Um certainly her the their faith was uh a core component of their relationship, very strong in their faith.

Um, as we continue to look at the casket of Charlie Kirk being removed from Air Force Two.
And Craig, give us uh sense of what it's like there right now.
Javier and Faye, uh, what I can tell you is we continue to monitor, of course, the uh casket there being transported out at Sky Harbor International Airport.
The group out here at Turning Point USA headquarters continues to grow.
We're seeing a massive surge, in fact, right now, compared to the last couple of hours.
I believe, you know, people getting off work now have some availability to be able to come down here and pay their respects.
But we have seen this steady flow for the past 24 hours.

So that's why you guys see the snipers here, obviously Secret Service gonna be on scene.
Both on the left and right side, and you can see people coming by with flowers, balloons, signs, uh, many of them stopping and taking a moment and saying a silent prayer.
Uh we've seen couples, uh, we've seen friends, we've seen children out here as well.
A wide array of people coming down to pay the respects to Charlie, and in speaking with so many of them, uh, they're talking about the faith and the messaging that Charlie brought to the community.
Uh something they want to see continue.
Uh the issue of unity and family and faith, a key component for so many out here speaking to us.
And uh I don't see a stoppage to this uh any time soon.
This is going to continue to grow.
Again, Phoenix Police are on both sides of the area here.
There have not really been any issues.
The several hours that we've been out here, there's been one issue, and that was taken care of very quickly.
Uh everything else has just been person after person coming by, paying their respects, some staying for a few minutes, some staying even longer.
We've seen some gentlemen out of here for about two or three hours actually, uh just taking in the moment, taking it, going through their process, and that's what this is.
Everyone has their own way to process and deal with such a tragedy like this within their community and being so closely tied, of course, to the Phoenix Valley.
We've also seen a number of people just driving by.
They drive by, they take some pictures, shoot some video, and they go on their way.
So again, everybody kind of processing their own situation, processing it in their own way through their own faith.
And we've seen a couple different prayer circles also uh join up here to my right, your left of the screen, uh people joining together to share with one another and join hands and and pray not only for Charlie Kirk, but for his family, his wife, his children, and for the community overall here in the Phoenix Valley.

Because we have seen that in various parts of the country right now.

The individual that drove by, they drove by in a car and they started screaming out uh different sayings and words out of their window as they were driving by.

The individual kept driving on, it was a female driver, uh, drove on down the road.

Not sure what that encounter, uh what happened during that encounter, if they just wanted to touch base probably someone that was pissed off that he was pro-life.
But um everything else has has been calm.
We have seen a lot of chatter on our Facebook page, ABC 15's Facebook page, people responding to not only the coverage of what's taking place, but also the fact that uh Charlie Kirk's body is being brought back on Air Force Two.
Uh there are a lot of people concerned that this is misuse of taxpayer dollars.
So when you talk, Faye about the other side of this story, clearly there are people that that have different messaging than Charlie Kirk carried throughout the communities on our campuses throughout How's this a misuse of tax dollars?
I mean, the guy literally was critical to Trump's ground game of getting him into office.
Wait, what?
Whichever state he was in, that's why many times there were often petitions to not have him go onto those campuses individually.
And there was a lot of pushback from they don't want him to go on a couch campuses because he knows you're gonna make the students look stupid.
I'm telling you, bro, when I tell you guys that the left is way more about censorship, this is what I'm talking about.
They cannot debate their ideas, they cannot actually have their ideas hold up in the crucible debate.
So what do they do?

You know what's interesting is uh this morning when I woke up and people were posting, uh we need to be more like September twelfth.
And of course, those of us who live through that tragedy 24 years ago remember the unity that it happened the day after, where everybody was so loving, happy to happy to see each other exchange pleasantries, hugs, handshakes, and it really changed the country twenty-four years ago,
and people saying a situation like this, whether you agree with it, whether you don't agree with it, because let's be honest, some people on social media were pretty vile yesterday when uh you know mentioning uh the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
But uh people saying they continue to be more like September twelfth and bring everybody together.

Yeah, and I don't want to compare necessarily September eleventh and what happened on September eleventh to what's happened here.

This morning, my team received an email from an officer at ATF.
The email included a screenshot from what appears to be an internal message received uh describing a weapon and cartridges located by an ATF and other law enforcement uh near the scene of the Charlie Kirk shooting at the Utah State University.
Quote on September tenth, twenty twenty-five at approximately twelve four twenty-four PM, the conservative political influencer Charlie Kirkwashaan killed at the Utah Valley University in Orem, uh, Utah.
Mr. Kirk was speaking at the university as part of the American Comeback Tour.
Multiple SLC and uh SLC One and three agents responded immediately.
The suspect fired one shot from an elevated position on a rooftop in an adjacent building on the campus, and surveillance video shows the suspect jumping off and fleeing the area on foot.
ATF and other law enforcement uh located an older model imported Mauser uh three 3606 caliber bowl action rifle wrapped in a towel in a wooded near uh area near the campus.
The location of the firearm appears to match the suspect's route of travel.
The spent cartridge was still chambered in addition to three unspent rounds at the top Fed magazine.
All cartridges have engraved wording on them.
Expressing transgender and anti-fascist ideology.
In emercy trace has been submitted, uh an ATF SLC has working leads generated by the trace.
So when they say an emergency trace guys, what they're doing is they're going to do what's called uh ATF E trace.
And an each race, guys, is when the ATF gets the origin of the gun and they find out who purchased the gun first, so they can kind of work their way backwards.
This is why I tell you guys all the time don't sell your fucking guns, bro.
If you sell your gun and end up at a crime scene, what'll happen is the ATF will do a uh uh each race, and after they do the E trace, they're gonna start to the original buyer of that gun, and they're gonna go to you and ask you questions like, hey, what did you do with this gun or whatever?
So that's what's going on here.
The fireman ammunition has been taken by the FBI for DNA analysis and fingerprint impressions.
Upon completion of forensics, the firearm will be disassembled for additional importer information.
Multiple people of interest have contacted or detained, uh have having contacted or detained because of eyewitness testimony and review of video footage.
The primary suspect is yet to be identified.
ATF is assisted uh the investigation of multiple other federal, state, local partners, and the case is co-led by the FBI in Utah SBI, which I figured that's what it would be.
Um, which is gonna be their state police, basically.
State Bureau of Investigation is gonna be their SBI.
Um that makes sense.
Um that's what's going on right now.
Um, so this is what has me a bit I mean, obviously the other thing too that you guys need to know is that um they obviously wanted the gun to be found.
They wrapped it in a white towel and left it there.
They wanted the gun to be found.
So yeah, Crowder got the um Crotter definitely got the inside scoop here.
So and uh and then they got subpoenaed by the ATF right after.
So that means that they're this is accurate.
They probably want to find out who the wit who gave them that information.

Um, but the other side of this from the reporting and journalism side of things, of course, we have watched the orchestrated dance, if you will, of law enforcement and security when it comes to these visits.
You know, long before we got word, in fact, and we were able to report earlier today on ABC 15's Facebook page and ABC15.com, and you can receive that push alert.
Um, law enforcement was already in the mix.
You know, these details and the orchestrating of all of this started late last night, right after all of this took place.
You have the president, the vice president, his team, you have Secret Service began working, and those calls started coming in to Phoenix as well.
Law enforcement, uh, whether city, uh, you know, county officials, etc., the highway DPS, every everyone comes into this mix to close all of these uh on ramps, the off-ramps.
You have to have security and it's moving security.
So while you have an on-ramp or an off ramp closed for a moment, and the the uh all the vehicles in the Caravan, you know, make their way through the motorcade there, make their way through a certain area.
They'll wait a certain amount of time and then they'll open up those ramps again to allow, of course.
Right now we're talking rush hour traffic, which is a normal headache anyway.
Now you're adding this layer on top of it, but they wait a certain distance.
That's all security protocol.
Um they'll reopen that up, and then when it's time, whenever they get to the funeral home and they do whatever they're going to do there, there will be certain blocks and certain perimeters.
Secret Service will have already scanned that building.
The funeral home has been scanned.
They knew who's in that building.
Uh they know literally everyone in that building, they know who they are and even their background.
Um, and they'll make sure that that perimeter in that area is completely secure to ensure that when they arrive, everything can go smoothly there.
Uh they'll clear out.
There won't be protesters, all of that things.

Charlie was shot at that event.
He was transported to a local hospital where he later passed.
Last night his body was moved to the office, the state office of the medical examiner.
We will continue to facilitate movements to get him home today and with his family.
He has an indication.
Yesterday during the investigative process, we located a couple of persons of interest.
We interviewed those individuals.
And after releasing them and after clearing them of being suspects, they fixed scrutiny.
They face threats.
We asked the public to be patient with the investigative process.
These individuals were not suspects, they were people of interest.
Um we asked that you do not impose into those in those people and that investigative process.
Um they don't deserve that harassment for being subject to that.
I'd like to thank all the investigators that are involved in this.
They have worked around the clock all day yesterday through the night last night.
Investigators from the State Bureau of Investigations, from county, from city agencies, university, our federal partners with the FBI, the ATF, um, and many others.
Those are just a few of the people that we have involved in this.

Through all that work last night, we were able to make a few few breakthroughs.
We were able to track the movements of the shooter.
Starting at 11:52 a.m.
This subject arrived on campus, shortly away from campus.
We have tracked his movements onto the campus through the stairwells.

After the shooting, we were able to track his movements as he moved to the other side of the building, jumped off of the building, and fled um off of the campus and into a neighborhood.

In America, we believe debate should happen in colleges, Right?

And he'd have a respectful debate.
We disagree.

He'd go back and forth.
Would it be an abortion?

What would you tell President Trump right now?
What should his message be to the country?

But I'm looking at President Trump and I'm thinking, emotionally, how does he go through this?
This is like a son to him.
And at the same moment, how does he not have the emotion that that was exactly what happened to him?
And he could end up just like Charlie had he not turned his head that one second.

You know, I've I look at it too, where I watched members on the House floor argue over praying.
This is what I want you to think about Charlie.

But if you asked him what he wanted to be known for, a father, a husband, and a person who believed in faith.

Authorities revealing the shooter was radicalized by an extremist network and a reminder he was only 16 years old.
Tonight, Colorado authorities identifying 16-year-old Desmond Hawley as a student who opened fire at Evergreen High School using a revolver.
Investigators did not say where the shooter got the gun, but said he was radicalized by an extremist network.
They tried to find new targets, and he he came up against a roadblock on many of those doors.
He couldn't get to those kids.
They say he continued to reload as he shot out windows and at lockers.
Tonight officials say two students remain in critical condition.
Authorities say they have obtained search warrants for his home, phone, and locker, and add that his parents are cooperating with the investigation.
And those teachers and those students did their job and uh took into account what they've learned, and it kept them.
And guys, just so you know, with the Annapolis uh U.S. Naval Academy, right now it looks like there's three casualties being reported.

That's why a lot of police departments you'll see that they'll have a policy where if an officer's involved in a shooting, they don't interview them for facts and for 24 hours they'll wait till the next day.
So there may have been people who that police talked to yesterday who have called since and said, Hey, you know what?
I just remembered, I saw this guy with a backpack running this direction or or whatever it would be.
Um so the interviews are gonna continue, like I said, the forensics are going to continue uh as the manhunt now begins.
And I think you're going to see all the boots on the ground looking for this guy.
It's it's going to be, I believe, almost tantamount, probably not to the level, but pretty close to when uh the Boston Marathon bombers were at large, and you just saw the massive manhunt.
That's that's what Utah is going to look like.

Jeff, I want to get your insight too on what what I know hindsight is 2020, but what did you think of the venue where Charlie Kirk was yesterday?
And uh, you know, did you see some areas where uh there was security flaws?
Well, I will tell you in in over two decades of preparing sites for people that the Secret Service protected.
The hardest sites I ever did were outdoor sites.
They are a monster.
Uh, you have to worry about so many things that you don't worry about when you're indoors.
You know, long lines of sight, people could lob in mortars from thousands of yards away, drones, like there's just so much to worry about.
Um and look, Charlie Kirk didn't have the assets that the president had.
If the president was in that same situation where he was kind of in that bowl surrounded by buildings, um, those buildings probably would have been cleared out.
We certainly would have had snipers.
We would have had ballistic glass.
Uh there would have been uh surveillance teams not just in the perimeter, but outside the perimeter as well.
And unfortunately, uh Charlie Kirk didn't have the benefit of that.
If I was someone who was advising someone like Charlie Kirk, who certainly invited um a divisive audience, um, I I probably would have just begged him to have his events inside uh because it's just there's so much less you need to worry about.
And do you think that's where it it probably needs to go in the future for not only political events, but like pundits that are doing political events?

Um obviously the death very, very uh sad for the family there of uh Charlie, but uh was there anything that really stuck out as far as um his personnel, his security detail that he had.
Um really didn't just because um we know that you know prominent people like like Charlie don't have the really the assets to secure a site the way we would secure it for the president for even that small venue that fit 3,000 people yesterday, you're looking easily at six figures to bring in every asset that the president would get.
That's from drivers who can do tactical driving to the people who are right around him to counter snipers to ballistic glass.
It's a huge uh not just a huge lift, but also a huge bill that comes with that.
So um wasn't really surprised.

Um those have already been released, uh, but we want to make sure that they get as much attention as possible so that we can get help from uh from the public in uh in tracking down uh this uh this this evil human being.

There's a shoe imprint where we believe the suspect is clearly identified as wearing converse tennis shoes.

It's important to note his black t-shirt, his black pants.
Um, and though there is appears to be some white on the soles of those converse tennis shoes.
Those are all identifiable items that we're looking for in the stills that are gonna follow this.
You're gonna see a very distinctive t-shirt with an American flag and appears to have an eagle on it.
There's also a baseball cap with a triangle on it and a pair of sunglasses, all distinctive, all things that we would ask the public to look for and try to uh identify if they know someone who is has those items who has been seen wearing those items.
We're looking for all that information.
Here you see the suspect after dropping off the building.
He moved around across this grassy area, around the parking lot.
We're going to pan to the right.
After he crosses the street, this is where he moves over into the wooded area.
Um this is the a the uh video evidence that we we utilize to track his movements and to locate that firearm in that wooded area following the discovery of this evidence.

I uh I I would also just add a word of note for for those uh for those people who are spending so much time on on social media.
Um I think Charlie said it best that when when things get get bad, we should put our phones down and uh spend a little time with our our families.
There is a tremendous amount of disinformation.
Uh we are tracking uh our um our our our team, the the state team, and uh I'm sure the federal team as well.
What we're seeing is our adversaries want violence.
Um uh champ China, we have bots from Russia, China, all over the uh the world that are trying to instill disinformation and encourage violence.
Uh I would encourage you to ignore those, to uh to turn off those streams and uh and to spend a little more time with uh with our families.
Uh we we desperately need some healing.
We'll have more to say about that in the uh in the days and weeks to come.
More than anything, we are going to catch this person.
Uh last thing I will just say is we've been working with our attorneys, uh, getting uh getting everything that we need, affidavits ready so that we can pursue the uh the death penalty in this case.

And then the third thing I will say is how he said there's over 20 agencies united to in this manhunt.
Uh incredible amount of men and women out there, all with the same goal.
Um I don't know if the suspect is listening right now, but if he is, I would tell him his best bet right now.
I don't know what his end game is, but his best bet right now might be to walk into a police station and just say, Here I am.
Um it's it's time to take me in.
Because he's he's gonna get found.
Uh whether he chooses to try to go live in the woods or whether he has a friend, you know, hole him up somewhere.
Somebody's gonna see him and somebody's gonna say something, and it's it's gonna end for him.
Yeah, no doubt about that, especially with all these uh new photos and videos.
I mean, look look at the one they showed just uh moments ago uh of him uh climbing down uh the roof there and then jumping down and then ultimately going across the street into that field.
But that uh was some new video that we received just uh moments ago from the authorities.
Yeah, and in the and this was kind of highlighted when they were talking about the video, the recklessness of all the things he touched on is along his way, you know, grabbing the railing and letting himself down.
And I know people probably don't think about the footprints they leave, but again, a valuable forensic piece of forensic evidence.
Uh they knew they were converses, and when they eventually catch him, if he's wearing those shoes, uh wear patterns on shoes are almost as um as damning as a fingerprint, uh, because we all stride in our unique way.
Um so they'll be they'll be able to figure that out too.
But yes, some recklessness on his part if he was if he was planning a long-term uh long a long-term escape from this.
Uh that's certainly not way to not the way to do it.

You can't dodge your fingerprints.
You are stuck with them.
Yeah, and uh we're just getting that new look here of uh this uh person that they are looking for.
And uh, you know, as these images continue to really showcase and uh, you know, I think it's just a great example, right, Jeff, of just how many cameras there is now where you go out in public, you are on camera.

At the heart of the event was the Lozie Center building, a multi-story structure adjacent to the main courtyard where Kirk's event took place.
Charlie Kirk himself was positioned on an outdoor stage under a large white tent in Blazen with a Tours banner.
He was sitting And speaking into a microphone, facing hundreds of students seated along the main walkway and gathered around the stage.
The crowd was estimated at over 3,000 attendees, including students and visitors.
Meanwhile, on the rooftop of the Lowe's Center building, a person dressed entirely in black was seen.
This building was approximately 430 feet, about 131 meters from where Kirk and his team were stationed on the stage.
The rooftop provided a clear vantage point with open sight lines directly to the event area.
Security footage and numerous eyewitness accounts have confirmed that the gunshot rang out from this rooftop location while Kirk was actively speaking.
The bullet struck Kirk in the neck, causing him to collapse on the stage.
But how did the assassin escape despite the huge crowd?
The assailants' use of distance, the campus layout, and what is believed to be a scoped firearm indicate a high degree of planning and precision.
The shooter chose an elevated concealed position to avoid close detection and maximize the chances of escape.
Here is the bullet trajectory.
Given this altitude, the assassin had a clear, unobstructed line of sight directly to the stage where Charlie Kirk was standing and addressing the crowd.
The bullet's trajectory descended steeply and accurately through open space to strike Kirk in the neck.
Which strongly suggests the use of a scoped firearm design for long-range precision.
As soon as the shot was fired, the gunman likely retreated to an entrance on the top of the building.
Despite security efforts, a shooter disappeared without a trace, climbing down from the building and blending into nearby campus structures or escape routes surrounding the Lowe's center.

The security detail consisted of six officers along with Kirk's personal security team.
1220 p.m. lead up to the shooting.
Kirk was seated at the debate table, answering questions from students.
The discussion touched on sensitive topics such as mass shootings and gun violence.
Kirk remained calm and composed as he responded to a question about mass shooters, still holding the microphone while seated.
The atmosphere was lively but controlled.
Many sitting close to the stage while others watched from nearby balconies and standing areas.
1222 to 1223 p.m.
The assassination.
Suddenly, a loud gunshot echoed through the courtyard.
Kirk was hit in the neck while speaking.
Within minutes, I've heard different things.
Some people say that he was shot from the side.
This video saying that he shot from the front.

It was confirmed that Kirk had died from his injuries at the hospital.
But to truly understand assassinations, we need to look at different case studies where even a single assassin has wreaked havoc by targeting high-profile leaders.

But first, let's take a closer look at how the Secret Service works to prevent assassinations.
Closest to the principal, in this case Trump, are teams of around five to seven highly trained Secret Service agents.
In the 100-foot radius that is the middle perimeter, there's usually a mix of Secret Service and local law enforcement.
An armored SUV or limousine is also on standby within this middle perimeter, covering portions of the motorcade and any pre-event screening.
In the outer perimeter, security largely falls to local law enforcement officers.
In Butler, the building the shooter climbed was Yeah, and that's where they fucked up with with that one.
Technically outside of the rallied venue, and the Secret Service didn't sweep it.
It fell through the cracks, which still falls to the Secret Service because it means nobody checked to ensure the plan was implemented correctly.
But before we move ahead, let's map out the basic positions of all the parties involved.
First, we have the former president's podium, and just beside him are three bleachers where a selected audience is seated.
Behind them is the sniper team, which can be divided into north and south positions located on three buildings.
Sniper Team North is located on the first building, while on the third building you can find Sniper Team South.
Almost sandwiched in between are these trees, which provided some cover from the Secret Service sniper team north.
Finally, we have the shooter, who climbed from one of those ladders and selected this position to take out his target.
And he missed.
This is what the shooter is likely using, a red dot sight with magnification.
When ready, he squeezes the trigger, firing three bullets in a controlled manner.
Trump is so lucky, man, because he turned his head to look at the immigration chart right here, and that's what saved him.
Let's map out each of the bullets in detail.
Out of the three bullets fired, the first bullet hit Mr. Trump on the ear.
This is the same round that also hit two audience member and bleacher three, rendering one of them in critical conditions.
Let's move the camera to a top angle to show the line along which the bullet traveled.
Next, two more bullets were fired.
One of them hit a tractor, which was being used as a makeshift array for speakers.
These rounds also hit a hydraulic lever, causing it to burst, almost dropping the speakers.
The last five shots were probably fired in semi-automatic mode.
One of these bullets sadly hit an attendee, and our condolences goes out of his family.
Yeah, his name was Corey Compator.

In total, around seven to eight bullets were likely fired by the shooter.
Here is a map of all the bullets fired to help you understand better.
Everybody was complaining about the Secret Service sniper for taking two minutes to take out the shooter.
But let's take a look from the sniper's point of view.
First of all, we have these tree lines that could have obstructed the sniper team north, while the sniper team south had a clear line of sight.
Here are two scenarios circulating on the internet.
In scenario one, the leaves and branches of the tree covered almost 90% of the shooter's entire position.
However, for an experienced shooter, this would have been possible to manage.
He might have fired the shot and took out the threat.
Let's look at scenario two.
The distance from sniper south to the shooter was around 600 to 700 feet.
This is also a possible shot and can be accounted for by assuming that sniper team south took out the shooter from this range.
When ready, he took his shot and fired his rifle with a.308 Winchester round, taking out the shooter.
So maybe there was some miscommunication between the two teams regarding who should take out the shooter, resulting in a delay of around two minutes when the threat was detected on the roof.

After extensive scouting, he began searching for the ideal vantage point, carefully timing his movements.
His aim was to strike at the precise moment when Mr. Trump would reach the fifth hole of the golf course.
