coordinate the government's response.
In the meantime, you can control the spread of panic yourself.
Be sure to take precautions as you would to protect yourself from the seasonal flu.
So wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds and avoid touching your fingers to your face.
You can sleep and exercise.
It actually helps your immune system.
We're going to continue to bring you the breaking news on coronavirus as it unfolds.
