One of the best bits of information I heard, best news stories, you may have missed, and I'm sure you did, because of the fact that, well, these stories don't necessarily make it.
Out of Spokane, Washington, there's a...
General Store, Ace Hardware, in one particular piece, part of the city, and they reported that they were offering toys about three years ago, and what they found out was that people are loving, and kids in particular, are loving classic traditional toys.
For example, some of the store's most popular items...
Looks similar now to decades ago.
Legos, Pokemon, Barbie dolls, Hot Wheels.
Pokemon, he said, is a huge seller right now.
Despite being introduced in the 60s, sales of the Tonka Mighty Dump Truck rose more than 250% year over year during COVID.
Later on...
Care Bears went through the roof.
Remote controlled cars.
Fisher Price toys.
Game Boys.
Yeah, Game Boys.
And there's something that's important too, which is critical.
And I want you to listen to me.
When you were a kid, when we were kids, I don't know how old you are, but we used to actually take a ball.
And when you would be throwing the ball, you as a kid would say, okay, it's spherical.
I'm getting it.
Okay, this is lengthwise or whatever this way, this is spherical.
And also, there's a lot of weird parietal lobe, locomotor, propriocentric type of things where you're saying, I have to judge the distance of throwing this.
I have to also talk to you when we're playing.
And I also have to get good at holding things and grabbing things and playing with things instead of swiping.
Kids today are having a hard time holding pencils and pens because they've never used their hands.
Their hands are, for all practical purposes, worthless.
Because their information and their data comes at them left and right, just in these huge blurts, these blasts of information, instead of it...
This is important.
Instead of you being able to read something and follow something, their eyes are unable to track.
That's why reading scores are non-existent.
When we did things, when we played with Lincoln Logs and Legos and board games and climbing trees and things that seemed not very high-tech, those were...
Actually, the highest of texts when it came to brain production.
Years ago, there was a show called Babies, I think it was called, Babies, and they looked at four, it's been a while, I haven't thought about it since now, they looked at an American couple, Japanese, kind of upper, high-end couple, Mongolian steps, and then there was this one, It was a village's area somewhere in Africa.
The American kids had high-tech toys.
Japanese kids had high-tech toys.
The parents were kind of not exactly engaged as far as this was concerned.
The Mongolian steppes, they had animals and kids out there playing basically in dung and huge pack animals were stepping over the kid.
Nobody was hurt, nobody was crushed, but the kid in Africa.
Guess what?
You know what its favorite toy was?
An empty, like a two-liter bottle, and a rock.
That's it.
A rock.
And this empty, flattened bottle.
But here's the difference.
The parents, the mother in particular, always had that kid next to her.
They were always talking to the kid.
Always...
The kid was happy.
Had no idea.
Didn't want a Game Boy.
Just by virtue of this constant stimulation.
Later on, they showed the kids growing up after.
The kid who in Africa probably never had any kind of vaccine.
I don't want to go there, but lived in what you might consider squalor and filth and all that stuff.
What's the happiest?
The most well-adjusted, smiling.
But the kids from the U.S. and this Tokyo family, typical, no eye contact, boring, vapid, insipid, disconnected, unconnected, cold, weird, right?
So these toys, First of all, show a reintroduction and a reconnection with tradition.
Here in New York, by the way, at Rockefeller Center, with the trees, people, it's packed!
Notwithstanding protests and crime, packed with families recognizing going back to Christmas.
This past weekend in Jersey, in Bloomfield, all these family events and Christmas events and just, it's like they're coming back.
People recognize this.
You're going to start seeing more people buying things at commercial outlets in small towns and main streets.
That's what we're seeing.
It's not a fluke.
It's not just something that's just happening out of nowhere.
It's real.
And there's a reason why it's beneficial.
There's a reason why we did so well when we appreciated that.
I'm telling you.
It's happening.
It's coming back.
And you're also going to see a resurgence in little things.
For example, one of the greatest, what a gig this is, American Girl.
Think about it.
Packed.
You couldn't get near this thing.
They're standing in line.
It's expensive.
But what is it?
It's a celebration of binary little girls, feminine dolls, tradition, gender.
Gender.
Classic, prototypical, archetypical, archetypal, binary, usual, boy, girl, girl, gender.
And you can't get away from it.
Why?
Because it's hardwired.
And you can have all of the TikTok freaks you want.
Look, it's a free country.
If you want to walk around with a r as your pronoun, knock yourself out.
If you think you're a Dalmatian, I don't care.
But most people don't think like that.
And we're seeing, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, we're seeing a return to this.
Toys, Tonka.
Remember when you were...
I was a kid in the 60s.
It was wonderful.
We had wood-burning sets and pellet guns and spirographs.
And we were always doing something and moving hands.
And it was...
And we thought it was low-tech.
No!
It was high-tech.
By virtue of the involvement.
By virtue of the involvement and by virtue of the by virtue of the connection that you had to have and you had to implement in order to appreciate it.
What do you think, dear friend?
