I have always been a fan of the study of depravity, lunacy.
I've always been fascinated by what makes us lose our minds collectively, in sync.
Almost in a synchronized pattern.
What is the purpose of this?
What is the reason for this?
How does this happen? | |
How does it happen? | |
How does it come about? | |
What are the triggers? | |
What is the reason? | |
It's almost like these huge conversion reactions.
These hysterical reactions.
Sometimes you may have heard of this.
There's a town or a school or a...
A village where everybody becomes frozen.
Some kind of a collective paralysis.
It's this weird kind of a cosmic conversion hysteria.
Sometimes false, sometimes not.
And why? | |
Why are airlines, airplanes, flights, why is mid-air insanity becoming so popular?
So usual. | |
So expected. | |
What is it about the airplane that is making everybody nuts?
What is happening? | |
I want to discuss that with you.

Now let's understand something.
Have you ever been to a doctor's office and seen that when one baby cries, they all cry?
Have you ever heard a dog bark?
And they all start barking.
And they bark not because they're upset, not because they're angry, not because they're scared, but it's this collective behavior that happens when you see something, when you hear something, you will do it too.
This is Gustave Le Bon. | |
This is crowd theory. | |
This is the psychology of the crowd, of the group.
This is this thing that we do.
Have you ever seen murmurations of starlings?
These are birds that fly in these perfect, wonderful flying punctuation marks, these wonderful smears and spheres.
Sounds like a Joni Mitchell, smears and spheres.
Anyway, these wonderful movements of birds, almost synchronized, choreographed in this perfect Unity.
One bird doesn't fly off and miss the direction.
No. | |
And they do it for different reasons.
To conserve energy, to scare potential predators and the like.
Well, that's sort of what's happening on airlines.
One dog barks, one baby cries, and you see this is the way to react.
This is okay. | |
And then social media will actually encourage it, support it.
They will... | |
Nominate it. | |
They will tell you, this is okay.
This is funny. | |
Let's celebrate this. | |
It's okay. | |
It's an airline. | |
We're used to it. | |
You've seen this before.
Go crazy. | |
Get drunk. | |
Shut the whole plane down.
In the old days it happened.
I don't know, maybe once I told you this one particular terrible case, which I refer to you.
Just go back and... | |
Read the case of Mr. Finneran.
But what we're seeing right now is an example of this is what happens when people are told that a behavior is okay.
And whether it's an airline, whether it's people going into a CVS or a Walgreens or a Sephora or someplace with big empty garbage bags where you can go in and clean off the shelves, where you can steal en masse in...
Unison, in synchrony, in a pattern.
That is exactly what we're seeing right now.
That is precisely exactly what we are seeing right now.
This is this demented, collective savagery.
We are acting uncouth, uncultured, uncivilized, like we are untethered savages, devoid of any kind of societal restraint, any etiquette, any decorum, any...
Any deportment, comportment, nothing.
And it's okay. | |
You're being told constantly through social media, it's okay.
And they're getting worse and worse and worse.
And no one has been able to understand the role of social media in this.
Social media is the echo chamber.
It's the stage. | |
It is the means by which behavior is countenanced, agreed to, allowed, provided for, and tolerated.
And it's getting worse.
And when you see it once, that might shock you.
When you see it 3, 4, 5, 10 times, it then amuses you.
After 20, you habituate to it.
You condition to it. | |
And you become used to it.
It doesn't even... | |
Interest you. | |
It's normal. | |
No big deal. | |
Meaning, the next thing that has to be done to make it to social media status and metrics and likes and all of that ridiculous, the currency of lunacy, it's got to be even greater and louder and worse and more obstreperous.
More contumacious, more horrible, more loud, more frightening, more reprehensible, more profane, more idiotic, more strange, more demented, more depraved, more colossally disjointed and untethered and disgorged from reality.
Do you see what I'm saying?
We're seeing an escalation, an elevation.
We're seeing an arc. | |
We're seeing the trajectory of collective societal lunacy.
And the airplane has replaced the post office where we would go postal.
Now it's here. | |
And it's not a matter of deregulation.
We're seeing more and more horrible, terrible behavior.
Websites and Instagram channels devoted just to this horrible, Demented, rude, boorish behavior.
And as the average girth of citizens gets larger, and as obesity levels swell, and as BMI numbers just skyrocket, and as, I'm sorry to say this, but space-challenged individuals grow in number, you're going to see more fighting.
More arguments, more screaming, and eventually you're going to see these individuals of larger girth having to pay more or the introduction of uncomfortable bench seating.
Think C-130 or special airline routes for people who are particularly cumbersome.
Think I'm kidding? | |
Think I'm exaggerating?
I'm not. | |
