Time Text
Welcome back to our God's Grace's Greater segment.
We're going to dive into the scripture today.
We're following up where we left off yesterday.
We did Luke chapter 7 verse 1 through 10.
Today we're picking up in verse 11.
Yesterday we talked about Jesus and how he healed a centurion's servant and showed us through that the faith of a man who put himself in a position to recognize Jesus' authority not over men on earth, But over life and death as a whole and what that real authority looks like.
So that's what we talked about yesterday.
Today we're picking up where we left off in chapter 7 of the Gospel of Luke.
We're in verse 11.
We're going to read up to verse 17.
And this is an incredible story about Jesus raising a man from the dead.
And he does this several times throughout the gospel.
He has several instances where he raises people up from the dead.
But this story is powerful because there's something that we can learn through it.
And I hope that I do a good job of explaining what that is.
But with that being said, let's just go ahead and read through the verse here.
It says...
Soon afterward, he was on his way to a town called Nain.
His disciples and a large crowd were traveling with him.
Just as he neared the gate of the town, a dead man was being carried out.
He was his mother's only son.
She was a widow.
A large crowd from the city was also with her.
When the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said, Don't cry.
Then he came up and touched the open coffin and the pallbearers stopped.
He said, young man, I tell you, get up.
The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.
Then fear came over everyone, and they glorified God, saying, a great prophet has risen among us, and God has visited his people.
This report about him went throughout Judea and all the vicinity.
So when you talk about the historical account of Jesus, One of the most incredible parts of Jesus' ministry when he was alive, as he still is alive today through the resurrection, but when he was alive with those before his death, burial, and resurrection, was this, where these moments where Jesus would perform where these moments where Jesus would perform these miracles.
And in this case, it's no different.
He would perform miracles like healing the lame, paralytics.
He would heal the lepers.
He would heal the blind.
He would drive out demons.
He would do these amazing things.
But one of the most amazing things are exemplified in stories like this, where he is able to conquer death.
Now, this is a bit of foreshadowing to what Jesus will do later in his life, near the end and, I guess, the beginning of his life, if you will.
But in this story, what do we see?
We have a widow.
She's leaving town as Jesus is entering town.
So they're just basically passing by each other.
Jesus is being followed by a large crowd and the widow is being followed by a large crowd as well.
The widow has her son who has died in a coffin being brought out of town, I guess for burial, one would imagine.
Now this was tough because in those days a widow, which would be a woman whose husband had died, If she would lose her sons or her children as well, she was almost certainly going to face destitution, poverty, and suffer from that loss.
Not only financially, but as far as standard of living and everything else, she would have probably not fared very well at all.
Now, what happens in this exchange is fascinating.
It's documented by Luke.
Jesus does a couple things here.
First...
He performs a miracle, but before he performs a miracle, he shocks everyone by touching the, I guess, coffin that was carrying the body out of town.
Or the, I don't know, some people call it the, there's different names for it, but essentially it's like a coffin.
And where the body's wrapped up and it's being brought out of the town.
Now, all this was a part of the ritual tradition that the Jews at the time were very, very particular about.
They had made all these rules about how to handle dead bodies, what you could touch, what you couldn't touch.
This was all very strict.
And if you touched a dead body in the wrong way, without the proper blessing and rabbinical ceremony, Then it was seen as one of the worst things you could do.
It made you spiritually or ceremonially unclean, right?
And you had to go and do all these rituals to become clean again.
So Jesus, as he did throughout his gospel, he breaks that tradition by touching this man on his way out, right?
And this shocks everyone.
But then he says, after he touches it, the coffin I guess, he says, young man I tell you, get up.
And he commands with authority a power over life and death again.
And in the previous example we looked at, Jesus does this in the same way, right?
With the centurion and the healing of the centurion's servant.
In this way, he actually commands death.
Now imagine, if he is so powerful as to command somebody to come back from death, well...
There's a reason, I guess, why we are still talking about him today.
Why all time is based off of him.
What year is it?
Is it 2023?
Well, 2023 years from what?
Oh, think about it.
Jesus has power over life and death.
But, again, this is foreshadowing to the ultimate sacrifice he would make for us.
But what does he tell the woman before he does this?
He says, don't cry.
He's saying don't be saddened because Jesus is showing us in this very moment that he has the authority to be in control of life and death.
He can stop it and reverse it immediately.
So he's telling us not to worry and that's something I believe we should all take with us today.
Don't worry about things we cannot control.
And trust that there are things that God has control of, His Son Jesus has control of, that we need to turn over to Him.
Whether you like it or not, we're all taking the same path out of here.
Or we at least all have the same result at the end of our lives.
They will end, is the point.
Now you have a choice though.
Your choice is, do you choose the life everlasting life?
The eternal salvation that was bought and paid for with the sacrifice made on the cross, or do you deny it?
Do you think it's unbelievable?
Do you think this couldn't have happened?
Nothing can save us.
We're doomed.
I feel sorry for those who have that opinion.
And it actually speaks to the crowd and how they reacted to Jesus bringing a man back from the dead.
What does it say here?
It says, But what did they do next?
Then they glorified God saying, a great prophet has risen among us and God has visited his people.
They recognized in that very moment that not only should they be afraid, but that God had to be glorified.
Because it was only with God and through God that Jesus was able to overcome and conquer death, which he would later do on the cross for our sins.
So, I'll tell you what.
In this story, I find hope.
I find hope that not only did Jesus conquer his own grave, but he could conquer our graves as well.
And he has conquered our graves through the sacrifice that he already made.
It's just up to us now to accept that, to embrace it, to live it every day.
And I call on all of you out there watching to accept the powerful gift that That has been given, the sacrifice made for our eternal salvation.
Let's go ahead and say a prayer and then we'll wrap it up.
Lord and Heavenly Father, thank you so much for this day and thank you so much for allowing us to share in these powerful stories of the history of our Lord and Savior, what he was able to do.
Lord, help us understand how this can apply to ourselves and our lives and understanding your power and authority, your son's power and authority and the sacrifice made on the cross to conquer death.
What a powerful concept.
Lord, for those out there questioning or doubting or wondering if it's real or true, speak to their heart.
Open their mind.
Show them The truth, Lord, so they may find you more closely.
Show us all the truth so we may find you more closely, Lord, and help others along the way.
We thank you for this gift.
We thank you for these miracles and we thank you for this ability to share them with one another.
We thank you most of all, Lord, for that sacrifice made, for the one who came In your name, the Son of Man, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to conquer death as he did after hanging on that cross and then rising out of that tomb.
Thank you for that, most of all.
In Jesus' name we pray.
Amen.
