And so somebody told you, let's just mandate that everybody wears a mask.
But there's one fundamental problem.
you don't have the authority to do that And they look at you.
They look at you and they say, really?
Republicans too many times.
What's your stance on white supremacy?
They didn't ask Joe Biden that.
You see, because I remember a few months ago, Joe Biden was on the breakfast club.
And I love the breakfast club, okay?
I like, you know, I'm a black man.
I pay attention to the culture, okay?
So I like the breakfast club.
And I remember Joe Biden specifically saying, if, you know, if you're thinking about voting for Donald Trump, you ain't black.
And so my friend, my friend sends it to me, right?
He's like, dude, he's like, did you hear what Joe Biden just said?
My phone is blowing up.
I'm getting a text message from everybody.
They're like, Byron, did you hear this?
Because, you know, I'm running for Congress.
I'm in the middle of Republican primary.
Joe Biden just says this.
I'm getting text messages.
I'm getting phone calls from everybody.
They're like, did you see this?
Did you see this?
I go on Twitter.
I look at the clip.
I listen to what Joe Biden says.
I look at the palms of my hands.
And I say, well, I'm voting for Donald Trump.
Last time I checked, I'm a black kid from Brooklyn, New York, who was raised by Meredith P. Brown in Brooklyn, New York.
Last time I checked, I didn't grow up with a silver spoon in my mouth.
We grew up poor.
We struggled.
Your mother ever tried to make you sardines?
She tried to make me sardines.
I wouldn't even eat that.
Like, I wouldn't eat it.
Okay?
I was a kid in public school, PS 235 in Brooklyn, New York.
They tried to put me on Riddle, and they said, he just won't sit down.
He just won't sit still.
He's talking too much in class.
This is why I apologize to the teachers of my three sons, because they get it from their father.
Okay?
My wife is clapping.
That's right.
They get it from you.
I'm the kid that loves hip-hop music.
Grew up in the streets of the inner city.
So when I hear some white dude from Delaware, Scranton, or wherever he's from, talking about how I ain't black if I'm voting for Donald Trump, my response was, to hell with you, Joe Biden.
You don't even know me.
You don't even know us.
And this is the fundamental problem in our politics today.
We have a political party that does not know and doesn't understand truly the plight of all Americans.
You see, their view of politics is that they are smarter than you.
Their view of politics is that somehow the framers got it wrong and that power must be vested in the hands of a chosen few.
You see, their view is that if you would just cede more and more of your authority to them, they will fix it all.
Let's talk about the coronavirus.
Because I hear Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and a certain lady who's running against me for Congress right now and she's going to lose.
Yeah, that's right.
Cindy.
Come on, everybody.
I want to talk to my opponent for a moment.
Cindy, you're going to lose.
Okay.
And they tell me, they say, we're going to have a national mask mandate because that is our plan.
And you have certain local officials who will tell you, we are going to mandate masks because we take public health seriously.
And we're the only ones who take it seriously.
So we are going to tell you what to do.
And so you get a guy like me running for office, going to local county commission meetings and local city council meetings and telling local officials, you know what, guys, I get it.
You're a city council member.
You're sitting on the county commission.
You have people sending you emails and calling you, begging you to do something.
And so somebody told you, let's just mandate That everybody wears a mask.
But there's one fundamental problem.
you don't have the authority to do that And they look at you.
They look at you and they say, really?
I'm a member of the Florida legislature.
See, I actually have had the responsibility and the honor to pass laws in Tallahassee the last four years.
The Florida legislature has never given any locality the authority to issue mask mandates.
We've never passed it.
The voters of Florida have never voted for it.
It's not in our Constitution.
So fast forward, I'm talking to local officials.
And they're like, Byron, I have the authority.
I'm a local official.
I'm like, no, you don't.
You don't have the authority to tell people what they must put on their face.
You can recommend it.
If you and your county want to buy masks for every citizen in your county, God bless you.
Go right ahead.
I'll never stop you.
I'll never stand against that.
If you want to educate, put out PSAs, put flyers all over the place.
I love the stickers on the ground where they measure the social distance.
Anybody seen those?
I love those.
But you don't have the authority to tell people what they must put on their face.
So going back to Joe Biden, when he comes out and says we're going to do a national mask mandate, and they're actually running TV commercials right now talking about a national mask mandate.
But when you ask Joe Biden about said national mask mandate and how he's actually going to effectuate said national mask mandate, what does he actually say?
He says, oh, well, you know, we're going to work with governors and local officials, but you know, because we're going to lead.
And I'm fighting for everybody and every family.
You know, I grew up in Scranton.
You know, I need to be, I care about you.
That's what we're going to do.
So this is the problem we're having.
We're having elected officials across our country who don't even know the actual genesis of their authority.
They don't even know what their limits are.
You see, I get asked a lot, they say, Byron, what's the number one attribute you actually look for in elected officials?
I look for restraint.
You see, I don't want to hear about your platitudes and your empathy.
I don't want to hear about your promises and your plans.
I don't really care if you're a nice guy and I like you and I want to go have a beer with you.
And I don't really care if you're a jerk and I don't particularly like you.
The number one thing I look for in an elected official, somebody who's asking for my vote, is do you have restraint?
Do you know the limits of your authority?
And then also, do you understand and respect the fact that just because you can doesn't mean you should?
There is a necessary purpose for government to be small and limited, to be defined and out of your way, to do the things that you and I cannot do for ourselves.
That's government's purpose.
On the national level, to actually do treaty bargaining with other countries, to actually have a military to protect us from foreign invaders and also domestic insurrections.
You chazz people in Seattle.
Those people aren't even good things.
But this is the purpose of our government.
This is the purpose of what we're supposed to do at the federal level.
I'm Byron Donalds.

I'm going to win.
