| There's an old joke that if the planet were destroyed, the New York Times headline would read, World Ends, Minorities Hit Hardest. | |
| These days, besides minorities, you'd have to throw in LGBTQ, the undocumented, and the homeless. | |
| And the coverage of the coronavirus is beginning to sound like that. | |
| Now, it is true that according to the preliminary racial statistics, it does seem that blacks are about three times more likely than whites to be hospitalized for COVID and to die from it. | |
| And our rulers immediately discovered why. | |
| Bernie Sanders denounces systemic racism. | |
| Elizabeth Warren says the problem is decades of structural racism. | |
| Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blamed the chronic toll of redlining, environmental racism, etc. | |
| Now, I love the etc. | |
| You know, it's all that other awful stuff white people do. | |
| In Monroe County, New York, Michael Mendoza, the health commissioner himself, explained that structural racism has put people of color on the front lines disproportionately. | |
| The Washington Post says the coronavirus is infecting and killing black Americans at an alarmingly high rate. | |
| Well, it's killing other people too, but I guess that's not alarming. | |
| Now, to its credit, the Post did note that blacks have conditions that make them more vulnerable, but it didn't go into much detail. | |
| In fact, blacks are 60% more likely than whites to have diabetes and three times more likely to have asthma so bad that it kills them. | |
| They're about twice as likely to have high blood pressure, and they get it younger. | |
| Blacks are about seven times more likely than whites to have HIV, and the CDC includes people with HIV among people who are at higher risk. | |
| Could there also be genetic differences between the races? | |
| Are blacks perhaps not as careful about avoiding the disease? | |
| Oh, don't even ask those questions. | |
| But one thing we can say is that so many blacks think they are immune to the virus that as late as April 14th, just last week, Baltimore City was planning a coronavirus ad campaign to combat the myth. | |
| An ad campaign just for blacks to explain that they can get the virus too. | |
| Well, why didn't they get the message earlier? | |
| Kenesha Grant, who teaches political science at Howard University, says part of the problem was we also got information that did not seem to represent people who looked like us. | |
| Well, that's funny. | |
| Asians and Hispanics don't seem to have had that problem. | |
| Well, they better get that special messages to blacks out in a hurry. | |
| Because just last week, an estimated 400 or 500 ignored quarantine orders and had a huge party at this apartment complex in Bakersfield, California. | |
| The only reason we know about that party is that several partygoers let fly with about 100 rounds of 9mm ammo and six people had to be taken to the hospital. | |
| Also last week, Ernest Wilson, on the right, Threw a party at his place in Baltimore, and again, we know about it only because someone there shot and killed him. | |
| But don't forget, as Vox explains, hundreds of years of racism has delivered poor health and economic outcomes for black people, making them more vulnerable to the pandemic. | |
| Something no one is talking about is that the preliminary data show whites and Hispanics are equally likely to die from the virus. | |
| And you know what? | |
| If Hispanics were dying at higher rates, everyone would be confidently telling us that it's because of structural racism, language barriers, and that we should have had more authority figures who look like them. | |
| But since they're not dying at a higher rate, I guess the systemic racism that is killing blacks somehow spares Hispanics. | |
| But Hispanics are hopping on the virus bandwagon. | |
| A 100-car protest caravan organized a few days ago with the help of something called Transqueer Pueblo demanded that everyone be released from the ICE detention centers in Eloy, Arizona. | |
| One of the organizers said that the close quarters of the centers could turn them into death camps. | |
| The protesters had signs reading Libertad para Todos, which means Freedom for Everyone. | |
| And here's one in English that says, let my people go. | |
| My people? | |
| Right. Libertad for my people. | |
| And there's another group to worry about. | |
| A CBS article says, coronavirus pandemic highlights barriers to health care for transgender community. | |
| You see, transgender people are in an awful fix because sex change surgery is considered non-essential and it's on hold. | |
| And as this blue-checked tweeter notes, it's now called trans-affirming surgery, and she's outraged that it should be considered non-essential, adding, The CBS article quotes Amita Swadin, | |
| who calls herself a non-binary femme queer person, who says that getting surgery is a matter of life or death. | |
| CBS is also worried that in the hundreds and hundreds of pages of corona relief legislation, there's not one mention of special consideration for LGBTQ folks. | |
| And, you know, we should worry about women, too. | |
| All around the world, men are twice as likely as women to die from the virus. | |
| But the Australian TV, Channel 7 News, wants you to know why women will feel the impact more than men. | |
| There must be something worse than death. | |
| Read the article. | |
| Find out. | |
| You see, there's a pattern. | |
| We must always be on high alert for anything that hurts anyone who's not a straight white man. | |
| The problem is always racism, homophobia, the patriarchy, or maybe all three. | |
| And what if white men are hit hard by something? | |
| Did you know that white men commit suicide at Two and a half times the rate of black men and ten times the rate of black women. | |
| White men are that much more likely to commit suicide than Hispanics, too. | |
| Pause the video and check the numbers if you like. | |
| Imagine how much we would hear about it if blacks or Hispanics were killing themselves at twice or five times the white rate. | |
| Bigotry drives women of color to terminal despair, the deadly consequences of structural racism. | |
| But have you ever heard anyone worry about high rates of suicide? | |
| Ever? Eh, white lives just don't matter. | |
| And you know that there are groups that are a lot richer than whites. | |
| The median white household income, as you can see here, is close to $58,000. | |
| But look at the top. | |
| People from India, they make $107,000. | |
| And the median for all East Asians is over $85,000. | |
| White families make 45% more money than blacks and 19% more than Hispanics. | |
| That's considered a national scandal and proof of racism. | |
| While East Asians make 47% more than whites. | |
| That's more the difference between whites and blacks. | |
| And Indians make 85% more money than whites. | |
| The median white family makes $16,000 a year more than the median black family. | |
| That's because of centuries of racism. | |
| The median Asian family makes $27,000 a year more than the median white family. | |
| That means nothing. | |
| You see, if whites do better than someone, that's an outrage. | |
| If someone does better than whites, who cares? | |
| It's kind of like the high white suicide rate. | |
| Nobody even notices. | |
| Well, that's America for you folks. | |
| If you're white, you've got white privilege, man. |
