I want to tell you a story.
True story that happened to me.
And one of those moments that I shan't forget.
One of my moments of learning in my lifetime.
It's one of those things where you just...
Remember it.
I was in law school at the time and I was watching a thing called a public defender clinic in Bradenton, Florida.
Manatee County.
Very, very southern.
In an old courthouse.
People mispronounce it as Bradenton.
I don't know why, but they do.
In any event, as I was doing this, as I was...
We're watching somebody doing a closing argument.
Now, you must understand, I'm sure you do, the first time you get to speak other than voir dire to a jury, the opening statement is a very restricted thing.
This is where you tell people basically kind of an overview of what you plan, what you hope to show, what you hope to prove.
I used to tell people then, and we'll tell juries now, that a nobody's statement is like looking at a puzzle box.
I don't know if kids even do puzzles today.
But when you buy a puzzle, and we used to sit around, you know, with your folks or your relatives, which is a great exercise.
Sitting around and putting a puzzle together is one of those things that at the time seems rather daft.
But in retrospect, it's so smart because it's conviviation, confabulation, talking, society, planning, strategy.
But the first thing you do is you look at the cover.
And the cover tells you, okay, this is where we're going.
So if you get this piece, and it's a sky, and you don't know what the cover is, you don't know what this is.
It could be a car, it could be something, a blue house.
But because you've seen an overview, it's like, oh, okay, I know what this is.
That's what an opening statement is.
It says, you know, the evidence will show.
And you always have to say, the evidence will show.
The evidence will show.
The evidence will show.
Once you put this together, provided I give you all the pieces, because if you say, you know what, there's pieces missing here, you don't have a puzzle put together.
Closing argument, different story.
This is when you're at the both sides have rested, and you've got to tell everybody what this means.
And you've got to now convince them that the puzzle that they put together is indeed This thing which you've intended to portray, this mountainside, this pastoral, whatever it is.
As I was watching this, I was with an old timer.
This is, I'll never forget this.
He had, in the courtroom, I've never seen this since, he was dipping snuff.
He had this silver, like a monogram snuff thing, and he was doing this.
He wasn't spitting or anything.
I don't know how.
In a courtroom.
No problem.
Very Matlock-ish.
So I turned to him and I said, you know, this guy's doing a really good job.
He says, no, he's not.
Can you figure out why?
And I listened and I said, well, no.
I think he says, no.
Nope.
You're missing the point.
You're missing the point.
And I was missing the point.
And he said he's doing a great job explaining.
But he's not persuading anybody.
He's not convincing anybody.
He's just explaining it.
Imagine an errant husband, spouse, coming home late one night, covered in lipstick and perfume and drunk and obviously doing something which they shouldn't, explaining to the very angry spouse where they were.
And he comes up with this ridiculous story about how there was an accident, he pulled over, and when he went to administer first aid, CPR, it was a woman, her lipstick.
Now he's doing a great job explaining it.
A great job.
But he's not persuading anybody.
He's not convincing anybody.
He's not doing anything.
He's just explaining things.
He's just saying, here it is.
And what a teacher does is not only explains, but teaches.
That's the next step.
But one of the biggest...
It's so simple.
And I want you today to think about this.
You're going to be immersed.
You're going to be saturated in a world that does nothing but have one person after another explain something to you.
Something that's happening in the world.
Something that's happening with politics.
Something that's happening wherever.
And they just tell you.
This is what's happening.
Do you buy it?
Have you even thought about whether you are able, whether you're entitled to believe the story or not?
We are teachers in this.
Whether it's your kids, whether it's your family, whether it's your friends, if you go into politics, if you go into any kind of social movement, whatever it is, we are teachers in this thing.
And I don't think we're doing a very good job convincing anybody and persuading people of anything.
We're explaining it real well.
And that's the thing.
And once you recognize this, watch any TV show today.
Today's Sunday.
I don't watch them, but if you do, ask yourself, is anybody, am I already, is this person doing anything?
Was I already there?
Did I already believe this to begin with?
And if I did, why am I watching this?
Why am I having this thing, in essence, reiterated to me?
Why am I being told this?
How does this thing work?
Why am I being told this thing, which I'm not really that...
I mean, I kind of agree with it.
I don't know what the big deal is.
Think about it.
It's one of the most fascinating issues there is.
The idea of telling people.
And, and, we love, remember, We love to think that when we are perpetuating our ideas, telling people what we think, that we're doing such a great job in changing minds.
Really?
I don't want to reinforce something somebody else knows.
I want to change a mind.
I am not interested in just telling people, yep, that's the way I saw it.
Yep, that's it.
I want to change minds.
I want somebody to say, I never thought about that.
I never thought about that.
And that's the thing which I don't understand.
That's one of the most important parts about politics.
This is the thing which I've given up on telling people this because it doesn't really make any difference, but I'm going to try it again.
If I'm going to go on and I'm going to try to run for office, if I'm going to try to do something, if I'm going to try my best to change things...
My goal, my target, is not going to be people who are either not going to vote for me or who are going to vote for me anyway.
It's to get to people who might be independent, undecided, maybe poaching them from the other side, no matter what your political orientation is.
And the only way you're going to do this is by convincing them and persuading them.
And not just explaining, but convincing them.
Once you see that today, everywhere you go...
Every show, every person, every influencer, everybody will say, I see what he means.
This is being played just to me.
This has nothing to do with changing anybody's mind.
This is an audience, me, who's already here.
And they're just telling me that which I know.
Isn't this great?
Yes.
Isn't it wonderful?
Great.
Let me give you an example.
Give me an example.
I want to change your mind regarding the notion of emergency food.
My Patriots apply.
Preparewithlidel.com I want to change your mind.
What do I want to do?
I've explained this well.
I think you understand it.
Nobody listening to me when I talk about emergency food When I talk about the fact that right now we have had story after story after story regarding supply chain problems, you name it.
You've heard about this.
ESG.
I know you know it.
Nobody is scratching their head right now saying, what does he mean by this emergency food?
Why?
You understand it.
The question is...
How do I persuade you to go to prepare with Lionel?
How do I persuade you?
How do I get you to say, oh, I understand.
I'm going to act now accordingly.
That's it.
All sales, all ventures, closing arguments, opening lines, retail sales, cars, politics, persuading your children to do the right thing, to go to school, whatever it is, it's persuading somebody.
If I tell somebody, right now, right now, in the event there is a problem, and you see massive stores closing, massive, for whatever reason, whatever the particular reason, whatever the understanding is, what are you going to do?
Are you able to live on 2,000 calories a day?
No.
Do you have enough food, 21 varieties, with a 25-year shelf life?
No, you're not going to need 25 years, I hope, but in the event you did, because that helps you because you can buy it, store it, and that's it.
You don't have to keep replenishing it every year.
25 years, pretty good.
Breakfast, lunches, dinners, do you understand that?
Yes.
Have I been able to persuade you that resealable, heavy-duty four-layer pouches with oxygen absorbers make sense?
Have I persuaded you to say you're going to go to prepare with Lionel and you're going to do the right thing and you're going to do it for yourself and your family right now?
Have I persuaded you?
If I haven't, then all the explanation is for naught.
It's a complete and total waste of time.
But I don't think it is.
Because I know you're smart and that's true.
That's a given.
But the bottom line is, unless and until you do something, Unless and until you go to preparewithlionel.com and prepare for something.
By the way, the best deal ever, three-month emergency food supply.
The best deal since 2019.
Unless you do something, then we're just whistling Dixie.
Whatever that means.
Preparewithlionel.com Now coming up, whatever it is, whatever it is, you may have had this chance of trying to explain to your kids something.
Have you ever had the opportunity to try to explain to somebody that they have to do something?
That they have to change their lifestyle?
Change their diet?
Change the way they think?
Stop doing this?
Start doing this?
Have you ever tried to do this?
Especially young people or people who are resistant.
Have you ever changed a mind, persuaded them?
It is the most fascinating thing in the world.
Explain to a...
Child, your child, anybody else, maybe a child or somebody else, or maybe a friend, that they're doing something which they have to do.
And they're saying, I know about this.
I know.
I know.
I was talking fairly recently to a friend, and as you get older, And by the way, that's a process which you go through your life.
But kind of keeping an eye on things kind of sort of makes sense.
And every now and then, I will meet somebody, relatively my age, who tells me that they've never had a colonoscopy.
We knew one person who never had a mammogram.
Now, I don't know about you, but when I heard that, I thought, This is perfect.
Why?
Because this is the art of persuasion.
I'm going to insinuate myself into this person's life by persuading them that what they're doing is wrong.
But I'm not going to insult them.
I'm not going to say, you know how stupid you are?
No, that doesn't work.
That is not a good idea.
How do you persuade someone who has said to you, I've never done this in my life?
Everybody's told me this.
I've never done something like this.
And you're going to tell me right now.
You're going to try to convince me that I'm wrong.
Go ahead.
Convince me.
What would you do?
How would you do it?
What would you not say?
Think about it.
It's the most interesting thing.
How do you get somebody to say, oh my God, I've got to do this tomorrow.
He's right.
How would you do this?
The first thing you would do is, there's nothing worse than letting somebody convince themselves.
And when you have a quasi-sense of almost a disappointment, like, well...
And it's the worst.
It's the silence.
Think about what you're doing.
You're not even saying anything.
Remember, you're trying to persuade them.
You're using their own heft.
You know, one of the things that people in martial arts love to do is they like to be able to use the particular weight or the momentum of the person coming at you against this person.
It's the most...
It doesn't matter.
Kids are the best.
Explain to a kid who's not even 30 years old, in their 20s, that what they're doing now is going to have a great impact when they're 40. Good luck with that one.
How do you do that?
How do you do that?
I think about that all the time.
What would you say?
How do you say, listen, you better do this thing right now.
How do you explain to people things like education or health or something when they're 20 years old?
Or when somebody's gone this long and says, I haven't had a checkup.
I kind of like saying that.
How do you break through this?
You can explain it all day long.
It's something that really doesn't even have a...
There's an answer to it.
There are approaches.
Whenever we talk about politics, and I love politics, I love politics.
Why is it?
Because what is it?
What are voters?
They're jurors.
They're jurors.
And instead of it being unanimous, it's just plurality, and you can argue the aspects of it.
But it's really a majority.
Well, plurality, depending upon whether it's a runoff or a general.
Anyway, long story short.
What is this?
And right now, you have less than 30 days until midterms.
And we're talking about all this stuff.
Who is trying to convince you of anything?
Ask yourself this today.
Do it like this.
Nope.
Nope.
He's not changing anybody's mind.
He's not changing anybody's mind.
Nope.
Nope.
That's why I love advertising.
I love Bernays.
I love when somebody comes along and says, I want you to try something different.
I want you to think about something differently.
I want to make something cool that you never...
Remember when Doc Martens were these, what is this?
Then they became cool.
When Abercrombie& Fitch was cool.
When Grunge was cool.
And people wore flannel.
And that's why I'm so fascinated with tattoos.
I'm interested in how do you get people...
Collectively.
To think in a particular way.
What is it?
And social media, oh my god.
Because as an amateur behaviorist, psychologist, I love getting people to do something.
What would be your one line to tell somebody to vote who has never voted in their life?
Yeah, they're registered and yeah, whatever.
They just, oh, it doesn't matter.
What would you say?
Where do you even start with it?
Give them the usual line?
Give them the usual story?
You're trying to browbeat them?
Do you tell them that they're giving up on their responsibility?
Do you make them feel bad?
Do you insult them?
Is that the way you sell something?
Is that the way you do it?
I tell you this all the time.
I'll never forget this.
A friend of mine was in the beer business.
And he said, I want you to look, maybe not now, but in the old days in Budweiser, they never talked about beer.
Budweiser was about a lifestyle.
It had nothing to do with beer.
It was about beach volleyball and women and jumping up and down and being in shape and running around and all that.
It's this...
You know what we don't have anymore?
Catalogs.
Do you have any good catalogs?
Nope.
Remember when catalogs?
I loved the catalogs.
I loved.
And I used to love to see fashion catalogs, whether it was Brooks Brothers or this, and they would have these holiday parties.
These holiday parties where people were standing around, and it looked like nobody was out of control.
Everybody was natalie attired.
Everybody was having fun with their mulled cider or whatever it was.
It was so perfect.
It was an image.
It didn't exist in the real world.
Ralph Lauren did that.
Ralph Lauren created a world that doesn't exist.
It doesn't exist.
Country, manor, and preppy, it was beautiful.
It didn't exist, but he created it.
He didn't even have to tell you, buy this.
He didn't have to tell you this.
99% of what you watch and listen to every single day It's either a reaffirmation of the obvious, something you already believe, or something which you reject whole cloth.
When was the last time somebody changed your mind?
When was the last time you had an epiphany moment?
When was the last time you changed your evil ways?
There's a great Carlos Santana in tone.
When was the last time you ever said, you know what?
You're right.
You're right.
I did something 13 years ago, which was the most...
There has never...
I cannot tell you what this is like.
When I read the China study, and I told people that I'm going into a, really, a plant-based diet, lifestyle.
Not vegan.
Not vegan, which is more a lifestyle.
You know, leather.
But just plant-based.
You have no idea what that meant to me.
What this avowed carnivore who still, still watches barbecue shows like I don't know what.
You have no idea what that was.
That was one of the most important decisions of my life.
You have no idea.
The resistance you get.
You have no earthly idea if you ever even dare to announce it.
If you ever do that.
And you tell people this.
People come out of the woodwork.
It's incredible.
They resent you for reasons.
And I did something which I thought I would never do this as long as I live.
This is not negotiable.
You don't know what...
What flesh to be consumed means to me?
You have no idea.
It was like somebody giving up heroin or whatever it was.
I thought to myself, what was it?
What was it?
What was that?
I can go into detail.
But what was it?
I'm telling you, try it.
You know what?
Don't try it.
Tell people you're trying it.
And watch what they say.
Out of the woodwork, people will come out of people you don't even, who all of us, you can tell them anything you believe politically.
This hits a nerve you can't ever, ever explain.
And then out of this, somebody will come along and say, can I ask you about that?
You know, I've wanted to do that.
I've wanted to do that.
And they're just like that.
Can you maybe tell me, is there a book or something I can read?
And I always said, isn't it funny?
You've got to explain how not to do something.
Think about that.
Here's a book on how not to run.
Page 1. Don't run.
Page two.
Go back to page one.
That's it.
Why is there an instruction on teaching somebody don't eat that?
Yeah, but I...
How do you don't eat it?
By don't eating it.
By not eating it.
You just don't eat it.
It's fascinating.
You have no idea.
You have no idea.
And it's one of those things where I'm...
I talk to friends of mine sometimes who are kind of in the club and they say the same thing.
And I would never, ever, ever dare to try to proselytize or convince anybody because I'm telling you this.
You can talk about anything politically you want, anything, any idea, any theory, but if you dare say something which so confounds, so subverts, So rejects, so dares to challenge something which they themselves believe, you have no idea.
And the best is somebody who in the back of their mind is kind of toying with it and you're coming along and you're apparently having an easier time with it.
It's the most fascinating thing you've ever seen.
You want to talk about persuasion?
Good luck with that one.
Good luck.
And even within that particular world, you meet people who are themselves militant, who do nothing to persuade anybody, who actually make it harder for any kind of persuasion.
All your life, you have done something at least one time where you've had to explain to somebody why it is you're doing.
Think about it.
Is it a religious belief?
Is it a lifestyle?
Is it something that you've done where you've had to kind of explain it, where people have said, you know what?
I love you, man, but I think you're crazy with this.
Either because of this, politics, religion, maybe romantically or marrying somebody or listening to a pretty good type of music or something.
You've done something which really rubs people the wrong way.
What is it?
Where people have asked you, why?
Have you ever elected not to drink in public?
This is a very interesting thing, too.
Hey, you want something to drink?
No, it's okay.
No, how about a glass of wine?
No, it's okay.
You're not going to have anything to drink?
No.
A little wine?
A little something?
No.
Why not?
You ever had that?
Boy, that's a mouthful right there.
There's a lot going on there.
What's that about?
Nothing?
Come on.
Come on, a light beer?
Nothing?
Can I get you something?
Nothing?
You're going to drink water?
You sure about that?
Why does it bother you?
It doesn't bother me.
I'm just...
Have you ever seen that?
Go around.
Go.
Believe me.
You have something.
Maybe it's your...
Again, people normally go to the usual thing.
Religion, politics.
That's not it.
Maybe it's...
Clothing, maybe it's his style.
And if you want to say, okay, I'm going to go one step further.
I'm going to not only practice this, but I'm going to try to persuade people to do it.
Good luck with that one.
It is one of the most fascinating things.
You have never lived.
And so somebody tells you, these armchair anthropologists, no, you don't understand.
You see, the canine, this little, tiny, little, tiny, not the molars, this thing, this is brisket.
Okay, fine.
And you sit there and you say, it's interesting.
I want to tell you something right now, which is the greatest thing I ever learned also.
One of the things which is so important to learn, please commit this to memory.
Please do this as long as you live.
Please, please, please, you're going to need this.
Whether in school, whether a teacher, maybe it's a loved one, maybe it's a spouse, maybe it's an in-law, maybe it's normally a boss.
And if you've ever been in the entertainment or media business, people will tell you something.
Normally program directors, news directors, who have no earthly idea of what they're talking about, but they'll have an idea.
They'll say, yeah, I got an idea or something.
I got an idea.
I one time had somebody, there was a news quote director who said, I've got an idea.
Why don't we send out a news crew?
There was a lottery that was about, some Powerball or something was some big number, which I never understood because I'll take a million.
No, no, no.
I don't play the lottery.
Hey, it's up to 50 million.
I'll play today.
Anyway, so the news director said, why don't we send some news crew out and ask people what they would do if they won the lottery.
Now, this has been done so many times.
It's not even funny.
And she looked at me and said, what do you think?
Now, people are looking at me because they can see in my face that they think this is, it's a tad hackneyed.
Not a tad.
It's fossilized.
It's been done so many times.
So here's the answer you give all the time.
And it works like a charm.
You look at them and you say, interesting.
And that's it.
It's non-committal.
It's not approbation.
It's not approval.
You go make fun of them.
You're just commenting that it's interesting.
Not that it's good.
Not that it makes sense.
This is interesting.
If you want to go a step further, depending on how you know them, there you go.
There you go.
But interesting.
And then walk off.
I'm telling you, pick the hill you want to die on.
Make sure, because we love to do this now, because everybody's, you know, because of social media, we always want to involve ourselves.
We always want to argue with people.
We always want to argue.
I don't want to argue with anyone.
I'm not interested in arguing with anyone.
No one.
Don't care.
Think about that one.
I'm going to give you some classic little things I've learned which are just gems.
I use them all the time.
I'm telling you.
Teach your kids especially when they go into a job in the workplace.
Remember, you cannot, nobody wants to hear what you have to say.
Nobody.
Nobody wants you to make suggestions.
But when they do, when they, in a rare occasion when somebody says, hey, I've got something to tell you, don't say what you think.
Whoever says, you know, honesty, no, it's tack.
I did a piece on lying and how lying and misrepresentation of fact when you intend to deceive, deception's okay if it's going to help.
Believe me when I tell you this.
You know when people say, you know, marriages, you should have community.
Just always talk.
Excuse me.
If you think anybody wants to hear everything that you think about everything, everything, you're out of your mind.
Nobody, very few people, really want to hear what you think.
That's what social media are for.
There's a way of, they just, they really don't.
They'll tell you that.
They'll pretend.
I think we should talk about this.
I think we should have a sit-down.
I don't think so.
Are you sure you want me to tell you this?
How do I look?
What do you think?
Are you sure?
So remember, my friends, persuasion, explanation.
I want to explain one thing to you.
A good friend, too.
You know what I'm going to say.
That's right.
A good friend.

Keep what I'm saying in mind if you have a youngster or people who are out there trying to get jobs because the job mark...
What jobs are going to be in the next couple of years, I have no earthly idea.
I really, I really don't know.
I don't know what they're going to do, and I don't know if it's going to be by Zoom.
I don't know about quiet quitting.
I don't know, but invariably, invariably, you've got to train, teach, persuade, explain, not only jobs, whatever, but people.
How to deal with others.
And ask yourself something.
Ask yourself.
Have you ever...
When was the last time you had to buy something?
Because you saw the ad for it and you said, I've got to do this.
You know those commercials on TV?
Remember the...
What was that thing called?
Dump cake?
Remember that woman?
Remember the dump cake?
You get this thing and you throw this stuff in there and you...
She, Kathy, something...
It's one of the best.
ads I've ever seen.
Ron Popeil.
Set it and forget it.
Tell me that wasn't...
Tell me that did not...
The George Foreman grill remember that?
People just...
I have to get this.
People were like, this is the greatest thing in the world.
This is the greatest thing in the world.
I love advertising.
Watch.
Because advertising, Larry Tate, McMahon and Tate, Darren Stevens, that kind of advertising, Mad Men, that's a different story.
It's a different world.
Because now it's influencers.
When you go to a restaurant, what do you do?
I always check out.
Wherever we go first, I look at the menu.
Always.
I hate to have to redo this.
What do you do?
You go and you see pictures.
Reviews.
See what people think.
Even though a lot of times the reviews are, I don't know how good they are, but whatever it is.
That's where we are today.
How do you compete in a world where that's advertising?
What are you advertising?
What's the point?
You're going to go on a TV?
How does this even work?
Who's even watching TV?
I have never been more simultaneously frightened by the future, but in love of what I'm seeing right now.
I love this world.
I'm telling you right now.
I'm seeing things right now that are so incredible, so fascinating.
I can't put them into words.
That's enough.
I want you to have a great and glorious day.
It's 51 degrees.
Go out.
Walk.
Walking is one of the best things you can do for yourself.
Walk.
Walk.
Think.
Put in music.
Be careful when you cross streets.
Things like that.
Get out.
Perambulate.
Locomote.
Move.
You don't have to run.
You don't have to walk fast.
Go out and do something.
Go outside and do something.
Not on a treadmill.
Go outside.
I'm telling you.
And listen to me.
Especially if you have small kids, the stuff that seemed to you when you were a child to be the most fun, kind of stupid now, is the most critical.
Playing in a box.
Playing hide and seek.
Playing fort when you hide.
Playing catch.
Things that seem absolutely critical.
If you've got a magic pickle, consider yourself lucky.
