I see there's a couple Twitter spaces I'm gonna go into one of them so you guys could hear real time updates.
I just saw the footage not too long ago.
I'm just gonna join this thing right quick for you guys.
Guys with guns.
Um, but you know, uh well, the the latest report I have again from my one source is apparently he's getting a blood transfusion, and obviously he would need to.
This was uh I this this video is so horrible, and we've already gone through a horrific week of videos on these CC TV cameras we had of the North Carolina incident.
This one we're gonna have, I'm sure, because these students all hey everyone.

Yeah, so I'm the chairman of the College Republicans of America.
I had five students working the event with Charlie.
Um the latest updates we're getting from those students.
One who's uh whose friend is at the hospital and one who's a state rep in Utah have both said that Charlie has passed.
And that's that is unconfirmed by the news.
This is just the word on the ground.
Can I ask quickly?
Who confirmed that?
One of my students who is near the hospital and uh one who is a state rep from Utah.
A state rep in the in the house in the the house, the the chambers in Utah.
The state rep. Were they you said they were working the event, were they working the event for Charlie Kirk's team?
Were they working the event in what capacity?
So our our college republicans work uh closely with Turning Point on many events.
They're often shared um shared club members, and so they were volunteering to run the event with Charlie.
So they were they were there when he was shot, and some followed him to the hospital.
It it's it would be miraculous if it survives, and we still hold out hope that that's the case.
Um I don't know.
I think uh this is a really really sad event.
Look, uh, you know, and and this this could have serious very far-reaching complications.
A lot of people ask me as kind of a very astute or long time student at the very least of political history.
When do things take this sort of rotten, very um very divisive turn.
Obviously, we've had spouts of it before the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, the assassination of JFK, RFK, Martin Luther King Jr.
That was a big swath there.
But what what was the modern turning point?
And it was an interesting one.
I always say it's the 2002 uh funeral of Paul Wellstone.
Paul Willstone was a a very progressive liberal democrat who died tragically in a plane crash, and his funeral turned into a huge rallying uh sort of it was a campaign uh stop, basically, for a lot of people for a lot of democrats, and it it really became this kind of religious fervor.
And so I hope that that that doesn't happen kind of here on the right.
That basically um, you know, Charlie's funeral, if he if he has passed, I'm well I don't want to get into it, but I I I worry about these turning points, which really can turn people and movements in a in a very traumatic, sometimes necessary way, and sometimes a really sad way, and sometimes those combined.
I don't know what's going to happen.
Well, I think I think the issue is you have this culture where political violence has become accepted in a sad way because when people on the right just basically get dehumanized, it basically creates a culture where you have people taking shots at people because they genuinely have been warped into thinking they're protecting democracy, and there's no case where shooting someone defends democracy.
It's completely the thick.
Yeah, it's I mean, the the comments that I'm seeing on posts, because people have anonymity and people are lashing out.
Here's one of them.
I'd offer a thought or prayer, but I don't pray to his vampiric white Jesus and God.
Love would probably see this as great timing.
Oh no, I hope the bullet wasn't hurt too badly.
It's almost as if people don't like bigoted hateful men with superiority complexes.
I mean, and that's happening minutes after this guy is fighting for his life, presumably, right?
And that's just a sample.
The comments that I'm seeing are awful.
And I know that the online sort of format really does breed that type of um thing going on.
Uh and that anonymity uh allows people to just lash out in ways that they wouldn't in person, but it certainly doesn't help things.
And this is going to um this is gonna have uh uh of long-lasting ramifications.
It has been confirmed dead now, I believe.

Um a number of sources America First Posts, Mint Fest News, um of the uh news now um has been firm.

So again, I I don't think we have uh definitive information uh yet.

This is uh from Turning Point USA.
Uh, this is from Aubrey Leitches, who's the public relations manager for Turning Point USA.
She said, this is quote, this is an ongoing situation.
We can confirm that Charlie Kirk has been shot.
He's in the hospital, and we are praying for him at this time.
That's the only thing that we got.
That is the official statement directly from Turning Point USA, which Charlie Kirk leads uh uh in a major conservative movement.
So no other statement related to him passing away, just to provide a quick recap uh uh to everybody on the situation and why we're having this boat, the this space.
I mean, this was a very quick event uh from once we first got the original report to where we did it and the videos coming out.
Uh uh, but obviously the first reports that we got was that uh conservative uh commentator Charlie Kirk, really well known uh uh across social media specifically on X, but also TikTok, YouTube.
Uh, he was shot during one of his very famous uh debates in college campuses, something that I believe really propelled him uh to fame.
Uh he was shot at the Utah Valley University uh approximately around two, I want to say 240 uh p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
Uh we haven't even had probably an hour since the first reports of him getting shot uh from the videos that we seen, it was a very uh graphic shot, hit him in the neck.
Uh looks like it even probably from the video in the blood, puncture his artery, uh severe wound.
Um the shooter has been detained.
Uh there was kind of there was a video where an older white gentleman appears to have been detained, but then subsequent reporting indicated that the shot actually came from 200 yards away.
Um and it was in a different area, not necessarily connected to the event specifically.
And although in the beginning it seemed that maybe the shooter was not detained, now has been confirmed by the Utah Valley University spokeswoman uh Alan Trenner that the shooter has been taken into custody.
And the key aspect of this is that uh the shooter was not a student.
Uh the specific area where the shot came from was the Lowe's Center, which is about 200 yards away from the event.
Um again, that's kind of it.
We're we're getting conflicting information on this on the situation with Charlie Kirk.
Uh Justin from his sources on the ground indicated that he was alive at the moment he was shot and taken to the hospitals.
We're hearing unconfirmed reports that he he he's passed away.
Again, the the America first post Where they indicated that he passed away, uh, was subsequently deleted.
Um, so we don't have any additional information on that.
We do not know who the shooter was.
Uh, we do not know if you know the specific aspects of his motivations, although I think it's fairly safe to assume and clearly state that this has all the hallmarks of a being domestic terrorism and that he was targeted because of his political voice and the reasons why that happened.
Uh Justin, I'll just quote quickly for you if there's anything I missed in this quick recap.

Benny Johnson has a video from another angle on the other side or the side view of the campus.
It's not as graphic, but you definitely see Charlie going down.
But you can see the vastness of the crowd that was there.
Everyone goes prone when the shot is heard and uh the camera quickly runs away.
But uh yeah, we're gonna we're gonna have I mean the the they'll they'll be able to identify this guy, I think pretty quickly.
And uh, I mean, you can see from the crowd, every the like dozens of people videotaping this thing.
So it's uh it's it's which is both important for a historical capture of what's happening and possibly even for um convicting this guy, but also just horrific because we're gonna be living these videos again and again.
It'll be um you know it'll be very much like uh uh July 13th of last year when we went for you know days and a new video would pop up and a new video pop up here.
Uh luckily, you know, no one got to witness what could have been a terrible, terrible uh rifle shot to the head at that point.
Um obviously people died of that event as well, but it's just uh the the pure political graphic nature of what we're witnessing.

The only thing I could really came in the space and said that he's he's know someone who's friends with the family or he's friends with the family, and they confirmed that he's passed.

But what type of gun do you think was used?
And like, do you think this was uh many people think this was like a military shot?
Do you think that was, or do you think an average individual that was not a handgun?
First of all, it's long distance, so that guy must have used the rifle.
But he had to.
That wasn't a handgun, I don't think.
And that hit his neck very rapidly.
It was a strong hit, pulled him back in the chair.
So if he survives that, it's a miracle.
Um, usually getting shot.
I mean, we just saw Arena die, she got stabbed three times in the throat.
The throat is a very fragile area.
So if Charlie Kirk got hit with a 7-6-2 or 5-5-6 in the neck, and the five, five, six round bounces around, that whatever got hit with that, he's probably gone.
So uh that was a rifle shot.
And and if you saw I just saw the video, everyone's turning to their right.
It wasn't like someone shot him in the front, you know, right in front of the audience.
It was off to the right somewhere.
So it was a long distance shot.
And uh it seemed like it just sounded like a rifle to me.
What what type of uh um skills do you um uh need to have to be able to do that type of uh um shot?
Well, I mean, look, if you just fire at the range and if you have a scope, I mean I was in the Marines, I didn't have a scope at an iron sight, but you know, most people they have scopes, and all you gotta do is aim and have the right uh trigger uh pull and and you breathe.
It's not that difficult with a scope, 100%.
And if it's completely uh collaborated correctly, um, you know, so I mean when Trump Trump's assassination attempt, if he didn't move his head, he would have been dead.
Uh he just moved his head at the right time, and you know, the shooter shot off several rounds.
But um this guy, man, he got a shot right on.
And Kirk was just see the thing about Kirk was he was shot uh head on, whereas Trump, The guy was on the side, so there, you know, anything could happen there.
A little a little more of a moving target.
Kirk's just sitting there, you know, on a chair.
Like, he's not going anywhere.
So he had nowhere to look but the forward.
So the the shooter had a clear shot at him, and you know, maybe he was aiming for the head and he, you know, pulled too hard and went down or something, but that to me sounded like a rifle.
I don't think it was a handgun.
Uh if anyone else agrees, that was a very fast shot.
The um uh the speed of the round was very high, so it's typically not a handgun when it's like that.
Do you do you think um so you don't think the peasant could have just been an average person?
It doesn't have to be someone who's got like military experience to be able to take a shot like that.

No, you don't have to be an expert rifleman from that distance.
I mean, people Americans own guns, they go to the gun range, they practice.
A lot of people are hunters.

The suspect theory looks like he's 70 years old.
Yeah, he looks like an old man, but but an old man who's spent hunting all his life, that's not a hard shot.
You know, someone in a chair, their neck, you know, and that's that's assuming if he was going for his head.
I'm sure he was going for his head, so he already missed his target.
Who shoots someone in the neck on purpose, right?
So let's assume he was going for the head, and he, you know, is probably pulled too hard, or his bone uh support wasn't there.
He didn't breathe correctly when he pulled the trigger and went down a bit.
But uh yeah, he's an older if that's the suspect.
Yeah, it's an older guy who probably has hunting experience or has been in the gun range.
Um, you know, the um Trump shooter was I guess some guy who wasn't good at shooting, otherwise Trump would have probably got killed.

And I'm looking at this, these are things when when this stuff happens, these pundits on the air need to understand that their words have an impact too.
I will go, uh, this guy was in a black rock commercial about certain come on, man.
Like, listen, things will come out.
We will be able to paint the picture within 48 hours, definitely within a week, but right now it's just all speculation, and I don't want to be that guy who says, Oh, it was the Zionist because they want to do something, or it was the Muzzies, or it was uh uh someone who with someone else's camp.
We don't know.
And if they lie about it, we'll figure that out too.

I want to mourn Charlie Kirk, and I want people to have the opportunity to mourn him, especially his family.

Given Charlie's status and what he's done for this country And how he has been literally one of the biggest influencers with helping young people you know become Christians.
Uh uh take on conservatism, look at the world from an objective standpoint through his debates and everything else like that.

They always say that, but uh that shot does not look survivable at whatsoever.

And the other thing is, um, I don't know if you guys saw that they apprehended the shooter, the alleged shooter.
He's an older white man, again, in his 70s or so, and he all he says is um uh that he has the right to remain silent.
Unlike the previous assassination attempts on Trump, this guy's still alive, so his motivations are gonna become clearer because he can sort of you know he's alive to talk about it.
And when I say loss of blood pressure and and loss of consciousness, that's because there's no oxygen getting to the brain anymore, right?

The shooting is confirmed by campus officials and took place around 1210 local time shortly after the event started.
The shot was fired from a building roughly 200 yards away on the campus.
Later, it was reported that a male suspect was taken into custody.
A spokesperson for Kirk's organization TP USA confirmed that Kirk had been taken to hospital.
but stated doesn't look good.
Shortly after the shooting, President Donald Trump stated on true social, we must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who's been shy, a great guy from top to bottom, God bless him.
JD Vance says say a prayer for Charlie Kirk.
Kirk received messages of sympathy from Secretary of Defense, PDX at the attorney general Pam Bondi, Mike Johnson, RFK Jr.
Netanyahu gave his condolences, is praying for him as well.

Yeah, so the the reason why I said that is because uh the the federal law enforcement world is a lot different than the state, right?
So when you're uh a special agent with homeland FBI, any of these agencies, you're kind of at the mercy of the United States attorney's office to bring a case to prosecution.
And AUSAs, unlike ADAs, do have the right to decline cases if it doesn't meet certain thresholds, et cetera.
They got quite a bit of discretion in what they take and what they don't take.
So a common tactic a lot of the times is the state will kind of come in, arrest them.
It's called holding them on paper, and then that will give the feds time to either A, convene a grand jury to indict him, or B, to file a criminal complaint with a judge.
Now, with something like this, right, which is you know, blatant terrorism, they, you know, they might be able to do it faster because obviously the United States office wouldn't decline something like this, but I have seen it before where they're held on state charges so that the feds can come and file the paperwork properly and hit him with the hardest charges that they can while he's in uh while he's in state custody.
So there's many different strategies here.
So let me let me follow up with that.

I get I guess the question we have yeah right now who do you think is leading the search and the investigation, you know, for the suspect?
Is that something that you suspect local and state is leading this and FBI and ATF are going to provide support, or is this scenario where the FBI walks in and says, hey, this has clear case of domestic terrorism, we're gonna be the lead agency in finding this guy.
Like we're we're explaining that prior to that.

So if it's gonna become a terrorism case, it's gonna, which I think it is, it's gonna go to something called the joint terrorism task force or the JTTF.
They're all over the country.
Um, it's a task force of different members from different agencies.
So um, more than likely it's gonna be the JTTF that takes this.
And in the JTTF, you're gonna have state police, you're gonna have local police, you're gonna have sheriff's office, et cetera.
Um, and all of these guys are what's called task force officers, which means they have their state authority, right, to conduct their investigations, but they also have federal authority uh and federal arrest power as well.
So what I predict is members of the JTTF, which is which is technically led by the FBI, but there's also gonna be members from the state police, local police, et cetera.
So I wouldn't be surprised if JTTF takes this.

I've been in touch with uh with President Trump, with FBI Director Cash Patel.
Um we are completely aligned with our state and federal partners as uh as we work through this case.
Now this is a dark day for our state, it's a tragic day for our nation.
And I want to be very clear that this is a political assassination.

We are celebrating 250 years of the founding of this great nation.
That sounding document, the Declaration of Independence, that this great experiment on which we embarked together 250 years ago, that we are endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights.

Today a life was taken.
Charlie Kirk was first and foremost a husband and a dad to young children.
He was also very much politically involved, and that's why he was here on campus.
Charlie believed in the power of free speech and debate to shape ideas and to persuade people.
Historically, our university campuses in this nation and here in the state of Utah have been the place where truth and ideas are formulated and debated, and that's what he does.
He comes on college campuses and he debates.
That is foundational to the formation of our country, to our most basic constitutional rights.
And when someone takes the life of a person because of their ideas or their ideals, then that very constitutional foundation is threatened.
Now, we have a person of interest in custody.
The investigation is ongoing.
But I want to make it crystal clear right now to whoever did this.
we will find you.
We will try you.
And we will hold you accountable to the furthest extent of the law.
And I just want to remind people that we still have the death penalty here in the state of Utah.

We've had political assassinations recently in Minnesota.
We had an attempted assassination on the governor of Pennsylvania.
And we had an attempted assassination on a presidential candidate and former president of the United States and now current president of the United States.
Nothing I say can unite us as a country.

Nothing I can say can bring back Charlie Kirk.

We mourn with his wife, his children, his family, his friends.

Yes, we are actively looking for anyone and everyone who has any possible information relating to this shooting.
Can you tell us details about the suspect being taken to custody where?

Is anybody to be a second individual involved in the shooting?
At this point, there is no information that would lead us to believe that there is a second person involved.
Did you guys talk about the possible shooter?

The only information we have on the suspect, uh the possible shooter is taken from closer to TV here on campus.
Um we do have that.
We're analyzing.
This guy's FBI.
Um, but it is security camera footage, so you can you can uh kind of guess what's the quality of that is.
Uh we do know uh dressed in in all all dark clothing, uh, but we don't have a much better description other than that.
Or shot came from the shot came from here on campus from a uh a location um at a fair uh potentially from a roof, yes.
Uh longer distance shot from a roof.
So to clarify with the security camera what did you have, and then for some interest that's in custody, do those does that match up?
That's what we're trying to decipher right now.
So did an FBI or DHS have anything on the threatboard this morning?
I can't speak.
I'll just say that the investigation's ongoing.
And as soon as we have further information, we will be sure to release it.
Any individuals of foreign intelligence involvement.
Because now I can't comment on any of that.
Can you talk a little bit about the security of the event itself?
But who was there security-wise and what happens on these kind of events?
So my name is Jeff Long.
I'm the police chief here at UVU.
And I'll tell you right now, we're devastated.
We're a small uh small police department.
Uh we have a very large campus.
We have over 40,000 students, and we love our students.
Uh we love our visitors, and we're devastated by what happened today.
This is the police chief's nightmare.
Um, I'm I'm very saddened for the Kirk family.
Um, I know his uh his wife and parents uh found out about this.
You know, obviously he's away from home, he's here in Utah.
They find out uh by a police officer uh that this is their home.
That's tragic.
Nobody wants that.
But I can tell you about our venue today.
This was an open venue.
This is outside.
Uh we did have um six officers working that event.
Um we had uh probably over 3,000 people that were in attendance.
Um sat down in kind of a bowl area here on the central campus.
We have a waterfall area, and so he was uh kind of in a lower area, uh surrounded by uh by buildings.
Um, you know, we we had um uh some plain close police officers that were in the crowd as well.
You know, we train for these things, and you think you you know you had things covered, and um you know these things um you know, unfortunately, they happen.
You try to get you try to get your bases covered, and unfortunately today we didn't, and because of that, we had this tragic incident.
So we did have officers there.
We had uh Charlie Kirk's team.
Um he has a security team that travels with him, and they were here with him when when uh he when he was shot.
Was the gun recovered?
I'm sorry, see was the weapon recovered.
Um at this point I can't disclose that.
There was a question being asked about mass shooting.
Was that person apprehended?
And didn't you know if you asked that question?

When Charlie Kirk was shot, he was answering a question about mass shooting specifically.

That was the chief of Utah Valley police alongside Utah Governor Spencer Cox providing an update.
And it was somewhat vague off the top on exactly if they or if they did not have that individual in custody, and they are saying a person of interest is in custody.
They're not looking for a second potential uh shooter or anyone else associated with that person.
They are trying to get witnesses and different perspective on this, but a person of interest, they're not calling it a suspect at this point.
So obviously also calling it a dark day, a political assassination.
That's what Governor Cox of Utah said there at that press conference alongside, flanked by different law enforcement, including the FBI.
And this was the post from Cash Patel, the FBI director that came down just immediately prior to this event saying the subject of the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody.

be providing updates as they become available they also didn't get into too much of the investigation but they were talking about this the single shot that was fired potentially from a building at a great distance away from the location charlie kirk was holding a microphone sitting down under a white tent answering a question coincidentally about shooting about political violence and active shooters

As they're also talking about the full extent of the law bringing justice for this political assassination there in Orim, Utah.

He was speaking on the steps of the Capitol about this tragic incident.
Killing Charlie Kirk.

And um, you know, he asked what its status was.
I told him he passed away, and he just said, Oh man, is that public news?
I said, I said it's it's official.
He's gone, and I'm sorry.
And um, he said, you know, I'd like to have met him and send a Bible verse about um staying the course and uh we're proud of him.
But like this is gonna um you know, this is gonna um this is gonna change things.
I just kind of gotta figure out exactly how, but we're gonna stay the course and keep doing what we believe.
Um but uh country that's turning its back on our collective faith as a nation.
This is why we're seeing a breakdown in um our ability to band together.
We gotta do something about that.
How do you turn down the rhetoric?
Turn down the the threat of political violence.
Well, I mean, we should be able to speak freely and speak with passion and regard about what we believe without it coming to that.

Um, but even just the stuff that wasn't political violence here, Charlie.
Boy, Charlie was even talking about as recently as yesterday or probably today, I mean or what he said today, um, at Utah or anywhere else, but um, you know, about what happened to that young Ukrainian refugee in in Charlotte.
Um that's it's insanity.
Um with the sickness of people on the street, whether it's um, you know, people that are violent, like that that man in North Carolina or who was, you know, should have been in jail, or whether it's just people that are sick from their political hatred.
Um, you gotta be able to get the other founding fathers.
I mean, obviously, we went through all civil war.
Our founding fathers were often at each other's throats.
Um, Adams and Jefferson famously, you know, hating each other and then kind of coming to respect each other.
Um bound together by something or you're not.
And I think we should be bound together by the much greater purpose for this nation.

Charlie Libit tweeted out three days ago about his faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, so I know where he is.

Um just like true deep thinking, you know, classical education type um engagement on the things that we believe, and that's really important.
It's important to have thoughtful discourse, discourse that makes you think.
It that forces you to go through the logic and reasoning and and and our history and be rooted in history and not let you get away with just sound bites and turn and walk.
Um Charlie was not that.
Charlie was the opposite of that.
Again, you could disagree with him, but he was deeply rooted in philosophy and principle and faith and knowledge and history, and we need more of that, not less.
Uh, we we weakened the country today uh with the loss of Charlie because that kind of discourse is necessary.

We need that.

What was it like leading up to that?

What was that like as you entered this area?
And what kind of area is this?

It was like, so when you walked in there, um it was like a kind of in the crevice of a couple of buildings with a bridge across it, and then behind it was like a grassy open area with a little bit of setting that's kind of in the stadium seating.

And this is on the campus of Utah Valley University.

Um, you know, I'm in my 50s, so a lot of these people were college age students, but there was there was quite a few, actually, I would say that were around my age too.

Where'd you go and where what did everybody else do who was with you?
Um we all just ran to our vehicles and um I I don't know where everybody's scattered.
I don't know if you know some of them were students that you know how to catch a bus or whatever, but the ones that have cars, we all ran to our cars.
I mean, it was a little I parked a little ways away, so it was a little bit of a trek, but it was fine.
But again, interesting that as you point out, no security, open area right there at Utah Valley University.
Right on, Desheen, I really appreciate your um your insight and your telling us your story.
We we uh thank you for that.
We're working in unison with the county sheriff's office, the local police department, and the university police department, all of which have been very cooperative and fully engaged in this process.
Shortly after the shooting, we did have a suspect in custody, George Zinn, but he was released from custody after we identified that he did not match the shooting suspect and was not an accurate person of interest.
However, he has been booked in the uh county jail by Utah Valley University Police Department for obstruction of justice.
We do still have an active investigation for the person of interest.
This incident occurred with a large crowd around.
There was one shot fired and once one victim.
While the suspect is at large, we believe this was a targeted attack towards one individual.
This is tragic moment in our state and in our country.
As we heal, we encourage everyone who's struggling with news of the incident to call 988, our state mental health crisis line.
In addition to that, our partners with the FBI will also be discussing other ways we can communicate through the public for tips and other information.

And Anna Schechter, senior coordinating producer for the Crime and Public Safety Unit, joins us here on set once again.
Uh quite a few updates coming from that press conference from those federal, state, and local leaders and officials with a person of interest in custody.
Where does the investigation go from here?
And I know it's in early days, but uh it's all boots on the ground right now.
That's right.
Well, they're still analyzing surveillance video, they want to match this individual with um everything that they're seeing from multiple cameras.
So that's happening right now.
They're also uh likely interviewing this individual.
Then from there, they want to get associates, uh close family members, friends, um, uh colleagues that this person might have worked with because they want to find out if anybody else might have known uh about this uh attack, uh plans for this attack who might have aided it.
So that's very important part of this investigation that's underway right now.
They're also going to get a search warrant uh for all of the electronic devices, cell phones, laptops.
Yeah, and they're gonna definitely do what's called a cell site as well, guys.
a cell site warrant is when you when you're able to see the geolocation data of where the phone was at the time and see if they could put them at the event tops anything else where this individual might have communicated with others and they're going to pull all of that in review all of that So the clock starts ticking now on that part of the investigation.
While they're doing that, they're building a timeline of everything that this individual did leading up to the moment of pulling that trigger.
And and I know we're looking ahead, but also a look back at what happened this afternoon.
Uh one thing that stood out to both of us during that press conference is hearing how many officers from the university campus police were actually on the ground out there.
Uh he was saying six officers, possibly more that were uh also in planes closed.
He said that planes closed officers were also there.
But when you hear that some 3,000 people were in attendance, what goes in your in your head then?
Not a secure location.
Uh wide open, uh no cover, no checkpoints, no metal detectors.
Um already, just the fact that they held the event at that location.
Law enforcement is at a disadvantage to keep it safe.
But there are things that they could have done.
Uh and there you s you heard the police earlier acknowledge that you know they might have been able to prevent this.
But to have somebody on a roof in an open-air university like that, very difficult uh to prevent.
But had they had more eyes, more resources, maybe somebody would have seen something, said something, and apprehended that person before they took that shot.
And we're already hearing about events being postponed or canceled, uh, political ones because of what happened with security plans perhaps being re-examined.
Uh, do you think that other colleges or other venues could change the way they approach security given what happened here today?
Absolutely.
At least in the short term, there is going to be a message that goes out wide to campus law enforcement uh regionally uh and wider across the country.
Everybody's gonna be on high alert given that already law enforcement in the big cities were on high alert because tomorrow's September 11.
We are in a heightened threat environment.
But looking out and finding that lone wolf before they attack, that is the hardest thing for law enforcement to do.
Everybody's gonna be ramping up security uh right now, essentially, um at campuses but other institutions around the country.
I know hindsight is 2020, especially in cases like this, but when you do recognize that there was outcry and that people were not happy with Charlie Kirk's appearance on that campus, and that this was the first stop on a widely uh publicized tour that he was kicking off on.
What what should have been different?
Well, first of all, you should have had other law enforcement partners there because one laun small campus security police and even uh Provo police, they might not have had the resources to adequately secure this location.
Even for even for crowd control, if nothing else, when you have 3,000 people in one space like that.
That's right, and you know, people get sick.
You usually, if it's a highly publicized event, you'll have um you know EMS teams, you might have a couple of ambulances just to make sure if somebody gets sick um or needs help that there are first responders there.
So the fact that they were so lightly resourced uh that that was not uh ideal, obviously.
Um hindsight is 2020.
I think there was a certain level of comfortability.
If uh he might have felt, well, you know, I bring this healthy debate and and thought largely we're in sort of a friendly crowd, and I think that's where uh law enforcement can make the mistakes where they think that they're in a friendly crowd environment.
They say yes, let's go with an open-air venue where anybody can walk in.
Um, it's part of the appeal also for Kirk to have people come in and be able to have anyone sit down in front of him and and talk to him.
That's right.
Now he did have a security team, so he was aware of a certain threat level, but he didn't seem to be, you know, he was out there uh speaking confidently.
I mean, we watch all of uh all our politicians doing the same thing every day.
It is impossible to have a 100% secure environment, particularly if you're choosing to hold an event outside like this one.
I know you've been urging caution in how we approach MOTA from the very, very start, as soon as we heard this uh news come down.
At the same time, uh it is hard uh to ignore the fact that he is such a prominent conservative uh figure.
And this is all happening, of course, in the backdrop of of quite a few um targeted shootings that we have seen just in the past year or so that have played out.
Luigi Mangioni, of course, uh also behind one of those with uh United Healthcare.
I mean what does that say to you about about where we are and in this you know, the the landscape in which this is all happening?
Well, we've had quite a number of very high profile targeted um assassinations and assassination attempts over the last uh 18 months.
Um so really a very uh heightened threat environment.
But what I will say about the motive is there have been perpetrators also at school shootings, at other high-profile uh targeted attacks, where it was sort of a free-for-all, any motive, a person with a documented mental health history who was grabbing at whatever was in the zeitgeist, using that as motivation.
So that's why in the immediate aftermath of these kinds of shootings, we want to be very careful because we don't know what kind of writings this person might have had, what kind of online spaces They might have been frequenting.
We don't know.
We can suspect, and you just heard the governor of the state of Utah say this was a targeted political assassination.
He might have information that we don't have, but at this point, we don't have information that supports that, which is why we always appreciate your context throughout all of this.

Brandon, I'm so sorry for what you've experienced today.
Can you walk us through what you saw?
Yeah, thank you so much.
I uh I was just standing there about maybe 15 feet in front of Charlie, uh, probably in the it was in the standing area, the standing crowd, maybe three people back uh behind the guardrail.
And we were just in and enjoying listening to him answering questions.
And and uh before I continue, I don't think this is is being uh covered.
I don't know if any witnesses have come out and said that one of the last things that Charlie uh declared um before the shot rang out was that Christ is Lord and that he defeated death.
And uh I just find that very poetic um despite this tragedy.
Um after that uh declaration, he moved on to the next question, which during that time was when the shot rang out and and it just seemed like everything went in slow motion.
It it uh didn't seem real for that split second, and then and and I saw very up close the the graphic detail of what of what happened and uh at that point me and and uh the friend that I was with and the crowd around us ducked uh down and and and quickly got on the ground.
It sounds like uh an incredibly harrowing uh experience that you had to go through, Brandon.
Uh when you when you did uh see this unfold so close to you, uh you said that you got on the ground.
Can you talk a little bit about that immediate reaction of the crowd that was around you?
I know there were so many students that were there.
Yeah, I I think it it took probably one second for everyone to process it, what had just happened, and all of a sudden we were all piling on the ground.
I just remember instinctively shouting, no, no, no, no.
I reached for my phone to text my wife and to tell her that there was a shooter and uh and that I loved her um in case anything happened to me.
Um and uh at that point was terrorism, man.
We were on the ground for about a minute.
Um, and not hearing, I think that not hearing any more shots ring out uh gave everyone the uh the confidence to just start running and start running to the buildings.
Uh and so that's what we did.
Brandon, a lot has also been made today about what kind of safety measures were in place.
Can you tell us about what what you saw when you were there, what kind of safety uh apparatus that you had to go through, if any, and and what your thoughts are on that now.
I'm gonna be completely honest.
When I walked into this this courtyard, I I the first thing that I thought with everything that's that's happened in in uh the past decade or few years, the first thing I thought was I hope they have good security here because this does not seem like a safe place uh for Charlie to be uh giving his message um in terms of the uh the layout of the the courtyard,
not in terms of the people um which uh you know it like she was saying earlier that it was a it was a mostly friendly crowd.
Um and so uh just just the layout of the courtyard.
That that was my initial thought is this does not seem very safe.
What drew you to go there to begin with?
I love hearing debate.
I I'm not totally engaged in in politics, but I I think the dialogue in this country is is extremely important.
And uh I think Charlie was a very, very intelligent man and and uh I I appreciate hearing his his evidence uh for his claims and hearing the debate on the other side too, and and hearing that dialogue.
